Send us a textBaseball journeys rarely follow a straight path, and Sean Casey's story proves just how winding and meaningful that road can be. The man known as "The Mayor" opens up about the Pittsburgh mentors who shaped his career long before he reached the majors, revealing the profound impact of figures like Joe Ringel and Frank Porco who believed in him when college scouts weren't calling. In this emotionally charged conversation, Casey takes us back to his teenage years when his father delivered the tough message that would change his life: "Nobody's coming for you." That lesson sparked a determination that led him to write 31 college recruitment letters—the final one opening the door that would eventually lead to a stellar MLB career. The podcast captures several tearful moments, including a surprise live call to Joe Ringel, the man who took teenage Casey to Three Rivers Stadium for batting practice sessions that helped him develop into a .296 hitter against lefties. When discussing his trade to his hometown Pirates, Casey's voice breaks as he describes the pride of representing Pittsburgh and seeing his family in the stands.Casey also shares fascinating insights from his recent stint as Yankees hitting coach, discussing the delicate balance between analytics and simplicity in modern baseball. His perspective on transitioning from player to coach to broadcaster offers valuable wisdom about life after playing days end.Whether recounting borrowing Manny Ramirez's bat for his first MLB hit or describing the Pittsburgh dedication to community that shaped his character, Casey's stories illuminate why baseball connections run so deep. For anyone who understands that sports careers are built on the shoulders of unsung heroes, this conversation will remind you why we fall in love with the game in the first place.Check out Hold My Cutter podcast for more conversations with baseball's most insightful personalities. Send us a textDan was not the voter who didn't vote for Ichiro. But we all wish we knew who it was! For the 3rd straight year Dan joined the podcast to discuss the final HOF voting. He voted for Bobby Abreu, Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Ichiro Suzuki, Chase Utley, and Billy Wagner. 9 in total and we discussed why he didn't vote for one more - could have been King Felix, Andy Pettitte, or Dustin Pedrioia or even David Wright! We also discussed allowing voters to vote for more candidates than the current limit of 10. Gordon suggested that if a player got one vote in his first year on the ballot he could stay on for year 2 and then be subject to some sort of minimum percentage - 5% or even less. As #Mets fans we are thrilled that Billy Wagner finally made it. New Yorkers will be traveling to Cooperstown this coming July to celebrate CC and Billy. October 20, 2004 Game 7 of the ALCS began at 8:30 in the evening at Yankee Stadium. After winning the first three and loosing the next three, the Yankees were sending Kevin Brown to the mound to face Derek Lowe for the Red Sox. Johnny Damon, suffering through a 3 for 29 slump decided to play aggressively leading off the game with a single to left and a stolen base, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a Manny Ramirez base hit. The very next pitch, however, was lined into the right-field bleachers by David Ortiz to give Boston a 2--0 advantage. In the second inning, the Sox loaded the bases against Brown, causing Yankees manager Joe Torre to remove him and put in Javier Vázquez to face Johnny Damon. Damon hammered Vázquez' first pitch into the right-field seats for a grand slam. The rout was on. Damon, who also added an upper deck two-run blast in the fourth, had three hits in the game. Boston also enjoyed a solid performance from their starting pitcher, Derek Lowe, who allowed only one run and one hit in six innings of work, and was never even intended to be a starter in the postseason. He pitched game seven on just two days of rest. Pedro Martinez relieved Lowe in the seventh inning, receiving loud chants of "Who's Your Daddy?" which intensified as he gave up two runs. He eventually raised the velocity of his fastball to the mid-90s and shut down the rally. At 12:01 a.m., on October 21, Rubén Sierra hit a groundball to second baseman Pokey Reese, who threw to first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz to finish the unprecedented comeback. "Not many people get the opportunity to shock the world. We came out and did it," Boston first baseman Kevin Millar said. "You know what? We beat the Yankees. Now they get a chance to watch us on the tube."The Red Sox won 10--3 and became the first team in Major League Baseball history to win a seven-game series after losing the first three games.

October 18, 1977 With the Yankees up three games to two against the Dodgers, Reggie Jackson seizes control of the game, the series, and is crowned "Mr. October" when he hits three consecutive home runs in Game Six of the World Series. Jackson hit a two-run homer in the fourth on the first pitch he saw from starter Burt Hooton to give the Yankees the lead. Lou Piniella made it 5–3 by adding a sacrifice fly. Once again, in the fifth with a man on Jackson connected on the first pitch off Elias Sosa to make the score 7–3. Finally, in the eighth, Jackson strode to the plate, amid chants of "REG-GIE, REG-GIE, REG-GIE!", and drove the first Charlie Hough knuckleball he saw 475 feet into the stands. An inning later, Jackson had led the Yankees to an 8 - 4 victory and the World Championship over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He became only the second player in history to smash three home runs in a single Series game. In addition, five home runs in one Series and four consecutive blasts over a two game period in the Series were also unprecedented. October 18 2004 – Game 5 of the ALCS opens in Fenway Park with the Yankees leading the Series 3-1. After 8 innings, the game was tied at 4 and would remain knotted there till the 14th inning. Yankee Pitcher Esteban Loiza walks both Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez, bringing Ortiz up with two outs. The previous night's hero did his job again. Singling to center on the 10th pitch of the at-bat to bring home Damon, Ortiz set off celebratory chants of “Who's Your Papi?”. After five hours, 49 minutes and 471 pitches, the Boston Red Sox outlasted the Yankees 5 – 4. Ortiz became the first player in history to hit two walk-off home runs during the postseason, and ended the longest game in ALCS history at 1:22 a.m. Mentioned in this episode:Join us!Join our weekly news letter, member community and family of Podcasts @ members.thisdayinbaseball.com

This is our second conversation with Alexander Montalvo, the CEO of the Catalyst Project and co-founder of Tarrant 4 Change. Alex is a community organizer who works with grassroots organizations to make change and give power back to the most marginalized people in our county. His work gives him a great perspective and how we can influence the political landscape. In our first conversation with Alex and Lydia nearly a year ago, Republican consultants were seen sitting with Nazi sympathizer Nick Fuentes. Today, we are facing issues such as voter suppression on college campuses, attacks on DEI, and infighting between Christian nationalist Republicans and Corporate Republicans. Have we taken steps forward to fight against Tarrant's obsession with extremism or is there a storm coming this November? You decide after this sitdown between Alex, Ann, and EJ. Former MLB all-star Nick Swisher joins Jeff Hem on the pregame show to discuss his involvement in the upcoming Home Run Derby X event coming to First Horizon Park on August 31, being around fellow HRDX competitor Manny Ramirez, and how the event has become a great fit for him following his playing career.
Whether you love him, hate him, or REALLY hate him, there's no denying that Alex Rodriguez was one of baseball's most perplexing stars. Despite becoming the best player in the AL and signing (at the time) the richest contract in pro-sports history, he never really sealed the deal with the fans - or with J-Lo (twice). But, instead of landing on the Yankees, what if his 2003 trade to the Red Sox went through? Would he have led Boston to multiple titles, or would the curse of the Bambino be alive and well? Would the Rangers have won their first ring decades earlier, and would we ever have experienced Manny Ramirez playing pro ball in Japan with guaranteed unlimited sushi?! Hours after Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto agreed to terms on a 12-year, $325 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, longtime national baseball writer Barry Bloom visits the Jack Vita Show to break it all down! Yamamoto, age-25, posted a sub-1.70 ERA in Japan in each of the last three seasons. He is a three-time MVP and three-time pitching Triple Crown winner. The Dodgers are pairing Yamamoto with newly-acquired, two-time American League MVP Shohei Ohtani. Nine months ago, the duo won the World Baseball Classic as members of the Japanese National Team. Now, they will try to make a run at a World Series title, as teammates once again. In less than two weeks, the Dodgers committed over $1 billion to just two players. Barry and Jack discuss the Dodgers' aggressive offseason and assess the potential risks and rewards attached to both free agent signings, in addition to the acquisition and corresponding extension of Tyler Glasnow. Will the Dodgers run away with the National League in 2024, and win their first championship in a full, 162-game season since 1989? Will the Dodgers win a handful of titles in the coming years? How much pressure will the club be under in the upcoming season, coming off their big offseason moves? The San Francisco Giants continue to struggle to land big-time free agents, striking out on Ohtani and Yamamoto. The club did however agree to a six-year, $118 million deal with Korean star Jung Hoo Lee. Elsewhere in the National League West, the San Diego Padres are slashing payroll, dealing Juan Soto, and bidding farewell to free agents Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Blake Snell and Josh Hader. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are building on to their young core which reached the World Series in 2023, re-signing Lourdes Gurriel Jr., trading for Eugenio Suarez and agreeing to a four-year, $80 million deal with Eduardo Rodriguez. The club has also been linked to free agents JD Martinez and Justin Turner. Barry and Jack cover all things NL West (except for the Colorado Rockies)! Barry analyzes the Soto trade from both the Padres' and the New York Yankees' perspectives. He discusses where Soto, Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo will fit into the Yankees' lineup in 2024. Barry and Jack comment on other free agent signings from around the league, including the moves that the Kansas City Royals have made. Later, Barry shares about his career and his Hall of Fame ballot. Barry used all ten of his votes this year, voting for Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, Joe Mauer, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Andy Pettitte, Gary Sheffield, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Billy Wagner. Barry makes a compelling argument for both Wagner and Pettitte. Wagner is in his ninth year on the ballot and is gaining momentum. Last year, he received 68.1% of the vote. Pettitte, in his sixth year, has been entirely overlooked. He received just 17.0% last year. Now 72 years-old, Barry is entering his 49th season as a Major League Baseball writer. He was the San Diego Padres beat writer for the San Diego Tribune from 1982 to 1998, and has since written for Bloomberg News, MLB.com, Forbes and SportBusiness. He currently is a senior writer at Sportico. You can follow Barry on Twitter (@Boomskie) and check out his work at Sportico!

David O. Markus is a South Florida-based defense lawyer who has represented Andrew Gillum, Hillary Clinton, Manny Ramirez, and Billy Corben, and, if that wasn't enough work, he also hosts the For the Defense podcast (an under-discovered gem). He joins Mike to break down the weaknesses in the federal case against Donald Trump, but also to detail what he thinks will be the biggest obstacles for the Trump defense team to overcome. Plus, why House Republicans are infighting on the way to pass a couple pieces of seemingly doomed-to-fail legislation.
