The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs played the most preseason game of all time, with Toronto having to play two forwards on defence for most of the game. While Montreal fell in their second preseason game there's plenty to look at from the game. Scott and Laura break down their standouts from the game, including first round pick Filip Mesar, and who could be doing a bit more overall. The Habs have little time to rest as well, as they head to Winnipeg to play the Jets on Thursday evening. The Jets have released their lineup, so who can we expect to suit up for Montreal? Scott and Laura discuss some of the things they'd like to see from the team as they play their third game out of four this week. Finally, there's a lot of discussion around a highly controversial ranking of NHL coaches, naturally the hosts wade in with their takes on who is actually the most attractive coach in the league right now. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Locked on Canadiens has teamed up with Jack Bond of Paramount Sports for a unique season preview for the Montreal Canadiens! While the Habs were always going to be longshots to win much of anything this year, just how long are the odds for the team to win the Stanley Cup? Or the Atlantic Division? What is the actual over/under on the points they're expected to earn this year? We break it all down, and listen to the reasoning behind why the team is more than likely going to finish at the bottom of the standings again. However, it's not all bad as the Habs have a couple of potential surprises for smart bets this year as well. If the team overachieves at all, could Martin St. Louis steal some Jack Adams votes? Also, can Cole Caufield continue his impressive form from last year and top the 30 goal plateau? Who will surprise, and can the Montreal Canadiens take the first major strides forward after a disastrous season last year? Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Montreal Canadiens got some unexpectedly good injury news, as Paul Byron appears to be cleared for a return to start the NHL season. Where does the Habs alternate captain slot into the lineup, or is his clean bill of health and indicator he might be part of a trade in the near future? With all of their free agents re-signed, the Montreal Canadiens appear to be mostly set as training camp approaches. However, their biggest rival in Toronto still has young defenceman Rasmus Sandin unsigned, should Kent Hughes consider offer sheeting him? While he plays on the left side, he's already a secure NHL-calibre player, which could allow Montreal more time to let Kaiden Guhle and others develop in the AHL as well. On the flipside, is the cost too much that Hughes would have to reconsider his stance on clearing cap space since he took over the team? Finally, the hosts discuss this week's Rookie Showcase in Buffalo where the Habs prospects will square off with Buffalo, Ottawa and New Jersey's prospects as well. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The regular season is just over a month away, so the hosts are doing an extremely early best guess at what they think the Montreal Canadiens opening night roster will look like. It's Jake Allen's net with Carey Price out, at least until the NHL Trade Deadline. However, can Cayden Primeau supplant Samuel Montembeault with a strong preseason performance after a dynamic playoff run with the Rocket? Or is the young netminder destined for the AHL regardless of his preseason play? On defence the Canadiens are heavy on left side defensive prospects, with Jordan Harris, Kaiden Guhle and Mattias Norlinder all pushing for one available starting spot. Who will slot in behind the veterans Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson? Which of those two is the top left D on the team anyways? On the right side, can Justin Barron take another step forward in his development, or are Habs fans prepared for another season of David Savard as the top pairing option? Finally, there's almost too many forwards in the NHL right now what does that mean for the first overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky, or is the Slovak able to beat out some of the veteran options? Where do all the centres fit with the new additions of Kirby Dach and Sean Monahan? Are fan favourites Michael Pezzetta and Rem Pitlick going to hold their spots, or is there something special up the sleeves of Kent Hughes in terms of a trade to bring new bodies in? Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Scott is taking a prominent hockey idea and applying it to the Montreal Canadiens in the form of the Prospect Pyramid! Using the prospect list from the Habs EOTP Top 25 Under 25 he created a tier list of all the current Habs prospects and breaks down who lands where, right now. Tier 1- Instant NHL Star Impact Tier 2- Top Six F/Top Four D potential, soon to be an impact player Tier 3- Top Nine F/Top Six D potential, should be an NHL regular Tier 4- Depth pieces, bottom pairing D and bottom six F Tier 5- Everybody else! Where does the newly drafted Juraj Slafkovsky fit in? While the Habs don't have a Tier 1 prospect right now, who among the current group could turn into one in the near future? Scott also looks at whether or not having too many pieces in one tier is a bad thing, or if it makes the Canadiens far more likely to land high-end talent out of that group. Scott breaks it all down, and discusses his methodology for placing prospects where he did. And just because they're in one tier right now, how they can easily rocket up the pyramid in the near future and what it would take it to do so. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Montreal stunned the hockey world on Thursday by announcing that they had traded for Calgary Flames' centre Sean Monahan, and a conditional first-round pick in the NHL Draft. The move comes on the heels of the Flames signing free agent Nazem Kadri, and the Canadiens reaped a strong reward in the form of another first-round pick as Calgary needed to get rid of Monahan's contract. Given that Monahan is still recovering from off-season hip surgery and likely won't play until November, where does he even fit in Montreal's lineup? So the question becomes, how did Kent Hughes manage to pull this trade off with no cap space? The good news is that Hughes was able to plan his LTIR space accordingly, and will be able to fit Monahan onto the roster without much issue. The bad news is that it comes at the expense of Carey Price's health, as the Canadiens goaltender will not start the season able to play, and will likely never play again barring major surgery on his knee. It's an unceremonious end to the career of a franchise icon, and the hosts discuss their feelings around it, and what's next for the Canadiens. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Episode 673 - Are the Montreal Canadiens one of the five worst teams in the NHL?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2022 29:43

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: It's a debate on whether or not the Montreal Canadiens are actually one of the five worst teams in the NHL! Coming off a last place finish, and the first overall pick, has Kent Hughes improved Montreal enough to get them out of the cellar? The hosts take a look at all the reasons why they won't finish in the bottom five again first. Chief among them is the fact that head coach Martin St. Louis will have had an entire off-season and preseason to mold the Habs into the team he wants. Also, the team should hopefully not be as catastrophically injured, which should help Montreal climb slightly out of the cellar. On the other side of the coin, the team hasn't really changed all that much in terms of roster construction, and there are a lot of questionable pieces still on the team. If St. Louis cannot continue his own run of improving players on the team, what will happen? Also, the goaltending remains a serious question mark, and the defence is still loaded with young, but unproven talent, can they hold it together for the entire season? To end the show, the hosts try to figure out the upcoming Atlantic Division, and where they think the Habs will inevitably rank among the eight teams. Despite both hosts saying that Montreal is likely to finish last, they both agree that they could easily move out of last place as well. Scott and Laura also wonder where the Bruins will end up with their injuries, and with the return of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! After a long wait, the Montreal Canadiens have finally found a partner for a Jeff Petry trade, shipping the defenceman, and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson and a draft pick. At first glance it feels like a loss for the Canadiens as their top right side defender is shipped out of town, leaving just David Savard in that role. However, as the hosts take a look at his microstats and development trend, did Kent Hughes pull off a sneaky good bit of work? At the very least, the Canadiens freed up more cap room, which allowed them to make more moves over the weekend as well. Namely, Montreal has re-signed Rem Pitlick to a two-year contract! After electing to not qualify the forward, thus avoiding arbitration, the Canadiens were able to bring him back on a very cheap $1.1million AAV contract for the next two years. Where does Pitlick slot into the lineup, and does his return slow the full-time NHL debuts of Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard? The Habs weren't the only busy team though, as the Laval Rocket made a slew of moves to get themselves ready for next season. Scott takes a look at the return of Gabriel Bourque to the Rocket, in addition to the new prospects joining the goaltending posse. Who is Filip Mesar, and where can he fit into the hierarchy of the Canadiens prospect pyramid? Scott breaks down how the picks of Owen Beck and Lane Hutson make this year's Draft one of the most exciting for fans in a long time, and how it could turn out to be one of the best in recent history. The hosts also take a look at the rest of the picks made for the rest of the Draft, and what the prospect experts around the league are saying. In particular the selections of Cedrick Guindon and Vinzenz Rohrer have drawn strong reviews for their tireless work ethic and could be potential steals for the Habs in the future. Scott also wonders if the seventh round selection of offensive dynamo Miguel Tourigny is the next in a line of late round picks to make their way through the Laval Rocket starting this season. Finally, Scott and Laura give their own vibe checks on Montreal as a whole, and what they think is coming next with free agency just a few days away. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Canadiens are currently in full NHL Draft mode, but that hasn't stopped their AHL club from making moves before free agency begins. The Laval Rocket have signed former draft pick Xavier Simoneau to a one year, AHL contract, very similar to that of Rafaël Harvey-Pinard. Scott and Laura discuss how Simoneau can follow in Harvey-Pinard's footsteps, and what the future holds for the seventh round draft pick of the Canadiens. Also, Colin White was bought out by the Ottawa Senators, and going into this past NHL Trade Deadline, the Canadiens were rumored to be interested in his services. NHL Insiders have seemingly confirmed that Montreal is again an extremely likely landing spot for White, but is he a fit for the rebuilding Canadiens? Even if he does end up here, does Colin White's arrival spell the end of Christian Dvorak's tenure at the same time? To round out the show, a bit of speculation based on the hiring of a new GM in San Jose. With Mike Grier at the helm, there's likely to be changes to the San Jose Sharks roster as they need to shed salary in order to begin a re-tooling of their own properly. One name that may be on their buyout list is that of Marc-Edouard Vlasic, someone who has been linked to Montreal in the past. Would the aging defender be a proper fit on a dirt cheap contract? Or is it better to let the younger prospects find their own way and pass on Vlasic? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
