Inside today's Locked on Canadiens It was a busy end of the week for the Montreal Canadiens and their fans with both good news and bad news across the board. First was the new contract for goaltender Samuel Montembeault, signing for three more years at 3.15 million a season. Scott and Laura think that this puts an end to the trade rumours surrounding Montembeault, but will throw gas on the fire for the other two netminders still on the depth chart. Then the bad news came quickly, as Alex Newhook left the game against the Florida Panthers with a lower body injury after being checked into the side of the net. Newhook needed help to get off the ice, and was revealed to be out for at least the next three months with a high ankle sprain. The hosts debate if the team needs to add a forward in a possible goalie trade in the coming week. Finally, despite a respectable 1-1-1 record on the week the Canadiens failed to impress overall and it's leaving the hosts frustrated. They want to see Martin St-Louis give more opportunities to players like Jesse Ylönen instead of promoting veterans who are at their ceiling already. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens After a tough end to last weekend the Montreal Canadiens bounced back with a big 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Samuel Montembeault was as steady as always as the Habs overcame a slow start and scored three unanswered goals including a late game-winner from Joel Armia. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens managed to get out of California with a 2-1-0 record, a rarity for the Habs as they typically struggle on the West Coast. Despite the winning record there were some troubling signs for the Habs, especially against the San Jose Sharks and most certainly against the Los Angeles Kings. Was it just a few off games, or are there more troubling signs facing the club going forward? Then, it's Three Up, Three Down! With goaltending rumors swirling only one Canadiens netminder has done whatever he can to avoid heading to Edmonton in a possible trade, and that is Jake Allen. The veteran in net has left plenty to be desired, especially against LA, is it a regression or are we overreacting right now? Also a surprising entry on the down list is head coach Martin St. Louis as Scott has some serious questions about his handling of Josh Anderson and why players like Jesse Ylönen are left on the bench instead. Finally, the NHL once again stepped on an easily avoidable rake first by telling Marc-Andre Fleury he could not wear a tribute mask in warm-ups, and then again when Jacob Trouba wasn't punished for swinging his stick at someone's head. On the positive side, Juraj Slafkovsky continues to be an impressive force on a line with Cole Caufield and Christian Dvorak. If the first overall pick continues to play well and take the next steps in his skill progression it's likely the biggest win that the Canadiens could ask for this year. Also rising this week is Cayden Primeau, he hasn't played a ton this season, but when called upon he's done well, and that might be accelerating any possible trade scenarios. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens continued to be hammered by bad injury news this week as they announced that Rafaël Harvey-Pinard will be out at least two months with an injury and that Jordan Harris will also be out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. Given that both players were day to day, and then played again before being downgraded with longer term injuries, the hosts have some concerns about why they were allowed to play if they weren't 100%. It leaves a struggling team now much thinner in terms of reserves and brings back a lot of bad feelings from the last two seasons as well. To counter Harris' absence going forward, the Canadiens announced they've also recalled defenceman Mattias Norlinder from the Laval Rocket to join them in Anaheim. While Jayden Struble earned the first call up honours, Norlinder might be a bit more surprising considering his recent struggles. Is this a potential last chance showcase for the offensive defenceman, or is there still time for him to stake his claim in the hierarchy? Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens followed up a bad loss to the Vegas Golden Knights with another bad loss, this time to the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. Jake Allen held the fort for as long as he could, much like Cayden Primeau against Vegas, but the defence wasn't able to return the favour in any way. It's a frustrating end to a week where the Habs lost their last four games, after putting together a decent set of wins previously. So, what's going wrong? Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down! Despite the losing streak Habs fans have gotten to watch Juraj Slafkovsky begin to grow in a big way over the last week. He recorded two points against Boston, including a great short-side goal, if he can keep this up while the star players get right there is plenty to be excited about. Also, Joshua Roy remains on fire for the Laval Rocket thanks in part to his partnership with Sean Farrell. Can a pair of rookies get the Rocket season back on track? Finally, the Habs did a holiday mug video, and Laura is a huge fan. On the downside of things the Montreal Canadiens need Cole Caufield to find his old form again as he's struggling to find the back of the net. While he's getting shots on net, he can't seem to get a bounce, how can the Habs get him going? The first part of that is Martin St. Louis has to figure out how he can free up his star players to play to their strengths, while also getting the defence in order. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens again played a strong effort, with scoring chances galore for the offence, and again were unable to collect two points against the Calgary Flames. Justin Barron equalled a mark previously set by Andrei Markov and Nick Suzuki clinched the game with a fantastic shootout move, the hosts break down everything! Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Canadiens bounced back from an ugly loss to Minnesota to pick up a win over the Washington Capitals in overtime on Saturday night. Cole Caufield played the overtime hero while Nick Suzuki had his best showing of the season for the Habs. Scott and Laura take a look at the game, and some good underlying signs that the Habs might be okay this year. Then, it's Three Up, Three Down! To the surprise of no one, the Montreal Canadiens power play leads the way in this week's down column, the hosts discuss if it's time to shuffle some of the bodies around to find a more creative approach on the man advantage. Scott also has some concerns about the AHL goaltending situation, and how it might sink a promising Rocket season before it even begins. And finally, the injury curse appears to be back in full force, just not at the NHL level...yet. On the up side, Joshua Roy has taken the AHL by storm, piling up an incredible week on the scoresheet and finding himself alone at the top of the scoring race in the early going of the season.
