Breaking with the usual pattern a bit, while at the 2023 HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC, I met some fantastic comics vendors, including Fred Wright, Jr. and his wife, LaTonya and daughter Bailee, who own Eastgate Comics in High Point, NC. This episode highlights Eastgate Comics and you will hear some great stories...of its origin and evolution. Theirs is a truly heartwarming and inspiring story. Please forgive the background noise of the convention. I tried to reduce it as much as possible. After the interview, you'll hear Mike and co-host, Andrew Leyland cover Fantastic Four #52, which features the first appearance of the Black Panther! Andy is from Manchester, UK, and is a lifelong comics fan and a prolific podcaster. He has more than a passing knowledge of the Fantastic four, being an original host of the Fantasticast! He also hosts a plethora of other podcasts, which I have linked below. Chatting was a “ahem” fantastic experience! Speaking of the adjective “fantastic”, during our recording I, in Freudian fashion, overused the word a bit! So, I challenge you to take a drink every time I say it! Welcome to the first episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two, the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am starting a two part series celebrating Superman's 85th anniversary because...I really want to. It's just that simple. For this first installment I do an off the cuff solo episode where I talk about six of the sub-anniversaries happening during Superman's 85th. Superman The Movie, Superman III, the Ruby Spear Superman animated series, the live action Superboy series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Man of Steel all have big anniversaries this year and I thought it would be fun to go through them all in one shot instead of devoting specific episodes to them for...reasons. Various reasons. Reasons I go through during the episode itself. I mentioned during the episode that I had done a commentary for Superman The Movie back in 2013. That was on episode 153 of Views From The Longbox, which I don't have a handy link to...sadly...because the post with the show notes for that episode no longer exists. Views is readily available on just about all podcatching services, so it should be easy to find. For those interested, episode 155 of Views was a commentary for Superman II and episode 162 was the commentary for Superman IV that I did with Scott Gardner. Not to be outdone, if you search for episode 135 of the Palace of Glittering Delights where Andy Leyland had me on to yak over the "coherence cut" of Superman IV. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series Two can be sent to itallcomesbacktosuperman@gmail.com. You can subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts/iTunes or stream it through Spotify and Audible. The Fortress of Baileytude Podcasting Network is on Patreon. It's mostly a tip jar as I have no time at the moment to produce exlcusive content, but if you like the content I do produce please consider contributing a dollar a month. The opening and closing theme to the show is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. Next Time: The second part of Happy Anniversary, Superman!

John Byrne Doesn't Play Well With Others Hello, and welcome to episode 367 of The Fantasticast. Each episode, Steve Lacey guides you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. We're finally here, the start of the 1980s renaissance of the Fantastic Four. John Byrne is here as writer and artist, and the Fantastic Four will never be the same again. Diablo is back in town, and looking to use the elemental nature of the Fantastic Four against his old enemies. Only some cunning thinking, and a well-stocked scuba store, can prevent the team from being defeated by their own dark reflections. And only the former co-host of The Fantasticast can help guide Steve through this new beginning. Yes, returning to the show for the start of the Byrne run is former Fantasticast co-host Andrew Leyland. He tore himself away from reviewing The Overlooked Dark Knight, and from hosting his eclectic pop-culture review show The Palace of Glittering Delights, to dust off his Fantastic Four longbox and make a return to the world of Fantastic Four review and commentary. Missed him? As well as his podcasts, you can also follow him on (what's left of) twitter where he is @leyland_andrew! This time around, I'm joined by Andrew Leyland (Hey Kids, Comics!, The Palace of Glittering Delights, The Fantasticast, Listen to the Prophets) to discuss what has to be one of the most underrecognized (and maybe even underrated) Batman stories of the late 1980s, perhaps even of all time. Written by Jim Starlin with art by Berni Wrightson, it's the four-issue prestige format miniseries from 1988, The Cult. We take an in-depth look at each of the issues and also talk a little bit about Batman and comics in general. Show notes and pictures are available at Pop Culture Affidavit, which is also where you can see regular weekly blog entries about the randomness that is pop culture.

Chris and Cindy continue to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the show by looking at the wedding issues of Marvel and DC's flagship heroes, Spider-Man and Superman, and you're invited! First up is Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson struggle with doubt in the days leading up to their wedding. But is it more than just cold feet? Will they make it to the altar (or the courthouse steps, at least)? And whose idea was this, anyway? What corporate synergy has brought together, let Mephisto not put asunder! Then we step back in time…and to Earth-Two in Action Comics #484! Superman is vanquished by the evil Wizard, so a new hero must rise to fill the void! That hero is…Clark Kent?!? How do these events lead to his marriage to Lois Lane? The first couple of comics get married again, this time in the Post-Crisis DCU, in Superman: The Wedding Album. A media tie-in, a gaggle of scheming creators, and even death couldn't keep them apart, so the happy day finally arrives! It takes an army of Superman creators past and present to tell the tale of how a nearly 60-year old love triangle finally made it to happily ever after. What did Chris and Cindy think of these tales? Were they convincing? Did they feel the love? Do these characters even belong together? Listen on! Download via iTunes. Be sure to let us know what you think! Let your voice be heard! We'd love to read it aloud in an upcoming episode. Drop us a line in our comments section, or email us at supermatespodcast@gmail.com. If you're listening on iTunes, please consider leaving a review of our show! We're also on Facebook! Chris' guest-spot on Andrew Leyland's Palace of Glittering Delights is now available! Hours of Trek Talk! Thanks to Andy once again for the wedding show idea! Next time: Chris and Cindy take a look at the recent Batman 66 Lost Episode special featuring Two-Face, based on an unused TV script by Harlan Ellison! All this and your feedback!

This episode, Chris and Cindy Franklin are joined by Andrew Leyland of such fine podcasts as Hey Kids, Comics!, The Fantasticast, and Palace of Glittering Delights to discuss Andy's topic of choice; the 1977 Spider-Man TV pilot film! Journey with Andy and the Super Mates on a free-wheeling trip back to the decade of polyester and see how the Spidey legend was reinterpreted through 70s eyes…and low TV budgets! The trio explores the history of the series, and how it measures up to Spidey comics of the time, and contemporary comic-to-TV adaptations like Wonder Woman and the Incredible Hulk. Do they, as Andy would say “take the Mick out of it”? Or do they give it a radioactive thumbs up? Listen on True Believers!!! Subscribe via iTunes Be sure to let us know what you think!
