Medieval Irish tales are sexier, funnier, and bloodier than any of the better-known myths of the medieval era. They reveal a world full of mighty demi-gods, shapeshifting beauties, and determined heroes. In her book, Otherworld, Lisa M Bitel retells Irish tales of wonder and romance, acting as our guide in the tradition of ancient storytelling.

Tony Isabella has been a comics writer and columnist for more than 35 years. He got his start working for Stan Lee at Marvel Comics as a writer and editor. As a writer, Isabella scripted Ghost Rider; the characters It, the Living Colossus, in Astonishing Tales; Luke Cage in Hero for Hire and Power Man; and Tigra in Marvel Chillers; Daredevil; and Captain America. While writing the "Iron Fist" feature in Marvel Premiere, he co-created the supporting character Misty Knight with artist Arvell Jones. Isabella developed the concept of The Champions series and wrote the first several issues. At DC Comics he created Black Lightning, the company's first headline African-American hero. He pitched the idea for Black Lightning and it was developed though only 11 issues were published in the first series He's a contributing editor and the lead reviewer for Comics Buyer's Guide, where he has reviewed more comic books than anyone else in the magazine's history. Gerry Conway, who wrote the Doctor Doom story in 1971's Astonishing Tales #8 at the age of 18, discusses it with Douglas--and writer/editor/semiotician Joshua Glenn shares his story of how he discovered that issue. Topics include the inspiration of Conway's Catholic upbringing, the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby relationship (Conway worked directly with both of them!), Young Frankenstein, the music from Bugs Bunny cartoons, the Bhagavad-Gita, Ruritanian romances, Sir Walter Scott, and Darth Vader.
Retired U.S. diplomat Margaret Pride joins Douglas Wolk to discuss the Doctor Doom stories in Astonishing Tales #6-7... or, rather, to touch on them rather briefly, and then discuss how the relationship between Victor Von Doom and T'Challa is and is not like the relationship between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, how exactly diplomatic immunity works in practice (and the biggest crime Doom would be able to get away with thanks to it), and what popular culture gets right and wrong about diplomatic relations in general.
Paul Tobin (writer of Bunny Mask, Dr. Doom and the Masters of Evil, etc.) joins Douglas to discuss Astonishing Tales #1-5, but they are attacked by an all-consuming sonic sponge.

This episode is one I've been really looking forward to because I was able to sit down with my good pal, Professor Alan, from the Relatively Geeky Network! And as he's contractually obligated to do so, we had to talk about Dr. Doom! This story is one that is part of the character's incredible foundation, and is a must read (Astonishing Tales 8, 1971, Gene Colan Tribute book, 2008). As usual, you can contact the show with feedback by emailing MagazinesandMonsters@gmail.com or by reaching out to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious and don't forget to check out my blog MagazinesandMonsters.com! ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun 1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This special "zero" episode covers comics-related material from my earliest years, before I was technically a collector, including runs of Strange Tales, Doctor Strange, Warlock, Tomb of Dracula, Power Records, Marvel Premiere, Captain Marvel, The Adventures of the Big Boy, and the single issues Howard the Duck #2, Green Lantern/Green Arrow #84, Stalker #1, Logan's Run #1, Astonishing Tales #23, Famous First Edition #C-61, The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu #46, Weird Worlds #8, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk in "The Great Rodeo Robbery", Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Spider-Woman in "The Mystery Of The Power Crown", TSR-80 Computer Whiz Kids: The Computer Trap, Captain America #207, and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty. “Transcripts” Episode Art Tumblr Twitter Facebook rolledspinepodcasts@gmail.com Comment on Résumé page or Rolled Spine Podcasts. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diabolu-frank/message

ASTONISHING TALES!* Stories and Essays *Your astonishment may vary By Matt Geiger “Matt Geiger is definitely interested in strange things—bearded Norwegian axes and transubstantiation and elderly models, for example—but also in making ordinary things seem strange, in the best possible way. It's just chickens or a car seat, but you're laughing out loud and then, suddenly, your eyes are filling with tears because he's sideswiped you with his profound tenderness. I wish he were my friend IRL (as the kids say), but in the meantime, I'll reread these funny, shimmering musings on everything that matters and more.” -Catherine Newman, author of “Catastrophic Happiness” Author and humorist Matt Geiger believes Jorge Luis Borges when he says the thing philosophers really seek, more than truth, more even than knowledge, is the opportunity to be amazed. With this as his starting point in his new collection of stories and essays, Geiger sets out in search of comic profundity and awe. Geiger turns what poet Kimberly Blaeser called his “philosopher’s vision” to his own Neanderthal DNA, parenting, competitive axe throwing, death, the holidays, dandelions, doppelgangers and much, much more. With a nod to the limits of human knowledge and understanding, particularly his own, he blends whimsy and gravitas while unveiling beauty, joy, and happiness in a seemingly broken world. From the 83-year-old model whose image adorns the cover of the book, to the two-headed calf he discovers in a rural gas station, he finds reason after reason to smile, nod, and be astonished by everyday life.
Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Matt Geiger to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss his new book ASTONISHING TALES.
