For our final season, we're covering the short life of Martin Goodman's Atlas/Seaboard comics by reviewing all the debut issues from their line.  WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE! https://youtube.com/live/FxDNA8jYfpo Goodman also published a POLICE ACTION at the pre-Marvel Atlas. This one seems to appeal to fans of the swarms of detectives and cops that cluttered up American TV screens in the mid-'70s, like Banacek, Kojak, and Baretta. POLICE ACTION offered up TWO lead characters in their own stories: Sam Lomax, NYPD, and Luke Malone: Manhunter. Stories by Russ Jones and Mike Ploog with art by Mike Sekowsky, Al McWilliams, and Mike Ploog.  You can read all 3 issues here: https://archive.org/details/police-action-complete/Police%20Action%20001/ TAKE JOHN'S SURVEY ABOUT COMICS: https://iu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_78L6fCCluZuR6fA MAIL: bronzeagemonsters@gmail.com  STORE: https://bronzeagemonsters.threadless.com/ SUPPORT THE SHOW: https://www.patreon.com/BronzeAgeMonsters JOIN US ON OUR DISCORD SERVER: https://discord.gg/wdXKUzpEh7

Larry Lieber, the legendary artist and writer who contributed to the early Marvel Universe alongside his brother Stan Lee, joins us to discuss his new book CHIRPS. After briefly touching on his storied career—which includes co-creating Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-Man, and his long run on The Rawhide Kid—Larry dove into this ambitious literary departure that combines elements of fantasy, family saga, and action thriller. CHIRPS follows the extraordinary journey of a genetically advanced parakeet who develops human-level intelligence and speech. Larry discusses the origin of the concept and story, how he chose the settings, and why this prose novel feels like the culmination of his decades of storytelling. You can follow Larry on Facebook.____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2725: Iron Man Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 20 October 2024 is Iron Man.Iron Man is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Co-created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber, and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in 1962 (cover dated March 1963) and received his own title with Iron Man #1 in 1968. Shortly after his creation, Iron Man became a founding member of the superhero team, the Avengers, alongside Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and the Hulk. Iron Man stories, individually and with the Avengers, have been published consistently since the character's creation.Iron Man is the superhero persona of Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark, a businessman and engineer who runs the weapons manufacturing company Stark Industries. When Stark was captured in a war zone and sustained a severe heart wound, he built his Iron Man armor and escaped his captors. Iron Man's suits of armor grant him superhuman strength, flight, energy projection, and other abilities. The character was created in response to the Vietnam War as Lee's attempt to create a likeable pro-war character. Since his creation, Iron Man has been used to explore political themes, with early Iron Man stories being set in the Cold War. The character's role as a weapons manufacturer proved controversial, and Marvel moved away from geopolitics by the 1970s. Instead, the stories began exploring themes such as civil unrest, technological advancement, corporate espionage, alcoholism, and governmental authority.Major Iron Man stories include "Demon in a Bottle" (1979), "Armor Wars" (1987–1988), "Extremis" (2005), and "Iron Man 2020" (2020). He is also a leading character in the company-wide stories Civil War (2006–2007), Dark Reign (2008–2009), and Civil War II (2016). Additional superhero characters have emerged from Iron Man's supporting cast, including James Rhodes as War Machine and Riri Williams as Ironheart, as well as reformed villains, Natasha Romanova as Black Widow and Clint Barton as Hawkeye. Iron Man's list of enemies includes his archenemy, the Mandarin, various supervillains of communist origin, and many of Stark's business rivals.Robert Downey Jr. portrayed Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008), the first film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and continued to portray the character until his final appearance in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Downey's portrayal popularized the character, elevating Iron Man into one of Marvel's most recognizable superheroes. Other adaptations of the character appear in animated direct-to-video films, television series, and video games. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Sunday, 20 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Iron Man on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Joey.

In this third and final installment of the James Gunn helmed GoTG stories, we follow as Peter/StarLord (Chris Pratt) is still reeling from the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the rest of the Guardians are trying to continue on.  This film's main focus is Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his backstory which is absolutely heartbreaking.  The High Evolutionary (exquisitely played by  Chukwudi Iwuji) is the big heavy of the story and the Guardians must band together to save the universe once again and one of their own.  This is a MUST WATCH!  The film clocks in at 2 h 30 m and is rated PG-13.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. The Not Funny Guys Present - Why?: Exploring the Philosophy, Rhetoric, and Cultural Impact of the MCUI am your host Dr. Jon and I'm joined by my best friend Eric. We are here to explore and discuss different aspects and ideas floating around in the MCU as we on our other podcast explore the films, here, we will explore some of the ideas that stick out in some vigorous debate. Starting by asking: Why?This is Episode 1:The Perils and Pitfalls of the Boy Genius Club: Tony Stark and Bruce BannerComic Book OriginsHulk came first. Dr. Robert Bruce Banne/Hulk was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and appeared in May 1962 in his own title, The Incredible Hulk. The Bruce and Hulk dynamic comes off in much of his early stories as a clear case of DID, dissociate identity disorder (what we used to call split personality disorder). Powers unlocked by Gamma Bomb exposure after saving a young man, Rick Jones.Lee admitted that his inspiration behind Hulk was a combination of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.Iron Man and Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark is based on brilliant inventor/manufacturer/all around recluse Howard Hughes. The character was created by Stan Lee, his brother Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. He first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963. Originally captured in Vietnam, not Afghanistan, he develops the armor to stay alive before escaping. It is noted that Stan Lee envisioned Tony Stark as a means to explore Cold War themes, American technology and industry engagement in the fight against Communism. In the MCUThere is a lot to say, and there will be more to discuss, but with their emergences in the MCU, we find two men who are qualified geniuses seeking to experiment on themselves. One, Tony Stark is the picture of necessity in his development of Iron Man. Two, Bruce Banner, a man driven to prove his experiment end up backfiring on his. Both realize that mistakes were made. Tony, it is his weapons who he becomes Iron Man to do away with and make things right. Bruce, once he becomes the Hulk is concerned about the dangers of his own blood being used to hurt others.Premise of DiscussionHow do we feel about this look considering their origins and place in our culture today? We Review Loki, the New Disney Plus Series from MarvelLoki is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber and penciller Jack Kirby, a version of the character first appeared in Venus #6. The modern-day incarnation of Loki first appeared in Journey into Mystery #85Loki is an important recurring figure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of 2021, he has appeared in every entry of the Thor films and in three of the four Avengers films. These six films are: Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame; and in Loki, a stand-alone Disney+ television series focused on the character. The character will also appear in What If...?,[5] an animated anthology TV series. Loki's character has borrowed a number of characteristics and storylines from across the more than fifty-year history of the character in Marvel Comics. As in the comics, Loki has generally been a villain in the MCU, variously attempting to conquer Asgard or Earth, and having allied himself with more powerful villains to achieve his aims. He has particular antagonism for his adoptive brother Thor, and is known to variously ally with and then betray Thor and others, and to regularly return from apparent death. In his development through the films, he becomes less of a supervillain and more of an antihero.

Danny Fingeroth joins Creator Talks to discuss his latest book A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee. Danny was the group editor for Spider-Man comics in the 1980s, wrote Deadly Foes of Spider-Man, Lethal Foes of Spider-Man, Dazzler, Venom: Deathtrap - The Vault and the entire 50 issue run of Darkhawk in the 1990s.  We discuss how Danny began working at Marvel for Larry Lieber, his mentor and the brother of Stan Lee. Danny also was the reprint editor for Marvel Comics and explains what the challenge was working with reprints.  What was the first Marvel Comic Danny read, and how do barber shops connect with his comic reading? What is the challenge to writing a good Spider-Man story? When we talk about A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee, we discuss how Danny addressed co-creator credit, how Lee collaborated with Steve Ditko, and how Stan Lee's own life was reflected in the cast of Spider-Man comics. When I Kick Back With The Creator, among the questions I ask Danny are what would be his island book, his beverage of choice, how Danny wants to be remembered and who was Stan Lee to him.  Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts To order A Marvelous Life: The Amazing Story of Stan Lee More about Danny Fingeroth

The Ayn Rand Simile Or Metaphor Theme Song Annual season continues and concludes here at the Fantasticast. Steve and Andy get to grips with Amazing Spider-Man Annual #4, featuring the latest team-up between the Human Torch and Spider-Man. Memories of Strange Tales Annual #2 are lingering, and with irrelevant villains, forced conflict, and leaps in storytelling logic so vast even Evel Knievel would think twice before leaping across them, there's good reason for these to linger. For, hidden underneath the surprisingly good artwork of Larry Lieber, is a Strange Tales story in all but name. This decpetion has put Steve in a particularly bad mood, and he puts this bad mood to good use this episode. He also uses it to respond to listener e-mails, in a very angry feedback session. Journey into Mystery is an American comic book series initially published by Atlas Comics, then by its successor, Marvel Comics. Initially a horror comics anthology, it changed to giant-monster and science fiction stories in the late 1950s. Beginning with issue #83 (cover dated Aug. 1962), it ran the superhero feature "The Mighty Thor", created by writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and artist Jack Kirby, and inspired by the mythological Norse thunder god. The series, which was renamed for its superhero star with issue #126 (March 1966), has been revived three times: in the 1970s as a horror anthology, and in the 1990s and 2010s with characters from Marvel's Thor mythos. The title was also used in 2019 for a limited series as part of the "War of the Realms" storyline.
