A flashback from EP. 61, with Graham Weston, CEO/Chairman of Rackspace (NYST: RXT), Texas Billionaire and multi-time entrepreneur. Graham shares the importance of developing tactics and not strategies. The "Big Thinker" gets a lot of credit for the ideas, but it is the executions that makes something come to life. Finding something simple that works is what allows you to deeply seed into the market- After that, you can start refining the big picture. Graham also shares that we often get in our own way of success, by trying to do everything at once. You have to sacrifice and focus on what the business needs first, then you can develop the full vision. Many businesses never leave the ground, because they're too heavy for lift off. We lost two big names connected with Classic Doctor Who this week: episode writer and novelist Chris Boucher, and actor Jane Sherwin. This episode features audio clips from Boucher's "The Robots of Death", and of Sherwin (with Frazer Hines and Graham Weston) in "The War Games". My guest this week is Jason McLaughlin (@JangoMac72), one of my fellow co-hosts from The Trap One Podcast, and the impresario behind Bearded Geek Toy Reviews over on YouTube. "UK Jason" offers us a tour of his recording studio and his impressive array of genre memorabilia. Topics discussed this week include the great Saturday morning TV shows of Sid and Marty Krofft, specifically "Far Out Space Nuts" and "Land of the Lost". UK Jason also takes his turn at "20 Questions", with surprising results. We also have Listener Mail, Jason's review of the "Stones of Blood" novelization, and much much more. Graham Weston, Former CEO & Chairman of Rackspace (NYSE: RXT), founder of Geekdom, Weston Ventures, Weston Urban and the 80/20 Foundation (to name a few) talks about the power of “thinking small” and how the tactics inform the strategy, not the other way around. Much of finding success is about executing something simple, very aggressively. Graham believes that one of the greatest contributions he made, in the early days at Rackspace, was reducing all the other services they had and focusing on just hosting. Doing one thing well, allows companies to have an advantage over established organizations. Graham also shares that the devil is who gets you to diversify, meaning, stick to what is working for a while before you decide to invest elsewhere. Any entrepreneurial endeavor also requires burning the ships and fully committing if you want to have a shot at finding success. Graham believes that many ideas and dreams are never realized because of fear. The fear of not having a stable job and being able to maintain a certain standard of living, is the very thing that can hold back the best ideas from coming to life. Being self-aware is also critical and understanding that sometimes you are better off being employee 7, instead of employee 1. It's about creating value and doing it the best way you know how. Self-awareness also applies when it comes to how long one stays the course. Tenacity in accomplishing a goal is commendable, but not if timing, product-market fit and lack of Team is not on your side. Nothing wrong with acknowledging that certain conditions are not present and moving onto something else. Sacrifice is also a crucial mindset, especially in the early days of any business. Not personal sacrifice (although that is part of it), but business sacrifice. It is easy to get lured into "Doing It All", but you will almost guarantee failure if you do. Graham's induction as a Legend, into the Texas Business Hall of Fame was for his contributions to Texas business and encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs. From the 80/20 Foundation to ventures like Geekdom, Graham continues to help companies and Teams across Texas reach their potential. Tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Graham Weston caught Covid from an asymptomatic carrier. Now, he's embarking on a mission to control the virus through cheap, widespread testing - starting off in one Texas town. WSJ's Rob Copeland explains the experiment.
SAN ANTONIO - It started as just an idea over lunch between three of San Antonio's power brokers at a downtown San Antonio restaurant. Now, only three months later, it's already grown into a multi-million dollar effort that's bringing highly accurate COVID-19 testing to tens of thousands of people in this area who are not showing any symptoms of the virus. And it's cheap enough, and so different than anything else out there, that the state of Texas is looking at it as a possible model for something much bigger. They believe it can help cut the spread of the virus by targeting ‘asymptomatic spreaders,' the estimated fifty percent of those who are infectious, but don't even realize they have it. I talked with J. Bruce Bugg, one of the three founders of what's now called Community Labs, about how it was born and what it could mean for all of us. I hope you check out our entire conversation in this week's San Antonio's Voice podcast. A LITTLE BACKGROUND Bugg explains how he and friends Graham Weston and Tullos Welles came up with the plan over lunch. As longtime San Antonio businessmen, they easily could have started Community Labs as a for-profit business but decided instead to make it a non-profit. Before that, the focus on ‘asymptomatic spreaders' of the virus came from Weston. He started researching the issue after he was infected by his son, who had just returned from England, but who had no symptoms. Weston and Bugg are also members of the ‘Strike Force' that Governor Greg Abbott formed in the spring, aimed at reopening Texas. Bugg talks about the specifics of how this plan can drastically cut the cost of PCR tests from $150 each to $35 each, and how a lab analyzing results is already up and running in the same building that houses the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Because Bugg is also involved in many different segments of the community, in the podcast we also talk some about what's being done to fix traffic congestion in the San Antonio and across the state, as well as problems facing businesses with PPP loans, and the challenges non-profit groups have during the pandemic. Bugg is Chairman of the Texas Transportation Commission, Chairman and Trustee of the Tobin Endowment, as well as the Chairman, President and CEO of Southwest Bancshares, Inc., and Chairman of The Bank of San Antonio. Contents [] // if (window.showTocToggle) { var tocShowText = "show"; var tocHideText = "hide"; showTocToggle(); } // [] Plot [] Synopsis On an alien planet the Doctor uncovers a diabolic plot to conquer the universe, with brainwashed soldiers abducted from Earth forced to fight in simulated environments, reflecting the periods in history from whence they were taken. The alien's aim is to produce a super army from the survivors, to this end they have been aided by a renegade from the Doctor's own race the 'Time Lords'. Joining forces with rebel soldiers, who have broken their conditioning, the Doctor and his companions foil the plan and stop the fighting. But the Doctor admits he needs the help of the Time Lords to return the soldiers to their own times, but in asking risks capture for his own past crimes including the theft of the TARDIS. After sending the message he and his companions attempt to evade capture, but are caught. Having returned the soldiers to Earth, the Time Lords erase Zoe and Jamie's memories of travelling with the Doctor, and return them to the point in time just before they entered the TARDIS. They then place the Doctor on trial for stealing the TARDIS and breaking the rule of non-interference. The Doctor presents a spirited defence citing his many battles against the evils of the universe. Accepting this defence the Time Lords announce his punishment is exile to Earth. In addition the operation of the TARDIS is wiped from his memory and his next is imposed. [] Continuity Patrick Troughton later reprised the role of the Second Doctor in , and . In the second of these, he expresses knowledge of events of the final episode of this serial, on the face of it a chronological impossibility, and in the last he is on an assignment for the Time Lords, which is incompatible with the events seen here. These facts gave rise to the theory, enabled by the aforementioned lack of on-screen depiction of the regeneration. The again faces trial in , the beginning of which refers to this previous trial. The time machines designed by the War Chief and used by the War Lords are called SIDRATs, an inversion of the name TARDIS. Though this name is used only once, and then merely in passing, on-screen during the serial (and pronounced "side-rat"), the expanded acronym is revealed to stand for "Space and Inter-Dimensional Robot All-purpose Transporter" in the 1979 novelisation by . It is repeated in the novel by Terrance Dicks, which forms a sequel to The War Games. The Second Doctor's appearance in Terrance Dicks' BBC Books novel, , occurs during this story. [] Firsts For the first time, this serial names the Doctor's race as the "Time Lords". Although his home planet () is seen, it would not be referenced by name until (1973). His reasons for leaving Gallifrey, and the fact that he stole the TARDIS, are also revealed.Aside from the Doctor and , the War Chief is the second person of the Doctor's race (after the ) to appear in the television series.Again the concept of is presented but not named in this serial, following /. The process was eventually named in , then retrospectively attributed to the earlier two changes of actors — first by series fans, then later by the early-'80s production team in . Until that point, there was some fan controversy over whether the Second Doctor had actually regenerated or merely had his appearance changed. While Troughton's Doctor is sentenced to a forced regeneration at the end of this serial, we do not actually see him regenerate into the (who first appears — briefly wearing the Troughton costume — in the next serial, ). The only other Doctor not to receive an on-screen regeneration is the , who has already regenerated into the at the start of the 2005 series. In the first Episode, the Second Doctor kisses Zoe. This display of platonic affection is the first time that the Doctor kisses one of his companions, though as the series went on it would be far from the last. [] Lasts In the final episode, the Time Lords wipe Zoe's mind and return her to the Wheel, where she encounters Tanya Lernov, a character from . A set from The Wheel in Space was rebuilt and actress (Tanya) rehired for this one scene. The audio drama shows an older Zoe having detailed dreams of her adventures with the Doctor, suspecting that something is blocking her memory, and seeing a psychiatric counsellor in an effort to understand the "dreams".This marks the last appearance of the TARDIS Control Room until in 1971, though the removed TARDIS console would be seen in the Doctor's headquarters laboratory in , and in a hut on the grounds of the titular project in .Episode 10 is the last episode of the original series to be produced in black and white.
