In A is for Architecture's 134th episode, the writer, publisher, former editor of Country Life and visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, Clive Aslet, discusses his book, Sir Edwin Lutyens: Britain's Greatest Architect? (Triglyph Books 2024) which describes the life, work and enduring importance of Edwin Lutyens, including the impact of Gertude Jekyll on his design imagination and Lutyens' pivotal role in both illustrating the British imperial project, and memorializing it's fallen.   Lutyens (1869–1944) was a renowned British architect celebrated for his enormous body of work which straddled the Victorian and early modern period, and incorporated country houses, war memorials, and monumental projects like New Delhi's Rashtrapati Bhavan, Castle Drogo in Devon, the Cenotaph in London and the Midland Bank in Manchester. Known for good nature, and his prodigious work rate, there is a case to be made – and Clive makes it well – for Edwin Lutyens to claim the crown of Britain's greatest architect. Lutyens' work exemplifies timeless elegance and architectural ingenuity. Beyond the binary of modern or not, ethical or not, Lutyens work stands alone, more than an emblem of its time. Have a listen and find out why. Clive can be found on his personal website and on Instagram. The book is linked above. +  Music credits: Bruno Gillick

Kate Middleton returned to her royal duties for the deeply meaningful Remembrance Sunday service, marking a rare back-to-back public appearance since her challenging health journey this year. Standing alongside Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, she looked visibly moved as she watched King Charles and Prince William lay wreaths in honor of fallen soldiers at the Cenotaph. Dressed in a black coat adorned with three poppies and a Dragoon Guards brooch—a nod to her role as the regiment's Colonel-in-Chief—Kate wore earrings that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth, adding a personal tribute to the day.A somber and visibly emotional King Charles led the Royal Family and the nation in honoring the fallen at the Remembrance Sunday service. The King, turning 76 this week and currently undergoing cancer treatment, observed the traditional two-minute silence before laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. Wearing the Royal Navy uniform of the Admiral of the Fleet, he paid his respects with a custom wreath resembling one used by King George VI. His heartfelt message on the wreath read: “In grateful remembrance of your service and sacrifice, Charles R.”Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward followed suit, each laying wreaths in tribute. Kate and Sophie watched from the Foreign Office balcony.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! Get all our shows on any player you love, hassle free! Originally a cavalry unit in the last days of horses in combat, whose officers were landed gentry leading men who largely worked for them, they were switched to the “mechanized cavalry” of tanks in 1942. Winning acclaim in the North African campaign, the Sherwood Rangers then spearheaded one of the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944; led the way across France; were the first British troops to cross into Germany, and contributed mightily to Germany's surrender in May 1945. Inspired by Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, the acclaimed WWII historian James Holland memorably profiles an extraordinary group of citizen soldiers constantly in harm's way. Their casualties were horrific, but their ranks immediately refilled. Informed by never-before-seen documents, letters, photographs, and other artifacts from Sherwood Rangers' families—an ongoing fraternity—and by his own deep knowledge of the war, Holland offers a uniquely intimate portrait of the war at ground level, introducing heretofore unknowns such as the Commanding Officer Stanley Christopherson, the squadron commander John Semken, Sergeant George Dring, and other memorable characters who helped the regiment become the single unit with the most battle honors of any ever in the British army. He weaves the Sherwood Rangers' exploits into the larger narrative and strategy of the war, and also brings fresh analysis to the tactics used. Following the Sherwood Rangers' brutal journey over the dramatic eleven months between D-Day and V-E Day, Holland presents a vivid and original perspective on the endgame of WWII in Europe. 1944 NORMANDY

Following the Sherwood Rangers' brutal journey over the dramatic eleven months between D-Day and V-E Day, Holland presents a vivid and original perspective on the endgame of WWII in Europe. 1944 NORMANDY

Metal Debate Album Review - Propagate Onslaught (Maimed)

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's Xander, and today I'm bringing you a review for the international brutal death metal band Maimed with their crushing debut titled Propagate Onslaught released on April 19th through Sewer Rot Records. Much like the newest Aborted record, nearly every song has either a special guest providing either additional vocals or a guitar solo. Speaking of the vocals, Kyle Messick is a ferocious monster on the microphone. His wet tunnel throat capabilities are absolutely disgusting sounding and I mean that in the best possible way. If you're into brutal death metal you'd love these type of low gutturals. The harsh growls are accompanied by the main guitarist Tom Hughes and bassist Ian Dygulski. But we also gotta mention the staple in very high octane adrenaline pumping type of music. What would brutal death metal even be with out a drummer who can provide machine gun fire esq gravity blast beats. Justin Wallisch does an incredible job behind the kit pounding the skins into oblivion. Apparently this record was mixed by Clinton Appelhanz who is also the bass player of Origin and Unmerciful. Before diving into this album track by track, I feel like its also worth mentioning the Torrential Gore (EP) is a great place to start when getting into the full-length. It serves as a brutal appetizer for the chaos that this album brings. Kicking things off, we have "Herald of the Maelstrom" which features the guitarist of Gridlink, Takafumi Matsubara who provides a solo. It's an all out in your face rager of a song much like the following track "The Slaughter of Lambs". This one features yet another guest who provides another solo. This time, it's Dan Ozcanli from the band Nucleus. Sometimes it takes a few listens before I can tell the difference in brutal death songs but I've heard the next track "Death that Obviates the Appellation of Graves" enough times to be able to tell when Eston Browne from Vulnificus steps in to lay down vocals. During my first couple of listens I didn't notice the slight shift vocal pitch. But after tuning my ears just right, I finally knew when Eston was on the mic. "Sewage Madness Folly" and "Armament & Brigandine" are the two back to back tracks that don't have guest features but "Arbalestier" has Andrew Lee, the guitarist of Ripped To Shreds shredding out two solos on this track. "Oppugnation" is the next track which features not just one but three guests vocalists. The first of them is Mike DiSalvo from Akurion and former Cryptopsy. The next vocalist is Batu Çetin of Cenotaph, particularly Cenotaph from Turkey. Not to be confused with the the other Cenotaph death metal band from Mexico. Batu was also formerly in the band Molested Divinity. Last but not least, we have Jake Shuker from Maysaloon. The album title track "Propagate Onslaught" has two guest guitar solos from Cody Knarr from Ascended Master. It also features guest vocalist Mallika from Emasculator. Most of you probably remember her being the vocalist for the band Abnormality. "Forging Providence (The Futility of the Cosmos)" is the last track on the album but does not feature any guests. What are my thoughts about this record as a whole? It has all the right ingredients to make a great brutal death metal album. Plenty of down tuned guitar chugs, bass drops, blast beats and gutturals. What more could you possibly add when it comes to this genre. The reason I don't typically rate brutal death metal records so high is because of the bare bones structure to this type of music. It's a simple recipe to get the mosh pits going and people's heads banging. The highest rating I ever give brutal death metal albums is 7/10. So if I give it that high of a rating, then it is what I would call high quality for that particular style. I love this Maimed record and I'm sure most extreme metalheads will. You can support these guys by following their social media and purchasing their music on their Bandcamp page.

Alongside their English contemporaries in Carcass & Napalm Death, Coventry's Bolt Thrower helped define extreme music throughout the late 80s & 90s. Their 3rd full-length, War Master, bridged the gap between their frantic grindcore roots and the pummeling, mid-paced death metal of future releases. Songs like “Profane Creation”, “Cenotaph”, and the album's titular track make the listener feel as though they're on the battlefield of an epic, futuristic war with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance. On Armistice Day, 2000 far right activists and football hooligans descended on London under the guise of "defending" the Cenotaph from pro-Palestine demonstrators. 10 days ago, Britain's hooligan chat groups were filled with the usual discussion of football and beer. But they quickly mobilised as the (now former) Home Secretary Braverman branded  pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", and as the The Daily Mail and Douglas Murray suggested the Cenotaph was under threat. All this coupled with Tommy Robinson's return to X, and his calls for a new anti-Islam far right street movement. The result: chaos on the streets of London, as far right activists and football hooligans battled police and attempted to confront Pro-Palestine demonstrators.HOPE not hate had teams on the ground and embedded within the far right all day, feeding live information about what exactly was going on and where.HOPE not hate's CEO, Nick Lowles, makes an appearance on Radio 43 to give us the full run-through of the precursors to the carnage, how the itself day panned out, and what the backlash has been for those on the march and for Tommy Robinson himself. With over 100 arrests already and presumably many more to come as police trawl through footage, it's looking as though Saturday will go down as another costly moment for Britain's far right.LINKS:Here's our analysis of how the hooligan chat groups turned to threats of violence. If you value our research and intelligence operations, please consider supporting HOPE not hate.Promoted by Nick Lowles on behalf of HOPE not hate Registered office Suite 1, 7th Floor, 50 Broadway, London SW1H 0BL, United Kingdom.

On this episode, Nick and Joe discuss what is a very fast-moving situation. The far-right are mobilising in London this weekend in opposition to a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Near the centre of this is Tommy Robinson, who was allowed back onto X (Twitter) on Monday, and who has mentioned repeatedly that he's wanted to get the English Defence League (EDL) back together.Home Secretary Braverman's recent comments calling pro-Palestine demonstrations “hate marches” have contributed to firing up an already hostile, and increasingly energised, mass of the former far-right street movement. Along with worrying rumblings from the underground, the literal Nazis in the National Front look set to make their Remembrance Day march to the Cenotaph as usual, whilst somehow avoiding being labelled a “hate march” by our Home Secretary…It's a muddied picture, but Joe helps us to get to grips with what we should expect to see. Thanks for listeningXP.s. Sety at Abydos (Part 3). The Osireion is an intriguing monument, one that attracts a huge amount of debate, discussion, and speculation. Its discovery was unexpected, its excavation was an enormous undertaking, and there are many uncertainties about its purpose, history, and overall significance. Still, with an extensive photographic record, some meticulous archaeological work, and a great deal of discussion, we can attempt to understand the Osireion. Who built the Osireion (and how old is it)? Why is it here, behind Sety's great temple? What purpose does it serve? In this episode, we explore these questions, and try to understand the monument overall. NOTE: Due to the complex nature of the Osireion's history (ancient and modern), archaeology, and the difficulty of describing it, I will do a video lecture on YouTube in future. Check this post, or the website, for links when published. Further Information: The Osireion is surprisingly well documented, both in archival photography and modern analysis and discussion. In this episode, I don't discuss the mechanics of ancient stone working. That will come in future. But for now, you may be interested in archaeologists' experiments to test ancient tools and the feasibility of carving hard stones (e.g., granite).
