Summon your Keyblade, board your Gummi Ship, and prepare to talk about a game that was baffling when it came out and even more baffling today! It's Kingdom Hearts, composed by Yoko Shimomura! This inexplicable 2002 Disney/Square Enix mashup game has since ballooned into mind-melting tangled mess of incomprehensible lore, but we're talking about the original that is....still kind of incomprehensible? (Actually we're talking about the 1.5 remix because it's the better version of the soundtrack). Come, guardian! Nate, Kari, Jordan, and Ryan unite to discuss KINGDOM HEARTS, the 2002 action-RPG / nostalgia stimulator from Final Fantasy developer Square Enix. We discuss arcane lore, breezy combat, and how this early cross-over sensation hits a little bit different in an era in which Disney owns a 95% stake in American pop culture. Kari relates a story of her brother giving some bad advice, Ryan goes to bat for the Gummi Ship, Nate makes a bad analogy and then stubbornly sticks to it for the remainder of the episode, and Jordan looks like Aladdin.

You’ve been patient, and it’s finally here. A little over two months since the conclusion of Tetsuya Nomura’s Dark Seeker trilogy, Lore Reasons tackles Kingdom Hearts III. (Naturally, it took us nearly three hours.) Austin, Patrick, and Cado join our resident loremaster, Natalie, as we pilot our Gummi Ship through a bunch of narratively useless Disney worlds en route to one hell of an ending. And that secret movie? THE SECRET MOVIE? It’s all here. Let’s ride. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our discussion of Kingdom Hearts. We talk about the end of the game, a few topics we'd never got around to, and of course, our takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Finished the game! Podcast breakdown: 0:47 KH Discussion 56:50 Break 57:20 Takeaways and Feedback Issues covered: the separation between the sky and the land, Brett playing again and again and again, leaning on Tinkerbell with default equipment, boss escalation at the end of the game, Tim's power problems, Ansem's final form, where we ended leveling up, wanting more item slots, when a game grabs you, Disney moments that pull on the nostalgia, nailing the animation and modeling archetypes of so many varying shapes/sizes/gaits, high degree of developer difficulty, contextual attacks, triggering attacks from menus, differences with the PS3/PS4 version, carryovers from another style of game, transitional games, making sense of the story, Ansem and his reports, relying on the journal or not, losing track of characters, the Gummi Ship construction, finding the Gummi Ship missions, minimal vs maximal design, relying on the Internet or a strategy guide for secret bosses and late-game content, having an ending that sets up a next game, smashing up two franchises, being the last moment in dev history that you could have smashed these together, trying to introduce people to JRPGs rather than billing it as Final Fantasy, mashing up mechanics and systems, bringing people in with action-oriented mechanics, being okay to be earnest, "cool" culture vs "hot" culture, main characters as children, Sora as child vs Ansem as adult, Sora as the stand-in for the child in all of us, canceling Squirtle's evolution to grind him forever, Brett obsessing over a thing, what we're playing next. After our smashing Games of the Year episode, we're back to our regularly scheduled RPG talk, helmed by the ebullient Greg Delmage! On this episode of Random Encounter: - Greg and Caitlin chat about the recent Anthem demo. Can BioWare outdo Bungie with their take on the Destiny formula? - Mike gushes about Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. One of the best Tales games gets even better with all the added content from the PS3 version of this classic RPG. - Caitlin tells the crew about Edge of Eternity, a gorgeous indie RPG that recently entered early access. It's got an interesting premise, a fusion of ATB and SRPG combat, and a huge, beautiful world that feels inspired by the Xenoblade series. - If you're looking for a mobile game that feels like a full-fledged RPG, Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space might just be worth checking out. Greg introduces us to the sights and sounds of this cute little game. - Kingdom Hearts III is finally here! Peter tells us all about the long-awaited conclusion to the beloved series. - We wrap things up with a listener question about how reviewing games affects our enjoyment of them. Editor's Note: We had some technical difficulties with this episode, so you may hear some background noise from time to time. Rest assured, we are working on improving the quality of our recordings, and we apologize for this little mishap. Featuring: Greg Delmage, Caitlin Argyros, Mike Sollosi, Peter Triezenberg Questions? Ish & Justin are jumping into their Gummi Ship, putting on their Mickey Ears, & zipping up all their zippers as they take on trivia on Disney, Final Fantasy, Heartless, Nobodies, Organization XIII–really a turducken stuffed into a cornucopia of trivia. End Boss Andrew Linde (co-founder, Benview Network) quizzes our hosts on the “Kingdom Hearts”...
In the thirtieth episode of Otaku Brothers, Rusty and Ryan take on the arduous task of explaining and making sense of the entirety of Kingdom Hearts’ story. Before that, they scoff at the seemingly plausible leaked Smash Ultimate DLC characters, and of course discuss the games they’ve been playing recently. Finally, the guys take a Gummi Ship straight into the Twilight Zone (Town), with no signs of returning. They first rank all of the Kingdom Hearts games, then explain the story for each game in the series, and finally discuss their hopes and dreams for the soon to be released Kingdom Hearts 3. There's been another mini Kingdom Hearts 3 news explosion, but we've also had some rather interesting questions asked this episode! As part of a new wave of press, the Kingdom Hearts 3 team have spoken more about the role of the Gummi Ship in this latest iteration, that there will be secret World Bosses that they won't reveal before launch and they also went into detail about the whole localisation process. We've also got some great questions from the community around unexpected worlds we think will appear in Kingdom Hearts 3, other characters we'd like to play as and whether we think the next game will act as a reboot for the franchise!
With Final Fantasy XV receiving so much DLC, we turn our attentions to what this might mean for Kingdom Hearts 3. It's one of the main questions that Branden and Churro run-through this episode, which also features a ton of other discussions. There's even more detailed analysis from the D23 Expo video, including some snippets from Nomura about the fact everything they've shown is still very much a WIP. We've also got more information on the Gummi Ship and some new details around the Tangled World! And to round out the episode, we've got a question about Sora's changing hair colour! Enjoy :D

It makes for a rather varied episode, and we hope you enjoy it!
Kingdom Hearts - Part 1 Check out our new, limited time only store: http://coachsassistant.gtmsportswear.com/squareroots It's a relatively smut-free episode as we take a raft through the galaxy that is Kingdom Hearts. All the hosts are amazed by John's flawless and totally not terrifying Donald Duck impression as well as David Boreanis's acting. Other questions today include: what's a gummi ship? Does John find Jimminy Cricket attractive? Why are there only six dwarves? Do we really have to do this Gummi Ship thing every time we travel between planets? Why is Cinderella a brunette? WHY IS IT CALLED A GUMMI SHIP? Why is Squall called Leon? Are there really only six dwarves on that stained glass? Also: 1960s Producers Jim and Johnny come back! We get another Even Stevens shout out, making it the second most referenced show on Square Roots? This week: We play through until you get the Gummi Ship.
