As they attempt to save the marriage of one of their listeners, Brad and Dave consider the best path for a cartoonist who wishes to pursue a master's degree. Would a Master's in Fine Arts be the right choice, or would a Master's in Business Administration be the better option? Considering the expense, perhaps the best choice is to avoid both! After grappling with that dilemma, Susan MacTaggart stops by to share a personal affirmation with a member of the ComicLab community.Today's ShowIs a Master's Degree in comics worthwhile?Susan MacTaggart's AffirmationUPDATE: Brad and Dave's Wikipedia pagesMixing word-balloon stylesSummaryIn this episode, the hosts discuss the importance of education for cartoonists, debating the merits of pursuing a Master's in Fine Arts (MFA) versus a Master's in Business Administration (MBA). The discussion highlights the value of writing skills in comics and the necessity of understanding business principles in today's publishing climate. In this episode, the hosts delve into the intersection of art and marketing, discussing the value of formal education, such as an MFA, in developing a creative career. They explore the importance of self-teaching versus structured learning, emphasizing personal growth and the impact of higher education on career paths. The conversation also touches on community engagement through personal affirmations and mid-show updates, culminating in discussing word balloon techniques in comics. In this episode, Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett delve into the intricacies of comic storytelling, focusing on the use of word balloons and their aesthetic implications. They discuss the evolution of comic communication, the philosophy behind how comics convey messages, and the unique structure of two-panel comics. The conversation highlights the balance between visual elements and text, exploring how these components enhance storytelling in comics.TakeawaysEducation in the arts should focus on writing, not just drawing. An MFA may not provide the specific skills needed for comics compared to an MBA.Understanding business and marketing is crucial for independent cartoonists today.Higher education can provide a shortcut to knowledge that would take years to learn otherwise. Not all education needs to have a direct financial return on investment. The subjective nature of art can complicate grading in MFA programs.Scholarships can help alleviate the financial burden of higher education.Choosing between an MFA and an MBA depends on personal career goals and interests. The art itself is not enough; marketing plays a crucial role.An MFA can provide valuable insights into salesmanship and marketing. The experience gained from an MFA depends on the student's openness to feedback. Many successful cartoonists do not have an MFA, indicating it's not essential for success.Self-teaching can be as effective as formal education, depending on the individual's learning style.Personal growth and happiness can come from pursuing higher education, even if it doesn't directly impact career success.Community engagement is vital for creators, as seen in the personal affirmations segment.Word balloon techniques vary based on the comic's style and background complexity. The hosts share humorous anecdotes about their Wikipedia pages, highlighting the challenges of self-presentation.The conversation emphasizes the importance of adapting techniques to fit the evolving art style. Word balloons can affect the aesthetics of a comic.Using a floater can conserve space in a panel.Breaking up dialogue into multiple balloons improves readability.Floaters can convey whispers or asides effectively.Aesthetics sometimes dictate the choice between word balloons and floaters. The history of word balloons reflects the evolution of comic art.Comics often rely on a visual punchline that follows a setup.Two-panel comics can exist in greeting cards and other formats. The construction of comics can influence how they are perceived. The philosophy of comic communication is complex and evolving. For the 32nd episode of "Reading the Art World," host Megan Fox Kelly speaks with Mary Morton, Curator and Head of the Department of French Paintings, and Kimberly Jones, Curator of 19th Century French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Together, they discuss their work on the landmark exhibition, “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment,” and the accompanying exhibition catalogue. The conversation centers on the daring spirit of the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, a moment that saw artists defy the prestigious Paris Salon to showcase new ways of capturing modern life. Jones and Morton share insights into the forces behind Impressionism's revolutionary appeal, from the political and social upheavals in France to the transformation of Paris under Haussmannization. They explain how these changes inspired artists to redefine not only the subjects they painted but also how art itself was exhibited and experienced. This exhibition and catalog shine a light on lesser-known figures who were critical to the movement's evolution, challenging visitors to unlearn what they think they know about Impressionism. Ted is joined by Patrick Carey, a 2023 graduate of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program at Colorado State University.Patrick's work in progress is the thesis he wrote as part of that program. Tentatively titled Keepers, it's a novel set roughly 25 years in the future when the United States is mired in a second Great Depression. This has prompted the government to basically invent jobs for people to do, including reinstalling lighthouse keepers across the Great Lakes. The book follows three such keepers working on an island in northern Lake Michigan who are instructed daily via fax machine to build parts of something without knowing what it's going to become. Not knowing why they're really there, they start experiencing things suggesting there might be a supernatural presence or an unacknowledged human history on the island.Patrick and Ted talked about the process of choosing a thesis/novel topic, the different considerations that would lead you to write in past versus present tense as well as first versus third person, writing workshops, crafting a story about lighthouse keepers when you yourself are not one, and how there's no one way to write a book.Working Drafts episodes and info for requesting transcripts as well as more details about Ted and his books are available on his website, thetedfox.com.

When this week's guest, author Patricia Crisafulli, and I first got on a call together she expressed that she wasn't quite sure if she would be the right fit for my audience. She wondered if Creative Fiction was "spiritual" enough for the show. After all of 30 seconds talking we both decided, of course it is! What could be more Spiritual than Divine Creation of stories, ideas, and expressions of the Human experience? Patricia believes that stories – all stories – hold deep truths. They're the “myths of meaning” for our own time. As we capture, polish, share, and retell our stories, we find layers of new meaning. They don't have to be autobiographical to show us either our current world-view or an alternate world-view. On this episode Patricia shares some unique concepts from her journey as a creative writer including writing as an act of faith & why we have to find the courage – and give ourselves the permission – to believe deeply in ourselves and the importance of our stories. How the writer's path is one of rejection – and redirection. It's simply part of the process. And how we all need to find ways to become empowered – not defeated – as we face, process, and ultimately move beyond the “no” and reach the “yes.”Join the Women Waken Community on Instagram Here: https://tinyurl.com/522duz2c You can learn more about Patricia & find her books here:Patricia Crisafulli is an award-winning writer and a New York Times bestselling author. Welcome back to The Abundant Artist, the show that dispels the myth of “the starving artist” and shares how you can live an abundant life as an artist and make a living from your talent one interview at a time. Joining the podcast today is Adam Hall, who describes himself as “an artist who paints New Orleans''. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Adam's tryst with New Orleans started when he joined Tulane University there to obtain an undergraduate degree in studio art and history. Although later Adam studied in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (MFA), he eventually decided to move back to New Orleans and settle there. The impact of Hurricane Katrina is visible in Adam's art, especially in his black-and-white, burnt-paper three-dimensional collages that explored themes of loss and upheaval. A visit to Paris in 2009 and the study of impressionist painters convinced him to switch to impressionist oil paintings. In this episode, Adam explains why he calls New Orleans his home, his metamorphosis from a sculptor/installation artist to an impressionist painter, how Hurricane Katrina has inspired his artworks, and how he manages the business side of his art career. Key Takeaways: [:33] Cory reminisces how he has known Adam since 2013. [4:05] Why Adam has found his “artistic home” in New Orleans. [5:45] How Adam's website captures the fascinating evolution of his artworks. [7:15] Adam was more into sculptures and installations during grad school. Why has he taken up painting after moving to New Orleans? [10:05] How has Hurricane Katrina shaped Adam's artistic expressions? [12:38] Why it was important for Adam to create artworks that looked similar to oak trees. [20:12] How over time Adam coached himself to make impressionist paintings of New Orleans. [32:30] How Adam has designed his life for selling paintings. [33:40] Adam enjoys the business side of his art career. It's not “work” for him. [36:40] How Adam's New Orleans paintings changed over time and why. [38:14] How the pandemic impacted Adam's choice of subjects for paintings. [41:11] How did Adam figure out what works for him in the business side? How TAA class helped Adam with finding his “voice”. [46:14] What kind of write-ups Adam does regularly for his collectors. How does he decide on what to write? [49:07] Social media and his website helped Adam sell his paintings more than outdoor shows. [51:11] What's working for Adam on social media? [53:00] What's Adam excited about his art business at the moment? [55:03] Cory thanks Adam for joining the podcast! BIO:Sip & Share Wines is a boutique winery producing a diversity of handcrafted vegan wines. We're passionate about creating community with wine, especially for wine lovers often overlooked and underrepresented by the wine industry. Our wines are approachable to all palates, fun and made to sip and share. Purchase a bottle or join the wine club at sipandsharewines.com.In January 2019, Sip & Share Wines released the 7 Words Wine Collection, all of the wines are vegan. In January 2020, we released the Gem Collection of limited production wines.Sip & Share Wines Conjure Zinfandel was featured in Forbes Magazine as one of the 10 drinks for the summer. Nicole Kearney, Sip & Share Wines' Winemaker/Founder was named one of 40 African American Tastemakers (Under/Over 40) by Sabrina Jackson. We've participated in The Hue Society's The Black Wine Experience wine tasting and Roses & Rose' Brunch at Essence Fest in 2019 and 2018 in New Orleans. Being there lead to being named by Kiarra Sylvester as one of “5 Black- Owned Wines You Should Be Sipping Right Now” published on Xonecole.com.The Indianapolis Recorder has followed our growth with two stories that show where we are now and where we began.Nicole's serious relationship with wine began in 2008, when she attended graduate school for her Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in Dramatic Writing at Spalding University, Low Residency MFA program, in Louisville, Kentucky. Surrounded by writers of all genres – playwrights, screenwriters, fiction, non-fiction, and poets they shared about their lives and craft while sipping wine. Over two years, they would continue to sip and share wines with each other. It was there her passion for wine knowledge and the spark for her future endeavor was ignited. In 2011, Nicole's good friend Mark gifted her a 32 bottle wine refrigerator as a housewarming gift. Of course, she had to fill it! She had a party asking people to bring wine. She gave them some parameters (She drank red almost exclusively at that time) and sent her friends on a wine hunt around town. It was an incredible success. Her guests got to try different wines and her wine chest was magically filled. Little did she know, she had just hosted her first home wine tasting. In December 2013, her friend Niesha invited her to a wine tasting. She accepted without hesitation. The hostess, Marla graciously welcomed Nicole into her home. The wine tasting was fantastic, conducted by an independent representative of a national home wine tasting company. Nicole tasted new wines, beginning a love affair with South African wines. The group of women she was introduced to that night bonded over their enjoyment of wine. They decided to host a party monthly at each other's homes. In January 2014, Nicole's friend had a wine tasting in her home. The time for the tasting to begin was approaching, Nicole asked “Where was the ‘wine lady?' Her friend answered she didn't know. She had not talked to her in a month. Having a house full of guests, Nicole gathered a few of her wines then called a friend, Taffanee and asked to “borrow” a few more bottles. She brought a case. That night Nicole became ‘The Wine Lady.'Nicole guided the guests through a tasting of twelve wines from around the world, sharing what she learned with others. That night she helped many people find their way from, “I only drink…” to, “Wow, this wine is delicious.” This gave me great pleasure. Her friends suggested she consider getting into the wine business. She started doing some initial research, then moved on with my life. She had plays and streaming series to finish writing. Her interest in being in the wine industry was refueled in Spring 2015 after several incidents occurred at corporate wine tastings – her name not being on the attendee list, her guests almost being turned away, being seated in the back and continuously told to be quiet despite her wine tribe purchasing a lot of wine. The spark was reignited. In June 2016, Nicole attended Open Bite Night, a community block party to support a friend. I mentioned to a friend, Niesha, “There should be a vendor who only sells adult beverages.” She said, “Why not you?” A few weeks later, Niesha contacted me to let me know she had registered me for the event. There was no charge for first-time participants and they provided the table and chairs. I decided to no longer put off my dream and step out on faith. “Sip & Share Wines” was born.On October 1, 2016, Sip & Share officially opened for business at Open Bite Night: Ridiculous. We SOLD OUT of our handcrafted Red and White Sangrias (now Abundance and Awaken). The Sangrias quickly gained a following, from being served by-the-glass out of a punch bowl to people wanting more than a glass to enjoy as they checked out the various vendors at the different events where we set up.Enter Mason jars with straws in the lids. It was a hit! Then folks begin to ask to take Sip & Share Sangrias home with them. In March 2018, Sip & Share Wines became a licensed federal winery and began the process of producing a diversity of vegan wines.Gratitude to everyone who has supported, continues to support and those who will support Sip & Share Wines on our journey. “My serious relationship with wine began in 2008, when I attended graduate school for my Master in Fine Arts (MFA) at Spalding University, Low Residency MFA program, in Louisville, Kentucky. Surrounded by writers of all genres – playwrights, screenwriters, fiction, non-fiction, and poets – we discussed our lives, our work, and our craft over drinks. Wine, to be specific. Each subsequent residency we would bring wines to introduce to each other. It was there my passion for wine was ignited. I shared what I learned with others; helping many a wine drinker find their way from, “I only drink…” to, “Wow, this wine is delicious.” This always gave me great pleasure. In 2011, my good friend Mark gifted me a 32 bottle wine refrigerator as a housewarming gift. Of course, I had to fill it! I had a party asking people to bring wine. I gave them some parameters (I drank red almost exclusively at that time) and sent my friends on a wine hunt around town. It was an incredible success. My guests got to try different wines and my wine chest was magically filled. Little did I know, I had just hosted my first home wine tasting. In 2015, my interest in doing home wine tastings was refueled after several incidents occurred at corporate wine tastings – my name not being on the attendee list, my guests almost being turned away, being seated in the back, and sushed continuously despite my wine tribe purchasing wine. The spark was ignited, a dream set in motion. Sip & Share Wine started and still continues to do home wine tastings pouring African American and women winemakers into the intimacy of your home. We bring a fun experience, wine education, and build awareness about African American wines/winemakers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/afrosandknivespod/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/afrosandknivespod/support

This Channel Mastery episode originally aired as a live webcast produced by Outdoor Retailer in late June 2020. The webcast, The Weekly Chat, is an extension of The Weekly, a digital magazine for Outdoor Retailer. It launched in the face of the pandemic and economic shutdown and was very well attended by Outdoor Retailer’s audience. Channel Mastery host, Kristin Carpenter, was asked to appear on the show with Doug Schnitzpahn to discuss the battle for trust, and engagement, and how more traditional media institutions can serve today's ever evolving consumer as they search to build trust and community online. Traditional media entities are searching for ways to bring value to their audiences and readerships. Let’s face it - media is being disrupted in a big way and has been for the past few years. People are continually re-trained to expect both content and community to be presented in new ways and on new channels, and this evolution is not slowing down. There isn’t a playbook for the pandemic and now recession so it’s our responsibility as business leaders to listen to and watch where the consumers are going, how they’re getting there, and adjust our way of thinking to best serve that North Star - our target consumers/shoppers. Doug and Kristin dive in on this topic as it pertains to the discovery facet of the consumer decision journey. Doug Schnitzpahn is an experienced innovative freelance writer, editor, and team leader with a demonstrated history of working in the publishing industry. He is skilled in Journalism, Corporate Communications, Social Media, Digital Media, and Editing. Doug is a strong media and communication professional with a Master of Fine Arts - MFA focused in Creative Writing from University of Washington.
In honor of Juneteenth, we're re-releasing the audio of a live event from January 2018 at the PRX Podcast Garage, titled "Keepers of the Culture: A Celebration Of Maduna And Holmes." The evening was a celebration of two award-winning artists, collaborators, and friends, whose work was on display at the garage's exhibition space. Their sculptures, masks, and collage-based works are an exploration of ancestral voices, family histories, and the power of hope, faith and self-determination. The evening was divided into two parts: a conversation between Ekua and Tamar, which included audio produced around Ekua's collage, "All Fly Home," and an exploration of interpretation and storytelling - as applicable to art as it is to podcasting. The second part was a powerful lecture by art historian Barry Gaither, on Vuzi's work, Ekua's work, and the myriad roles artists and viewers have the joy and the responsibility of playing for and with one another. Ekua Holmes is a painter and collage artist who uses news clippings, photographs, vibrant color, and skillful composition to infuse her work with energy. Her layered, abstract creations convey a sense of unity and evoke memories that are both personal and universal. In her collages, she revisits the joy and challenges of childhood through adult eyes. These works reexamine the foundational relationships, games, and rule that we learn at an early age and apply throughout our lives. Vuzi Maduna (1940 - 2007) was a sculptor and painter who spent much of his life as an artist resident of the Gallery at the Piano Factory in Boston. Maduna began his exploration of African culture with a study of African religions which led him to further examine and interpret the traditional embodiment of belief and myth. Educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he was a member of the African American Master Artists in Residency Program of Northeastern University. His work has been exhibited in the MFA and the ICA, as well as in Tokyo and the People's Republic of China. Yet Maduna returned to the neighborhoods of his childhood to create pieces that remind us of the African heritage that many in the community share. His public installations are located in Cambridge (the Margaret Fuller House, the Cambridge Community Center, The King School) and in the Boston area, including The Judge, in Roxbury. Edmund Barry Gaither is the founding Director and Curator of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA), an organization that he developed from a concept to an institution with collections exceeding three thousand objects and a thirty-two year history of exhibitions celebrating the visual arts heritage of black people worldwide. Gaither is also Special Consultant at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston where he has served as curator for eight exhibitions including a ground breaking show in l970, Afro-American Artists: New York and Boston. Her primary area of exploration surrounds the study of phenomenology, the limitations of perceived space and interactive spatial aesthetics. A highly acclaimed critic and essayist, Amore has written for leading publications and authored exhibition catalogues since 2005. Amore is currently a visiting critic and curator for selected organizations and academic institutions including Parsons School of Design, The New School University, New York; Residency Unlimited, New York and Art Omi Artists Residency, New York.Amore co-founded, alongside William Stover, a non-profit arts organization titled Re-Sited, which re-evaluates the architecture of “site” and the “conceptual space”- its materiality, particularities and relationship to the work of art. Re-Sited examines the spatial intersections between sculpture, architecture and space. The collaborative recently curated Traveling Spaces, a group exhibition that addressed ideas of “site” and “space” and questioned how we travel and move through space. The exhibition featured a series of site interventions and perceptual interruptions, which included works by Caroline Cloutier and Willem Besselink. In 2017, Re-Sited curated Sites of Knowledge at Jane Lombard Gallery, New York. Sites of Knowledge examined spatial semiotics and language as a visual structure of knowledge, and included works by Richard Artschwager, Henri Chopin, Sophie Tottie and Michael Rakowitz. Amore curated a solo exhibition titled ThreeFold, on Australian/American installation artist Natasha Johns-Messenger, at El Museo de Los Sures, in New York. ThreeFold was a large-scale site installation, an optical prism, predominantly made of mirrors and periscopic devices. Amore has also been the curatorial advisor for public art-work commissions both locally and in Australia, and continues today to advise for a private dealer based in New York City, alongside her curatorial projects. The exhibition featured over thirty-five artists who examined early scripture including, readings from the Torah, the Talmud and biblical prescriptions about structures of knowledge and the environment. Amore held the position as Exhibition Manager and Artist Liaison at Arc One Gallery, Melbourne, Australia for over seven years, where she managed Australia's most important contemporary artists. She received a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art Criticism and Writing, at SVA, New York in 2014, and a Degree in Philosophy, History of Ideas, and a B.A in Creative Writing (Literature) and Art History (Minor) in 2005, Melbourne Australia, where she graduated with honors and also commenced a bachelor of psychology for two years.

Johnson Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. Fine has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Center for Advancement Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and the Institute for Advanced Study. Paulette Boudreaux shared her inspiring life story during a panel discussion at the Association of Writers & Writing Program (AWP) Conference, in February 2017. The panel, Second Blooming: Women Authors Debuting After Fifty, attracted a standing-room only crowd, and I was fortunate to be in the audience. As Paulette and other writers told their stories, it seemed that a sisterhood was being formed and the audience became an extended part of the panel. We bonded through cheers, laughter, and gasps of exasperated recognition when an author described how she persevered through yet another indignity or insult. Paulette joined me on the podcast to share just some of the fascinating experiences that she taps into when writing her southern-based fiction. She says that despite living on the West Coast most of her life, her inner monologue has a Southern drawl. During out discussion, Paulette describes moving from Mississippi to San Francisco in 1970 in the midst of a school desegregation movement and how that impacted her. She shares the multi-decade journey that led to her groundbreaking novel, Mulberry, being published by Carolina Wren Press in October 2015. Her experiences include working as a journalist, a public relations professional, an English professor, and earning her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree all while raising her daughter as a single mother. If you are considering a transition in your life, you may be interested in my Discover What’s Next coaching program. Allow me to help you create a more fulfilling future. Kirstine Reiner Hansen is an artist with a vibrant story. On this episode of Savvy Painter, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Kirstine to discuss her successful and thriving career as a “Self taught artist.” Our discussion ranges from the pros and cons of getting a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA), her experience as a self taught painter, keeping her audience updated, and making a substantial shift in her method and style of painting. Kirstine is a generous and gracious guest and I believe you will learn a lot from her wealth of knowledge and insight. Make sure to listen to this episode of Savvy Painter! Is it important to keep your audience invested and interested in your work? In the social media age, how important is it to keep your audience interested? I get the wonderful opportunity to sit down with artist Kirstine Reiner Hansen to discuss the importance of updating and including your audience on your journey. Much of our thinking around this idea is just reminding our audience that we are still around and working out our creative process. This can take the form of snapping a picture of a paint brush and posting it Instagram or giving them an exclusive “Peek” on our upcoming project. In this new global and interconnect society, artists need to think about the steps they can take to ensure their audience is engaged. Learn more from our in depth conversation on this episode of Savvy Painter! What is it like being a “Self taught artist” Discovering your vocation doesn’t usually come easy most people. For those who find their “calling” easily, even that can be fraught with uncertainty. Kirstine Reiner Hansen discovered her passion and calling as an artist. As she has developed and grown as an artist and has experienced different art communities, Kirstine has struggled with the fact that she never procured her Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. This is a hotly debated issue among many artists, is the MFA really necessary to have a credible and successful career as an artist? Kirstine came to the conclusion that for her, even though it would be nice, the MFA is not necessary. To hear more about Kirstine’s journey as a “Self taught artist”, listen to this episode of Savvy Painter. Making the shift from observational to photo reference. Leaving a style or way of doing things for so long can be difficult. Not many people enjoy and embrace change. One of the keys to moving from a place of comfort to a new and possibly better place is understanding that your current location is unacceptable. Kirstine Reiner Hansen understood this truth. She had been practicing an observational form of painting for many years but soon realized that she need to make a change. It wasn’t easy and it took a lot of courage and boldness to push into a new realm of painting. She now uses photo references in her painting and she is thrilled that she made the change. To hear more about Kirstine’s process and what it took for her make that leap, listen to this episode of Savvy Painter! An unconventional method of painting Every artist has their own unique way of preparing themselves before they approach the canvas. I found Kirstine Reiner Hansen’s approach to her projects rather unconventional. As she prepares her canvas and other items (she uses collage work as well), Kirstine closes her eyes and picks objects at random and then figures out how to incorporate them into her work. She feels that it is the only way she can be fresh and present her work as surprising. The most exciting aspect for Kirstine about working this way is that she sees her work as a sort of intuitive puzzle. She has to stay very alert to figure out what step to take next. To hear more about Kirstine’s fascinating process, listen to this episode of Savvy Painter! Outline of This Episode [0:36] Background of guest: Kirstine Reiner Hansen.
