Send us a textTessa Hulls is the 2025 Pulitzer prize winner for her graphic  memoir Feeding Ghosts. Tessa is only the second graphic novelist to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, the first being Art Speigleman for Maus in 1992. Tessa was kitchen staff for this past legislative session in Juneau. She worked in the legislative lounge every day making legislators' breakfasts and lunches. No one knew she was an author and certainly no one expected the woman serving us our soup to be announced as the 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner. We discuss her incognito lounge staff role and how it helped her cope with her newfound international fame. Here is a description of Hulls' book which we will be discussing today:"Feeding Ghosts is a powerful graphic memoir that explores the enduring impact of history and generational trauma on three generations of Chinese women. The memoir follows Hulls' grandmother, Sun Yi, a journalist who fled Shanghai after the 1949 Communist victory, and the ways her experiences shaped her daughter and granddaughter. The book delves into themes of love, grief, exile, identity, and the haunting legacy of trauma."

Yesterday, Seattle-based author Tessa Hulls won a Pulitzer Prize for her graphic novel "Feeding Ghosts." Hulls' first published book starts with her Chinese grandmother, Sun Yi, a journalist and author who fled Shanghai after the Communist Revolution. Then, the narrative shifts -- to her mother Rose, the daughter of a Swiss diplomat, essentially raised in a Hong Kong boarding school after her mother was institutionalized. And finally to Hulls herself, who is trying to bring peace to her family ghosts. 10,000 Things host and author Shin Yu Pai sat down Hulls for Soundside last year. We're re-sharing our original interview to highlight Hulls' big achievement. A Note from James I had such a great conversation with my good friend, Sun Yi on his podcast, called Authentic as F*ck, and I felt like I had to say the full name of the podcast because I wanna be authentic. Authenticity is complex, and being yourself isn't always straightforward. With friends, I'm different than when giving a talk or doing a podcast. But authenticity involves knowing who you are in different contexts and what you value. Sun Yi and I explored this in-depth, discussing why being truly authentic often means embracing controversy, taking risks with your content, and understanding that the truth of who you are can change based on the context. Episode Description James speaks with Sun Yi, host of Authentic as F*ck, about the nuances of personal branding, vulnerability, and authenticity. This candid conversation explores why true authenticity can lead to both rejection and opportunity, emphasizing the importance of publishing ideas that genuinely scare you. Listeners will learn why radical openness about successes and failures can be both costly and rewarding, and how traditional perspectives on success and failure often overlook essential lessons about humility and resilience. What You'll Learn: How authenticity can lead to controversy but also open new doors. Why publishing content that genuinely scares you is crucial for meaningful impact. The surprising benefits—and real costs—of being fully transparent about your experiences. How traditional ideas about success and failure can be misleading. Understanding the complexities behind creating content that truly resonates and why some content unexpectedly goes viral. If you're a part of the Seattle arts scene, chances are you've come across Tessa Hulls. She has a hand in many local creative communities, including Seattle Arts & Lectures (where you might have spotted her illustrations on the 2021 Summer Book Bingo Card!), the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and the Henry Art Museum. She's also the lead artist in the Wing Luke Museum exhibit “Nobody Lives Here,” which explores the impacts of how the I-5 construction ran right through the Chinatown International District in the 1960s. It's no surprise then that Hulls is passionate about mixing art and historical research, looking at how past events echo throughout daily relationships today. She explores these themes in her debut book, Feeding Ghosts, a graphic novel memoir that tells the story of three generations of women in her family: her Chinese grandmother Sun Yi; her mother, Rose; and herself. Sun Yi, who fled Communist China for Hong Kong, published a celebrated memoir about her persecution and survival, but then later succumbed to mental illness. Determined to face the history that shaped her family, Tessa exposes the wounds that haunt generations and the love that holds them together. Hulls is a self-proclaimed “compulsive genre-hopper,” mixing personal and political histories with travel writing and visual art. This might explain why she's so well-intertwined in Seattle's art scene, using her creativity to build community and create conversations about the impacts of our shared history. Tessa Hulls is an artist, a writer, and an adventurer. Her essays have appeared in The Washington Post, Atlas Obscura, and Adventure Journal, and her comics have been published in The Rumpus, City Arts, and SPARK. She has received grants from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and 4Culture, and she is a fellowship recipient from the Washington Artist Trust. Feeding Ghosts is her first book. Putsata Reang is a Cambodian-born author and a journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Politico, The Guardian, Ms., The San Jose Mercury News, and The Seattle Times, among other publications. She is an alumna of residencies at Hedgebrook, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and Mineral School, and she has received fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and Jack Straw Cultural Center.   Buy the Companion Book Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir Third Place Books

In my podcast conversations with authors, anthropologists, creatives, and change-makers, we often delve into their personal stories, encompassing their triumphs and setbacks, as well as their spiritual practices and strategies for leading a more fulfilling life. However, today's conversation is a bit different from the norm.Today, I'm privileged to engage in conversation with Sun Yi, a distinguished personal branding expert and the visionary founder of Night Owls, an acclaimed digital agency catering to esteemed clients like Mel Robbins, Jay Shetty, Marc Randolph, and Gabby Bernstein.Despite Sun's professional collaborations with prominent figures in the self-transformation space, he boldly admits his disinterest in practices such as yoga, mantras, or the ritual of smudging his home. Yet, his online presence, characterized by candid insights, thought-provoking slogans, and astute business counsel, immediately captivated my attention, resonating deeply with me as both an occasional social media gawker and a prospective client.Upon delving further into Sun Yi's work, I eagerly enrolled in his three-month marketing mentorship program. Through this journey, I gained invaluable lessons on branding, marketing tactics, the art of storytelling, authenticity, and the significance of prioritizing both customer service and personal fulfillment.Sun Yi's multifaceted expertise extends beyond his role as an entrepreneur and storyteller; he's also a TEDx speaker and the driving force behind Night Owls and Night Owl Nation. In 2022, he started Night Owl Nation, a global community of entrepreneurs and creators who practice storytelling together.During our conversation, Sun Yi candidly reflects on his upbringing in Korea and subsequent immigration to the United States at the age of 10, where he endured years of bullying. These experiences shaped his resilience, reinforcing his sense of self while occasionally challenging his capacity for humility.Through the highs and lows of his professional journey, including almost losing his marriage to the love of his life Gigi, Sun Yi arrived at a profound realization: true success hinges upon establishing authentic human connections with customers. He highlights the importance of active listening, genuine care, and a service-oriented approach as the most potent tools in the realm of marketing and branding.Sun Yi's authenticity, humor, and candid anecdotes will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, offering not just marketing and branding insights but also a sense of camaraderie amidst life's ebbs and flows. Why should you care about personal branding and marketing? These tools are key to standing out in a saturated market, allowing you to communicate your unique value and build a loyal following. Focus on authenticity and consistency in your message and content; this genuine approach will resonate more deeply with your audience. Remember, your personal brand is an investment in your professional future—nurture it with intention and strategy. Sun Yi shares his life experiences, lessons, and advice to future leaders. Crafting a personal brand can be daunting and time-consuming, but once established, it opens doors to unparalleled opportunities and professional growth. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes: "A lot of people can't debunk truth until they've reflected on their past." – Sun Yi "Once I stopped looking for my 'why,' my business started to explore, and I realized that everything great happened in my life almost by accident." – Sun Yi "Whatever I do, I do it all the way or I don't do it at all." – Sun Yi "Stop focusing on the content and start focusing on the audience." – Sun Yi Takeaways: Sometimes, it takes moments of physical or mental exhaustion to strip away our ego and see the truth. Invest in developing your critical thinking abilities and communication skills, as they can empower you to navigate diverse situations and relationships effectively. Take the time to explore and understand your 'why,' but don't force it. Sometimes, it becomes apparent naturally as you gain experiences. Patience and persistence are crucial. Avoid constantly shifting directions; instead, stay committed and allow the path to reveal itself over time. Content creation underscores the importance of thorough revision and refinement. Rather than focusing on creating perfect content initially, the significance of continuous rewriting and editing to convey a message effectively. Conclusion: Embrace authenticity, challenge preconceptions, and continually invest in personal growth. Remember that influence is earned by sharing valuable insights and genuinely connecting with others. Stay committed to excellence, be open to opportunities, and don't fear the process of self-discovery, even if it leads to moments of uncertainty. Prioritize your audience's needs and personalize your approach to resonate with a broader audience. By applying these lessons, you can navigate life's challenges with resilience, make a positive impact, and find fulfillment in your journey. https://apogeestrong.comhttps://apogeewoman.com/https://apogeestrongdads.comhttps://apogeestrongfoundation.org

You might already know about the importance of being authentic, but maybe you're not exactly sure how to translate that over social media in order to attract your ideal customers. You don't want to be so authentic and transparent that you don't leave any mystery about you, and you also don't want to share so much that you become uninteresting to listen to. There is definitely an art in owning who you are and what your unique talents are, and conveying that appropriately to your audience so that you stand out while showcasing your expertise. Sun Yi calls this the “goldilocks of personal branding.” Sun Yi is an entrepreneur, storyteller, and TEDx speaker. He is the founder of Night Owls, an award-winning digital agency in NYC. In 2022, he started Night Owl Nation, a community that practices storytelling together. Sun gained over 50k Instagram followers in only 6 months, and in this episode of the 365 Driven Podcast, he reveals his content strategy and the common mistakes he sees people making on social media, and what you should actually be doing instead. So many people think if they post consistently, that will be enough to grow their following, but they are missing a key component. It is called “social media” for a reason. The interactions are meant to be a 2-way street. No one likes when someone just takes without giving anything in return. Instead of “posting and ghosting” think about how you can use your knowledge and abilities to serve with authenticity, and the right clientele will take notice. Key highlights: Sun's content strategy and how he got 50k followers in 6 months Repurposing and recycling content What is a carousel on Instagram? The 3 necessary pieces of great content Why Sun has a consistent theme and colors on his Instagram page Don't “post and ghost” Nuances about social media that Sun didn't realize before The problem with influencer mentality How to land high-caliber clients Where to start if you are new to social media Why really great content might not perform well Common storytelling mistakes The importance of being relatable For resources and links mentioned in this episode, visit: 365driven.com/episode302

My client arrives to rehearse her high-stakes keynote. She's giving this speech in front of thousands upon thousands of people. Before she begins, I say to her, “Today, we're going to start at the end. So go ahead and run through your closing paragraph now.” That throws her off. She responds, “I've memorized my talk in a very specific order. Isn't that going to mess me up?”  Then I ask her how many times she's rehearsed her opening paragraph.  “I don't know, maybe at least 75 times?”  And the closing of her talk?  “Oh. Maybe a handful--five?” Aha! Speakers tend to focus on the opening. They go through it from the beginning, make a mistake before getting to the end, start over, make a mistake again, start over, and over. And over. And over. It's like a pilot focused on getting the takeoff right but not the landing! And it goes on this way for days or weeks. When I explain this to my client, she says, “Kymberlee, I never thought of it that way,” which segues nicely with my special guest today. Sun Yi runs an award-winning digital agency that focuses on helping personal brands tell their story by challenging their thinking. And his actual tagline is “I never thought of it that way.” In this episode, he and I discuss things like: What elevates a story (and how is a narrative different from a story)? How do you know you're being as vulnerable enough in your storytelling (and what's the difference between vulnerability and a sob story)? Where do people using stories for business purposes tend to screw up? And how can you use storytelling in your brand when there's no conflict in your personal story? What you will learn in this episode: How to correctly set up your story for an emotional payoff What mistakes entrepreneurs make when telling personal branding stories How to engage in “micro-storytelling” for social media audiences (and algorithms) Who is Sun? Sun Yi founded Night Owls, an award-winning digital branding agency based in New York City. For over 12 years, he's used his passion for personal branding to help brands go from zero to over a billion dollars in revenue. His company has a well-earned reputation for its expert branding, marketing, and copywriting knowledge, as well as its high-quality website design and client service. Sun built his firm with culture in mind. After starting and quitting so many times, he decided to put community first and create a collaborative environment where he and his employees felt passionate about putting love and care into their work. As a result, Night Owls has attracted household names like Spotify, Columbia University, and the American Red Cross as well as best-selling international speakers and authors like Mel Robbins, Gabby Bernstein, and Jay Shetty as part of their clientele. Sun also loves teaching and creating educational content on Instagram for personal brands. In his spare time, he enjoys motorcycles, listening to audiobooks, watching Youtube videos, and doing yoga. With over 20 years of experience working in digital branding, Sun has helped build growth-stage startups to Global Fortune 500 companies to personal and global brands, improving their combined revenues from virtually zero to over $1 billion. Clients of the firm include household names (Seiko, American Red Cross, Spotify, Swell Bottle). Sun has a passion for personal brands and has worked with bestselling authors as well as world-renowned public speakers and entrepreneurs, such as Jay Shetty, Mel Robbins, Gabby Bernstein. He also loves to teach and create educational content for personal brands on Instagram. In his personal time, Sun enjoys yoga, audiobooks, youtube, and motorcycles. Visit instagram.com/sun.yi to see his content.   Here's what we covered on the episode:   Sun's Journey Through Web Design (1:41) How Sun and I were introduced by our mutual friend Licia Morelli  Sun had an HTML book lying around so he started to practice making websites by using Notepad and Microsoft Paint when he was 19 years old    Making websites started out as a hobby for Sun which led him to get a job at an agency where the art director there taught him everything he knew How Sun was fed up with his job so he decided to quit and at the time one of his coworkers was starting a baby clothing line, so he made a website for her Sun explains that the year after he quit, he made a few websites that he didn't make any money on, and says he went from a $100,000 salary to making no money  The websites Sun made but didn't make any money off of launched people contacting him because they liked them so much, which eventually turned into Night Owls  About 5 years ago, Sun started working with Gabby Bernstein, which is when he fell into the personal branding space and shares that he was working with mostly corporate brands before that  The story of how Sun joined his friend's agency after freelancing for two years and how he learned what not to do in a business there because he realized they were more focused on making a profit than producing a quality product  How Sun ended up leaving the agency 10 years ago and started Night Owls, which was built on the principles that they were going to do everything opposite of the company he just left Why the agency is named Night Owls, and how they didn't have the name until a month into starting the company  The development of Sun's freelancing, which started out with him doing a 9 month project for $1,700 and led him to getting $10,000 for one month of work, which resulted in Dial 7, a big car service company in NY contacting him — from there he kept raising his prices  Sun says that referrals is how they kept getting larger clients like, American Red Cross and Seiko and also says they put their link at the bottom of websites they do which is how most people find them, like Gabby Bernstein   Personal Branding + Storytelling (12:05) One thing Sun has found is that your agency or freelance business will grow faster if you focus on one thing, that's why they stuck with web design for certain industries like health care and nonprofits When Gabby came in, Sun was fascinated by her story and enjoyed working with her which started his interest in personal branding  Why Sun believes personal brands are the future for all brands because consumers trust the people behind brands, which is why he started developing his own personal brand on Instagram On Sun's Instagram he talks a lot about building personal brands and storytelling because he's found that storytelling is the best way to sell whether you're selling yourself or a product  Sun explains one thing he sees people not doing well when it comes to storytelling and personal branding is being truly authentic and explains how some people believe they are being authentic when they are not  Another thing Sun sees people not doing well is simplifying their messages — he explains that people tend to overcomplicate their content and messages when all they need to do is keep it simple  Sun's podcast, Authentic As F*ck that he started with his friend Elizabeth, where they talk about the things they've learned through building personal brands   How Sun doesn't currently have a product he is selling but is working on a course about storytelling for personal brands and how he has been in contact with some course publishers that want him to create a course for them  Night Owls Agency (26:09) Why copywriting is a big part of their service and how Sun had a client who quadrupled their revenue after hiring a copywriter, which sparked him to learn copywriting and eventually he was able to tie storytelling, copywriting and design together Sun explains that Night Owls is his 9-5 job and his personal brand is more of his side hustle, which he will continue to grow  Sun keeps it authentic by sharing his personal story about Night Owls and says that his goal is for his personal brand to eventually be his main job We talk about real stories of how we each started our businesses, and what we wish we would have known when starting out Why charging in 3 payments has worked well for Sun because then there's not as big of gap between cash flow versus doing half up front and half at the end of the project   Sun shares that they are strictly a website agency, where they do copywriting and help with photography/videos if needed but they don't do marketing, Facebook, or branding  Connect with Sun on Instagram  Links mentioned: Night Owls Website   Authentic As F*ck Podcast    Connect with Sun on Instagram      Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. When so many of our home goods and clothing items are made in China, it may be a good idea to step back and understand how those goods actually get to us. In 2012, an Oregon mother, Julie Keith, came face to face with the reality of cheap American consumerism when an SOS letter from China fell out of a box of $5 Halloween decorations. The writer’s name was Sun Yi, an engineer imprisoned in a Chinese labor camp, where he was forced to carve foam headstones and stitch clothing for more than 15 hours a day as part of his “reeducation” by the Chinese government. In Made in China, Amelia Pang follows Sun Yi’s story, as well as those of others like him, tracking down China’s “falsified supply chains,” that start with gulag-like labor camps and end in American homes. Amelia Pang is an award-winning investigative journalist of Uyghur descent. She is an editor at EdTech Magazine. Her book, Made in China, to be released in February 2021, was shortlisted for the 2019 J. Trigger Warning: Contains descriptions of torture and sexual violence. In 2012, an Oregon mother named Julie Keith opened up a package of Halloween decorations. The cheap foam headstones had been five dollars at Kmart, too good a deal to pass up. But when she opened the box, something shocking fell out: an SOS letter, handwritten in broken English.  “Sir: If you occassionally buy this product, please kindly resend this letter to the World Human Right Organization. Thousands people here who are under the persicuton of the Chinese Communist Party Government will thank and remember you forever.” The note’s author, Sun Yi, was a mild-mannered Chinese engineer turned political prisoner, forced into grueling labor for campaigning for the freedom to join a forbidden meditation movement. He was imprisoned alongside petty criminals, civil rights activists, and tens of thousands of others the Chinese government had decided to “reeducate,” carving foam gravestones and stitching clothing for more than fifteen hours a day.In Made in China, investigative journalist Amelia Pang pulls back the curtain on Sun’s story and the stories of others like him, including the persecuted Uyghur minority group whose abuse and exploitation is rapidly gathering steam. What she reveals is a closely guarded network of laogai—forced labor camps—that power the rapid pace of American consumerism. Through extensive interviews and firsthand reportage, Pang shows us the true cost of America’s cheap goods and shares what is ultimately a call to action—urging us to ask more questions and demand more answers from the companies we patronize. Pang is in conversation with fellow author and Skylight's own Agnes Borinsky. _______________________________________________   Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. In this episode, I interview director Leon Lee on his latest documentary, "Letter from Masanjia." In 2012, a story in The Oregonion went viral. A woman named Julie Keith had opened a box of Halloween decorations from KMart and discovered an SOS letter written by Sun Yi, a man imprisoned and tortured in a Chinese labor camp for engaging in the spiritual practice of Falun Gong. Keith publicized the letter, and the international attention eventually led to the abolishment of these labor camps and freed many people in the process. I talk to Lee about Sun Yi's story, how the documentary was made, and the larger issues it raises about the source of cheap goods, the persecution of minorities, and the power of small actions. If I’m being honest, I don’t even know how to introduce today’s episode. Back in the Fall, my husband and I had the opportunity to screen a documentary called Letter from Masanjia, and I’ll get into the details of the documentary, and we’ll be talking about it throughout this episode. But, after I saw that documentary, it affected me in ways I can’t even begin to explain. I knew that I wanted to have the producer of that documentary on this episode, and so I reached out to him, and I asked him to come on the show, and he obliged. Today’s episode is tough. It is engaging, challenging, emotional, it’s raw, but my prayer is that it will impact you. My guest is Leon Lee, the founder of Flying Cloud Productions and producer of the documentary, Letter from Masanjia. BECOMING A SELF-TAUGHT DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER Leon’s first documentary, Human Harvest, was inspired by the accusations of Chinese Organ Harvesting, not too far from his hometown in China. Alongside a team of Canadian researchers, he took 8 years to create the film. It has now been viewed by millions, broadcast in more than 25 countries, and received the 74th Annual Peabody Award for Documentary. THE GLOBAL IMPACT OF LEON’S FILMS While creating the films were not easy, took years of research, and faced much opposition, Leon pressed on for all those affected by the tragedies he was documenting. After the release of his first film, governments around the world began to recognize the serious implications of China’s organ harvesting, even banning certain travelers from traveling to China for organ implantation. LETTER FROM MASANJIA In 2012, an Oregon woman found a cry for help in her K-mart box from a man held prisoner and tortured in Chinese labor camps. Through Leon’s connections, he was able to find the man, Sun Yi, and expose the horrific acts still happening in China today. About Leon Lee, Flying Cloud Productions; Award-winning Canadian filmmaker Leon Lee founded Flying Cloud Productions to share intriguing stories about modern-day China that help shine a light on human rights issues. Their debut film Human Harvest, a documentary about China’s illegal organ trade, was broadcast in over 25 countries and was the recipient of numerous accolades including the illustrious Peabody Award. Their recent feature documentary Letter from Masanjia premiered at Hot Docs 2018 and is currently playing in theatres and scooping awards at festivals worldwide. Their aim is to create an impact by bringing true stories to life in unforgettable ways, sparking vital discussion on topics of international importance. An exciting and eye-opening BEHIND THE LENS as we span the globe exploring cultures and historical events thanks to our special guests, LEON LEE and NAMRATA SINGH GUJRAL, plus our exclusive interview with writer/director AMMA ASANTE. We kick off this episode of #BTLRadioShow with our exclusive interview with writer/director AMMA ASANTE who talks about her latest film, the emotionally powerful WHERE HANDS TOUCH. Set in 1944 Germany, Asante explores an oft-overlooked part of World War II history – the Rhineland Bastards, the name given by the Nazis to those of mixed race. Another part of Hitler's "cleansing", Asante sets the stage and brings us into time and place with a love story between a young girl of mixed parents named Leyna, and Lutz, one of the exuberant Nazi Youth and son of a famed member of the Nazi military regime. Listen as Asante talks about her approach to telling this story from the visual immersion to the emotional resonance, the contemporary relevance of the film today, and shooting at a former concentration camp. Moving from 1944 Germany to present-day China, Peabody Award winner and filmmaker LEON LEE takes us deep into the story of Sun Yi, a man held prisoner in the Masanjia Labor Camp, with his powerhouse documentary, LETTER FROM MASANJIA. Hiding a note inside a Halloween decoration (a headstone, no less) made in the prison for shipment to the United States for sale in a K-Mart store, Sun Yi begged the finder of the note to contact human rights organizations and alert them to the abuse and torture at Masanjia. Luckily for Sun Yi, in 2012 Julie Keith of Oregon opened up the Halloween decorations she had purchased two-years earlier and found the note. Lee, an authority on China, takes us down the rabbit hole and into Sun Yi's experiences and persecution for his involvement with Falun Gong, a spiritual group founded on the moral philosophies of truth, compassion and tolerance. Filmmakers will be amazed to learn of the lengths Lee had to go into order to make this film as he is not allowed to enter China, and Sun Yi, on his release from Masanjia could not leave the country. A fascinating conversation. And then we welcome acclaimed writer/director and President of Uniglobe Entertainment, NAMRATA SINGH GUJRAL, talking about her new film 5 WEDDINGS! A cultural explosion showcasing the beauty and wonders of India set against a fictional story of a magazine journalist seeking the Editor-In-Chief position which will be determined by the quality of this unique assignment, Gujral's enthusiasm about the film is palpable as she talks about its structure, deciding on the weddings to focus upon (there are 15 different types of weddings in India), including the Hijara as an important part of the film, focusing on the relationships of fathers & daughters, true love, tradition, working with her cinematographer Christo Bakalov, casting Bo Derek and Candy Clark, the importance of authentic casting, and advice for filmmakers about finding your target audience. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
