When Adam Coffey finished school, he seriously toyed with the idea of becoming a chef but skip forward a couple of decades and he and his wife Jacynta are instead more interested in producing what goes onto your plate at a grassroots level. Having done a ringer's apprenticeship across various parts of Australia, the high school sweethearts from Tasmania eventually settled in Central Queensland, rejuvenating an old forestry block into a stellar example of regenerative farming practices. In this episode of What's your Beef, Adam outlines what he thinks are the greatest challenges for our beef industry around engagement and education. He also talks about the evolving use of social media to reach outside agricultural echo chambers.

Synopsis:What does it mean to be part of a community without access to your birthing stories? Dr Jacynta Krakouer, a Mineng Noongar social worker and Dr Indigo Willing, a sociologist and adoptee from Vietnam contribute a powerful discussion about the history and politics of out-of-home care and inter-country adoption addressing justice, kinship, and belonging. Jacynta and Indigo bring their lived experience and their community advocacy into dialogue with a critical analysis of the institutions and mindsets that underpin how children are born in the lands now known as Australia. As the destruction of natural resources and the carbon emissions generated from the fossil fuel industry continue to accelerate climate change, we are all at risk of losing our lives and our land with our indigenous and frontline communities at the most vulnerable. Air pollution, temperature and sea level rise are wreaking havoc globally and in Australia, we unfortunately are moving at a poor pace to renewable energy despite being a country rich in natural resources to do so. Today, my guest Jacynta Fa'amau is a Samoan Artivist based in Melbourne, Australia and is the Pacific Region Campaign Specialist with 350.org. She had been a part of the Pacific Climate Warriors network since the 2014 Canoe Blockade in Newcastle, NSW. In 2018 she joined the 350 Australia team as the National Organiser and Lead Trainer, and served as a member of the Council of Elders for the Pacific Climate Warriors Diaspora region. Jacynta and I delve into the damaging industry that is fossil fuels and the sometimes-frustrating inaction of those accountable but also find refuge in the communities and countries who are responding to the fight with inspiring projects of climate resilience and ethical energy solutions. Jacynta also reminds us of the power of storytelling in the fight against climate change and it's never been so critical. I hope you enjoy and find value in today's episode. You can learn more at 350.org Other useful sources Jacynta mentions are Marketforces and you can read about the Pacific's Tokelau Nation that that runs 100% on renewable energy.

In this episode, we feature an episode of Saltgrass that further explains and humanises the movement.  We add a clip of Art Breaker's documentary about the Black Finch Project, for the whole thing here's a link. This episode was recorded and first released in May 2020. This is an updated version with a new intro. The interview remains exactly the same. In this episode we speak with a family of activists and we take a closer look at what is going on with the Adani Coal mine.  A hotly contested mine that is still in construction in Queensland.  Long term residents of Castlemaine Ben and Jacynta have spent a lifetime living with the earth in mind, from building a sustainable house to participating in protests and activism.  Ben travelled on the Adani convoy a couple of years ago, as lead by renowned greens leader and activist, Bob Brown.  Ben is a visual artist and is known locally as something of an agitator, often providing cheeky and provocative takes on the current political issues. Jacynta has studied a masters in social ecology, trained in facilitation and participated in the transition towns movement. At the time of recording Rilka, their daughter, was heavily involved in the activist groups trying to disrupt the Adani coal mine from going ahead.   The reason I have chosen this one to replay right now is that Jacynta has, in the last week, moved from being the proud parent of an activist to taking action herself.   LINKS: The Traditional Owners in the Galillee Basin where the Adani mine is happening and what they have been doing to stop the mine. This week, I catch up with rural mum and first generation farmer Jacynta Coffey. Jacynta is originally from Tassie and not from an ag background, but has since worked on big stations all over the country. Her motherhood journey, much like her professional life, has been full of twists and turns. She suffered two miscarriages in a row, one of which was a twin. If that wasn't hard enough, one of her sons was born premature, with Jacynta in full blown labour during a scary Careflight dash to Darwin, which ended in a mid-air emergency. This is her story.SPONSOR: Balanced Inner Body is run by remedial massage therapist and raindrop technique practitioner Amie Lange.
