In 2014 the Western Sydney Wanderers won the biggest club football competition in Asia with an underdog story out of Hollywood. In the process, they electrified fans and changed the way sport could be consumed in Australia. There was a dark side too, with some supporters clashing with police, the league and their own club officials. This is a unique sporting love story and filmmaker Marc Fennell wants to know why it's not a bigger deal. That's at the centre of his new doco Came From Nowhere, which he's discussing with us today. It's a big year for football in Asia, with a revamped format for the Asian Champions League coming up in September - and the Asian Cup currently underway in Qatar. But geopolitics is never far away, with the war in Gaza casting a long shadow over the event. There's also the issue of human rights concerns.
The curtain came down on the J2 season last Saturday, as Tokyo Verdy met Shimizu S-Pulse in the playoff final. Jon Steele was at the National Stadium to see it, and in part 1 of this week's JTET he tells James Taylor all about it (start to 21:45). After that, James and Jon take a look at Ventforet Kofu's exploits in the Asian Champions League, with their group finely poised heading into the final matchday next week (21:45 to 29:40). There's also time for a quick chat about managerial news (29:40 to 37:15). Then, in J-Talk: Short Corner, Mike Innes rounds up the final day of a thoroughly entertaining J3 season (37:15 to end). Thank you for listening throughout the season, and special thanks to Patreon subscribers for their support of JTET and J-Talk.
The regular J2 season may have ended, but some teams still have games to play: James Taylor and Jon Steele preview the playoff semi-finals and Kofu's Asian Champions League game (start to 15:40), before chatting about some confirmed managerial departures (15:40 to 27:10). We know that Ehime will be in J2 next year, but who will join them? The battle to finish 2nd – or should that be not to finish 2nd? – in J3 is in full flow, and Mike Innes has all the details in J-Talk: Short Corner (27:10 to end). Thank you as ever to all our Patreon subscribers and listeners.
