In today's episode, I will dive into the critical topic of improving maternal health outcomes for black women and the promising programs that are making a difference. Black women often face discrimination and stress during their pregnancies, birth and postpartum, leading to the highest rates of maternal mortality and health complications in the US. However, there is hope on the horizon and Dr. Venice Hayes and Natalie Davis are joining me today to discuss the positive changes that are happening around this topic! Denise is the Senior Director of Research and community engagement at United States of Care and brings over 14 years of public health experience. And Natalie is the CEO and co-founder of United States of care with nearly two decades of shaping American health care policies. I'm so thrilled to share this interview in honor of black maternal health week as a means to help raise awareness and support wider adoptions of these crucial programs and practices. And if you want to keep listening to learn more about the realities of black maternal health, I encourage you to listen to Episode 73 after this one. Dear Mama, What if I told you understanding menopause was a matter of life and death? In her 2022 book You Got Anything Stronger, Gabrielle Union went into deep detail about how in her words, “the surge and retreat of hormones” during perimenopause and menopause caused her to have passive suicidal ideations and pointed out that science has focused on hiding symptoms or treating the symptoms of menopause that have mattered most to men like vaginal dryness. The part of Union's book that made me pause (see what I did there) was when Union stated, “According to a 2020 CDC study, the suicide rate among women is highest for those ages 45-64” and calls out how women's depression is often linked to men or their children, focusing on the external features of women's lives and not the internal. That's when I knew we had to do an episode about Menopause and I knew just who turn to Omisade Burney Scott s creator of the platform Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause which includes a podcast of the same name. Black Mama Creative Week is the perfect time to drop this episode. Burney-Scott is a trailblazer in this field and roots her work in her spirituality producing creative projects such as Messages From the Menopausal Multiverse. In this episode, we talk:

On this week's episode, we are joined by founder of the Black Mom Diaries, Patricia Griggs. Listen in as we unpack Patricia's upbringing, her experiences in the education and healthcare systems, portrayals of Black people in the media, and navigating conversations with her children.Patricia Griggs is a lover of God, a wife, a boy mom, and a girl mom. She received a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Texas and has spent many years hopping from one thing to another in pursuit of her purpose. Throughout her journey, she maintained a passion for helping others. After being out of school for many years, Patricia went back to earn a master's degree in communications from Syracuse University. At the end of her graduate program, she came up with the idea for a podcast. Black Mom Diaries started as a class project and quickly became a passion project for her.She became a first-time mom with several of her friends and felt connected on a surface level. Patricia realized she had lots of questions and thoughts about motherhood - as it relates to black moms - that she didn't feel comfortable sharing with those friends. Black Mom Diaries created a space to share those stories to connect with other black moms, and also encourage, and inspire them. Patricia recently opened an online store that sells swag for black moms and their kids. She is determined to help black moms find their passion and embrace it, in order to change their family legacy. She believes that this is only the beginning, as her goal is to annually impact at least 10,000 black moms nationwide by connecting, educating, encouraging, inspiring, and transforming them through Black Mom Diaries. In her free time, she enjoys family game nights, reading to her kiddos, and watching movies with her husband. Black motherhood has been scrutinized for centuries. Dating as far back as slavery, black women have dealt with stereotypes involving their sexuality and motherhood. The spectrum of stereotypes ranges from hypersexualized and promiscuous women to asexual beings and abusive and neglectful parents. Host, Shaleah discusses the mammy, jezebel, and matriarch stereotypes as well as media cases involving black mothers being jailed and facing harsh punishments for their parenting missteps. After many failed attempts to share my experiences as a Black mom, I stopped trying. Wait! Let me be more clear. I rarely share these stories with white women. After way too many pushbacks, "what-about" questions, and straight-up dismissals, I decided for my own mental health to reserve that part of me for safer spaces. Today I offer you a peek into my world as a Black mom. I'm joined by my friend Barb Roose who also shares a few of her own stories, as we talk to the host, our friend Jill Savage. Glenda Augustine is co-host of the podcast Two Black Moms With a Mic. Along with co-host Lisa Edwards, they discuss the range of experiences of motherhood "...from diapers to diplomas", and beyond! These two have 6 kids between them, and share the ups and downs of successfully raising Black children in today's world. Glenda talks with me about many things: Conscious Parenting, her own early interest in science and how unexpected it was for a Black girl in the 1970's, her experiences throughout school, including college, the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur, and how all of this led to her current interest in helping Black children pursue their interest in science. This week on Parent Tell, Kaila had the absolute joy of talking with Dr. Carline Crevecoeur, a retired OB/GYN who homeschooled her 5 children up until college. Kaila and Carline ended up enjoying multiple topics of conversation during their hour long chat but the primary focus was giving Carline the space to talk about how being a Black mom in America is different from a white mom's experience. From constantly worrying about her sons once they reached driving age, making sure that her children learned more Black history than the standard MLK and Rosa Parks curriculum touted in most public schools, and expressing the fact that Black childhood is often cut short. Kaila and Dr. Crevecoeur have some lighter moments too (like the fact that they both married white men but only one of them has a sense of rhythm), because a hugely necessary and heavy conversation needs some light, which is very much a metaphor for the way life and the world has been for all of us over the last 2 years.Dr. Crevecoeur wrote a book about her experiences homeschooling her children and it can be purchased here, or on Amazon.Dr. Crevecoeur's website can be found hereFor more information about Kaila, episode topics and behind the scenes details, and of course painfully relatable memes follow Parent Tell on InstagramIn the mood to tell about your parenting? Chatting through the kids getting older. It's insane to know the kids are turning one, going to school, eating food, being little humans. How did we get here?!
Kayla Dunn is a proud mother, a proud Christian Black woman, and a proud conservative. But speaking out against the racism & injustice of Critical Race Theory at a school board meeting in Idaho earned her a lot more than national media attention. It also earned her the notoriety of being considered a potential domestic terrorist by the FBI and the stasi-like Biden Justice department. Join AJ Steel as he interviews this gutsy woman & hear about her journey from a hopeless welfare mom, to an assertive conservative woman who become the Idaho State Director for the Power2Parent organization. Hear about her battles against low expectations & lefty school boards. Don't miss her words of caution and guarded hope about the future of our nation.
