Often considered the ur-text of trans-exclusionary feminism, Janice Raymond's “The Transsexual Empire” came out in 1979, but rehearses a bunch of tropes you could just as well get off JK Rowling's Twitter feed. In their conversation with historian Susan Stryker, Moira and Adrian explore the very specific milieu from which Raymond and her book emerged — a radical lesbian feminist theology deeply disappointed with the Catholic Church.

2759 - The Fraud Of "White Feminism" w/ Kyla Schuller

Emma hosts Kyla Schuller, Assistant Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University, to discuss her recent book The Trouble With White Women: A Counterhistory of Feminism, on how mainstream feminism has been a project of theft disguised as liberation. Professor Schuller and Emma situate white feminism as one that isolates a specific element of misogyny while leaning into many forms of structural oppression, from racism to classism to transphobia. The first contrast Kyla Schuller brings to our attention is that between the feminism of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, co-author of the quintessential “History of Women's Suffrage,” with Susan B. Anthony, and that of Frances E.W. Harper, who used the income from her poetry to fund the Underground Railroad and paint women's rights as a movement to promote Black folks' land rights, liberty, and literacy. Despite writing what is viewed as the quintessential “first wave” feminist text, Stanton's and Anthony's feminism was actively based on beliefs that Black suffrage could not take precedence over women, leaving Harper's beliefs entirely out of their project, while appropriating and editing the works of Black women such as Sojourner Truth to fit their own narratives. Using this as a blueprint for the differences between “white” and intersectional feminisms, Schuller then looks to the appropriation of the story of escaped slave Harriet Jacobs by Harriet Beecher Stowe for her work “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” and how this reflected Stowe's feelings of the white woman's role in protecting, teaching, and civilizing women of color, as further represented by her ultimate acquisition of the largest orange plantation in Florida, as a place to experiment with disciplining and civilizing the formerly enslaved. She and Emma also touch on the stories of Margaret Sanger and Dorothy Ferebee as an important contrast in the development of reproductive choice, versus reproductive justice, before touching on the takedown of Sandy Stone from the lesbian music collective “Olivia Records” by anti-Trans activist Janice Raymond. They wrap up the interview by touching on the concept that the universal female experience that TERFs ground their oppression in simply doesn't exist, and look at Sheryl Sandberg's “lean in” feminism versus AOC's coalition feminism. Emma also looks at Biden's decision to break up BBB, hoping to at least get some moderates on board if he's going to lose the faith of the rest of his base. And in the Fun Half: Brandon and Matt join Emma as they take on MLK NFTs but like IRL, exploring the commodification of the Civil Rights Movement, and crypto bros' inability to grapple with artists having the rights over their work. Warren from Toronto calls in to explore Jordan Peterson's brief prevalence in Canadian academia, and how that all fell apart well before his retirement, Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson take on the threat of “NGOs,” (totally different than corporations, they swear), and the crew explores how Jordan Peterson's self-help work targeted people who were looking for meaning in their life, and what the left can learn from it. One key aspect of children's lives and development which many of the teachers we have spoken to for this podcast have mentioned, regardless of who they're teaching and where they are, is the relevance of parental and family engagement in children's education. Their observations mirror the findings of today's guest Sharon Wolf, an applied developmental psychologist interested in how young children's social environments - specifically their families and schools - shape their development.“Parents' involvement really can enhance the children's academic outcomes. Not just how they engage in school, but their positive attitudes and their behaviours, and how they feel about school.” - SharonWe are also joined by teachers in Lebanon and India, and hear in-depth insights from an impactful parental engagement program in Cajon Valley, California. First we hear from Nour, who works in a kindergarten in Lebanon, supporting the special needs of autistic children.“The program that I am working on relies a lot on consistency and without the parents' engagement this is very difficult to do. You cannot be consistent with the work that you are doing if the parents are not engaged.” - NourNext we hear from Janice Raymond, lead of the project Family and Community Engagement (FACE) in Cajon Valley, Southern California. “Regardless of who you visit, other parents in the apartment buildings see you, other kids see you doing visits. All of a sudden everyone wants a home visit. You affect more than just that one family. The relationship is built in the community just by reaching out and making that first step. It is really quite astonishing how that ripple effect works. You don't need to visit every single family to have an effect on every single family.” - JaniceOn today's podcast:Why the pandemic opened parents' eyes to their children's schoolingThe need for teacher-parent supportive relationships Why family engagement in children's schooling is crucialLinks:Email: podcastteachersvoices@gmail.comBold.expertCenter for Universal Education at BrookingsTo find out more about today's guests, and for more episodes featuring other teachers and their stories, visit https://bold.expert/podcasts/bold-podcast-series2

Firstly, in the beginning, one of these fathers actually says, "there are some kids at an early early age you know, maybe were born in the wrong body". We'd like to make this very clear: His comment was left in this recording because unfortunately there are still people that actually believe that statement to be true. We believe this is just one pitfall that keeps holding back the stopping of the medicalization of children and youth. Listeners need to understand the mentality of a large number of people who have fallen into that mindset from a place of not wanting to appear bigoted - not wanting to 'hurt' the emotions of others. But the harsh reality is this: NO HUMAN IS BORN IN THE WRONG BODY. EVER. As was a common theme brought up between these fathers, the internet is mentioned as a primary source of influence on their kids. Although most parents are not aware of it though, their children more likely than not have become exposed to pornographic imagery and messaging because of it. It often is revealed through youtube influencers as was discussed some in this podcast. On average girls by age 12 and boys by age 8 have had this exposure and anime is one of the most common forms of this exposure. Investigative journalist Alix Aharon has been researching this topic and written extensively about it. DESIST, DETOX & DETRANS: Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult by Maria Keffler is an excellent resource NOTE: Can I Get a Witness does not condone any support towards the idea that there is such a thing as 'trans' or 'transgender' so does not endorse any organizations that platform individuals who claim a 'trans' identity. CIGAW has no need to virtue signal a board member or list any names of 'trans allies' in order to get our message across: There is no such thing as a fictional identity of any sort. We believe this is not only contradictory but confuses the populace who is beginning to wake up to this 'gender craze', & they need the truth - not more gaslighting. The time of worrying about being 'nice' has got to be substituted with bravery & consistently holding the line of reality or we just keep enabling kids to slip into this bottomless trap of confusion & pain. We further believe that this desire to cling to this acceptance of a fictional identity is counterproductive towards the ultimate goal of abolishing what Janice Raymond coined SEX ROLE CONTROL CENTERS (pediatric gender clinics), & THAT is our main mission. As journalist Jennifer Bilek has stated, "Ask yourselves, if you had a movement to impress upon young people the harms of drinking and alcoholism, would you invite an alcoholic who was still drinking, and drunk, to speak to young people about the harms of drinking?" Heather Brunskell-Evans is a philosopher and sociologist who studies the intersection of medicine and culture. She joins us today to trace the ways in which queer theory evolved in academia and moved into the broader culture, including the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) in the UK. Explaining how a social justice angle is key to the ‘affirmative model' of care for gender dysphoria, Heather recounts a few key moments when she realized there were authoritarian elements at play in silencing thought and conversation around the topic of transgender, even for parents trying to protect their children. You could not openly talk about women's bodies.  The serperation between sex, biology, and gender was intially very good and had some valid points associated with it.  Throughout the 70s there was a shift in our views on gender and biology, but by the 90s, there was an overcorrection happening. We are seeing the same thing happening today. People are claiming that some women at the end of the bell curve are stronger than men, which means you can not say women on average are less strong than men. Heather shares her thoughts on... In the 40 years since the events at Olivia Records, gender categorization seems to pop up sporadically in the mainstream press, leading to what sociologist Laurel Westbrook calls "gender panics," and then they disappear only to emerge again at some other time. An analysis of gender panics show that people fear some gender nonconformists but seem perfectly fine with others.  It turns out that one thing in particular, just one thing, causes and then quells a gender panic, showing that the public has a very peculiar underlying theory of gender. Meanwhile, the metaphysics of gender is the academic study of what gender is, and who belongs in a particular gender category. In that area, the descendants of the views about gender in the 70s stake their positions today, calling for the inclusion or exclusion of certain transindividuals in sex-segregated spaces. We look at some of these arguments and the contested assumptions that underlie them, and then come back out to the real world to see how trans-inclusive women-only spaces seem to be doing in America. This is part 2 of 2 about the metaphysics of gender. In the 40 years since the events at Olivia Records, gender categorization seems to pop up sporadically in the mainstream press, leading to what sociologists Laurel Westbrook and Kristen Schilt call "gender panics," and then they disappear only to emerge again at some other time. Guest voices include Sandy Stone, Janice Raymond, Laurel Westbrook, Holly Lawford-Smith, and Robin Dembroff.  To get an ad-free feed of this and every other Slate podcast, and bonus content, sign up for SlatePlus by going to slate.com/hiphiplus. It is currently very difficult to get your gender legally changed in the U.K, That might change. In recent months, philosophers have been drafted into making complicated and contentious arguments about what it is to be a man, woman, or any other gender in the service of advancing or blocking the movement for trans-rights and recognition. In particular, it has exposed a conflict between trans-rights advocates and a certain wing of feminism, a conflict that in fact has its roots in America in the 70s. On this episode, we look at the historical origins of this conflict by looking at a single event involving two women in the 70s, one of whom founded the gender-abolitionist wing of feminism, and the other founded transgender studies. That event, and those ideas, help us to understand the stakes and contentiousness today. This is part 1 of 2 on the metaphysics of gender, and in particular, the question of what is a woman?
