Con relación al tema de la amistad, Blanche Zacharie de Baralt, en su obra titulada El Martí que yo conocí, describe con sumo afecto la manera como José Martí trataba no sólo a los amigos sino también a quienes los demás no consideraban dignos de tenerlos como amigos. Tal vez ninguna persona estaba mejor dotada para escribirlo, ya que ella llegó a ser no sólo una gran amiga de Martí sino también la primera mujer graduada en Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de la Habana antes de ser docente en la misma. He aquí su elocuente descripción del prócer conocido como el «Apóstol de la independencia cubana»: «[Martí] poseía en grado sumo el arte de ganar amigos y de conservarlos.... No escatimó... sacrificios... para mantener siempre viva su llama.... Daba, sin tregua, su cariño, su inteligencia, su tiempo, su saber, su bolsa, enjuta con frecuencia [pero] jamás cerrada. Daba hasta dar en supremo holocausto su propia vida. »Ninguno era tan alto y encumbrado que Martí no pudiese llegar a él, ni tan bajo y humilde que no supiera hacerse pequeñito y sencillo para hallar su nivel. Al llegar a una casa... hallaba una palabra amable para cada uno. Recordaba las personas que había visto una sola vez y las llamaba por su nombre; se interesaba en todos; los cautivaba con una sonrisa, con una mirada expresiva. Amaba a los niños, y los chicos tenían encanto con él. »Poseía el arte de escuchar, cosa rara en el que tiene el don de la palabra. »[Martí] sabía agradar haciendo que los demás se sintieran complacidos de sí mismos, y eso con perfecta naturalidad, sin adulación. “No hay quien no tenga algo bueno —decía—; falta saberlo descubrir.” »... En las fiestas de la colonia, Martí solía sacar a las muchachas menos atractivas, las que no tenían compañero, y cuando María Mantilla le preguntó una vez por qué escogía para pasear por el salón o llevar al buffet las menos agraciadas, dijo Martí: “Sí, hijita, porque a [ellas] nadie les hace caso, y es deber de uno no dejarlas sentir su infelicidad”, y salía muy orgulloso con su pobre compañera», concluye Zacharie de Baralt.1 ¡Qué triste que hasta hoy, en las fiestas en pleno siglo veintiuno a las que los jóvenes llevan a su novia o a alguna joven que les interesa sentimental o físicamente, haya tantos que le dan prioridad a la belleza exterior y no a la belleza interior del espíritu! En vez de pensar, como Martí, que «no hay quien no tenga algo bueno» y dedicarse a descubrirlo, cualquiera que sea su físico, cierran esa puerta de oportunidad para conocer a una persona del más alto calibre que bien pudiera ser una excepcional compañera futura y una maravillosa madre para sus hijos. Más vale que cada uno de nosotros determinemos más bien seguir el mismo ejemplo que siguió Martí, el ejemplo de Dios nuestro Creador. They discuss the negotiations leading up the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocol, exploring some of the political tensions that sits behind the provisions of these key legal texts. This includes how the law treats non-state actors and non-international armed conflict, as well who gets the right to wage war. Helen Kinsella is a Professor of Political Science and Law at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the theorization of gender and armed conflict and she is currently working on a book on sleep in war and another on the histories of the laws of war through the United States' wars against Native peoples.  She is the author of The Image before the Weapon (Cornell University Press, 2011), which won the 2012 Sussex International Theory Prize. Helen has a PhD in Political Science and an MA in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and a BA in Political Science and Gender Studies from Bryn Mawr College.Giovanni Mantilla is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University, Fellow of Christ's College, and Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. His research focusses on the operation of multilateralism, particularly practices of social pressure and pressure management in diplomacy, global governance, and international legal processes. La Concejalía de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Rincón de la Victoria junto a la Asociación de Mujeres `Estrella del Alba´ han anunciado el acto de la XXX Exaltación de la Mantilla que correrá a cargo de la cantante y actriz, Charo Reina. Se trata de una conmemoración muy especial “al cumplir la trigésima edición de un evento que tiene como finalidad homenajear a la mantilla como valor cultural y legado de nuestra historia”, señala la concejala de Cultura, Paz Couto (PP). El alcalde de Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado (PP), ha destacado “la importancia de conservar nuestras tradicionales como muestra de nuestra identidad, siendo la exaltación a la mantilla un homenaje a esta prenda femenina por excelencia”. El regidor ha querido agradecer a la asociación “su profunda labor y compromiso social que vienen realizando desde hace más de tres décadas, y fundada por una mujer excepcional como fue Paquita Mellado, conocida como la niña chica”. La presidenta de la Asociación de Mujeres `Estrella del Alba´, Belén Caballero, ha mostrado una vez más su agradecimiento al Ayuntamiento, y ha hecho una especial mención a la trayectoria “de nuestra asociación de mujeres en su compromiso por reivindicar el empoderamiento femenino y la recuperación de las tradiciones populares”. Sobre la pregonera, Caballero ha destacado a Charo Reina, sobrina de Juana Reina, como “una gran artista, a la que le han precedido grandes pregoneras de como Pastora Soler, María José Santiago o Joana Jiménez, y que realizará una exaltación a la prenda de la mantilla que puede llevarse de cualquier color y forma, a excepción del Jueves y Viernes Santo que debe de vestirse de color negro”.
