It's Season Five of The Inklings Variety Hour, episode one, and you know what that means! Time to return to the enchanting land of-- --record scratch-- --Calormen? That's right, Ed Said. We're kicking off this season the right way, with a little trip to an unprepossessing fisherman's hut and the down-on-his-luck literary ancestor of both a refreshing soft drink and Taran the Assistant Pig-keeper. I'm only talking 'bout Shasta. Can you dig? You know who else is talking about Shasta? I mean, besides Bree the talking horse (no not that one) who abducts him? Why, it's Jonathan Geltner, renowned author of Absolute Music, and Joseph Weigel, host of Men with Chests and also an author! Together, we discuss the following subjects: Calormene culture and Narnian culture Literary analogues (or lack thereof) of The Horse and His Boy Formal language and formulaic language The wider world in which Narnia exists Proverbs (Calormene and Narnian) How Tashbaan is awesome Freedom Books we bring up: The Thousand and One Nights Travels in Arabia Deserta David Eddings' Belgariad Series Huck Finn The Prince and the Pauper The Worm Ouroboros The Faerie Queene Copyrighted Music: Original BBC Narnia Theme Mr. Ed theme (not Ed Said) As always, please leave a generous review if you want higher quality or quantity podcasts! This is a labor of love, and I'm currently only able to get something out once every two weeks. See you in two weeks' time, as musician Matt Wheeler joins me to talk (and sing) about his favorite Narnia book.

My friend Kevin recommended C.S. Lewis' book, The Abolition of Man. I read it and was surprised by what I found. This episode is the first of a three part series on this book. We'll cover what Lewis means by "men without chests", Star Trek, Ron DeSantis, and the Taoist conception of the way.Lewis' embrace of Eastern philosophy resonates with my study and desire to merge the best of the East with Western tradition. In the next episode, we'll cover the "trunk" the ultimate source of Truth in the Tree of Life.
In this weeks episode I speak with Sophie Delezio, whose story of survival and resilience has long captured Australian hearts. Now embarking on a new chapter as mother to 10-week-old Frankie, Sophie shares her journey through pregnancy and birth, offering insights into navigating motherhood with a disability while challenging common misconceptions._____ Parenting is a journey full of challenges, especially when it comes to sleep! Thanks to all who have left reviews and feedback! Due to a very busy schedule, I can no longer afford to edit/publish this podcast more than twice a month. This may change if we pick up more listeners, so keep the positive reviews coming and share with your friends! Joseph Weigel, of the Men with Chests podcast, joins Chris to talk about the fight between Ransom and the Un-man in Perelandra. Maybe it's all the gimmicky '80s fight songs we feature in this episode, but Chris is feeling rather combative this podcast. He questions many of Lewis' premises in this portion, sending the two down a number of theological dark alleys. Among other things, we talk about: The realistic awkwardness of this fight Would it have been morally acceptable to kick the Un-man in the unmentionables? What about to shoot him? Is it morally (or theologically) lawful to take the course Ransom does, even in a hypothetical setting? Would it really have been gnostic to refuse to finish off a man who was begging for his life? Why wouldn't the Un-man have had superior strength like the demoniac in Acts? And why not exorcise him? Does it help us to hate the Devil? Is that the same thing as hating evil? And if we're meant to hate something, what does that say about our own origins? Realizing that humans aren't central to creation versus "The Empirical Bogey" Dante's damned and the false appeal to pity "The Rind" and John Askins; is the possibility that everything is meaningless harder to refute than Weston's original philosophy? Awe at the numinous, fear of tigers, loathing of bugs, and hatred of devils The disquieting idea that perhaps the Prelude to Act III of Wagner's Lohengrin would have made a better soundtrack than the many 80's anthems we feature here, including: "Eye of the Tiger," by Survivor "Gonna Fly Now," by Bill Conti "I Have Decided," by Don Potter "The Final Countdown," by Europe "Tonight," from West Side Story "You're the Best Around," by Joe Esposito Apologies for the extra week it took to edit this episode! If you'd like these to come out more frequently, please do leave a review and recommend the podcast to your friends. At this point, I can't justify publishing every week, but if I build up listenership, this will become more feasible. Until then, look for this podcast to come out every two weeks for the foreseeable future! We have plenty more podcasts in store for you.
If you like this podcast, please give it a five-star review on iTunes and share it with your friends. If you have questions, comments, or advice, email Chris at inklingsvarietyhour@gmail.com If you want, feel free to follow us on Instagram: @inklingsvarietyhour Charlie Carter from the Thinklings podcast and Joseph Weigel from Men with Chests rejoin Chris to talk about Perelandra, Chapters 8-11 (or thereabouts). Among other things, we discuss The nature of deception The division between dark and light in Perelandra The ever-present Center Diabolical psychology (or lack thereof) The rind and the core How Perelandra's vivid beauty reinforces the stakes of the dialogue Where, exactly, did Weston get his pack...it looks suspiciously like Ransom's, Precious, yes it does.... How did Lewis interpret Genesis 1? (we don't really have enough time to discuss this fully, but we take a stab at it) Next week: The fight.
I hope you enjoy this, the first of a few (I think about five) episodes on Perelandra, commonly considered the best of Lewis' Ransom Trilogy books. It's late, so I won't say much here, except: Joseph Weigel, of the Men with Chests podcast is my guest. He's great, and his podcast is well worth checking out. Share, rate, and follow this podcast if you like what you hear. Instagram is @inklingsvarietyhour. Email is inklingsvarietyhour@gmail.com. That's all for now! I may be back next week, but it may be in two weeks. Summer has been unexpectedly busy. Charlie Carter will be joining Joseph and me for Part 2 of Perelandra!

Sarah Thornton had never thought much about her breasts. But after undergoing a double mastectomy, the sociologist found herself thinking deeply about what she'd lost as a woman – and the complicated relationship our society has with breasts. Thornton's experience inspired her to speak with scores of people, from plastic surgeons, to bra designers and milk bankers. She joins Piya Chattopadhyay to share what she learned from them about the power and politics of breasts, as explored in her book Tits Up.
This is a conversation about the men we want but can't seem to find. Courageous, competent, and filled with conviction. Is God's man an outlaw in a world that objects to him, an endangered species in a world that can't seem to produce him, or is he merely waiting to be called up to engage a world that desperately needs him? Welcome to "The Wanted Man". This episode will tackle the masculine crisis which is twofold. Where have all the men gone? Why are all the men not acting like men? More than stereotype, this episode seeks to ask what are men for and what lies in our culture and history have turned men into something less. What is a real man? What is true biblical masculinity? Join us for the conversation.

"And all the time—such is the tragi-comedy of our situation—we continue to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. You can hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our civilization needs is more 'drive', or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or 'creativity'. In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful."

Book Club #86 - The Bone Chests - Rich talks to bio-archaeologist and broadcaster Cat Jarman about her terrific book, The Bone Chests about the remains of a surprisingly number of medieval kings (and a queen) whose remains are in Winchester Cathedral. Why aren't the people of Winchester making more of this, like the king-stealing thieves of Leicester? What happened to King Alfred and why did he choose to build a palace at Richard's school? Why were the women of the period written out of history? What happened to the bones of those killed in major battles? Why are the things we know about kings of this period nearly all made up? Why did the early kings have such complicated names and not just call themselves something like Cnut which is easy to remember and why didn't they think of historians who would be doing audio books and come up with monikers that would be easier to pronounce.Buy Cat's book here (for example) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bone-Chests-Cat-Jarman/dp/0008447322/Come and see RHLSTP on tour http://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. In today's episode, Julie shares her journey and all the beautiful lessons she's learnt along the way. At once ambivalent about motherhood, her first pregnancy ended in miscarriage and proved that she did have a yearning to have a baby. Two failed rounds of IVF followed and then she fell pregnant naturally at 42. The NIPT results showed high risk of Down Syndrome and Julie was advised to terminate the pregnancy. Together with her partner Tom, they opted to continue with the pregnancy and welcomed baby Woody via emergency caesarean. Only fifteen months later she birthed baby Alfie. Julie talks at length about mothering a child with Down Syndrome, the dreaded daycare germs, physical therapy and the precious bond between her two boys. In 1642, a Parliamentarian army smashed up Winchester Cathedral, including ten beautiful, 7th century mortuary chests, that housed the mortal remains of West Saxon kings, saints and bishops. In 2014, a team of forensic archaeologists, using the latest scientific methods, attempted to identify the contents, finding an elaborate jumble of bones, and making some surprising discoveries. In this episode, Matt Lewis catches up with Gone Medieval's former co-host Dr. Cat Jarman to talk about her new book The Bone Chests, which untangles the stories of the people within the desecrated tombs. This episode was edited by Joseph Knight and produced by Rob Weinberg.Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world renowned historians including Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more. Held in Winchester Cathedral are several ornate chests, said to contain the venerated bones of early kings of Wessex and England, dating from the seventh to the 12th centuries. But what can these boxes reveal about attitudes to death and the politics in the Anglo-Saxon period? Cat Jarman explains all to David Musgrove. In this mini-series on virtue, I think it important to consider the miry bog we find ourselves in.
