How can you take a business from your garage to Shark Tank and have your idea become a global phenomenon? This episode features an inspiring entrepreneur, Joe Altieri, founder and CEO of FlexScreen, an innovative window screen company. Joe shares how pivotal relationships with his wife, business partners Andy and Craig, and others have transformed his life and business journey.   Joe Altieri is a serial entrepreneur - born with both an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit; he has spent his life believing there's always a better (and more fun) way to do just about everything. Eventually, that innate curiosity and drive for a better mousetrap led him to invent the world's first and only flexible window screen - which landed me on Shark Tank - which resulted in a deal with Lori Greiner (the Queen of QVC) - which catapulted his business in some pretty unbelievable ways.     Key Highlights:   [00:01 - 14:51] Joe Altieri's Journey Taking FlexScreen to Shark Tank   Kevin welcomes Joe Alteri, founder of the innovative window screen company FlexScreen Reinvented frustrating standard metal window screens by creating flexible screens Now a leading global window screen company, recently on Shark Tank   [14:52 - 26:53] The Evolution of FlexScreen through Key Relationships   Early mentor Andy told Joe not to sell the business and invested Partners like Craig came on board to turbocharge company growth The importance of complementary strengths and fully trust each other as business partners Entrepreneurs must guard key personal relationships   [26:54 - 30:35] Family Always Comes First   Treat your business as a child, not a mistress Joe's most important relationship is with his supportive wife Achieve balance in your to spend time with family     [30:36 - 34:42] Closing Segment   Connect with Joe through his podcast Dare To Be Different and website https://www.joealtieri.com!   Key Quotes:   "If your spouse is not on board, there are two things you need to consider. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the President of FlexScreen, Joe Altieri. Joe highlights that FlexScreen is the market's first and only flexible window screen. Unlike traditional aluminum screens that are difficult to handle and easily damaged, Flex Screen is easy to install and incredibly durable. It can even withstand being run over by a car! The idea for FlexScreen started as a hobby in Joe's garage about ten to twelve years ago. Being in the window and door industry, Joe saw a need for a better solution and took it upon himself to create it. Joe discussed how FlexScreen has scaled their business and protected their intellectual property. They purchased a digital marketing company to help spread the word about their product and have changed their business model to rely on licensing their technology to window manufacturers. This allows them to scale without the pain and capital investment of opening new manufacturing locations. Joe emphasized the importance of having the right attorney to protect their patents and ensure non-compete agreements are in place with licensees. He acknowledges the concern of cheap knockoffs and mentions the need to protect their intellectual property actively, even if it means going to court. Joe also talked about the importance of educating window manufacturers on how to sell their products as a differentiator in the market. Key Points from the Episode: Description of FlexScreen as a flexible window screen that is easy to install and durable Comparison of FlexScreen to traditional aluminum screens Explanation of why aluminum screens are still used despite their drawbacks Origin of the idea for FlexScreen and its development in Joe's garage Discussion of how FlexScreen has scaled their business and protected their intellectual property Importance of having the right attorney to protect patents and ensure non-compete agreements Need to actively protect intellectual property, even through legal action if necessary Importance of educating window manufacturers on selling FlexScreen as a differentiator Encouragement for entrepreneurs to seek education and support in entrepreneurship About Joe Altieri: Joe Altieri's journey began as an independent window industry salesman, where he notably excelled in selling window screens. His ability to persuade manufacturers to outsource screens led to annual sales exceeding three million dollars. Frustrated by the flaws in traditional window screens, Joe took on the challenge of innovating the century-old technology. His breakthrough came with a flexible frame design using spring steel, solving the issue of fragile aluminum frames. He further improved the product by bonding mesh with PVC for durability. Joe was invited to present his flexible window screen to the Sharks, and he appeared in Season 11, Episode 10 to a national television audience of 30+ million. About FlexScreen: Founded by Inventor & CEO Joe Altieri in 2013, FlexScreen introduced the pioneering concept of the "world's first flexible window screen." Developed to address long-standing issues with traditional aluminum screens, FlexScreen revolutionized the window industry. After obtaining multiple patents, the product entered the market, initially targeting window manufacturers and dealers. However, due to industry hesitance, Joe shifted his focus and engaged in direct consumer sales through a strategic digital marketing campaign. The brand's rapid growth and innovative design captured the interest of ABC's Shark Tank, further propelling its...

This week we are joined by Joe Altieri, the creator of FlexScreen, a cutting-edge invention that Joe took to Shark Tank and he ended up getting a deal with Lori Greiner. The company is now five years old and it is a multi-million dollar brand. Joe actually started his journey as an independent sales rep in the window and door industry. And he found that the window screens he was selling had been unchanged since the early 1900s and customers continuously complained to him about the product.  He decided to go into his garage and try to come up with a solution, just as a hobby. He wanted to come up with a screen that wouldn't get damaged as easily, something that was easier to take in and out, and something with new technology and he came up with a prototype. He brought the prototype to some people in his industry and they thought it was great, so he got in touch with a patent attorney, got some investors together, opened up a manufacturing plant and the rest is history.  Joe believes that every entrepreneur needs to be in the content creator business first. When he first started the business he and a young guy he had hired would spend three hours filming content--funny, crazy, catchy stuff--with an iPhone in front of a pipe and black drapes in order to sell their product. It was easy, it was basic--but it was effective.  He says the key is being vulnerable and getting your message out there, even if you don't have top-end technology and resources.  As Joe shares, “I was also willing to be vulnerable. That's another thing that a lot of people that I've talked to, they're just not willing to do that. You know, putting yourself out there be a little bit silly, or not be silly, whatever your personality is, let people get to know you and not try to put some sort of face out there that is hard to keep up through the months, the years, you know, that type of thing. I mean, now people don't want to buy off of a company, they want to buy off of a person, a brand, you know, they want to understand who you are as a company, not just your product.” Tune in to hear what it was like to go in front of the famous Sharks, Joe's advice to entrepreneurs on how to best pitch your product to investors, how he has created a successful brand, what Joe's greatest joy in life is, and much more.
