Bursting onto the sceneAt 14 he was playing at Twickenham for England juniors, at 16 he was making his Argyle debut and at 44 he is still turning out on a Saturday for Plymouth True Blues.Lee Phillips packed a lot into a relatively short time at Argyle. He was thrust into the limelight as a teenager, becoming the youngest player to play for the club in 1996. A quick and powerful striker, it was clear to see why he was so quick to make an impression. He had to wait for his first goal, that came two years later, in one of the most famous matches of lower league football. Most people will have heard the story of goalkeeper Jimmy Glass saving Carlisle United in the final minute of the season. But not so many will be able to tell you that it was against Plymouth Argyle and the Pilgrims' scorer that day was 18-year-old Lee Phillips. A good quiz question answer. After leaving Argyle Lee became a fans' favourite at both Exeter City and Torquay United and was, unfortunately, a three-time play-off final runner up.This is the story of Lee Phillips.
Can Marx help us navigate the climate crisis, or is de-growth socialism the answer? Join us for an in-depth discussion with Lee Phillips and Matt Huber as we unravel Kohei Saito's controversial interpretations of Marx's writings on natural limits and the metabolic rift which they began this piece for Jacobin. We challenge Saito's redefinitions of crisis theory and dissect whether Marx truly advocated for de-growth, or simply acknowledged environmental concerns within his broader economic theories. This episode promises to illuminate the oft-overlooked complexities of Marx's environmental views and their relevance today. The episode deeply delves into the shifting class composition within the left, from the industrial labor strongholds of the 60s and 70s to the rise of middle-class intellectuals and knowledge workers in contemporary discourse. We analyze how this shift has allowed radical, yet impractical ideas to gain traction, and emphasize the need for a more inclusive and representative left. Our discussion highlights the practical insights of industrial labor, particularly in the context of decarbonization and environmental sustainability, offering a grounded perspective on these pressing issues. We don't stop there. Our conversation also explores the intricate relationship between technology, social labor, and capitalism, critiquing extreme environmental proposals and advocating for the repurposing of existing technologies for a fairer, sustainable future. We delve into the controversial interpretations of Marx by figures like Negri and Saito, and debate the practicality of radical socialist solutions for climate change. Tune in for a thought-provoking episode that challenges conventional wisdom, from prison abolition to viable climate solutions, and promises to provide a historically informed approach to eco-socialism and environmentalism. Lee Phillips is a firefighter, athlete, model and fitness professional who has appeared on the cover of the iconic and best-selling men's magazine ‘Men's Health a record 22 times internationally. Health, fitness and sports are a massive part of his life and he combines these with working as a firefighter and model. After joining the fire service Lee began competing in firefighter fitness competitions and is the current holder of the title ‘London's Fittest Firefighter' and is also a double World Champion winning gold in both ‘The Ultimate Firefighter' and CrossFit competitions at the World Police and Firefighter Games. Listen in to find out exactly what it takes in this enjoyable episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fitness When I first started it was about consistency and routine and then it becomes part of your lifestyle because it's what you are used to and enjoy doing. I'm in shape all of the time, I hold my physique throughout the year. I've always mixed cardio and weights to achieve the results I've wanted. In rugby, there is respect for those you are playing with and it is an important part of the culture. Rugby and sports help develop skills and communication with others and I've always enjoyed team sports. I like to set myself challenges which is why I compete in competitions. It's vital to set goals and have a vision for the future. Otherwise, how do you know where you are going. Unless you've got something to train for it can be difficult to be motivated in training. Firefighter I didn't know what I wanted to do – but all my friends were going to university so I just picked something to get there and then went on to join the fire service in London because that's where I wanted to be. There is a great variety of levels of fitness across firefighters. You need to be fit because you can find yourself in a position where you may need to carry your partner out of a situation. As a firefighter being in stressful situations means you need to use the services available following challenging calls to look after your mental well-being. If I had to choose between modelling and fighting it would be firefighting because every day is different and you have the opportunity to make a difference. Modelling Andi Peters has become a friend as well as my manager. He has lots of different businesses including the sports model agency that I'm a part of. I do eat foods that are not good for me occasionally, it would unrealistic to say you would never eat anything you shouldn't, the important thing is that it's only occasionally. I'm a brand ambassador for several different companies as I like to keep busy I am currently very involved in Turf Games - a functional fitness competition similar to CrossFit but is more accessible. You take part as a team and it's all about the tactics used as a team to complete the set workouts throughout the competition. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel fitter now than I ever have – age is definitely just a number' ‘I'm always trying to develop myself and learn new things' ‘Enjoy the moment but always have goals that you are looking forward to' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sully Study Podcast Lee Phillips Instagram ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. Chronic Illness and Sex My guest is here to talk about chronic illness and how it relates to sex. Originally, there wasn't a lot of information or resources on the subject, so to fulfill this pressing need, Dr. Lee Phillips made it a point to devote his time towards researching and alleviating some of the sexuality stressors of chronic illness. Lee has worked for more than 12 years as a psychotherapist; he is a licensed social worker, an educator, a sex therapist, and a prolific researcher in the sexuality realm. He brings a lot of experience and wisdom to this episode. Check it out! The Inspiration for his Book on Chronic Pain Lee says that he started a chronic pain management group through his work as a geriatric psychotherapist in Williamsburg, Virginia. This would lead to the inspiration for his subsequent work in understanding and mitigating the detrimental sexual effects of chronic illness. Shortly after, he was approached by a colleague and persuaded to get into sex therapy because of the impacts of chronic pain on sex and relationships. He knew he could do some good work in that facet of therapy. He also says that he was inspired to take his own research further because there wasn't a lot of information out there on the topic of chronic illness and pain, and how it relates to sexuality. The Various Emotions That Can Accompany Chronic Illness in a Relationship Lee says that some couples go through ‘crisis mode' whenever a partner is diagnosed, but overall the emotions and dynamics vary from person to person. He says that it's typically a dynamic consisting of one ‘ill' partner and the other healthy. Occasionally relationships can “open up” as the ill partner doesn't feel adequate enough to pleasure their partner. But even more frequently, the healthy partner teams up and doesn't act adversarial towards the illness, but instead looks for a way to manage it together. And sometimes there's actually relief after diagnosis because it brings context to an otherwise mysterious ailment that hadn't been understood. The Mental Aspects of Chronic Illness Lee says that the physical symptoms can be extreme for chronic illness, but they can also lead to severe mental health difficulties that should not be overlooked. A big part of his job is to try and alleviate the mental turmoil that can arise in dealing with an illness. When considering getting back into as healthy of a sex life as possible, he likes to take into account their sexual history and see what can be done about getting back to the same level of frequency and intimacy. This can be a good boost for overall mental health in a patient. Imago Dialogue for More Reconnection Between Partners He says he uses Imago dialogue therapy for his couples. One of the core principles of Imago is that we unconsciously pick partners based on the qualities of our caretakers through life. So, if there's a lot of isolation, anger, fighting, or depression within a chronic illness relationship dynamic, he will use the Imago model as exercises to break through some of those issues. He says there is a sender and there is a receiver within this model. The basis of the practice is to have couples actively listen and repeat what is sent from the sender back to them. This builds the necessary rapport and reassures both partners that what they're saying is being internalized and understood. The Importance of Seeing a Sex Therapist Lee encourages couples to see a sex therapist and make active strides for sexual reconnection. In addition, a sex therapist can help a couple figure out alternatives to the traditional way they've had sex. Because, after all, sex is so much more than just penetrative sex. There's a whole spectrum, and a sex therapist can help illuminate this crucial aspect of sexuality to those suffering from chronic pain. This can be a good boost for overall mental health in a patient. Imago Dialogue for More Reconnection Between Partners He says he uses Imago dialogue therapy for his couples. One of the core principles of Imago is that we unconsciously pick partners based on the qualities of our caretakers through life. So, if there’s a lot of isolation, anger, fighting, or depression within a chronic illness relationship dynamic, he will use the Imago model as exercises to break through some of those issues. He says there is a sender and there is a receiver within this model. The basis of the practice is to have couples actively listen and repeat what is sent from the sender back to them. This builds the necessary rapport and reassures both partners that what they’re saying is being internalized and understood. The Importance of Seeing a Sex Therapist Lee encourages couples to see a sex therapist and make active strides for sexual reconnection. In addition, a sex therapist can help a couple figure out alternatives to the traditional way they’ve had sex. Because, after all, sex is so much more than just penetrative sex. There’s a whole spectrum, and a sex therapist can help illuminate this crucial aspect of sexuality to those suffering from chronic pain. Chronic Illness and Sex My guest is here to talk about chronic illness and how it relates to sex. Originally, there wasn’t a lot of information or resources on the subject, so to fulfill this pressing need, Dr. He also says that he was inspired to take his own research further because there wasn’t a lot of information out there on the topic of chronic illness and pain, and how it relates to sexuality. The Various Emotions That Can Accompany Chronic Illness in a Relationship Lee says that some couples go through ‘crisis mode’ whenever a partner is diagnosed, but overall the emotions and dynamics vary from person to person. He says that it’s typically a dynamic consisting of one ‘ill’ partner and the other healthy. Occasionally relationships can “open up” as the ill partner doesn’t feel adequate enough to pleasure their partner. But even more frequently, the healthy partner teams up and doesn’t act adversarial towards the illness, but instead looks for a way to manage it together. And sometimes there’s actually relief after diagnosis because it brings context to an otherwise mysterious ailment that hadn’t been understood. What You Will Learn: In the first half of the episode, Ted speaks with Bob Schumacher of Macon, Georgia, who is a student of Ted Thomas's tax auction system. Bob has been investing in tax deeds for around twenty years, in addition to his career in forestry services. Bob discusses transitioning from forestry to consulting, and he shares how tax auctions are a great side business to supplement his consulting. He shares stories of some of his most profitable deals, including one he purchased from other investors who had purchased vacant land at an auction. Bob shares how the property owner did not end up redeeming, and he shares how he ultimately sold the property for a profit of $59,000. He also shares a story of a strange situation where he purchased a lot that he discovered had a small cemetery on the property. He highlights some of the unexpected problems that can pop up with a property, including invasive plant species that can take over an entire property. He shares some of the innovative strategies he uses to attract attention to properties he has purchased and more easily sell them, and he talks about filtering the immense amount of history and information on a property and only looking at the details that matter to the property's value. He shares how counties often offer a tool to allow property owners to pay online, and he shares how investors can use that same tool to determine if a tax-delinquent property has been paid current, rather than wasting time on the property. In the last half of the episode, Ted speaks with his special guest, Lee Phillips. Lee is an attorney and highly regarded expert in the field of asset protection. In this segment, you will learn: Why the biggest threat to your assets comes from the IRS, and why 56% of all bankruptcies in the United States are due to someone in the family getting sick Why asset protection is a vital consideration for anyone, even if they're doing everything right in their business How a friend of Lee's is being charged with murder and losing his business, all because he didn't set his business up as an LLC Why illness can be a devastating experience for families, and how key legal protections like durable power of attorney documents can help protect yours Why taxes are really just compound interest in reverse, and why controlling your taxes is the key to maintaining your wealth Which two key primary tax shelters are available, and how even Donald Trump has used tax shelters to protect his assets from taxes Why Lee got involved in asset protection after he became sick and he and his family lost everything to the legal system Resources from Lee Phillips: Website: https://legalees.com

Larry Harbolt is a nationally recognized speaker on real estate investing with over 35 years in the business and made famous for his niche topics of Land Trusts and Seller Financing. Larry hosts the largest and longest running Real Estate Investors Association meetings in the Southeast US. A land trust is a critically needed tool to maintain privacy in your real estate transactions. Larry Harbolt has an upcoming course on the subject of land trusts that teaches investors to properly utilize the land trust as a tool in your investor’s toolbox . This is a three day course that includes a full day with Lee Phillips, nationally known real estate attorney that specializes in trusts and asset protection. More details on the event can be found at CashFlowGuys.com/LandTrust During the second portion of the show Tyler and Larry discuss seller financing strategies and the “kitchen table” conversations that Larry is famous for. Larry discusses The Dodd-Frank Law and its impact on the industry regarding this recent legislation. The new law applies to specific limitations as to how many owner occupied transactions a seller can finance. The law provides for certain allowance for “damages” to a buyer who disputes the transactions up to and including a refund of monies paid. Larry has published an e-book on the subject to help investors stay compliant with the Dodd-Frank Law. This book can be obtained at CashFlowGuys.com/DoddFrank Tyler Sheff discusses on the importance of taking your time in doing one deal at a time, and being focused on quality not quantity. When a property is purchased “correctly” the tenants pay for 100% of the investor’s ownership expenses. What’s critical is to realize that Real Estate Investing is NOT a get rich quick scenario. Wealth is built over time, by buying and holding smart. Larry also discusses Seller Financing strategies and the philosophy behind many of his strategies. He teaches a 4 day seller financing bootcamp to help investors master the art of working with seller financing techniques to create win / win solutions for homeowners and investors. More info on his program can be found at CashFlowGuys.com/SellerCarry We look forward to having Larry Harbolt as a regular guest on our show, Larry even extends an invitation for any student of his to give him a call directly and will help you through difficult questions and deal structure. Larry can be reached at 727-420-4810 from noon to 5pm Monday through Friday. This week Chatting With Sherri will chat with author Lee Phillips about her book Child Of The Land! Lee Phillips couldn't ignore a headline in the South China Morning Post that read "Children Condemned to Die". Much to her horror, the article detailed the conditions of Chinese orphanages where abandoned children often ended up in "dying rooms." For Phillips, it was a call to action. She ventured to the Chinese city of Zhaoqing, where she climbed the stairs of a prison-like, cement building. On the fourth floor, she entered a world unlike any other. The orphanage smelled of urine and feces. The eyes of the abandoned children haunted Phillips.
