My wife Blake and I create content in pretty much every form you can think of. A lot of people have asked us how we are able to make so much content. The truth is that we don't really create new content every time. Do you want to know the secret? We take one piece of content— and we find a way to chop it up, dissect it, repurpose it into many different ways— and then share that content across different platforms and channels. Dwayne @therock Johnson said: “Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” This mentality is reflected in every conversation or relationship I have ever had with a successful person and this is especially true for entrepreneurs. I bring you these three upselling tips because I've been personally doing this over the last six months and they have been great not just at boosting my income potential, but also in bringing value to my customers. If you're an entrepreneur looking for smart ways to sustain your business, increase your profits and bring customers more in-depth into the sales flow, upselling is a discipline you need to master. Upselling can be challenging, but you can successfully do it when you: Clearly identify the additional products you can sell on top of your core product. Build your brand and create a perception of value. Communicate more effectively what you're selling and how much you're selling it for. The most crucial aspect of upselling is listening intently to your customer's needs and shaping an innovative solution out of that. In the end, it's really not just about you increasing your top-line revenue, but it's also about making your customers feel good by enhancing their buying experience. When Tara Clark decided to create a monetized Instagram account in 2016, very few people were doing it or even thought it was possible. Tara saw the potential to use her professional experience in social media and build a brand centered around motherhood. She took the brave step, and today Modern Mom Probs has more than 750,000 Instagram followers to go along with Tara's successful blog, book, and clothing subscription service. Social media is a powerful tool for creating and growing a brand. But Tara warns that there's more to it than just posting nice pictures and witty captions—content creation involves countless hours of planning, editing, coordinating outside help, working with brands, building a community, and more. At the heart of growing social media presence is community. Tara says it's called social media for a reason because it allows people to connect with and engage with others. When Tara started her social media brand five years ago, she found a group of other entrepreneurs who supported and shared each other's content. That community gave her the tools and insights to grow her brand and helped her find more success than she would have on her own. Tara acknowledges that there is a certain amount of luck to social media, especially when a post goes viral and brings in tons of new followers. But her best advice is to engage with people by having fresh content that resonates with them. When people see content they can connect with and that is valuable to them, it brings them together and builds a strong community they want to share with others. Tara's account started as a place to share jokes and memes about motherhood but has expanded to also include inspirational and educational mom-related content. Offering a wider variety of content and expanding into video has helped her brand grow. Creative content that stands out can catch people's eye. Tara also recommends putting your content everywhere. Repurposing content by putting the same image or caption in your newsletter, blog, Instagram page, etc., maximizes your work and effort while also ensuring the content is seen by more people and can have a greater impact without a higher cost. There's no better place for full-time influencers or entrepreneurs looking to build their brand than social media. Growing your social media presence doesn't happen overnight, but with consistent effort and community-building, you can see strong results over time. It's a common struggle for entrepreneurs—working hard to build their dream company but then giving up some control as the business grows and changes. That was the case for Drybar founder Alli Webb, who grew her company from a mobile blowout business to nearly 100 salons and a product line worth $255 million. Alli started what would become Drybar when she realized there wasn't a great option for women who wanted a really nice blowout without a really high price tag. To recreate the amazing feeling women get when walking out of the salon, Alli launched a mobile blowout company and serviced customers in their homes. As demand grew, Alli opened her first storefront salon. With excellent service, a relaxing environment for pampering customers, and flat pricing for all types of hair, Drybar quickly took off. As the company grew, Alli faced the common struggle of how much to control. Alli says there is often a negative slant to controlling entrepreneurs, but some of her best and proudest decisions came out of that need for control. All Drybar locations have the same mirrors, décor, tools, and blowdryers to create a cohesive experience that customers know will be amazing no matter what location they visit or what stylist they see. That decision could be seen as controlling, but Alli views it as being intentional about how she wanted the shop to look and feel. Alli had a solid vision for the salon experience and wanted to take the lead. Where she learned to give up control was in areas that weren't her strength, including things like payroll and finances. Alli realized that by giving up control in the areas that weren't her strengths, she could pass the responsibility to someone with a better understanding of what the business needed. The control shift continued as Drybar grew and Alli hired more leaders and delegated responsibilities. Alli says that once she was able to cede control of things outside her wheelhouse, the business was able to grow in a healthy way. Alli's advice to entrepreneurs struggling to give up control is to know and understand your best use and the best use of the people around you. When entrepreneurs can decipher the decisions they have the strengths to make and those where they don't add value, they can focus their control and efforts on their strengths. Knowing when and how to give up control can be a big challenge for entrepreneurs. But as Alli shows, taking a step back in certain areas can help a business reach great new heights. Are you afraid of making mistakes? As an entrepreneur for many years, I've learned that it's okay to make mistakes— you don't have to wear yourself out to be perfect. There is no such thing as a mistake, only learning moments. Along the way, you're going to go through inevitable failures. And just like anything in life, you just move forward— you don't stop. A mistake is just a mental reframing of things. So instead of thinking about the mistake, think about what you've learned — and how you apply what you learned so you could rise above and be better. Sarah Smith and her husband Kevin love camping, but they didn't love finding a place to camp. Sarah wanted Yelp for camping with reviews and photos, and when she realized nothing like that existed, she created it herself. Sarah launched The Dyrt in 2013, and today it is one of the most popular camping apps and active online communities. The hallmark of The Dyrt is its active community of campers across the country who provide candid photos and reviews about all types of campsites. Sarah recalls one of the most exciting early days of the business when she received her first submission from a stranger—not a friend or family member—and knew The Dyrt was going to take off. To build and maintain the active community, Sarah follows the 1/9/90 rule. Essentially, 1% of users will provide content, such as videos, photos, and reviews. Another 9% of users will upvote or share the content, and the remaining 90% of users will just consume the content. Sarah made an early decision to focus on engaging the 1% of active users. Without strong user-generated content, The Dyrt would simply be a directory of campsites instead of an interactive review platform. Gamification plays a huge role in creating active users. Every submission or review earns users points on a leaderboard. If a user reviews a campground in Wyoming, they earn points for various components of their review and can watch themselves climb the leaderboard. At the end of every month, the top reviewer in each state wins a prize from one of The Dyrt's brand partners. Points also earn users titles like Legend or Ranger, which are proudly displayed on users' social media profiles. Users at certain levels are also invited to a private forum to test and provide feedback on new features of The Dyrt. Consistent, valuable, and authentic content has built user trust with The Dyrt. Users regularly share updates and make corrections to campground reviews to ensure the information is correct and updated. That trust allowed Sarah to release a premium, paid Dyrt Pro membership that offers additional features, including road trip planning, offline capabilities, and map layers. At the height of the pandemic, someone was coming to The Dyrt every second and signing up for Dyrt Pro every two minutes. By engaging the most active users and gamifying the experience, Sarah grew The Dyrt into the ultimate camping community where users are eager to share information and help other users get outdoors. One of the hardest questions for entrepreneurs is knowing when to go all in. How do you know you are ready to go headfirst into the business? For Kelley Higney, founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing, the realization came when she had customers tracking her down in the parking lot after she sold her product at her daughter's bake sales. With amazing customer feedback, Kelley realized she was onto something, sold her house, and invested that money into her first big batch of inventory. Kelley says it was terrifying, especially with a young family. Before she could go all in on Bug Bite Thing, she created a nest egg as a backup plan. She also did extensive proof of concept testing by selling her product in small quantities at local events like farmers' markets and bake sales. Everywhere she went, she got the same response--people loved it. That positive customer feedback and consistent testing gave her the confidence to go all in. Kelley has always welcomed customer feedback and understands that customers will tell you whether or not they like something. She advises entrepreneurs to not be stubborn with their own thought process and instead listen to the people who are going to purchase the product and consider how you will get them to tell more people about it. Kelley wasn't a business expert when she decided to go all in on her business. With a background in teaching, Kelley is a self-taught entrepreneur who learned from networking groups, online classes, extensive research, and trial and error. She taught herself social media marketing and invested some of the earliest sales of her product right back into her learning through online courses. But some of Kelley's most powerful learning and on-the-job training came from listening to customers. Even as she was repeatedly told no by potential investors, Kelley held strong to the overwhelmingly positive customer feedback and knew her product was a winner. Her efforts paid off as Bug Bite Thing saw tremendous growth and she made it to the Holy Grail for entrepreneurs—Shark Tank—where she had competing offers from all five Sharks. Knowing when to go all in is different for each entrepreneur. But as Kelley knows, researching and testing the concept and learning from customers can provide powerful insights into the demand and potential for a product. Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather and reflect on the things they are grateful for. But it can sometimes be overwhelming and a lot of things can go wrong. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means families and friends are preparing to gather and share a delicious meal. But managing expectations of the holidays and family dynamics can be difficult and take away from what should be a great gathering. Here are our seven strategies to have a successful Thanksgiving feast: Don't work through the holiday. It can be tempting to keep working during the holidays but don't fall into that trap. Tell people you'll be gone, sign out of collaboration tools, and don't respond to email. You are in control—be the example and set boundaries so others will do the same. Taking time off work will help you feel rested and refreshed when you return. Take the high road with passive-aggressive family members. Family dynamics can be difficult, but we've found the best way to address passive-aggressive people is to simply step around their comments. Don't get sucked into their negativity or judgment. Simply take a breath, let the comment hang in the air, and then ignore it. Calling it out can only make the situation worse and more awkward. Set boundaries. Good fences make great neighbors. It can be easy to get pulled into someone else's emotional mess, but you have to set boundaries and take care of yourself first. Don't feel the need to get involved in every situation or help every person who is having a hard time. Listen to yourself and what you need. Remove yourself from difficult situations. When situations get heated or uncomfortable, the best thing you can do is walk away. Go to the bathroom, let the dogs out, or check on something in the kitchen—whatever it takes to get you out of the room. Take a moment to breathe and calmly change the subject when you return. Be true to yourself when dealing with COVID concerns. COVID concerns can be tricky to navigate, especially with people traveling and gathering for the holidays. Be as healthy as you can, but also be true to yourself. You don't have to change your holiday plans to appease someone else's nervousness about the pandemic. Be loving but firm. Don't make everything homemade. The perfect Thanksgiving dinner doesn't have to be homemade. Making everything from scratch can be stressful and time-consuming, which leaves you stressed out and unable to enjoy the holiday. Take some of the pressure off by ordering part or all of your dinner from a restaurant or grocery store. Redirect negative conversations. There are a lot of difficult things happening in the world, and some people tend to focus on the negative. Don't let the complainers bring down your Thanksgiving meal. When people are negative, redirect the conversation towards something more positive or less controversial. Like a boxer, you have to know how to dodge strange conversations and pivot them in a better direction. Following our seven strategies can help you have an enjoyable and stress-free Thanksgiving feast. Happy holidays! We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? In our technology-driven world, entrepreneurs have more tools than ever before. And one of the best uses of those tools is to build online communities and membership sites to build your brand, connect with customers, and sell products. Ellen Yin, founder and podcast host of Cubicle to CEO, built one of the fastest-growing online communities and continues to teach entrepreneurs how to build their own businesses. She says building an online course or community of any kind starts by looking at what will create the best results for your students or customers. Instead of focusing on creating a certain number of modules or including a certain type of content, Ellen says it all comes down to what will create the best results for your students and customers. That requires doing market research to really understand your customers and what they want and need. Ellen says many online entrepreneurs also fall into the trap of thinking they have to create tons of new content each month for their community. But as Ellen says, information and content is free on the internet. People are paying for access to a system for you to be the filter of the information that's out there. Create core curriculum or content and then act as a filter for other information. That could mean reusing content, tailoring it to meet the needs of customers, or providing one-on-one coaching and answers. Ellen says your unique system or the way you process and teach information is what sets you apart from other entrepreneurs. She highly recommends that every online entrepreneur has a signature method for the program they're creating that can be applied to numerous types of customers. The system or program should work for more than just one niche type of person or situation. With a unique system in place, it's time to pre-sell the product. Ellen recommends always pre-selling your product, which involves launching with a founding group of students and then getting paid to create content in real-time. Pre-selling with a beta or founding group of customers allows you to get feedback and test your offer in the marketplace before pouring all your resources into creating a program and content that may not connect with customers. When launching a community, course, or any kind of online platform, Ellen recommends giving customers the first action item to create the first win. It could be anything from creating accountability groups to having customers introduce themselves or giving them a quick assignment—anything to help them feel excited about the system and where it is going so they stay engaged. Building an online community, course, or membership site of any kind can be an incredible growth opportunity for entrepreneurs. Ellen's tips of focusing on what makes your system unique and connecting with customers can set your program up for success. There is a growing number of “parentpreneurs” entering the world of business and we know how tough it is to be one. How did Rachel Hollis create an empire of best-selling books, podcasts, and events? By embracing imperfection, being authentic, and accepting opportunities to grow. Throughout her life and career, Rachel has challenged assumptions and taken risks to become not only a feminist leader but also a successful entrepreneur who has inspired women around the world. But that path hasn't always been easy. One of Rachel's core values is growth, which she admits can be difficult. One day she was sitting on the floor, crying, and eating a cookie because life felt so hard. But as she journaled, she realized that growth isn't possible unless you're uncomfortable. Rachel says that you can either accept the fact that you're going to learn hard lessons to grow, or you can stay where you are in life. If you want to keep evolving, it will be uncomfortable. As Rachel grows and learns in her own life, she looks for ways to take those lessons and share them with other people. Part of that growth is being authentic and embracing imperfection. Rachel keeps all her old interviews and speeches that she stumbled through posted online to show people that it's ok to be flawed and make mistakes. Embracing authenticity builds connections with her audience and shows that she is a real person, just like the women she is speaking to. Too often, entrepreneurs, especially women, are afraid to try something new because they think they have to be perfect and have everything together. Rachel hopes that by showcasing and celebrating the messy middle ground and her learning experiences, she can inspire other women to use their voices for good. She aims to show that women don't have to fit into the buckets they are expected to but can instead create their own buckets and chart their own paths, even if it's uncomfortable. Success as an entrepreneur and in life comes from embracing the imperfections and being uncomfortable so you can grow. To have their voices heard, women have to take risks and be bold, but the result is so needed and can lead to tremendous opportunities. Early on in my career, I learned how important it was to create a list — and that people and organizations would go to great lengths to build one. Lists are essential to your business because they are your revenue— lists help you make money. Today I'm bringing you three reasons why your list is absolutely critical to growing your business. Business acumen and a strong product are important for entrepreneurs, but one of the greatest and often overlooked strengths of entrepreneurs is vulnerability. Kiah Twisselman Burchett didn't set out to be an entrepreneur. But as she began sharing her health journey and honest experiences while working a full-time job, people became interested in following in her footsteps. Her life coaching company, Coach Kiah, was soon born. Kiah believes vulnerability is one of the most important skills for entrepreneurs. Customers need to feel connected to the brand and the person behind it, no matter what product or service you sell. Too often entrepreneurs think they are supposed to be the experts and have everything figured out. But being vulnerable and showing the human side to a business creates a community of customers who connect with the entrepreneur on a different level. Along with vulnerability comes storytelling. People resonate with stories, and being able to share honest and vulnerable stories shows customers and potential customers what things are like behind the scenes. Strong stories build connections and give a face and human feel to the business. Social media makes it possible and easier than ever to share authentic updates through a blog, Instagram, YouTube, or many other channels that meet customers where they are. Kiah says bringing customers along and making them part of the story is incredibly powerful. That often requires getting outside your comfort zone and showing parts of the business or your life that are messy and imperfect. But as Kiah says, stories are what allow customers to see themselves in the entrepreneur and business and are one of the most powerful things you can do. Embracing vulnerability and sharing stories can be intimidating. Kiah recommends giving yourself permission to start where you are with what you have. You might not have the biggest business or fanciest life, but embracing the journey of entrepreneurship and sharing it can be hugely beneficial to your brand and business. What does “being rich” mean to you? Most people assume that it's about having money and wealth — fancy cars, gorgeous houses, expensive things. But it's more than that. Being truly rich is something that goes beyond what you could readily see. And as I became more successful and made more money myself, I realized that being rich isn't about money — being rich is ultimately about TIME. Do you have the luxury of being able to control your time? Are you able to go out and enjoy moments with your family? This, to me, is what truly matters. I'm not saying money is not important. But it's not the most important currency. TIME is the ultimate currency. We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? What platform do we use to find people to join our team? What tools do we use for project and task management? Where do we host and publish podcasts and how do we transcribe them? And More. Why do good ideas fail to succeed? How come genius products and businesses can't make it off the ground? It often isn't the idea or product that causes a business to fail — it's the people. In his new book, The Human Element, David Schonthal breaks down friction theory, which explains why people resist change and what slows them down from making progress. Bringing something to market or trying to create change involves both fuel and friction. Schonthal says most entrepreneurs focus on the fuel, or creating a great product or service and acquiring customers. But the other aspect of friction theory is the friction itself, or the human beings you're trying to influence. Schonthal and co-author Loran Nordgren identified four primary sources of friction or resistance that stand in the way of a product's success in the market. These are the main reasons great ideas fail — they aren't tackling the friction of getting people to change and adopt something new: 1. Inertia. No matter how good your idea is, people naturally resist change. Inertia is the tendency to stick with the status quo. Schonthal recommends tackling inertia by making unfamiliar ideas more familiar and highlighting the improvements and differences of a product so people can make the mental leap to adjust how they live, work, and use the product. 2. Effort. Change requires physical, emotional, mental, and economic effort. If a customer has to put forth a lot of effort to use a new product, they likely aren't going to do it. Great products need to be well-designed in all aspects so that they require as little physical or cognitive effort as possible for customers. 3. Emotion. Adopting a new idea often leaves people with new emotions and feelings. If they are scared to try something new, they may be feeling fearful or intimidated. Too often, Schonthal says the emotional impact on customers isn't taken into account, which can lead to more emotional friction. Focus on how the product makes people feel and what they will feel as they change. 4. Reactance. This is a psychological term that refers to people's aversion to being changed by other people. No matter how good the idea is, people don't like feeling like an idea is being imposed upon them and will resist change because it takes away their decision-making power. Countering reactance involves reframing to provide autonomy and include customers in the decision-making process. Bringing something to market isn't just about creating a great product — it's also about appealing to customers and addressing their reluctance to change. Appealing to the four main causes of friction can help entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level and lead to stronger adoption by customers. Stress is a normal human experience that happens to everyone — and today, I'm talking about how to beat it. As an entrepreneur and mom to two little kids, I constantly face a lot of demands, and some of these things can really wear me down. One of the most essential strategies as an entrepreneur— and as a busy working mom like myself— is to deal with stress effectively. There are many ways to beat stress, but for me, my ultimate stress-busters come in two words: love and laughter. We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? Fresh out of college, Cam Doody and his friend had the idea for an innovative yet surprisingly simple moving company. A decade later, Bellhop is now the fastest-growing moving and relocation company in the country and operates in more than 75 cities. Now, Doody is working to help other early-stage companies through his early venture fund and founder club, Brickyard. Brickyard isn't your typical investor fund. Aside from a monetary investment, early stage companies must move to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to dive deep into their businesses without distraction. Doody calls the Brickyard building a monastery of sorts—a place where early-stage founders can exit the rat race, insulate themselves, and solely focus on building their businesses in an unencumbered way. Early-stage investors are often faced with countless distractions as they're trying to get their business off the ground. But Doody says what really matters is putting your head down with your founding team and grinding. The goal of Brickyard is to provide early-stage founders with funding, resources, and a place to block out the noise and get to work. Doody calls it an insulator more than an incubator. Through Brickyard, Doody has been introduced to countless early-stage ventures. The businesses he is pitched will likely look radically different in 12 months, which means he can't just look at the concept and make a decision. Instead, he looks for people with drive and passion who won't give up as they face the gauntlet of the early days of running a business. Doody says fortitude is one of the most important traits of entrepreneurs. Early-stage companies will likely face dozens of rejections for funding for a variety of reasons. But all you need is one yes. It takes personal conviction to walk into the hundredth pitch meeting with the same enthusiasm you had when you walked into the first one. Doody's biggest advice to early entrepreneurs is to spend time deciding the problem you want to work on. Companies don't fail because the entrepreneurs don't work hard—they fail because they tackle the wrong problems. He says it doesn't matter how good you are at solving problems if you pick the wrong problem to solve. Spending more time initially to choose a problem can make all the difference down the road in securing funding and building the business. The early days of a venture are some of the most volatile and challenging. But with resilience and a focus on the right problem paired with a lack of distraction, founders can be on the path to success. As speakers and authors, stories are essentially the gateway to people's minds and hearts— we use stories to build that special connection with our audience. Collecting stories is a crucial part of being an effective communicator. But the question is— where exactly do you get these stories? What started as a passion project for a mom and a $50,000 investment has transformed into a multi-million-dollar brand. Piggy Paint shows that entrepreneurs don't need a lot of capital to build a strong brand--just tenacity, determination, and a great product. Melanie Hurley was an elementary school teacher when she had the idea for Piggy Paint in 2008. After seeing the issues caused by the chemicals in typical nail polish, Melanie set out to create a brand of non-toxic nail polish that was safe for all ages—especially her two young daughters. With no business experience, Melanie found a chemist online who helped her create the formula. Every decision at the beginning of the company was made with her daughters in mind. Melanie and her husband invested around $50,000 upfront and were incredibly scrappy to grow Piggy Paint. Melanie focused on organic growth and sending samples to bloggers to spread the word, all while fulfilling orders and preparing for trade shows from her basement. At one early trade show, Melanie shared a booth with a friend and spent days peddling products on her tiny table. She ended with ten wholesale orders, each around $150, and was ecstatic with the results. It's a far cry from where Piggy Paint is today, with multiple product lines, 20 employees, a network of sales reps, and products in 1,000 stores across the country. In 2021 alone, the company is on track to sell 2 million bottles of nail polish. But it wasn't always smooth sailing and steady growth. One of Melanie's goals was to get Piggy Paint into Target stores. She got the chance in 2013 with a holiday promotion, but the program wasn't executed well and the products didn't sell. Melanie was discouraged thinking she had blown her big chance. It took several years of waiting for the right time, but the brand was able to get back in Target stores in 2017, where it is now a permanent fixture. The experience showed Melanie the importance of not giving up. Melanie credits hard work and passion for the company's success. Through the ups and downs, she hasn't given up and worked hard every single year on her passion project. We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? For us entrepreneurs, being persuasive is EVERYTHING. No matter what you're selling, you have to get people to believe in you— you have to be convincing. How does one become more persuasive? In my experience, you can achieve it better with three things:
This episode is part two of our conversation with Mel Robbins, bestselling author, highly sought-after speaker, and successful entrepreneur. In part one she shared her journey from rock bottom to the height of success in her career. A lot of us can relate to parts of her story, especially overcoming negative self-talk. Why do so many of us default to negative thoughts instead of positive ones? Mel says there are several reasons why we do that. The first reason is because our brains are designed to remember and amplify negative thoughts and experiences in order to protect us from having it happen again. Another reason is we develop negative self-talk overtime and a lot of times it's not our own voice. It may be the voice of a parent who was critical or a bully from your childhood--but you hold onto that as an adult. A third reason could be if you grew up in a household full of chaos, abuse, or neglect you may have developed a negative dialogue for safety. How the High Five Habit helps change negative mindsets All of these reasons and more make participating in Mel's High Five Habit difficult. When you look in the mirror you may feel damaged, unloved, or broken and therefore unworthy of a high five. We all have issues we are dealing with, but the good news is you can break these mindsets. Mel says, “You've got to give me five days. Five days is what you need in order to break through this. Because what happens is your mind, and this is where the science comes in, your mind, your nervous system, your body, they're actually programmed to have this work. You can't screw this up, because your mind and your nervous system and your body are already programmed for this. And you don't have to do anything but raise your hand.” It can't hurt to try it. You just have to look at yourself in the mirror every morning and give yourself a high five. It will probably feel silly and you may even laugh at yourself, but it works. Your brain knows what a high five is and it knows that it means you're doing a good job, you feel supported, and you get a boost of dopamine. “When you go to wave to somebody, it's a positive thing. When you go to hug somebody, it's a celebratory thing. When you go to pat somebody on the back, you're raising your hands, it's a celebratory thing. When you cross the finish line, you raise your arms, it's a celebratory thing, when you get a high five it's a celebratory thing. So your nervous system, when you keep doing it to yourself, then starts to go, Oh, yeah, okay, here we go. And it gives you a jolt of positive energy. If you start making it a habit, it's why you will start to feel like you're leaving the bathroom with the wind at your back, knowing that no matter what happens, you got yourself, you can face this.” How to deal with negative people in your life As Mel puts it, how other people choose to behave has nothing to do with you. It's their choice to remain negative, you only control yourself. And the more you practice the high five habit and supporting and encouraging yourself, the more it may annoy these people who choose to be negative. You're going to show up differently, you are going to feel more empowered, and that gets under the skin of people who are not doing that for themselves because it is just human nature to want to pull other people down to our level instead of dealing with our own issues. You can't let other people get you down. If others start trying to tear you down because of your new positive outlook on life, don't let them get to you. You may have to cut some people out of your life if they become too toxic. But keep working on yourself and don't let them pull you to their level. “I have deleted the beat down and I have replaced it with a different soundtrack. It doesn't mean I'm arrogant. It doesn't mean I think I'm all that, I've just silenced the relentless focus on what's wrong, I have silenced the relentless criticism. And I've created room for something beautiful, which is optimism, which is being able to look at myself and forgive myself on those days where I am stressed, and I snap at the kids and I feel like an asshole or I'm short with somebody or I screw up royally. I'm able to bounce back when I have a challenging thing happen.” A new direction for Mel's business model The changes that have come about because of Covid have actually caused Mel to rethink her business model. Before the pandemic, she was traveling around a lot and had a videographer with her to capture everything and she had a couple of editors who would take all of the videos and cut it down. She was always out on the road speaking, answering questions, and teaching. But she has found it challenging to move this over to a completely virtual setting and so now she is pivoting how she works. She says she actually doesn't want to go back to the way things were for her before the pandemic, she was traveling too much. She now wants to stick to finding ways to work with people through online courses, programs, and other virtual things. “We're in the middle of reinventing everything, in other words, and so you're gonna see a lot more events and a massive podcast and all kinds of awesome, awesome, awesome stuff. And a lot more partnerships, directing people toward experts in particular areas that have folks that hold people's hands and have systems and accountability and stuff that you need in order to make the change stick.” We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? This one is for all you fellow ‘dadpreneurs' out there.
Our guest this week is Mel Robbins, the most booked female speaker in the world and the bestselling author of The 5 Second Rule and The High 5 Habit. Her TEDx Talk, How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over, has been viewed over 27 million times. Mel is at the top of her career and has seen so much success as an entrepreneur, but she went through a lot to get where she is today. She struggled with anxiety, panic attacks, negative self-talk, and self-sabotaging behaviors. So how did she go from rock-bottom to massive success? In our conversation with Mel she shared all of the details. Entrepreneurship gone wrong After about 13 years of marriage, Mel's husband quit his corporate job and said he wanted to fulfill his dream of running a restaurant. At first she really was against the idea because Mel knew how hard it would be as she grew up working in restaurants and they had a lot of bills to pay. But after her husband kept insisting and pushing for it, she agreed they could try it, but that they would give themselves a timeline. They agreed that they had six months to write a business plan and raise some money, and if the deadline wasn't made he would go back to his corporate job. And sure enough, her husband and his friend were able to meet the deadline and they opened a small pizza restaurant outside of Boston. That location worked out so well they decided to open a second location and they threw everything they could into that location, which looking back on it, Mel knows it was a mistake to do that. They used college funds, 401ks, they took out a home equity and they started a second location. The problem was when it comes to restaurants, the statistics show that one out of the first locations always fails. And when the second location opened it was 2007, right before the financial crisis. They found themselves $800k in debt with a mortgage and three kids under the age of 10. Mel shares, “Nowhere in my life plan or my vision board was an image of a 40 year old, drunk, unemployed woman who could not get out of bed. But that became my life. I became somebody I didn't recognize because when the you know what hit the fan in my life, and it happens to all of us, I rose to the occasion, like a high functioning adult, I basically drank myself into the ground. And then every time I saw my husband, I wanted to kill him and I screamed at him. And you know, funny, those two things didn't really work to solve the problems. But I kept doing it, and doing it, and doing it.” She knew what she needed to do to get back on track--but she was consumed with fear, confusion, and anger and she found herself stuck. And one night as she was giving herself a pep talk about the next day, she had this idea of what if I could move myself so fast out of bed in the morning that I got things done before anxiety hits me. That was the genesis of the idea for her book The 5 Second Rule. And sure enough the next morning came and she launched herself out of bed like a rocket and faced the day. And as Mel shares, we are always one decision away from a different life. Her life would be very different now if she had never decided that morning to launch out of bed. Mel's first presentation did not go as planned Today Mel is the most booked female speaker in the world, but her first speaking experience did not go well. Her first speech was for TEDx and she had never given a speech on stage before in her life. As Mel shares, she was extremely nervous and anxious, she got a neck rash because of it. She talked way too fast, she forgot how to end her speech, and she ended up giving out her email address on stage. She decided she would never give another speech again. But a year later the speech was put up online and people started seeing it and reaching out to her to ask her to speak. And she ended up speaking at events for free because she didn't realize people paid for that kind of thing. But after talking with a woman after one of her events she realized people do pay for speaking engagements, so she put her 5 Second Rule into practice again and from that time on when someone would ask her to speak she would ask what their budget was and whatever they would answer she would said I normally charge double that. And one day she gets a call from a man who has been in the speaking business for years, his wife saw Mel's viral TEDx video and asked her to speak for an event. She used her normal line of “what is your budget?” and he responded with $10,000. At the time that was three months worth of mortgage for Mel and her family and she was shocked. She took the job and she used half of the money to hire a graphic designer to help her with her presentation. She ended up nailing that job and the rest is history. The High 5 Habit In Mel's newest book, The High 5 Habit: Take Control Of Your Life With One Simple Habit, she shares how powerful it can be when you encourage yourself. We spend so much time building others up and celebrating them, but we don't do it enough for ourselves. “The high five habit is having this attitude and this sense of knowingness and grounded confidence that this moment right now, even though it's challenging, or even though it's exhilarating, it's also just a dot on the map of your life. And it too is connecting you forward to something remarkable that hasn't happened yet.” And Mel shares how this mindset has helped her through the pandemic. She remembers the day she first found out about it. She was in her dream job as a daytime talk show host and one day at work they announced to everyone that Covid was found in the building and everyone had 5 minutes to get their stuff and get out of the building. After rushing to her dressing room and grabbing whatever she could she got into her car and drove away not knowing when she would be back. Soon after that she got a call from one of her daughters who was studying in Spain. She was crying and hysterical and saying that they were closing the borders and she couldn't find a flight out. Her other daughter then called and said her college was closing in Southern California. And the first few weeks of the pandemic was Mel, her husband and their three kids locked up in their house and it was just a few weeks of chaos. Mel was fired from her job, her book contract was cancelled, all of her upcoming speeches were cancelled---she just felt overwhelmed and her whole family was in distress. She says, “I remember one morning, I woke up, and I just felt overwhelmed. And we've all had that moment, the stress of your life, the decisions that you have to face, the to-do list that never ends. The fact that you're exhausted, and burn the candle at both ends. And so I used the five second rule, like I always do, 5-4-3-2-1 and got out of bed. And I think that's an important point. Because it's been 13 years, you guys, since I invented that stupid thing. Do you know I still have to use it every morning to get out of bed.” But when she got out of bed and looked at herself in the mirror she started picking herself apart. And after a few minutes of just being negative, Mel raised her hand and high fived herself in the mirror, which caused her to laugh at the moment because it seemed so silly, but the laughter broke her bad mood and she felt lighter. The second day she tried this was the game changer. Mel says, “For the first time in my life, I actually felt excited to see me, the human being. And it dawned on me, you guys, that for 50 some years, I have either ignored myself, or criticized myself in the mirror, I have never had the experience of feeling excited to see Mel Robbins, the person.” She took time to figure out what she needed to do for the day, how was she going to show up, what did she need to do to move the ball forward--and then she raised her hand and sealed it with a high five. And doing this has changed her entire outlook on life. At first it will feel weird and silly, but try it. It just might change your day.
