Lucas Anders interviews Joel Potrykus (director/writer/actor) about his new film VULCANIZADORA. See the Alberta Premiere as part of the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) on Saturday April 26th, 2025 at 4:15 pm at the Globe CInema. A heavy metal slacker comedy, VULCANIZADORA cascades into an existential nightmare and journey through themes of friendship, guilt, and contemplations of mortality. Two friends trudge through a Michigan forest with the intention of following through on a disturbing pact. After they fail, one of them must return home to deal with the legal and emotional repercussions. Director and star Joel Potrykus (BUZZARD, THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK, and CUFF 2018 Secret Screening RELAXER) serves up another deliciously dark film, and possibly the most well-realized culmination of the themes featured throughout his body of work. The Tribeca and Fantasia Film Festival selected film is a masterful combination of jet-black humour and psychological horror.
In this episode, CJ "Fiery" Obasi, the visionary filmmaker behind MAMI WATA, discusses his creative journey, the cultural narratives that shape his work and the commercial and creative path of a storyteller. He discusses the challenges and triumphs of bringing MAMI WATA to life, a film that intertwines African folklore with contemporary themes, and shares insights into the significance of genre filmmaking within the African cinema landscape. James Earl Jones will forever have a place in film history based on his voice alone. From Darth Vader to CNN commercials, he is known the world over. But there is much more to him. Our memories include Conan, baseball, and Mystery Science Theater. The Goonies is one of the most important movies of the 1980s. It is the perfect movie filled with adventure, humor, and a satisfying ending. There was never a sequel because there was not a need for one. But we are getting one anyway. There is no point in complaining about how there are too many remakes and sequels. The question is, are we excited to see it?Where does gross out end and body horror begin? That is just one of the questions Booger had us pondering. The indie film recently made its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. Unlike other movies in the genre, it covers deep themes such as grief, loss, and friendship. Just when it looked like it was going to be something really special, it falls apart, So, what happened?Quinn Armstrong has not made it easy on us. His trilogy seemed like a lot of fun. Stories of exorcisms, doom metal, and death sound like a great combination for a couple of horror fans. While there was some good looking stuff in the first two films, they ended up leaving a bad taste in our mouths. But there was no way Dead Teenagers could fail. It was about a group of friends hanging out at a cabin in the woods. Before long, their fun is interrupted by a masked killer. Yes, we had seen it before, but that was part of the fun. We could not wait to see what Armstrong did with a more straightforward horror story.Regrettably, we never got that movie. Things start off normal enough. There is even a cool Big Bad that is the stuff of franchises. The archetypes are a little different and there is a slight tweak along the way, but Dead Teenagers is definitely a slasher. Until it gets a little too clever for its own good. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. David Lynch is one of our favorite directors. We talk about his recent announcements and look back on some of his films. The Babadook was one of the first horror movies to garner huge internet buzz. It was a “You gotta see this!” that had everyone talking. For its ten year anniversary it will be rereleased in theaters. Will it leave the same impression? We continue our look at sex and horror with a topic we have never discussed before. Both of this week's movies claim to deal with sadomasochism. One of them goes too far - but not in the ways you expect. The other does it in a way that makes you wonder why they even mentioned it was a part of the plot. The Surgeon from 2022 is about a performance artist that gets caught in a S & M love triangle. At least that is what the logline tells you. A better description would be an incomprehensible wanna be psychosexual thriller that throws everything at the audience whether it makes sense or not. Lots of pointless nudity, shocking twists that end up meaning nothing, and characters you will not be sure what to think are just part of one of the worst movies we have ever had on our humble little podcast.Black Eyed Susan makes much more sense. It is about a man who takes a job test a sex robot whose AI learns through punishment. It is a provocative film that never holds back. It also introduces themes that are important in today's society whether we want to think about them or not.The problem is it has good ideas it does nothing with. In a type of story that pretty much requires nudity, when is it too much? How strong of a point can you make when you are literally dehumanizing a character? When is a person so far down on their look you don't even care to look for them? Black Eyed Susan asks a lot of questions - and many of them are interesting, but do they overcome its glaring faults? Bioshock is one of the greatest games of all time. It is not just a one off either as it has two impressive sequels. The stories tackle individuality, class, race, and a myriad of themes in a world filled with 1950s art deco and futuristic technology. They are the definition of “must play” video games. How we overlooked that an adaption is coming to Netflix is beyond us. But we did see the news that the budget has been lowered for it. Will this negatively impact a story filled with awesome powers and robot-like monstrosities? Or is this an opportunity to focus on the amazing story and characters? In a Violent Nature is one of the most exciting and fun slashers to come out in years. It has been a hit with audiences so it comes as no surprise that a sequel has already been announced. Is it too soon or is this the next big horror franchise? We do things slightly differently this week as we look at three films. Our first one is a short that recently made its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. It is also our first entry in our look at sex in genre film. Dirty Bad Wrong is a look at the past and possible future of how we look at sex workers. It is also a tense watch with an uncomfortable climax and thought provoking ending. Before getting hot and heavy, we wanted to dip our toes into sex and horror. We start by entering the modern dating world in The Dead Thing. The plot revolves around a woman whose life is consumed by work, dating apps, and shallow hookups. Until she meets a man who wins her over. But when he ghosts her, it leads to a dangerous obsession.Los Angeles has been the setting for a myriad of movies over the decades. We talk about how this film is different and how it adds to the plot. The direction also combines noir and eroticism in a stylish mix. And while the story does not reinvent the wheel, it does touch on some powerful themes and one of us thought it had an all but perfect ending. It is almost a shame how little The Dead Thing does with its characters, however. Blu Hunt does a fine job in the lead role, but she is given little to work with. There is little in the way of development and if you end up caring about her at all it probably will not be in a positive way. The object of her affections does not give the audience anything to work with. Why is any of this happening? And if I do not know why, how can I care?We step away from sex and close the show with Cuckoo. Intentionally choosing style over substance, Director Tillman Singer crafts an atmospheric tale that is creepy while explaining little. A great performance from Euphoria's Hunter Shafer pair with Dan Stevens in an over the top role are highlights. But are they enough to make up for a plot that has plenty of questions but no answers? Before we get to Fantasia we talk about the rumored Spawn movie. There have been reports about this film for literally decades. Is there any reason to be excited this time around? Plus, a remake that has taken surprisingly long to see the light of day. And sharks, folk horror, and more sharks! We love exploitation films. We have also been known to enter the world of arthouse cinema on our humble little podcast. But what happens when the two worlds collide? Hollywood 90028 is not the only movie to combine the two, but there were not too many that were doing it in 1973.A main character you will not know what to make of, some tasteful nudity (and some not so much), and long monologues are just the tip of the iceberg. Released during a time when the country was struggling to find a new identity, Hollywood 90028 takes on a number of themes. It is not perfect, but it is one of the most interesting movies we have ever discussed on this show. The Beast Within is a Fantasia World Premiere that left us torn. Clearly, it is an allegory for something more. The question is, does it deliver on its message? The performances are great and the setting is beautiful. So why did we both have different opinions about it? Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. Actress Camille Sullivan has acquired a boatload of awards and nominations over the course of her career for her work in an array of dramatic projects like Intelligence, Hunter Hunter, The Birdwatcher, and The Disappearance, but it's her work in a top-rated comedy series that's currently garnering her mad love from critics, fans, industry insiders, and the fine people of TikTok. The series in question is Shoresy, a spin-off of Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney's beloved comedy series, Letterkenny. Shoresy – which recently finished airing its third season and is lacing up for a fourth – follows the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character from Letterkenny named Shoresy as he joins the Sudbury Bulldogs in a quest to never lose again. Camille is Laura Mohr, a reporter who covers the Bulldogs as part of her beat. Shoresy lights up like a Christmas tree whenever he lays eyes on Laura. It's adorable how the normally shit-talking Shoresy is so sweet and earnest during these interactions, and it's so much fun to watch Camille as Laura react with sparkling eyes, mild frustration, bemusement, and (mostly) committed to keeping professional boundaries intact. Camille can also be seen kicking all sorts of emotional ass in thrillers like Exile with Adam Beach, which is now on VOD, and will soon be seen in the highly anticipated Shelby Oaks, which will screen at the venerable Fantasia Film Festival this summer. In this funny and fascinating interview, Camille talks Shoresy, being a loner, acting in highly dramatic movies, why she doesn't miss auditioning in “the room,” and her dream to be the Nicolas Cage of Canada. Host Sarah Burke welcomes Bronwin Parks & Elinor Svoboda to discuss their new podcast 'Late in 88' launching soon on the Women in Media Network! They share the story of how they reconnected for this project after spending 13 years in school together, but not really as friends. They discuss the importance of representation and inclusion in media and the arts while discussing the challenges and progress of the queer community, the history of Pride, and the impact of legislation and societal acceptance. They touch on the importance of queer history, the healing journey of self-acceptance, and the significance of sharing authentic stories and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. Late in ‘88 is a podcast that explores the blurred lines of truth and memory as two grade school classmates share their experiences of growing up queer and gender non-conforming in Calgary, Alberta 1988, at a time when there wasn't language to describe identities that were fringe and undefinable. By shining a light on their middle childhood, Bronwin and Elinor explore the impact of historical context and the gift of contemporary language that allows more freedom of self expression. The series will welcome many special guests and experts including gradeschool classmates, professors, doctors, and experts in their fields. Bronwin Parks is a Calgary city kid who grew up to be a rancher, rodeo cowboi, and the founder of the award-winning Feisty Creative, a top-notch creative agency for the music, film, television, and digital media industries. We have on the show today writer Shaye Ogbonna. When not in pursuit of retro sneakers, Shaye Ogbonna can be found worshiping at the Temple of Story. His most recent feature project is the contemporary western feature GOD'S COUNTRY — starring the incomparable Thandiwe Newton.Based on a short story by acclaimed author James Lee Burke, God's Country is a character-driven thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the American West. Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural college town. She's also grieving her recently-deceased mother, for whom she'd served as primary caretaker. On the day of the burial, Sandra discovers a mysterious red truck parked in her driveway. She soon learns it belongs to a pair of local hunters seeking to enter the forest behind her house. Sandra turns them away politely but firmly – her experience tells her these are not the sort of men to welcome freely into her world. But they won't take no for an answer, and soon Sandra finds herself drawn into an escalating battle of wills that puts her most deeply-held values to the test.In the television/streaming space, Shaye is currently developing JUMPMEN -- a one-hour drama set in the cutthroat world of the sneaker industry – with Showtime. He is also staffed on Showtime's THE CHI and JJ Abrams's DUSTER on HBO. His feature writing debut — 2017's genre-bending LOWLIFE — opened the 2017 Fantasia Film Festival and became a darling of the genre festival circuit, culminating in its acquisition and worldwide distribution through IFC Midnight.Shaye's creative mission is to center marginalized voices within genre storytelling.Enjoy my conversation with Shaye Ogbonna.

Welcome to the season 3 premiere of Spill Your Guts! I'm your host, Kevin Lane. We've be on hiatus for a couple months while I was attending film festivals near and far and sitting down with some of the genres best to share with all of you in this new season. And if I may so myself, it's sure to be some of our best episodes yet. Some upcoming things to look out for our episodes on the great Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal where we watched some terrifying and crazy new movies and had the opportunity to sit down with the filmmakers and do the SYG thing. We also have a special episode coming up on filmmaker and Stop Motion animation legend David Allen who's Magnum opus “The Primevals” is finally completed and seeing the light of day after 30 years. It's an amazing story about one of the genres great unsung heroes. I should also point out some changes you will notice about the show. We will now be dropping new episodes every other week as opposed to weekly to allow ourselves a little more time to produce each episode. The seasons will be a little longer to make up for it though so you'll still get just as much SYG. Also, we will be dropping more bonus episode and surprise guests. In this episode I am joined by one one of the genres great composers. A composer who has a sound and feel like none other and has brought us equal parts wonder and terror with his score for classics like Re-Animator, Trancers, From Beyond, Ghoulies, Puppet Master and the Pit and the Pendulum. And that's just a small selection from the list of classic movies that have been scored by the one and only, Richard Band. Richard is a true virtuoso! His music has a signature and a life to it that immediately ups the ante of any film privileged enough to have him on board as the composer.Well, that's it, now it's time to get into it. Oh and just one more thing… we have something very exciting brewing for you all for Halloween. HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH and let's spill some guts! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

There is not much in the way of movie news this week (at least not the kind we are interested in talking about) so it begs the question: are the two ongoing strikes in Hollywood starting to shows their effects? On the other hand, it is one of the slower movie months of the year, so how much would there be to talk about even if things were going smoothly. Plus, there were plenty of posters and trailers that came out. We also talk about the career arc of Bill Maher. It has been a while since we have talked about a short film on the show. This year's Fantasia Film Festival provided us with some of the best stuff we have seen this year. Transylvanie is an interesting short whose silly name will throw audiences off. Yes, it is cute and has some funny moments, but it is also very dark. We talk about where it fits in the plethora of vampire movies and whether we would be interested in seeing it as full feature. We have never made it a secret that we love erotic thrillers. We dedicated a whole month to the genre (check out our Stank Month shows!) and have talked about it on numerous episodes this year. We have also been lucky enough to cover a couple of movies that came out this year that are reminiscent of the late night premium cable staples. We Kill for Love is one of the best documentaries about cinema our there. It never takes itself too seriously without ever pointing fun at the genre that teenagers of the 1990s grew up on. It tracks the history of erotic thrillers and provides some interesting points. All the while, it will fill audiences with a sense of nostalgia. Even those unfamiliar with the movies will get a kick out of the great interviews and clips.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. In the edition of Simplistic Sitdown, Matt chats with The Adams Family. Sure, they're creepy and kooky, and all together spooky, but this filmmaking family were great and their newest film, World Premiering at the 2023 Fantasia Film Festival, 'Where the Devil Roams,' is probably their most creepy and unnerving offering to date. Toby, Zelda, Lulu and John prove that a family that slays together; stays together. Check out all our other Fantasia coverage over at Simplistic.Reviews. The show starts with a talk about Barbie. It has been a strange year at the box office and Greta Gerwig's latest release surpassed expectations in a record breaking opening. The question becomes what can stop it? It may not be until the October release of The Exorcist: Believer. The trailer sure looks awesome.Fantasia is the biggest genre film fest in North America and each edition has some great offerings. This year is no different as it not only boasts some of the most exciting indie films of 2023, there is also a focus on South Korean cinema. We start our look at Fantasia with the latest movie starring Georgina Campbell. How good is Lovely, Dark, and Deep? The great acting and setting alone make it one of the best of the year. The cinematography is also fantastic, but it is the story the truly sets it apart. It is not very often you see a movie that is so good that it actually makes you jealous.Nicolas Cage as Dracula is awesome enough, but him possibly playing the Devil may be the greatest casting choice ever. Sympathy for the Devil definitely has its twist and surprises, but not all of them were good. We talk about what we like about it and what it did to disappoint us.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. On this episode, Andrew chats with American filmmaker Lola Blanc about her new short film Pruning. This creepy flick follows a Fox News adjacent political commentator, played by Madeline Brewer, who finds herself in a moral conflict when a mass shooter cites her as an influence for their actions. Over fifteen minutes, Lola Blanc forces viewers to question the morality of those who spout reactionary and inflammatory comments in the media, all the while trying to distance themselves from the violence that is inspired by their words. In this interview, recorded ahead of Pruning's International Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, Lola talks about creating the main character with Madeleine, where her interest in exploring the fractured mindset that emerges from these kinds of fringe voices comes from, and then around the halfway mark we head into spoiler territory as Lola talks about some of the more fantastical and unsettling elements of Pruning. Aside from being a filmmaker, Lola is also an accomplished musician and has a successful podcast called Trust Me. Find out more about Lola's work by visiting LolaBlanc.com.
