Ten years ago, 2015 was the year of the epic Western. Two films, Alejandro Iñárritu's The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, clocked in at an average length of 170 minutes and scored a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning 4 between them. As a pair, the two films brought in nearly $700 million at the box office. Along with John Maclean's Sundance darling Slow West, the year marked a return to prominence of the western genre, foreshadowing the next decade's breakout hits like Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and Hell or High Water, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Slipping somewhat under the radar in 2015 was the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler, a prolific author and screenwriter with a penchant for wit, grit, and gore. Zahler cast Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins in a Western akin to John Ford's The Searchers by way of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. When townsfolk are kidnapped by a clan of troglodyte cannibals, four men - the sheriff, a cowboy, a gunslinger, and the back-up deputy - ride out as a posse to rescue them. The indie film quickly earned praise for its direction, dialogue, and disturbing imagery, and has built a cult following in the decade hence. But is our posse of hosts in agreement on how Bone Tomahawk lands? Or will we, too, be split down the middle? I interviewed John Maclean, the director of the coming-of-age samurai revenge movie TORNADO. The titular character is a teenage girl (Koki) avenging her father's murder at the hands of a band of thieves led by Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his son Little Sugar (Jack Lowden).I swear I didn't mean for this episode to drop on Father's Day but it feels appropriate. The movie features two sets of father and child struggling with communication and good old-fashioned rebellion. It doesn't matter that Fujin (Takehiro Hira) nurtures and disciplines his daughter while Sugarman has left his son to fully grow into adulthood with little more than an idea of how to lead a group of ruffians. Either way, kids will roll their eyes. They'll pull a 180 to spite whatever you say.Maclean and I discussed the importance of leading by example, the necessary shift of perspective from one who rejects their parents' tutelage to one who embraces it with warmth. But don't worry, I didn't forget this is a samurai flick, spraying blood and sword-slashed limbs as Tornado's wind-blown hair shrouds her face in captivating mystery. You know I had to talk the Kurosawa influence, especially one shot that genuinely looks like an anime finisher. This was a fun conversation. Maclean is a thoughtful guy, in love with so many different facets of what film has to reveal. I hope y'all enjoy this as much as I did recording it.Pre-order TORNADO on Fandango at Home Please rate, review and subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Instagram and Letterboxd

Our latest guests on Soundtracking are writer-director John Maclean and actor Jack Lowden - who joined me for our film club in partnership with Everyman following a screening of John's new film, Tornado. Starring Jack, Japanese actor Koki, Tim Roth and Takehiro Hira, it tells the story of Tornado - who vows to seek vengeance when her father's puppet samurai show gets ambushed by a notorious gang,
A decade ago John Maclean made his debut feature, the brilliant Western Slow West (2015).It followed a run of brilliant short films and music videos, as well as some of the late 90s and early 2000s most distinctive music during his time in the Beta Band. Tornado - Set in the rugged landscape of 1790s Britain, Tornado (Kōki) is a young and determined Japanese woman who finds herself caught in a perilous situation when she and her father's (Takehiro Hira) travelling puppet Samurai show crosses paths with a gang of ruthless criminals led by Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his ambitious son Little Sugar (Jack Lowden) (Source: Screen Scotland). In this episode Neil talks to writer/director John Maclean about the genesis of the film, his approach to genre and how the film negotiates and navigates the idea of being a genre film and a period film where both elements have been under-represented in the ways they are here. Elsewhere, Neil and Dario discuss how the film's story relates to contemporary notions of [digital] feudalism and representation, genre and audience subjectivity, film language and the cinematic and how (tongue in cheek) Maclean might be the new Hitchcock! ——— Visit our Patreon at www.patreon.com/cinematologists ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. John Maclean's new film Tornado is a samurai revenge western, shot in the hilly countryside around Edinburgh, starring Kôki, Jack Lowden and Tim Roth. In this Reel Insights episode, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, chats with Rory McCann to talk all things Tornado, Star Wars: Ahsoka, Transformers: EarthSpark, and Knuckles.Rory opens up about reuniting with director John Maclean for Tornado, a bold and quiet samurai-meets-Scotland period mash-up that stunned him with its originality. He shares why he didn't even need a script to say yes, and what makes this unexpected film a must-watch.The conversation turns galactic as Rory reflects on the enormous responsibility of taking over the role of Baylan Skoll in Star Wars: Ahsoka, a part originally played by the late Ray Stevenson. With powerful reverence and real excitement, Rory reveals what it's like to be welcomed into one of the biggest universes in the world.Plus, Rory nerds out about becoming Megatron in Transformers: EarthSpark, and shares how voicing the iconic villain was both wild and strangely relaxing. And we get a taste of what's to come in Knuckles, the Sonic spinoff where Rory continues to cement his place as a genre franchise legend.Get ready for a fun, heartfelt, and geek-worthy conversation full of surprises, laughs, and fandom love. The titular character of TORNADO is a teenage girl played by Kôki, living with her Japanese father (Takehiro Hira) as a marionette/samurai performer in 1790s Britain. When Tornado swipes a bag of stolen gold from a gang led by the villainous Sugar (Tim Roth), the gang murders her father and thus begins the revenge of this tale. MacLean borrows from Kurosawa while showing off the (often over-the-top) samurai action but the best parts of this story are all character-based, primarily the dual father-child relationships regarding Sugarman and Little Sugar (Jack Lowden) & Funji with Tornado. I think it's gentler and more nuanced than what the trailer reveals so I'm pleasantly surprised.

Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves, a Psychedelic Venture Studio.Today, we're speaking with John MacLean, AKA The Juan MacLean, an electronic music artist, DJ, and co-founder and co-owner of Cardea—a psychedelic medicine space that facilitates experiences in New York City and Jamaica.I wanted to speak with John because he has a unique lens into the emerging psychedelic world given his role as a DJ and psychedelic facilitator in a wide variety of settings. He has also had one of the most fascinating careers of anyone I have ever met. What started as a fascination with music and psychedelic states as a teenager has led to a career combining the two for more than three decades. As a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer, John has been a mainstay in the NYC music scene for decades while also touring at legendary international venues across Europe, Asia, and North America. Since the release of his first records on his DFA record label in 2002, he has built a reputation for eclectic, genre-bending sets that have earned him residencies at iconic clubs around the world. He has been a practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga and Zen and trained as an Ayahuasquero in the Shipibo tradition. He credits the 12-step program with saving his life and ayahuasca with renewing it.In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss:* How the changing cultural landscape allows John to feel comfortable talking publicly about the psychedelic side of his work;* A period of his life in which he experienced intense depression and occasionally contemplated suicide;* His hope that his first ayahuasca experience would relieve his symptoms, only to be hurled onto a spiritual path, having had his worldview and belief structure completely recast;* His training in the Shipibo tradition;* The authenticity, legitimacy, and originality of traditional lineage-based knowledge in a rapidly changing world; * And much, much more. And now I bring you my conversation with John Maclean.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube* Theme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. John was a professional rugby player and aspiring triathlete during the off-season when an eight-ton truck hit him as he trained on his bike. Medical experts set his chances at “pine or mahogany” and told the family not to expect him to make it through the day. John made it through that day. When he emerged from the coma, he asked about his bike, which had lost significance since he'd now use a wheelchair. Months of treatment and therapy eventually brought him to rebuilding his former self. As he lifted weights with his mate, his father asked, “How far can you go?” Far went well beyond pine box or mahogany. In over twelve hours of swimming, cycling, and wheelchair racing, John became the first paraplegic to meet all the cut-off times as an official finisher of the Kona Ironman. Then he swam the English Channel, the world's busiest shipping lane, in twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, a Paralympic Medal, and learning to walk again well enough to finish the original triathlon for which he was training when the truck met his bike. And there's another challenge on the horizon.
Australian Triathlete John Maclean joins us this week to speak about his incredible achievements. He was the first paraplegic to complete the Ironman World Championship and swim the English Channel. He won silver in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, and now gives back to support all of those who have been afflicted with disability. https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnmacleanspeakerhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/the-john-maclean-foundation/http://www.johnmaclean.com.au/ For all things Life's a Beach, visit our site at https://www.lifesabeach.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifesabeachau/?hl=enSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Guest —John Dietsch is an award-winning author and writer/producer best known for supervising the fly fishing scenes and doubling for Brad Pitt in the classic OSCAR-winning film A River Runs Through It. John's latest book, Graced by Waters, explores our connection to the outdoors through the prism of fly fishing and investigates its transformative and healing power in the face of loss. John currently teaches English literature, guides fly fishing, and facilitates wellness river retreats when he is not writing (or fishing) from his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Summary — Water is the most common physical property found on Earth, but its spiritual properties — its ability to soothe our souls, nurture us, and facilitate deep personal reflection — are just as important. John Dietsch, fly fisher, guide, film producer, author, and teacher, helps us wade into it. Key Discussions √ John's calling and its relationship to water. √ Focus on the process vs. the result. √ The spiritual qualities and connection to water, and why being in water for the fly fisherman is as important as catching fish. √ The purpose of faith. √ The importance of making mistakes. √ The two types of fly fishermen and how those types apply to life. √ John's role on A River Runs Through It and the iconic fly fishing scene at the film's end. √ How the film and the film's metaphor parallel events in John's life. And how the film helped him work through his own pain from the loss of his brothers. √ How serendipity/synchronicity can play a role in our lives if we're observant. Slow West was a 2015 A24 Western film written and directed by punk rock star John Maclean. Taking place in 1870 Colorado, young Jay Cavandish (played by Kodi Smit-Mcphee) treks into the wild wild west with help from a bounty hunter named Silas (played by Michael Fassbender) to find an unrequited love from his homeland of Scotland. On the way, he encounters all the dangers and thrills of the anarchy of the Rocky Mountains. The A24 Rocks gang discusses the screenwriting, directing, and costume design of the film while also debating who they would've been if they had lived in the U.S. in 1870. Slow West was critically-acclaimed and even won an award at the Sundance Film Festival, but does this outlaw gang of film reviewers agree with the critics? Tune in to find out. Caution: movie spoilers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/a24otr/support

Happy Halloween week to all! this week we are in Florida and Scotland and Ireland. Turns out Washington Irving didn't come up with the idea of the headless horseman, he borrowed the story and made a new version. Die Hard's, John Maclean has to defeat his son with a small penis and his unfortunate horse, (what is up with killing horses?) and then we travel to Florida and we feel like shit for a poor former slave midwife, who went 'effin crazy and started killing babies. So many buckets of blood... who's up for a visit to this bridge on a full moon?? We talk movies that scarred us as kids, apparently Donna is impervious to fear.

Western Montana is steeped in fly fishing history and at the epicenter lies the Maclean family, of “A River Runs Through It Fame”. John Maclean, son of Norman, is an accomplished author in his own right and relates the inspiration for this latest book. What began as a recount of a tangle with a monumental rainbow trout morphed into a book, and “Home Waters” was born. John shares his own insight into a childhood spent at a cherished family cabin and the Blackfoot River that is forever linked to his family's history. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lauren-karnopp3/support Learn more about your ad choices. When Lily Clarke arrived at the August Complex Fire, it was a fire of sensational size. The blaze eventually burned more than 1 million acres, becoming the largest recorded wildfire in California history. Across the country in 2020, flames charred an area size nearly 5 times the size of Yellowstone National Park — the largest swathe of land burned since reliable records began. Wildfires across the country are getting bigger, hotter, and more devastating. But what's all this fire really mean — for the west, for firefighters, and for everyday folks? And what's it really like to fight fire on the ground? Lily Clarke fights wildfire for the US Forest Service and received her Master of Science in Systems Ecology from the University of Montana. John Maclean is the author of 5 books about wildfire.
