On April 6-7 1862, some of the injured soldiers at the Battle of Shiloh were touched by angels that went to work healing their wounds with a glowing blessing. Except, the angels weren't really involved. At least, not directly. Listen this week to learn the scientific theory that explains the ethereal glow of the maimed infantry and the fascinating dynamic duo of symbiotes who probably made it happen. ‘Dear Earth' is the show at the Hayward Gallery on London's south Bank that represents a coming together of 15 global artists who are responding to the crisis our planet is facing. We talk to Rachel Thomas, the chief curator and two of the artists exhibiting there, Ackroyd & Harvey. Ackroyd & Harvey have contributed a series of portraits of environmental activists made from seedling grass. Rachel tells us about the other exhibits there, including the moving and enchanting film ‘The Future: Sixes and Sevens' by Cornelia Parker, depicting small children talking about their fears and hopes. Other works include photographs and film of the devastated Kichwa Territory in Peru by Richard Mosse, John Gerrard's ‘Surrender', a digital installation of a flag which heralds visitors into the show, Jenny Kendler's large scale sculpture of birds' eyes – many of the birds are in danger of extinction or already extinct - and the five-metre-high ‘Living Pyramid' at the show's heart by 93-year-old Agnes Denes. We also hear about the Hayward's beautiful roof garden created by Grounded Ecotherapy, set up to help recovering addicts, alcoholics and people with mental health problems. The garden was commissioned 11 years ago and now contains 250 species of wild indigenous plant – more than any other roof terrace in the world. It's a devastating but beautiful exhibition, conceived to convey hope, start conversations and explore solutions via the artists' lens.

A conversation with artist John Gerrard. The Irish-born artist has spent more than twenty years using the latest in technology to create virtual worlds. Unlike video art, Gerrard's work is generated from a handwritten computer program while viewing and no two viewing experiences are ever the same. The content of his work typically asks the viewer to deeply consider the attributes and consequences of the environment they are viewing.https://www.pacegallery.com/artists/john-gerrard/https://www.instagram.com/johngerrard.inst/?hl=en

How do you stage a large-scale artwork during a global pandemic? Galway International Arts Festival, in association with its education partner NUI Galway, lifts the lid on the making and staging of John Gerrard's stunning large-scale artwork Mirror Pavilion, Corn Work and Leaf Work, during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic in this new podcast documentary. Mirror Pavilion, by Irish artist John Gerrard, is a beautiful and striking large-scale structure (7m x 7m), with three sides and the roof clad in a highly reflective mirror and the fourth wall a high–resolution LED wall, which hosts the artworks Corn Work and Leaf Work. The artwork, which is powered by sustainable energy sources, is a response to the escalating climate crisis.
A very special Arena from the Galway International Arts Festival, Seán Rocks is joined by director & writer Enda Walsh, Domhnall Gleeson, music with Tolu Makay, Festival Director Paul Fahy, artists John & Joy Gerrard, dancers Stephanie Dufresne & Luke Murphy.

Author, journalist and campaigner Nicci Gerrard is a pocket dynamo of warmth and energy. She speaks quickly, her lyrical, thought-provoking words tumbling out of her mouth, compelling us to see things in new and different ways. In 2014 she co-founded John’s Campaign with Julia Jones. Its aim is simple: “that the carers of those with dementia should have the same rights as the parents of sick children to accompany them to hospital” and its inspiration came from her late father, the doctor and scientist John Gerrard. For ten years John, who had a deep love of nature, lived well with dementia. “He was”, says Nicci, “going gradually into the darkness”. But this ended with a “sudden rupture” when John went into hospital with leg ulcers and remained there for five weeks. Strict visiting hours, plus an outbreak of norovirus, meant that this man, who’d entered healthy, mobile, articulate and contented, emerged skeletal, immobile, inarticulate, unable to recognise people he’d lived with for decades. John’s experiences and the resulting campaign led Nicci to explore dementia practically, through talking to doctors, carers and those living with it, and more profoundly, in philosophical, almost existential ways. The result is her quite beautiful book, What Dementia Teaches us About Love. “What happens when memories are lost? Who are we then?” she writes. “If we are out of our mind, where have we gone? If we have lost the plot, what happens to the story we are in?”Most recently, as Coronavirus has swept across the globe and the doors of this country’s 21,000 care homes have clanged shut, John’s Campaign has turned its attention to those who live in them, 70 per cent of whom have dementia. Their relatives have been unable to visit them for months, leaving these vulnerable people bewildered and heartbroken because they think they’ve been abandoned by those they love. Which is why John’s Campaign asked the Government to review the guidance around care homes. Family carers, say Nicci and her fellow campaigners, are not visitors but vital to the health and selfhood of people with dementia, and should be recognised as such, and given the same protection, testing and status as key workers.“In the name of infection control, great harm is being inflicted,” Nicci wrote recently in the Guardian. “People can die of heartbreak.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this Desert X 2019 podcast episode, the Irish artist John Gerrard discusses the ideas behind Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017, 2017-2019, located at the Palm Springs Visitors Center. This digital simulation depicts the site of the Lucas Gusher, the world’s first major oil find (in 1901). The site is recreated and marked by a flagpole spewing an endless stream of black smoke. The artwork makes visible the invisible gas responsible for climate change. Desert X runs from Feb 9 - April 21, 2019. Visit desertx.org for program information. The series is presented by Lead Sponsor PROJECT EVELOZCITY, which is creating electric vehicles that will be available by subscription.
John Gerrard says a developed city like Sydney could not cope with an epidemic of the scale of the recent Ebola outbreak. UNMEER/Martine Perret/Flickr, CC BY-NDThe Spanish Flu of 1918 is estimated to have infected around 500 million, and killed between 20 and 40 million, people around the world - all within the space of a year. It is perhaps the deadliest pandemic in human history. We have seen nothing as devastating since, but outbreaks such as influenza, HIV/AIDS, Zika and Ebola highlight that infectious diseases are a constant threat. William Isdale spoke with Dr. John Gerrard about predicting the next major infectious disease threat, and how we can prevent a pandemic from establishing itself in Australia. Tonight's special guest is John Gerrard from Lineville, Alabama, a rape survivor who was sexually assaulted while in prep school. John grew up in New York City in a struggling lower-middle class Catholic family and spent his formative years in Brooklyn in what he describes as "typical dysfunctional tenement living." There was a lot of corporal punishment during his 12 years of Catholic education. The worse experiences occurred at Saint Francis Prep which culminated with his being first befriended, but then violated and raped, by Brother Michael Moran, the principal. "It was the most horrible experience in my life," John says. "I laid there in shock, drugged .." When he saw Brother Michael later he wanted to vomit. "I had an overwhelming sense of despair and powerlessness." In adulthood John floundered but eventually found a career as a New York City firefighter despite heavy drinking and drug use. "I drank and drugged to forget, and the only place I ever felt I belonged was in a burning building." In 1988 he sobered up, ".. after having near heart attacks, guns in my face, blackouts, paranoia, and a state of spiritual bankruptcy where death would have come as a welcomed friend." He goes on, "The next 27 years have been an odyssey of self-examination and spiritual awakening." Today he counsels addicts on a volunteer basis in his community. "I hope to help others with my story," John says, "and plan to use all my power as a citizen to pursue legislative and systemic changes to protect children from future abuse through speaking, writing, film, social and traditional media. I stand with all victims to change the personal narrative from one of victimization to survivorship and advocacy."
In the master-planned Village of University Park, Adventure Playground was decidedly un-planned. It became a beloved neighborhood park soon after it first appeared in the early 1970's. When the park was in danger of disappearing in 2008, local community members formed Defend Adventure Playground, to raise awareness and preserve the park. This week's guests, Alex Hilenbrand and John Gerrard, tell how this group mobilized public sentiment and saved Adventure Playground for generations to come.
