Throughout the glory days of New Labour, John McDonnell sat on the backbenches, a-snivelling and a-sniping. Then his best mate, Jeremy Corbyn, became Labour Leader and the Left got achingly close to power. But in 2019, it all went horribly wrong, as Labour lost voters on all sides and suffered a crushing defeat to the Tories. Boris Johnson became Prime Minister and John quit the shadow cabinet. Labour were in trouble… big trouble. How did John cope with such an emphatic rejection by the British public? The Pandemic has exposed the underlying faults in our society and our economy. Ten years of austerity cuts have meant that our public services have been shockingly ill-equipped to deal with this crisis. Wage freezes, insecure work and lack of employment rights have left people facing potential hardship and an uncertain future. But as more and more people start to question how our society is organised, it is vital that the left is able to provide answers. If we don't, then others will. Claim the Future, led by John McDonnell MP, sets out to develop some of the solutions needed to reframe our economy and bring people together to secure change. This session will consider some of the policy interventions needed to ensure that people have the basics for a decent and secure life: enough to eat, a roof over their heads and the care that we need at different points in our lives. With John McDonnell MP, Nadia Whittome MP, Apsana Begum MP & Ian Byrne MP.

While fighting the government’s response, Starmer also has to keep an eye on his own MPs, who defied the whip this week on controversial new spy powers. Meanwhile, McDonnell reveals his lockdown hobby. Make sense of politics. By demanding the right to socially useful production, the plan reopened the debate on economic democracy. 40 years on, these ideas are as relevant as ever. How can we build workers' control into economic planning? What technological tools are available for us to enhance the possibility of popular economic control? How can organised Labour champion the right to production with a social purpose?
