In this powerful episode of The Long Form Podcast, I sit down with Ghanaian entrepreneur Fred Swaniker — founder of African Leadership University (ALU), ALX, and Sand Technologies. We discuss his deep relationship with Rwanda and President Paul Kagame, the historic decision to cut ties with Belgium, and Africa's urgent need to adapt in the AI revolution. Fred shares insights on entrepreneurship, risks he faced after leaving McKinsey and his vision for African education. We also tackle audience questions on AI risks, ALU's rankings, youth unemployment, and Fred's personal hobbies. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in Rwanda, African politics, entrepreneurship, leadership, ICT, and the future of AI on the continent.Listen to the Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya podcast on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/rw/podcast/the-long-form-with-sanny-ntayombya/id1669879621Listen to the Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7HkkUi4bUyIeYktQhWOljcFollow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on Twitter: https://x.com/TheLongFormRwFollow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelongformrw/Follow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@longformrwFollow Sanny Ntayombya on Twitter: https://x.com/SannyNtayombya About Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya:The Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya is a weekly podcast intent on keeping you up to date with current affairs in Rwanda. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On today's Labor Radio Podcast Daily: Update on the SAG-AFTRA video game strike, on 3rd & Fairfax; American Labor Union founded; ALU quote @WGAWest @wpfwdc @AFLCIO #1u #UnionStrong #LaborRadioPod Proud founding member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Gabriel's upcoming article “American Unionism and Trump: Where are the unions in the struggle against Trumpism?” set to be published soon in Marxist-Humanist Initiative's publication With Sober Senses. The co-hosts, and the article, consider the state of trade unionism after Trump's second election. In particular, they discuss the regulatory framework of federal labor law in America. Trump has already begun meddling with existing labor-law precedent, and the response from trade union leaders has been lacking. An important aspect of their discussion is the quandary that American trade unions find themselves in. The example of the Amazon Labor Union is used to show how difficult a “new beginning” can be. The ALU had seemed like a new moment in the American labor struggle, but they stumbled and were eventually subsumed into the Teamsters. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss embattled New York City mayor Eric Adams and Trump's attempts to get Adams's corruption charges dropped. They consider how Trumpism encourages corruption and cronyism, to ensure loyalty to Trump, and they discuss how this may be combatted.

Kate Wolf speaks with filmmakers Brett Story and Stephen Maing about their new documentary Union, which is out in theaters now. It follows, in real time, the forming of the first ever Amazon union in the country, the ALU, at the JKF8 plant in Staten Island. Later in the conversation Chris Smalls, the president of ALU, joins as well. Chris began to petition for the Amazon union after he was fired by the company in March of 2020 for walking off the job in protest of the lack of Covid safety precautions at the plant. The film picks up about a year later as Chris and his fellow organizers are gathering signatures to ratify their petition to formalize the union process. It captures the ensuing months of grueling work by Chris and other ALU members as they try to convince the 8,000 plus workers at the JFK8 plant that a union is in their best interest. The film is an object lesson in the many tactics needed for political organizing, and the inevitable discord that comes with it, both from the outside—in this case, one of the biggest companies in the world—and from within as well. Also, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, author of Survival Is A Promise: the Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, returns to recommend Audre Lorde's The Black Unicorn.

A conversation about graduate worker organizing with Dianne Deauna and Ken Reyes, two Executive Committee members of Academic Labor United (ALU). ALU organizes graduate workers of the University of Hawaiʻi system to empower them to hold their employers accountable. Even as graduate worker labor is recognized by the University as fundamental to its success, their work is continually devalued by the State and University administration which refuse to pay them a living wage, have no viable process for addressing grievances, and have failed multiple times to keep graduate workers safe in their working environments. ALU is fighting to establish a graduate worker union, which would be the first new public employee union in Hawaiʻi in 50 years. Tags: Hawaiʻi, Hawai'i, Hawaii
Warum eigentlich? This Day in Legal History: Slobodan Milošević Charged with GenocideOn August 30, 2001, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) announced that former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević would face charges of genocide, marking a pivotal moment in international law. This decision added to the existing charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to his role in the brutal conflicts that ravaged the Balkans in the 1990s. Milošević, who sought to prevent the breakup of the Yugoslav Federation through violent ethnic campaigns, was accused of orchestrating mass atrocities, particularly against Bosnian Muslims during the Bosnian War.The genocide charges centered on his alleged responsibility for the Srebrenica massacre, where over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically executed by Bosnian Serb forces. The ICTY's indictment of Milošević was historic, as it was the first time a sitting head of state was charged with genocide by an international tribunal. The trial, which began in 2002, was a complex and lengthy process, reflecting the gravity of the accusations and the challenges of prosecuting such high-level war crimes. Although Milošević died in 2006 before a verdict could be reached, the charges against him underscored the international community's commitment to holding leaders accountable for genocide and other severe human rights violations.Walt Disney and DirecTV are urgently negotiating to renew their distribution agreement before it expires on Sunday. Failure to reach a deal could result in DirecTV's 11 million subscribers losing access to Disney channels like ABC and ESPN just before the NFL season begins and during the U.S. Open tennis tournament. DirecTV is pushing for the option to offer smaller, lower-priced packages that exclude ESPN, catering to consumers' preferences in the streaming era. Disney, however, wants to preserve the value of its sports content, proposing a sports-centric package including ESPN and ABC. The negotiations are influenced by ongoing changes in the pay TV industry, where subscriber numbers have declined sharply due to the rise of streaming services. The companies are also dealing with the impact of sports streaming rights, which have been central to maintaining pay TV subscribers. A new sports-streaming service called Venu Sports, backed by Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery, has been delayed by a legal dispute with FuboTV over antitrust claims related to content bundling practices. The dispute underscores the challenges facing traditional pay TV providers as they navigate the growing demand for streaming options. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for the future of sports broadcasting and the pay TV industry.Disney and DirecTV aim to renew deal ahead of NFL season | ReutersThe DC Court of Appeals has revived a lawsuit against Coca-Cola, brought by Earth Island Institute, alleging the company made misleading claims about its sustainability efforts. The lawsuit challenges statements made by Coca-Cola, such as a tweet asserting that "business and sustainability are not separate stories" for the company. Initially, the Superior Court ruled in 2022 that these statements were merely aspirational and did not violate consumer protection laws. However, the appeals court disagreed, stating that Earth Island plausibly argued that Coca-Cola's statements could mislead consumers into believing the company is environmentally responsible, when it might not be. This case is part of a broader trend of "greenwashing" lawsuits, where companies are accused of overstating their environmental commitments. The Federal Trade Commission is also expected to provide more guidelines on environmental marketing claims through its updated "Green Guides."Coca-Cola Must Face Suit Over Sustainability Claims After AppealX (formerly Twitter) is bracing for a potential shutdown in Brazil following escalating tensions between Elon Musk and Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The conflict intensified when the court froze the bank accounts of Musk's Starlink satellite firm after X failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil by a court-imposed deadline. The dispute stems from Moraes' orders to block certain accounts on X accused of spreading misinformation, which Musk condemned as censorship. Musk responded by criticizing Moraes publicly and offering free internet access to Brazilians via Starlink. The legal battle could result in X losing access to one of its major markets, as the company has already threatened to shut down operations in Brazil due to what it describes as censorship. The situation reflects broader concerns over freedom of speech versus compliance with local laws in digital platforms.Elon Musk's X braces for shutdown in Brazil as spat with judge intensifies | ReutersAmazon lost its bid to overturn a unionization vote at its Staten Island JFK8 warehouse, solidifying it as the company's first unionized facility in the U.S. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) dismissed Amazon's objections to the 2022 election, where workers voted 2,654-2,131 in favor of joining the Amazon Labor Union (ALU). This ruling certifies the election results, allowing the ALU to represent the facility's roughly 8,000 workers. However, Amazon plans to appeal the decision, arguing that both the ALU and the NLRB interfered with the election. Despite the ruling, Amazon may refuse to bargain with the union, potentially leading to further legal battles. The NLRB has already accused Amazon of stalling contract negotiations and retaliating against union supporters. The decision faced dissent from the NLRB's Republican member, who argued that the union's actions, including those by its founder Christian Smalls, illegally coerced workers into voting for the union.Amazon Staten Island Center Is Retailer's First to Unionize (1)AT&T has been fined $950,000 by the FCC for a 911 service outage in August 2023, which affected parts of Illinois, Kansas, Texas, and Wisconsin. This is the latest in a series of similar outages, including two earlier incidents in 2024 that disrupted 911 services across multiple states. The most recent outage was caused by an independent contractor who unintentionally disabled part of the network during unscheduled testing. Despite AT&T's vast revenues and close ties with the U.S. government, which includes significant tax breaks and deregulation, the company has struggled to maintain reliable 911 service. These issues come amid broader concerns about AT&T's network security, as recent hacks have compromised the data of over 73 million customers. Critics argue that the government's lenient oversight and generous financial support of AT&T have contributed to its ongoing performance problems, including these critical service failures.AT&T Has To Settle Over Another 911 Outage, This Time For $950k | TechdirtThis week's closing theme is by Georg Böhm.This week's closing theme brings us into the contemplative world of Georg Böhm, a prominent figure in the German Baroque era. Born on September 2, 1661, Böhm was a distinguished organist and composer whose works deeply influenced the musical landscape of his time. Perhaps best known for his contributions to organ music, Böhm held the prestigious position of organist at St. John's Church in Lüneburg, where he became a key figure in the development of the Northern German organ school. His music is marked by its expressive depth and innovative use of the chorale.Tonight, we turn our attention to his beautiful setting of the Lutheran chorale Vater Unser im Himmelreich, a piece that perfectly captures the devotional spirit of the Baroque period. This work is a chorale prelude for organ, where Böhm takes the familiar melody of the Lord's Prayer and weaves it into an intricate and reflective tapestry of sound. Through his masterful use of counterpoint and ornamentation, Böhm brings out the theological and emotional depth of the text, creating a piece that is both meditative and majestic. As we listen, we can appreciate Böhm's ability to transform a simple hymn tune into a profound musical meditation, making it a fitting choice for our closing theme. Enjoy the rich harmonies and spiritual resonance of Georg Böhm's Vater Unser im Himmelreich. This is a public episode. We've got quick stories from Kentucky, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Greece, Australia, and Japan this week, before we get into a short follow up as the limited energy workers of IBEW Local 46 in Seattle have voted to end their strike. Then we check in with Starbucks Workers United, where despite continued union busting by the company, have continued to rack up tons of new union wins. Also this week, ALU workers in New York voted to officially affiliate with the Teamsters, as the union works to bring its resources to the broader fight to organize Amazon nationwide. The NLRB issued its first "Cemex" bargaining order this week, requiring a Las Vegas casino to recognize and bargain with workers after flagrant union busting during the election. Finally, we close out with congratulations for the staff workers of 1199SEIU, who just won the right to a union of their own. This Day in Legal History: Posse Comitatus Act Passed On June 18, 1878, the U.S. Congress passed the Posse Comitatus Act, a significant piece of legislation that shaped the relationship between the military and civil authorities. The Act made it a felony to use the Army to enforce domestic policies without explicit authorization from Congress or the Constitution. This law emerged from the Reconstruction era's complexities, particularly the federal military's role in enforcing laws in the Southern states post-Civil War. The term "posse comitatus" translates to "power of the county," and the Act aimed to reinforce the principle that civil authorities should maintain law and order without military involvement. The Posse Comitatus Act reflected a commitment to preventing military overreach in civilian matters and preserving democratic governance structures. This principle has influenced various legal and military policies over the years, including modern discussions on the military's role in domestic security. The Act underscores the balance between maintaining national security and protecting civil liberties, a balance that remains a cornerstone of American legal and political thought.Fisker Inc., an electric-vehicle startup, filed for bankruptcy after halting production of its problematic Ocean SUV. The company's filing in Delaware lists assets between $500 million and $1 billion and liabilities between $100 million and $500 million. This bankruptcy protects Fisker from creditors while it plans repayment.Henrik Fisker, known for designing BMW and Aston Martin cars, founded Fisker Inc., his second EV venture to face bankruptcy. His previous company, Fisker Automotive, also went bankrupt in 2013. Fisker Inc. went public in 2020 through a SPAC merger, raising roughly $1 billion and partnering with Magna International Inc. for vehicle manufacturing.Production of the Fisker Ocean SUV began in November 2022 but was plagued by missing features and software bugs. Influential YouTuber Marques Brownlee's negative review in February further damaged the company's reputation. Fisker produced over 10,000 vehicles but delivered fewer than 5,000 to customers. The company tried partnering with franchised dealers but faced significant financial difficulties, warning in February about its uncertain future. Although it secured $150 million from a lender, a potential deal with an automaker fell through. Magna International, a partner, halted further production of the Ocean SUV. Fisker's bankruptcy highlights broader challenges in the EV market, with several other startups also filing for bankruptcy amid slowing sales in the U.S. and Europe.Troubled Electric Vehicle Maker Fisker Files for BankruptcyUnion members at Amazon.com Inc. have voted overwhelmingly to align with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a major U.S. labor organization, in a move that could significantly impact staff contract negotiations. About 98% of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) members supported this partnership, aimed at securing better jobs and working conditions for Amazon employees. The ALU, which achieved a historic win in 2022 by organizing workers at an Amazon facility in Staten Island, faced setbacks in subsequent elections and internal conflicts. The union struggled to bring Amazon to the negotiating table. However, ALU President Chris Smalls and 15 other officials reached an agreement with Teamsters President Sean O'Brien and his team in Washington. The Teamsters represent approximately 1.3 million people. This collaboration between the ALU and the Teamsters signals a significant step forward in labor organizing efforts at Amazon, potentially increasing pressure on the company to engage in meaningful negotiations with its workers. Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside normal business hours.Amazon Union Allies With Teamsters in Big Labor AdvanceThe EPA's new limits on PFAS in drinking water are a positive step but more comprehensive regulations are needed to manage the release and disposal of these harmful chemicals. At a recent conference, stakeholders including parents, firefighters, and farmers discussed the need for broader measures to eliminate nonessential PFAS uses and enforce stricter waste management practices.CDC data shows that reducing PFAS in drinking water correlates with lower blood levels of the chemicals in residents, validating the EPA's efforts. However, the current rules do not prevent the release of PFAS into water or apply to private wells, affecting millions of people.Environmental advocates emphasized the necessity of treating PFAS as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The EPA's recent designation of certain PFAS as hazardous under the Superfund law aids cleanup efforts but falls short of comprehensive waste regulation. Proper disposal methods are critical to prevent further contamination, yet data on PFAS waste disposal is limited due to insufficient regulation.Participants called for more stringent discharge permits under the Clean Water Act and quicker implementation of hazardous waste rules. PFAS, widely used in industries like semiconductors and battery production due to their stability and resistance to damage, require robust management to prevent environmental and health risks.Examples of contamination were highlighted, including high PFAS levels from military bases causing serious health issues. The EPA's database on waste transfers shows significant amounts of PFAS-contaminated materials being sent to incinerators and other facilities, underscoring the need for better waste tracking and management.Advocates stress that eliminating unnecessary PFAS uses and implementing strong regulatory measures are essential steps to protect communities and the environment from long-term PFAS contamination.PFAS Drinking Water Limits Praised but More Regulations SoughtIn the ongoing litigation over Johnson & Johnson's (J&J) allegedly cancer-causing baby powders, a new legal battle has emerged over attorney-client privilege. Plaintiffs' lawyers accuse J&J of misusing the bankruptcy process to evade liability and are pushing for the crime-fraud exception to force the company to disclose internal communications. This could reveal J&J's strategies to limit liability in around 61,000 talc-related cases. The litigation involves J&J's use of the "Texas Two-Step," where it transfers liabilities to a subsidiary, which then files for bankruptcy. This maneuver has been met with controversy and legal challenges. Plaintiffs' attorneys argue that J&J's actions are fraudulent attempts to avoid liability and are calling for these communications to be made public to bolster their case.In a recent development, the plaintiffs are also seeking to disqualify some lawyers representing J&J and to prevent the company from proceeding with an $11 billion global settlement plan. This settlement, which requires approval from 75% of the plaintiffs, has faced opposition from some plaintiffs' firms.Despite J&J's efforts to resolve the litigation, the plaintiffs' legal team argues that more needs to be done to ensure justice for those affected by the contaminated talc products. They are also challenging J&J's use of bankruptcy as a tactic to force settlements and are pushing for the court to invalidate J&J's attorney-client privilege in this context. The outcome of this legal battle could significantly impact the strategies used in large-scale product liability cases, particularly those involving mass torts and bankruptcy.J&J's Talc Litigation Saga Gets Attorney-Client Privilege TwistThe IRS should adopt a remote-first work model to attract top talent and enhance operational efficiency. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that remote work is not only viable but also desirable for many employees, particularly in the tech sector. As the IRS continues to modernize with advanced technologies like AI and machine learning, it needs to recruit top-tier tech talent. Offering remote work can help attract this talent by allowing employees to work from anywhere, increasing job satisfaction and expanding the pool of potential applicants. The Treasury Department has found that job postings highlighting flexible working arrangements attract more applicants. Additionally, the IRS can save on overhead costs by reducing its physical office footprint, which remains significant despite many employees working remotely part-time. A remote-first approach would also help the IRS compete with private sector tech firms, which have successfully used remote work to attract employees despite offering lower salaries. This flexibility would enable the IRS to draw a diverse workforce, fostering a variety of perspectives and ideas. Existing policies limiting remote work to within 200 miles of an office need reform to maximize employee flexibility. Security is a critical concern, given the sensitive nature of taxpayer information the IRS handles. However, research indicates remote workers are often more aware of cybersecurity practices. To support a remote-first model, the IRS would need to invest in tech infrastructure and rework management and accountability measures to focus on outcomes rather than hours worked. Starting our labor news this week we discuss big union election news by healthcare workers in California, construction workers in Quebec, and Starbucks workers all over the country. In our first main story, we discuss attempts to quash organizing around Palestine by conservative leadership in a major AFSCME local in NYC. Next we cover this week's update in the historic UC stand up strike for Palestine, as the University administration continued to try to crush the strike in court. For our big story this week we discuss the surprise announcement of the ALU affiliating with the Teamsters to add national muscle to the fight against the e-commerce giant. Finally, we discuss the ongoing strike by the IBEW workers of Local 46 in Seattle, fighting the greed of general contractors and also for respect on the job. Also, as we discuss at the end of the show, we're trying something new! Submit your stories about bad bosses, organizing wins, and other workplace tales to our new Google Voice number!
