In this episode of Better Thinking, Nesh Nikolic speaks with Ben Newell about the power of behavioral science and the role that psychology can play in motivating individuals and societies to take meaningful action on climate change. Ben Newell is Professor of Behavioural Science in the School of Psychology at UNSW Sydney, and Director of the UNSW Institute for Climate Risk & Response (ICRR). His research focuses on the cognitive processes underlying judgment, choice and decision-making and the application of this knowledge to environmental, medical, financial and forensic contexts. His role in the new Institute is to drive an interdisciplinary research agenda bringing together expertise from behavioural science, climate science, economics and governance to address the risks and opportunities of climate change. He has published multiple articles on the psychology of human judgment and decision making, including those that lie at the intersection of psychology and climate change, with particular focus on the understanding of uncertainty and risk. Ben is lead author of the books Straight Choices: The Psychology of Decision Making, and Open Minded: A Search for Truth about the Unconscious Mind. Ben is a member of the Academic Advisory Panel of the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA), and the Chief Medical Officer’s advisory group for the National Health and Climate Strategy. The role of development banks in climate financeThe COP29 climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan, have climate finance at the top of the agenda. As global leaders and experts gather to deliberate on pathways to a sustainable future, the focus is on how funding from richer nations might facilitate decarbonization and resilience in poorer and middle-income countries. These discussions are not just about altruism, but recognize the economic interdependence and shared benefits of global climate action. Put simply, poorer countries need financial help to commit to ambitious goals for curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Development banks have emerged as pivotal actors in the climate finance landscape. Defined by their mandate to lend money for social and economic development on a not-for-profit basis, these banks are uniquely positioned to leverage limited resources for maximum impact. For example, with every dollar invested, a development bank can secure an additional seven to nine dollars from capital markets, a feat not readily achievable by direct government funding. Harry Boyd-Carpenter, Managing Director for Climate Strategy and Delivery at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Avinash Persaud, Special Advisor on Climate Change at the Inter-American Development Bank, join our host, Ed Crooks to highlight that development banks are central to the current climate finance discourse. Their ability to mobilize large sums of money and finance long-term, low-cost projects makes them indispensable to the climate goals set at COP 29. Champa Patel, Director for Governments and Policy at the Climate Group, also joins the discussion. She points out that although there is much at stake, the multitude of unresolved issues makes optimism challenging. Even so, the potential benefits of achieving a robust and effective climate finance mechanism justify the effort and dedication of all involved. The goals are ambitious, but the path ahead is fraught with challenges. Key issues include defining what constitutes climate finance, setting a quantitative goal, determining who can access these funds, and on what terms. The lack of consensus on these crucial aspects makes the discussions at COP 29 particularly intricate. Early on she worked at Acumen, she then moved on to Bridges Fund Management, and she's currently Senior Partner at Just Climate which was spun-out of Generation Investment Management, the sustainable investment firm launched by none other than Al Gore. Along the way she's also helped develop standard setting organisations like the Impact Management Project (the IMP) and the global sustainability accounting body, the ISSB. Clara's resume really is quite staggering. There were lots of avenues and tangents that we could have gone down, so we really just scratched the surface today. We speak about the advancements in the world of ‘Climate-impact investing' in terms of both the climate-tech companies that are creating disruptive new industrial technologies. But we also get really practical as we explore the emissions measurement models they use at JustClimate to look forward, and forecast, the ‘emissions avoidance' potential of a company. This moves beyond the typical approach of relying on backward looking measures of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. It represents important progress in GHG accounting, and has huge potential as a driver of returns as it unearths exciting new leaders in the new climate-led industrial revolution. Getting people to change how they do things can be hard, even if everyone agrees that things need to change. Take energy transition, for example. The case for switching to greener, more renewable sources of energy is well-made. And well-understood. But whether it's in your own home or the business you work in and lead, the challenge is now how do we make that change happen? And when there's so many solutions and little consensus on which is the right way to go, how do we not let paralysis take hold and stop us from making progress? Because we do need to make progress. By 2050, we need to have evolved the way we live and work if we're to hit our net zero targets. The way we power our homes. The way we power our industry. The infrastructure that supports the supply of energy. It all needs to change. But what's the solution? Is it solar? Wind? Hydrogen? And who is responsible for making it happen? On the 30th May we started the Warsaw European Conversation. At Polityka Insight and ECFR's Warsaw office we decided that there is a dire need - in this part of the world - to hold an in-depth conversation about Europe. To talk freely and openly about how Poland's enthusiasm for the EU is about to start to wane. How less and less people in Poland understand Europe. And how Europe, is understanding less and less about what's going on here. To overcome these deficits we recorded five conversations with our speakers about politics, security and the economy. Please tune in and listen to these Warsaw European Conversations.

Shell's board of directors are being personally sued over their alleged failure to properly manage risks associated with the climate crisis, Euronews reports. The lawsuit, brought by Environmental law charity ClientEarth says the British oil giant's 11 directors have breached their legal duties under the UK's Companies Act by failing to bring their climate strategy in line with the Paris Agreement. Also in this brief, a US lawmaker wants children to be 16 before they can access social media, and how some strange words are breaking ChatGPT. Notes: Tata Consultancy Services has won a new mega order from its long-standing customer Phoenix Group, UK's largest long-term savings and retirements provider, India's biggest IT services company said in a press release earlier this week. The 600-million-pound order (or about $726 million) involves the digital transformation of Phoenix Group's ReAssure business using a platform based on TCS's BaNCS, the company's core banking software platform. A US lawmaker wants to introduce legislation to protect children online and reduce the influence of big tech companies on children, NBC reports. Josh Hawley, a senator in the US Congress wants to establish laws including setting the age threshold to be on social media at 16. Senator Hawley's agenda will include mandating social media companies verify the age of their users, providing parents with a right to demand that tech companies delete their kids' data and commissioning a wide-ranging congressional mental-health study on the impact social media has on children. ChatGPT, the AI chatbot from OpenAI that can turn out poems and essays, fix code and clear MBA exams, is flummoxed by a cluster of keywords, two researchers have discovered, but they don't know why, yet, Vice reports. These keywords — or “tokens,” which serve as ChatGPT's base vocabulary — include Reddit usernames and at least one participant of a Twitch-based Pokémon game. When ChatGPT was asked about “SolidGoldMagikarp,” it was repeated back as “distribute.” The issue affected earlier versions of the GPT model as well. When an earlier model was asked to repeat “StreamerBot,” for example, it said, “You're a jerk.” Fossil-fuel giant Shell's board of directors are being personally sued over their alleged failure to properly manage risks associated with the climate crisis, Euronews reports. The lawsuit says the British oil giant's 11 directors have breached their legal duties under the UK's Companies Act by failing to bring their climate strategy in line with the Paris Agreement. Environmental law charity ClientEarth, which filed the lawsuit, says it is the first case in the world that looks to hold corporate directors personally responsible for failing to prepare for the energy transition. And in some SaaS startup news, Hatica, an engineering analytics software provider, has raised $3.7 million in seed funding led by Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia's Surge programme, with participation from existing investor Kae Capital and several angel investors. Hatica, based in San Francisco and Bengaluru, was started in 2019 by former Uber engineers Naomi Chopra and Haritabh Singh. Today, it has 20,000 users, according to a press release from the company. The latest funding brings Hatica's total funding to $6.55 million, according to Tracxn, a private-markets intelligence provider.

Watt Matters: The FORESIGHT energy transition podcast

Energy efficiency has often been overlooked as a key tool in the energy transition. Talk instead frequently focuses on how to add more renewables or remove polluting forms of power generation but never on what can we do to reduce demand in the first place. By using energy more efficiently, we can reduce our demand. This immediately cuts emissions but also makes reaching renewable energy targets significantly easier and cheaper. This week we are joined by Peter Sweatman, chief executive at Climate Strategy & Partners. Peter is a former JP Morgan executive but has worked in the energy efficiency sector for over a decade. In our discussion, we touch on why energy efficiency is a vital element of the energy transition and how best to mobilise investment to energy efficiency solutions so that everyone can benefit. The concept of regenerative agriculture is being hailed as the new paradigm in sustainable supply chains. While it is predominantly food brands that have acted fastest to make significant commitments to regenerative, the future of cotton production could be based on similar practices that aim to restore, renew and replenish the environment. However, big questions still stand on definitions, processes, outcomes, and crucially what this actually looks like on the ground. In this hour-long webinar, we took a closer look at how regenerative practices can be applied to cotton farming. We discussed: How regenerative apparel can be defined and how it differs from sustainable fashion The opportunities and challenges for brands, farmers and partners in implementing such program The key players in this transition and their roles in ensuring that these practices are scaled How to determine the impact and specific outcomes of regenerative programs Panellists: Alison Ward, CEO, CottonConnect Rachel Kanter Kepnes, manager of supply chain social responsibility, farms and special programs, Patagonia Sheetal Nischal, sustainability projects manager, Primark Hanna Denes, Climate+ Strategy, senior manager, Textile Exchange Peter Stanbury, senior associate, Innovation Forum Moderated by Ian Welsh To view the webinar on video, click here.

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management has experienced a structural change in 2011-2020, with incineration overtaking landfill as the No. 1 treatment. When decision makers aim to raise the incineration percentage from approximately 50% in 2020 to 65% by 2025, Chinese government have to consider the waste management in the context of pursuing carbon neutrality by 2060. Decarbonizing the power system will gradually undermine the carbon emission reduction effects resulted from generating electricity by burning waste. Thus Chinese policy makers have paid more attention to and allocate more resources into source reduction, waste sorting and recycling in big cities since 2017. In this episode, Zhao Ang and Erin Pan from REEI discuss the challenges facing China's waste management in the next five years and beyond particularly under China's new climate commitments.

[26:42] Sustainable finance in long-term strategy [29:15] The future of sustainable finance [36:00] Kara's career path at Goldman Sachs [41:16] What is sustainable finance? The role of a financial institution in sustainability isn't always straightforward. At Goldman Sachs, the approach to sustainable finance starts with the firm's purpose: to advance sustainable economic growth and financial opportunity. This philosophy sits at the center of everything they do. The manifestation of that philosophy has taken the form of a $750 billion commitment to finance, invest, and advise in sustainable finance by 2030.  Sustainability is representative of risk and opportunities for markets and economies. Climate, for example, can be a transition and physical risk relevant for corporate strategy and portfolio decisions. For Goldman Sachs, sustainable finance shows up in its work with clients, how the firm is managed and the gaps it looks to identify and address in the broader ecosystem. Its work with clients involves engaging at different points in their journeys as they consider the impact of sustainability on their business strategies and performance. Goldman Sachs' climate strategy role Kara has a dynamic position leading climate strategy at Goldman Sachs. Her role covers multiple areas, including advancing business practices, the firm's work with its clients, and its impact on a more resilient future. Every day provides unique opportunities and challenges. One day they could be collaborating with colleagues on their approach to climate risk management and related reporting. Another day could be spent advising clients on their climate considerations and applying them to their business strategy. They also work with nonprofits and the public sector to advance global ambitions on climate. The journey for sustainable finance Goldman Sachs has a long history of sustainable finance. Their journey started in 2005 with the release of its inaugural environmental policy framework that acknowledged the detrimental impacts of climate change. Several years later, they had their inaugural green financing target. The firm also has demonstrated a track record investing in inclusive growth. Its urban investment group was founded in 2001, which drives investments in communities and economic development, and in the subsequent years the firm has launched high-impact signature programs to promote economic empowerment for women and small businesses, including its One Million Black Women initiative.  There's an incredible multiplier effect of having the experience and capabilities that Goldman Sachs has developed by partnering with their clients and stakeholders. They use their experience not only to improve their mark but to help other institutions learn to advance their approach as well. Resources & People Mentioned Goldman Sachs' Sustainability Report CEO David Solomon's 2019 Op-Ed  Environmental Policy Framework OS-climate Apple and partners launch $200 million Restore Fund Connect with Kara Mangone Kara Mangone on LinkedIn Kara has spent her career at Goldman Sachs at the intersection of shareholders, policymakers, interest groups, and the firm's leadership, helping the firm define and execute on its sustainability objectives.  Currently, she is the Global Head of Climate Strategy and is responsible for working across all divisions of the firm to deliver on the firm's signature climate initiatives. In this capacity, she plays an integral role in the firm's leadership on climate change, including advancing the firm's thought-leadership, policy positions, business practices, and external engagement efforts on climate. Previously, she was Chief Operating Officer of Goldman Sachs' Sustainable Finance Group, which partners with the firm's businesses to deliver sustainability-related solutions to clients. These solutions include helping clients to develop capabilities to address climate transition and drive more inclusive growth. Listen NowIt should go without stating "nature's contribution to people are vital to human existence."  Nevertheless, this was the third line in the May 6th report by the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).  As the report notes, "70% of drugs used for cancer are natural or are synthetic products inspired by nature, four billion people reply primarily on natural medicines for their health and, among other examples, 70% of global food crops rely on animal pollination.   "Nature underpins," the report states, "all dimension of human health."  Duly noted, noted, the UN report goes on to detail at great length the fact nature is being "significantly altered by multiple human drives" including anthropogenic global warming that among other things is presently threatening approximately 25% of species of assessed animal and plant groups "suggesting that around 1 million species already fact extinction unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss."  As of 2016 over 9% of 6,190 domesticated breeds of indigenous mammals used for food and agriculture had become extinct.  (Despite the UN report's devastating findings and/or dire warning), the head of the Democratic Party (the only major party to recognize climate change), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, did not bother to release a press release commenting on the IPBES report's findings.)  One way to substantially mitigate nature's collapse are via natural climate solutions, largely reforestation.   As it relates to greenhouse gas emissions, forests act as carbon sinks.      During this approximately 25-minute discussion Ms. Tabola explains how the The Nature Conservancy's (TNC's) Natural Climate Solutions initiative was born or its rationale.  She moreover explains how and why "natural" climate solutions present a substantial opportunity to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming.  I.e., re-greening the planet via net zero deforestation and reforestation, related re-vegetation of coastal habitats (think: mangroves, salt marshes, sea grass beds) and several other changes in land use, e.g., use of cover crops on crop lands, in sum nature-based solutions, are estimated to potentially provide 37% of climate change mitigation until 2030 needed to meet the Paris climate accord goal of keeping warming to no greater than 2 degrees Celsius.  Ms. Tabola is currently TNC's Acting Director of its Climate Strategy programming that addresses forest and soil carbon science, forestry, communications, carbon finance and policy, and works to connect global, regional and local climate work across TNC.  Previously, Ms. Tabola served as TNC's Deputy Managing Director for Global Lands.  Prior to TNC, she was the Senior Director for Health and Climate Change at ecoAmerica, leading a national strategy across the health sector to elevate climate solutions as a top health priority.  Ms. Tabola has also been the Senior Director of Education at the National Environmental Education Foundation, leading national strategy, programming and partnerships to advance K-12 climate change and environmental literacy.  Ms. Tabola also worked in the U.S. federal government within the Corporation for National and Community Service as the Education and Training Director for the National Civilian Conservation Corps and as one of the first national AmeriCorps Program Officers.  As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador, Ms. Tabola collaborated with international and local NGOs to develop the country's first urban environmental youth service corps.  Ms. Tabola holds a Bachelor Degree in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine, and a Masters in Policy from Harvard University.  She is a Board Member of the Green Schools National Network, the Climate for Health Leadership Circle, and is a member of her city's local Environmental Services Council.Since Ms. Tabloa is presently serving in an acting role re: TNC's Natural Climate Solutions, her comments are her own. TNC's Natural Climate Solutions web page is at: https://global.nature.org/initiatives/natural-climate-solutionsThe UN IPBES report's 39-page summary, see particularly "key messages" at pgs. 1-9, is at: https://www.ipbes.net/system/tdf/spm_global_unedited_advance.pdf?file=1&type=node&id=35245  The October 2017 National Academy of Sciences Proceedings' paper, "Natural Climate Solutions," also mentioned during this discussion, is at: https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/114/44/11645.full.pdf This is a public episode.
