An Earth Day lesson in ‘forever chemicals'

When the first Earth Day was recognized, on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans – at the time, 10 percent of the total U.S. population – demonstrated in gatherings around the country to protest industrial developments that had led to serious human health impacts. And so began the modern environmental movement. The theme for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet” – chosen to emphasize that everyone can further environmental progress. One wrong trying to be righted by researchers in UC Irvine's Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health involves per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – a massive group of synthetic chemical compounds that don't break down easily. Known as PFAS, they are pervasive and persistent. The most studied of these “forever chemicals” indicate a toxicity that affects liver and thyroid function, and some have been shown to lead to cancer. In 2019, Scott Bartell, professor of environmental and occupational health, launched the UCI PFAS Health Study after receiving a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to lead California's contribution to a national multisite probe. In this episode of The UC Irvine Podcast, Bartell will share what drew him to the study of environmental contaminants, where PFAS are found and how people can decrease their exposure. He'll also update what his team has learned about PFAS and what work is left to be done, as well as grade how the human race is doing in its efforts to take better care of the planet. “Walking in the Sky,” the music for this episode, was provided by Nico Staf via the audio library in YouTube Studio.

April is Earth Month - with Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22 - and this year the theme is once again: “Our Power, Our Planet.” This statement reminds us that protecting our planet is demonstrated through everyday individual actions. Every effort and every voice matters! Small, consistent actions add up to big change. HSD embraces and demonstrates conservation practices throughout the year in ways that you might not realize. These include:Food Scrap Collection. All school kitchens collect food waste, which is picked up by our hauling service and taken to a composting facility. Textile Recycling. Many of our schools have an on-site textile recycling bin for the collection of unwanted clothing items. Food and textile waste are two of the most abundant and harmful to our environment, significantly contributing to the accumulation of greenhouse gas emissions. Did you know that roughly 800,000 tons of food are wasted annually in Oregon and that only 15% of textile waste in the U.S. is recycled? How can you help?Reduce food and food-related waste by:Taking only the food and beverage you will consume Using durable (not disposable) dishes, beverage bottles, and utensilsChoosing plastic-free containers, and Sorting your waste before disposingReduce textile waste by: Choosing natural fibers and dyesBeing “thrifty” and shopping secondhandLearning to mend your clothing, andBuying less and buying better qualityThese actions and more are listed on our calendar of Healthy Earth Action Items. The ideas listed are simply a launching point - tailor your actions to fit your vision. The most effective actions - and the ones you're likely to stick with - are those that interest you. Have fun!For more ideas and inspiration, visit our Resource Conservation webpage and earthday.org.Congratulations to the Oregon Battle of the Books grades 3 through 5 team at Tamarack Elementary School, and to the grades 6 through 8 teams at Evergreen and Poynter Middle Schools. They performed well enough in their regional tournaments to qualify for the OBOB State Championship on Saturday, April 11, at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. OBOB is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program. Students on an OBOB team read one or more books from lists provided by the OBOB organization, then compete against other teams in “battles” to see which can earn more points by answering questions about those books. Way to go and best of luck at State, OBOB teams!Third quarter ends on Thursday, April 9. There will be no school for students on Friday, April 10, as elementary teachers have a work day and secondary teachers prepare grades. School resumes on Monday, April 13. Part 2: Emotional Self‑Care & Processing In this episode, I get personal. I share real moments of grief, anger, overwhelm, and what I did instead of turning to food. This episode shows you: processing emotions isn't 'weakness', It's a powerful act of self care. What you walk away with: Permission to feel — grief, rage, fear, overwhelm — without shame or guilt. A reminder that our emotions are important. Suppressing them often only buries OUR POWER. A simple (but effective) emotional self-care process that starts with naming what you feel. A model for emotional self‑care that honors your experience, your body and your self care as sacred. This is not self‑care fluff. It's much needed support and medicine. Press play. Brenda PS. I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destinationMoving Beyond Inner SeparationAt the heart of our core - is a deep inner split between who we are and who we think we must be to feel worthy. This division persists due to external standards that make personal worth seem measurable and dependent on validation. The mind, conditioned for approval, creates conflict between what is “acceptable” and what must be hidden or improved. This inner separation fuels external division, driving an US vs. THEM mindset. If you can't reconcile your own trauma's, you'll project it onto reality as good vs. bad or worthy vs. unworthy, leading to judgment and the belief that survival relies on aligning with the right group. Breaking this illusion starts by recognizing how deeply separation has taken root within—where do you feel divided or doubt your wholeness? By exploring these harms, you dissolve fixing and perfectionism—the urge to prove worth—and develop self-trust and unity. As inner unity grows, the world appears less fractured; differing perspectives no longer threaten your sense of self. In this way, we move from separation to wholeness within ourselves and in our world. We are moving toward truth in spirit because this entire game here is one massive, huge deception.So....Why? Do they - do we - separate ourselves? To hide us from ourselves. Our Power. Our Agency. To make us feel like we are small human beings. To make us feel like all of this is the real thing, and this is all there is.We are only these bodies and only these minds and only these thoughts. That's not true. That's just a minuscule, a tiny expression of who we actually are. That is coming out.I think if I look to the year 2035, ten, nine years from now, it is still chaotic. There is still a lot of transformation. But the baseline perception of what our reality is will have changed by then.Fewer people, far fewer people, will actually view this world as solid, material, or real. They won't believe the current origin stories.A lot more people will be closer to the truth at that point.Think about how your life has changed since you have been questioning all of this. When this happens on an even larger scale, hundreds of millions of people, we are going to see vastly different thoughts. We will see vastly different ideas.Nothing is going to happen overnight. This might take a whole generation or two to really trickle out, but it is happening. In all of this, our main focus needs to be to be as balanced, as harmonious as we can be.We need to do the work that shows up for us.We need to heal our old wounds. We need to forgive ourselves. We should not give ourselves grief about the stuff we believed in.We need to transform the guilt and the shame.Guilt and shame have been so ingrained into our existence. For some people, these are constant companions throughout their lives.Guilt and shame—they constantly feel guilty about something or ashamed of something. It absolutely keeps them from experiencing something deeper, more profound. That was a tactic that's big on the religious side of things. We are going to see everything.Everything will be so much more visible. If you could rewind with your current awareness, if you could go back to the year 2010 or 2008.From that perspective, look at what we are seeing today. It is insane. It is literally insane. It is unbelievable what is being talked about today on a political stage and everywhere else.We forced that into the limelight. There is no backing away from it.A lot of people keep hoping that we are going to return to some level of normalcy. For some, that is 1986—that was their level of normalcy. For others, it is 1992 or the 70s or the 50s.It doesn't matter. We are never going to return to that level of normalcy because it wasn't normal. The world wasn't normal. It was just as insane, only much better hidden. The insanity happened more in the shadows than out in the light. Now it is out in the light. That is what makes it so valuable in this process. The more you expand your awareness, the more you become that which you truly are, which is infinite. The more of that you experience, the better your life becomes. You begin to thrive. At the same time, you are still going to be able to observe the insanity unfolding. That is the challenge. That is why we need to stay strong and centered. That is why we need community and communication. That is why we need to show up for each other. That is why we need to remind each other of what is happening.Everything is coming down.Every last system of lies and deception is coming down.If not today, then tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then in a year from now or two or ten.But it is coming down.It is in the process already. It is not something that needs to start happening. It has started. And....Self-agency is critical and extends the idea of choice, emphasizing the power or freedom to direct oneself and act according to your own heart. It involves the capacity for free will and the process of selecting one's course of life. The power of choice shapes our lives, fostering personal growth, autonomy, and self-connection. Understanding choice dynamics and embracing ambiguity helps unlock our full potential for agency and self-determination.Love, Kassandra

ARCHITECTING Podcast - Career + Lifestyle Mentoring for Architects looking to move beyond overwhelm and make a difference thr

What's considered sustainable from a public health perspective? Not necessarily the same things that we might otherwise uphold. We celebrate the 2025 Earth Day theme of Our Power, Our Planet with architect and integrative environmental specialist Molly Scanlon who shares insights on a new model for architecture practice. Adjacent industries hold the key to practice innovation. Seeing the issues through another point of view moves us past the constraints of business as usual. Advocacy requires having a flexible perspective and taking initiative to build your expertise and avenues of impact Things don't change unless you do. Buildings can become a non-pharmacological intervention in the world of public health as we add additional research related to safety and sustainability. Architects can provide a holistic vs. a traditionally component based understanding common in public health. Supporters argue it ensures fairness and safety for female athletes, while opponents claim it targets vulnerable transgender youth and addresses a non-existent issue in Georgia. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns praised the bill as a step toward protecting female sports. It now awaits Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. STORY 5: Opening delayed for federal park at Buford Dam The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed the Laurel Ridge Trail south of Buford Dam and Lower Pool East Park until June 28 for construction of a new footbridge. April is Earth Month, and what a perfect time to celebrate as the onset of spring brings the first glimpse of nature's fresh vibrancy! While every day could technically be considered Earth Day, April 22 bears the official moniker and is a call to action. With a theme of “Our Power, Our Planet,” each of us is encouraged to determine what this means to us and how we will put our ideas into action. The possibilities are endless and each action toward environmental stewardship makes a difference. HSD embraces and demonstrates conservation practices throughout the year. In the month of April, the days get longer, the grass is greener, and temperatures are more moderate. Earth Month is a perfect time for buildings to take advantage of these conditions to conserve natural resources through efforts like water management, daylight harvesting, and bringing outside air into buildings. This year, HSD is also running a Resource Conservation Challenge that is open to all teachers and administrators, which encourages conservation while at school, work, home, or traveling. Students - ask your teachers about this challenge! For those who are motivated by gamification, try the Earth Month BINGO card! This activity is designed to bring awareness and prompts for more sustainable practices. Print it out and post it on a refrigerator or classroom bulletin board for full family and/or classroom participation, or take the conservation one step further and keep it handy on a phone or computer. The topics listed on the card are simply a guide. The most effective actions - and the ones you're likely to stick with - come from topics that interest you. Have fun!For more ideas and inspiration, visit our Resource Conservation webpage and earthday.org. Our featured event is Liberty's HVAC and boiler replacement project. Even though Liberty High School was just 21 years old in 2024, its proprietary and unique-to-that-building HVAC direct digital control - or DDC - system was at the end of its life. Additionally, three of the school's five boilers had either already failed or were failing. These factors were contributing to poor system performance, high energy usage, and occupant discomfort. The time had come to replace the failing equipment, but with an overall price tag of $2.2 million the District was left wondering how the project could be completed. Energy Services Company. Willdan was hired to assist. Willdan's team worked with the Energy Trust of Oregon and the Oregon Department of Energy to find funding opportunities. With tremendous success, the total Energy Trust incentive awarded was $636,000, which is the largest ever awarded for a single HVAC project. The balance of the project cost was covered by the Department of Energy's SB 1149 Public Purchase Charge program. We now have upgraded DDCs for Liberty's HVAC system, and four new high-efficiency boilers instead of five, which are anticipated to result in an annual energy savings of $140,000. A representative from Willdan presented the School Board with a ceremonial check for the Energy Trust incentive at the February 25 Board meeting. Many thanks to our Facilities team and Resource Conservation Manager Mia Hocking for all of their hard work and dedication to seeing this important project through to its completion. Think what life was like in the Deep South, a few years after the Civil War, for those who had been enslaved. Hello Dear Ones! After a month of being silent mode (and navigating a natural disaster) ... sitting with what words and wisdom wanted to emerge to support and guide us through these intense, transformative times... the inspiration came through for a 3-part series on Power ... specifically what I am calling "Genuine Power" - natural, innate, native power, different than authentic power and for sure different than distorted power. We are going to explore what genuine power looks and feels like ... what distorted, destructive power looks and feels like ... what is at the roots of both...  how do we open up our eyes to see and discern truth and reality .... and then how do we apply our co-creative power to reimagine the way we and this world work, now, from the inside out. This first episode in the series is #254: A Call to Honor, Humanity & Sanity.   Imagine this: What if in order to hold a position of power and leadership in any system - from a corporation to government to a family or community - a person had to meet the qualifications of embodying and expressing Honor, Humanity and Sanity ... and they also had to create an environment that instilled and cultivated those qualities in others?     Remember, the fertlizer to the see of new, elevated realities are to imagine it, bring language to it, and then through our voices, choices, presence, relations and projects, co-create it. In the podcast we will hone in on HONOR. HUMANITY. SANITY and use the power of the definitions below to bring forth the essence of what we are talking about what leadership - personal and systemic - looks and feels like when it's rooted in wholeness.  Genuine - native, natural, innate Honor - regard to respect. honesty. integrity. Honor is the harmony between humility and dignity.  Humility - freedom from false pride or arrogance, not equating worth to being better than Dignity - healthy self respect, quality of being worthy of honor  Sanity - health/healthy. the ability to think and behave in normal, reasonable manner, sound power of mind.  Humanity - man + earth, humane, to be a steward, to show care for other humans without regard to how their beliefs or choices may be different or similar to yours.  See you there! Christine Remember ... OUR POWER comes from connecting with heart and purpose with others, to support each other to stay light - centered, radiant, clear -- and to explore and conversate so we can co-create new realities into being.  ___ >>INSPIRED ACTIONS - Be an Agent of Elevation >> INSPIRED ACTION: Share this podcast with a friend. Share some Hope Biscuits - evidence of Honor, Humanity and Sanity you are seeing. >> INSPIRED ACTION: Acknoweldge and appreciate a man in your life who embodies and has expressed the energy of Honor, Humanity or Sanity. ___ Resources + Connect Daily Harmonizing Kit - www.dailypracticekit.com Connect on Linked In - https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinearylo/ Learn about Feminine Wisdom Way + Cyclical Living www.femininewisdomway.com Connect on Feminine Wisdom Cafe - for inspiration and resources to stay harmonized + wield your co creative power and wisdom! - go here.

Meet Ashanti Branch: Ashanti is a key-note speaker, thought leader, and advisor. His work has been featured at SXSW, on CNN with Lisa Ling, in the documentary 'The Mask You Live In', and a documentary about  "American Masculinity". He is a Fulbright Fellow, a Rotary Fellow, a Stanford d.school Fellow, and a 4x Tedx Speaker Ashanti has been working with youth for over 18 years as the Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club (EFC), a non-profit organization dedicated to seeing marginalized students graduate high school by providing them emotional tools and mental health support. Formerly an engineer, Ashanti found his passion while tutoring struggling students from African-American and Latino communities, and seeing 40% of them, heart-breakingly, give up. By fulfilling deeper emotional needs to feel safe, seen and heard, The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its student members graduate high school. We have all heard the famous Gandhi quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”  If I'm being honest, there are so many times I look at something that I know is wrong in the world and say, I wish that was different, or I wish someone would do something about that.  What I love most about Ashanti is that he is actually doing the work. He saw a problem, a need, and then did something. And then he kept doing. So much so that his work has gone from passion to mission to movement. It is people like Ashanti who remind me that “we are the people we've been waiting for.” That the things that we want to change are up to us AND in OUR POWER to change. And that one person, yes one person, can truly make a world of difference.
