ARCHITECTING Podcast - Career + Lifestyle Mentoring for Architects looking to move beyond overwhelm and make a difference thr

What's considered sustainable from a public health perspective? Not necessarily the same things that we might otherwise uphold. We celebrate the 2025 Earth Day theme of Our Power, Our Planet with architect and integrative environmental specialist Molly Scanlon who shares insights on a new model for architecture practice. Adjacent industries hold the key to practice innovation. Seeing the issues through another point of view moves us past the constraints of business as usual. Advocacy requires having a flexible perspective and taking initiative to build your expertise and avenues of impact Things don't change unless you do. Buildings can become a non-pharmacological intervention in the world of public health as we add additional research related to safety and sustainability. Architects can provide a holistic vs. a traditionally component based understanding common in public health. Pick the right opportunities and keep your schedule open so you have the time and energy to get involved with what matters to you. „Our Power, Our Planet - Du machst den Unterschied“ - die Welt feiert den internationalen Earth Day. Am 22. April soll auf Umweltprobleme aufmerksam gemacht werden und darauf, dass jeder dazu beitragen kann die Situation zu verbessern. Weltweit laufen dazu kleinere und größere Aktionen. Aber: Earth Day, so what!? Themed “Our Power, Our Planet,” the event, hosted by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett Solid Waste, will collect hard-to-recycle items like electronics, paint, tires, clothing, and paper. In 2024, the event diverted 72 tons of waste from landfills. Volunteers aged 16+ are needed to assist. Activities include face painting, touch-a-truck, and refreshments. Fees apply for certain electronics, and participants should use disposable containers for recyclables. Visit GwinnettCB.org for details. STORY 2: Gwinnett Technical College Sets Enrollment Records Gwinnett Technical College has achieved record enrollment with over 11,500 students this spring, marking an 8th consecutive semester of growth and a 15% increase from last year. President Dr. D. Glen Cannon credits the rise to students transferring from four-year colleges for affordable, hands-on programs, the school’s flexible learning options, and a 99% job placement rate. The legislation applies to public schools, colleges, and private institutions competing against them, requiring athletes to compete based on the sex on their birth certificates. Supporters argue it ensures fairness and safety for female athletes, while opponents claim it targets vulnerable transgender youth and addresses a non-existent issue in Georgia. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns praised the bill as a step toward protecting female sports. It now awaits Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. STORY 5: Opening delayed for federal park at Buford Dam The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed the Laurel Ridge Trail south of Buford Dam and Lower Pool East Park until June 28 for construction of a new footbridge. While the 3.8-mile trail’s northern section remains open, visitors cannot complete the full loop. Lower Pool East Park, typically open in late March, will also stay closed. The Corps encourages visitors to explore alternative trails and recreation areas during this time. Additionally, Bald Ridge Creek Campground’s opening is delayed until April 14 for septic system repairs. April is Earth Month, and what a perfect time to celebrate as the onset of spring brings the first glimpse of nature's fresh vibrancy! While every day could technically be considered Earth Day, April 22 bears the official moniker and is a call to action. With a theme of “Our Power, Our Planet,” each of us is encouraged to determine what this means to us and how we will put our ideas into action. The possibilities are endless and each action toward environmental stewardship makes a difference. HSD embraces and demonstrates conservation practices throughout the year. In the month of April, the days get longer, the grass is greener, and temperatures are more moderate. Earth Month is a perfect time for buildings to take advantage of these conditions to conserve natural resources through efforts like water management, daylight harvesting, and bringing outside air into buildings. This year, HSD is also running a Resource Conservation Challenge that is open to all teachers and administrators, which encourages conservation while at school, work, home, or traveling. Students - ask your teachers about this challenge! For those who are motivated by gamification, try the Earth Month BINGO card! This activity is designed to bring awareness and prompts for more sustainable practices. Print it out and post it on a refrigerator or classroom bulletin board for full family and/or classroom participation, or take the conservation one step further and keep it handy on a phone or computer. The topics listed on the card are simply a guide. The most effective actions - and the ones you're likely to stick with - come from topics that interest you. Have fun!For more ideas and inspiration, visit our Resource Conservation webpage and earthday.org. Our featured event is Liberty's HVAC and boiler replacement project. Even though Liberty High School was just 21 years old in 2024, its proprietary and unique-to-that-building HVAC direct digital control - or DDC - system was at the end of its life. Additionally, three of the school's five boilers had either already failed or were failing. These factors were contributing to poor system performance, high energy usage, and occupant discomfort. The time had come to replace the failing equipment, but with an overall price tag of $2.2 million the District was left wondering how the project could be completed. Energy Services Company. Willdan was hired to assist. Willdan's team worked with the Energy Trust of Oregon and the Oregon Department of Energy to find funding opportunities. With tremendous success, the total Energy Trust incentive awarded was $636,000, which is the largest ever awarded for a single HVAC project. The balance of the project cost was covered by the Department of Energy's SB 1149 Public Purchase Charge program. We now have upgraded DDCs for Liberty's HVAC system, and four new high-efficiency boilers instead of five, which are anticipated to result in an annual energy savings of $140,000. A representative from Willdan presented the School Board with a ceremonial check for the Energy Trust incentive at the February 25 Board meeting. Many thanks to our Facilities team and Resource Conservation Manager Mia Hocking for all of their hard work and dedication to seeing this important project through to its completion. Think what life was like in the Deep South, a few years after the Civil War, for those who had been enslaved. Poverty was the norm —maybe there was no work, maybe backbreaking work not much different than before the war, now at a desperately low wage. But what were the opportunities for the newly freed? What were the hopes? Hello Dear Ones! After a month of being silent mode (and navigating a natural disaster) ... sitting with what words and wisdom wanted to emerge to support and guide us through these intense, transformative times... the inspiration came through for a 3-part series on Power ... specifically what I am calling "Genuine Power" - natural, innate, native power, different than authentic power and for sure different than distorted power. We are going to explore what genuine power looks and feels like ... what distorted, destructive power looks and feels like ... what is at the roots of both...  how do we open up our eyes to see and discern truth and reality .... and then how do we apply our co-creative power to reimagine the way we and this world work, now, from the inside out. This first episode in the series is #254: A Call to Honor, Humanity & Sanity.   Imagine this: What if in order to hold a position of power and leadership in any system - from a corporation to government to a family or community - a person had to meet the qualifications of embodying and expressing Honor, Humanity and Sanity ... and they also had to create an environment that instilled and cultivated those qualities in others?     Remember, the fertlizer to the see of new, elevated realities are to imagine it, bring language to it, and then through our voices, choices, presence, relations and projects, co-create it. In the podcast we will hone in on HONOR. HUMANITY. SANITY and use the power of the definitions below to bring forth the essence of what we are talking about what leadership - personal and systemic - looks and feels like when it's rooted in wholeness.  Genuine - native, natural, innate Honor - regard to respect. honesty. integrity. Honor is the harmony between humility and dignity.  Humility - freedom from false pride or arrogance, not equating worth to being better than Dignity - healthy self respect, quality of being worthy of honor  Sanity - health/healthy. the ability to think and behave in normal, reasonable manner, sound power of mind.  Humanity - man + earth, humane, to be a steward, to show care for other humans without regard to how their beliefs or choices may be different or similar to yours.  See you there! Christine Remember ... OUR POWER comes from connecting with heart and purpose with others, to support each other to stay light - centered, radiant, clear -- and to explore and conversate so we can co-create new realities into being.  ___ >>INSPIRED ACTIONS - Be an Agent of Elevation >> INSPIRED ACTION: Share this podcast with a friend. Share some Hope Biscuits - evidence of Honor, Humanity and Sanity you are seeing. >> INSPIRED ACTION: Acknoweldge and appreciate a man in your life who embodies and has expressed the energy of Honor, Humanity or Sanity. ___ Resources + Connect Daily Harmonizing Kit - www.dailypracticekit.com Connect on Linked In - https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinearylo/ Learn about Feminine Wisdom Way + Cyclical Living www.femininewisdomway.com Connect on Feminine Wisdom Cafe - for inspiration and resources to stay harmonized + wield your co creative power and wisdom! - go here.

This episode, our guest host, Scott Elias, better known as "ScottySolar," welcomes Derek Chernow from the Coalition for Community Solar Access, Matthew Freedman from The Utility Reform Network, and Alexis Sutterman from the California Environmental Justice Alliance to unpack the effort to revamp California's community solar market amidst the CPUC's proposed decision. The Tantric text of practice, Gheranda Samhita, states that there are 5 Stages of Prana1. Activation 2. Churn 3. Consolidate 4. Ignite 5. DirectWhich implies that when we practice we need to make an intention, so that the Prana we cultivate can be directed to something useful. Through Yoga gaining Self-Knowledge and through Tantra we master Prana power we can effectively shape our lives to manifest what we desire. Prana Vayus are platforms for the breath to rest on for Asana, Pranayama and meditation. This gives us something for our mind to follow, learn from and control to lead us to an enriched life experience, contentment within ourselves and freedom from the pain and suffering in our lives. Asanas are used to improve the quality of the breath. We dynamically move to sense this life force, shape our vital energy and direct it to heal and transform obstructions and to inspire greater insights. The breath is the vehicle for Prana. We open the many road ways – the highways, motorway, country roads, dirt roads and drive ways that are the energetic links that carry sensory info and actions thru-out the systems. Along the way we will find diversions, road works, accidents and dead-ends which are all useful in gaining self-knowledge as self-reflecting our thoughts, emotions, memories and imagery of what comes up. The instances of distraction, or what draws us out of presence is invaluable in understanding what is between you and being free, between you and feeling serene, between you and allowing love in, between you and living with joy, between you and healing.Where the mind goes Prana follows. Our Power of Attention is key to practicing Yoga. The Power of Intention is equally important. They are both ways to be Present. Yoga Sutras 1.34-1.39 provide the suggested focus points to direct the mind and Prana. First breath awareness, then sensation, then inner illuminosity, then contemplate a stable mind by focusing on mantra or intention finally awakening to moment by moment awareness. Using Yoga and Tantra to weave all experiences in to our practice with the goal of cultivating Prana then directing it to what matters to us most.To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Phil Jackson, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team!'”   YouTube: https://youtu.be/40fUX9wjEH0   Check Out These Highlights:  Leadership skills seem to change and evolve just as we humans change and evolve.  If COVID has taught us anything, it's that change is inevitable and how we deal or react to that change will define how we show up as leaders.   Another piece of the puzzle to great leadership is the exchange of energy to help people within our teams or organizations to thrive not just survive using positive and encouraging feedback and support.   Leaders, we can no longer rest on our laurels or what used to work.  Today, the impact we make on our teams boils down to energy and how we yield this wonderful tool that we all have within us.  No exceptions!   About Kurt Bruckmann: As an accomplished Athlete, Player, then as a Coach for over 25+ years, my guest and friend Kurt Bruckmann has always had an innate drive to lead by example and experience. This adversarial system  is set up to ruin families and it is a system of "pay to play."    It is time to be vocal about how many people this is affecting. It is people that are trying to survive every day or have been diagnosed with mental illness that is now being used against them in the courts. The world will say whatever about us but we always have a choice and we get to decide how we will relate what is happening to us. This pathological system, it is chaos and the most effective way through it is to go inside and gain your own resources in terms of a support system and empowerment.     Live a life that means something to you. Moving forward we are not under such naive illusions that life is fair, it is not. Don't put your faith in what is happening in the outside world and people are not alone. Laurie encourages to enjoy every day, do a gratitude practice, no matter what is happening around you. His work has been featured at SXSW, on CNN with Lisa Ling, in the documentary 'The Mask You Live In', and a documentary about  "American Masculinity". He is a Fulbright Fellow, a Rotary Fellow, a Stanford d.school Fellow, and a 4x Tedx Speaker Ashanti has been working with youth for over 18 years as the Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club (EFC), a non-profit organization dedicated to seeing marginalized students graduate high school by providing them emotional tools and mental health support. Formerly an engineer, Ashanti found his passion while tutoring struggling students from African-American and Latino communities, and seeing 40% of them, heart-breakingly, give up. By fulfilling deeper emotional needs to feel safe, seen and heard, The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its student members graduate high school. We have all heard the famous Gandhi quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”  If I'm being honest, there are so many times I look at something that I know is wrong in the world and say, I wish that was different, or I wish someone would do something about that.  What I love most about Ashanti is that he is actually doing the work. He saw a problem, a need, and then did something. And then he kept doing. So much so that his work has gone from passion to mission to movement. It is people like Ashanti who remind me that “we are the people we've been waiting for.” That the things that we want to change are up to us AND in OUR POWER to change. Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Benjamin Franklin, “Energy and persistence conquer all things!'”   YouTube: https://youtu.be/tUSZ0j3Qta8   Check Out These Highlights:  It's funny, my whole life I have been told I have a positive aura and high energy level.  I have also been told I exhaust people due to that high level of energy.  Yup, two sides of the spectrum.    Through the years hearing these types of descriptions has helped me pause and become curious as to how human connect and grow specifically through their exchange of energy.  For me, energy is contagious, so I am mindful every time I am with people, so I can use my energy to inspire and energize, not exhaust them.    It has been a lifetime of practice and coaching as to how to use my strengths and natural gifts (my positive, and inspiring energy) to help others find their strength and light to shine in the world.    About Kurt Bruckmann: As an accomplished Athlete, then as a Coach for over 25+ years, my guest and friend Kurt Bruckmann has always had an innate drive to lead by example and experience. He does this while helping Athletes in developing their understanding of performance through their combined physical, mental, and energy makeup in becoming the most complete athlete he or she desires.     Transition is part of all sports and by assisting the Athlete in “Trusting the Process,“ through the empowerment of self-understanding, inner energy flow, and aligning with the mind and body, we create the opportunity in becoming the complete Athlete desired.   “Our Mind, Body and Energy is Our Power” not just in the Athletic Culture but in Life itself.    How to Get in Touch With Kurt Bruckmann: Email:   kurtbruckmann11@gmail.com   Stalk me online! Building Local Power
The Movement to Take Back Control From Monopoly Electric Utilities

On this episode of Building Local Power, we share a recording of ILSR's recent event Democratizing Power: New Citizen Initiatives Challenge Monopoly Electric Utilities. Across the country, powerful utilities are actively blocking decentralized solar energy, degrading the reliability of the power lines even as they raise prices, and failing to make the grid investments needed for a clean, carbon-free future. Listen to ILSR's Stacy Mitchell and John Farrell facilitate conversations with the advocates who are leading the movement to take back control from electric utility monopolies. Highlights of the event's discussions include: Rep. Seth Berry and Sen. Rick Bennett of the Maine State Legislature discuss Our Power, a citizen-led ballot campaign in Maine that aims to convert the utility serving most of the state to a consumer-owned electric company, allowing for competition and innovation on a public grid system. Jean Su, Energy Justice Director at the Center for Biological Diversity, explains how advocates in Arizona are using antitrust and anti-monopoly laws to fight a big utility's plans to crush customer-owned rooftop solar power. Mariel Nanasi, Executive Director of New Energy Economy in New Mexico, tells the story behind a recent and highly unusual rejection of a proposed utility merger in New Mexico, brought about by grassroots advocacy effort. “Clean electricity is how we get out of the climate emergency. And all of that needs to flow over the poles and wires. Those poles and wires are a monopoly. And because of the last 150 years or so of the evolution of that industry, we have allowed it without really thinking about it. Without really noticing, we've allowed it to globalize, we've allowed it to conglomerate. We've allowed it to be the province of the few in order to extract value from the many. And so this is about power. It is about money. It's also very much about climate. If we're going to decarbonize, we know that we need to shift to consumer ownership because it works.”     Related Resources Democratizing Power: New Citizen Initiatives Challenge Monopoly Electric Utilities The Role of Antitrust Law in Creating Energy Justice — Episode 127 of Building Local Power Mainers Consider Putting Electricity, Internet in Local Hands — Episode 103 of Building Local Power In Santa Fe, Momentum Builds for Locals to Take Charge of Electricity System – Episode 39 of Local Energy Rules Podcast A David and Goliath Fight to Tap World Class Solar – Episode 14 of Local Energy Rules Podcast Transcript Jess Del Fiacco: Hello. Welcome to Building Local Power, a podcast dedicated to thought-provoking conversations about how we can challenge corporate monopolies and expand the power of people to shape their own future. I'm Jess Del Fiacco, the host of Building Local Power and communications manager here at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. For more than 45 years, ILSR has worked to build thriving, equitable communities where power, wealth, and accountability remain in local hands. Hello, today we have something slightly different for you. Last week, ILSR hosted an event called Democratizing the Grid. And at that event ILSR Co-directors, John Farrell and Stacy Mitchell were joined by Representative Seth Berry and Senator Rick Bennett of Maine, as well as Mariel Nanasi of New Energy Economy in New Mexico, and Jean Su of the Center for Biological Diversity. This group discussed the people-powered movements around the country that are taking on the electric utility monopolies with the aim of accelerating the shift to clean energy and winning democratic community control. We're going to share a recording of that conversation with you today. So without further ado, here's ILRS's Stacy Mitchell. Stacy Mitchell: Hello everyone. Welcome today. My name is Stacy Mitchell. I'm the co-executive director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, and I'm super excited about today's event. I'm excited to welcome all of you.
