Big Ben is arguably one of the most iconic clocks in the world. Known for its distinctive chime, the great bell after which the clock is named, first rang out across London in 1859. Other than a brief time when the clock stopped in 1976, not even two World Wars have silenced the chime that tells the U.K. the correct time. However, in 2017 the legendary sound of Big Ben was silenced and a massive renovation of Westminster Tower took place. For five years, every part of the huge clock (excluding the massive bell) was disassembled and taken to workshops in the North West of England where it was restored by Keith Scobie Youngs and his team of clock experts at the Cumbria Clock Company. In this fascinating podcast, Collectability's Tania Edwards learns what it was like to restore such an important clock and what makes other turret clocks, mostly found in church and public buildings, so unique and interesting in the world of horology. In part two of this podcast, Nick Manousos answers the question, "Will there ever be a thriving American watch industry again?" Nick addresses this question within the context of the history of American watch making, and looks to a very exciting future for USA watchmakers. As Executive Director of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Nick is leading one of the oldest watch associations in the world to fulfill its mission of advancing the art and science of horology through education. Because interest in watches has exploded over the last few years, HSNY offers a wonderful resource for people at all levels of enthusiasm. In this conversation with Tania Edwards, we take a fascinating journey from the beginning of watchmaking in the USA to today, and learn why supporting HSNY is important. Nicholas Manousos has had a fascinating journey from Silicon Valley to making silicon parts for watch movements, and now leads the Horological Society of New York. In this two-part conversation with Tania Edwards, we learn how Nick's passion for watchmaking has led him along a diverse path. After watchmaking school, he experimented with 3D printing for the watch industry and in this podcast he brought along his Tourbillion 1000% -- a perfect teaching tool for a complicated movement. Nick also believes in the resurgence of the American watch industry, so much so that he started making the most difficult part of a movement in the hope of getting attention for American watchmaking. He started Fireshouse Horology which manufactured silicon balance springs, an extremely specialist skill that only a few companies, mostly in Europe and Japan excel at. At the end of this podcast, Tania asks Nick a question that many people would like the answer to: "Will there ever be a thriving American watch industry again?" Brynn Wallner represents a new and important generation of watch influencers who, in a relatively short time has made a big impact. Brynn has opened a fun and exciting world sharing images of celebrities, and particularly women showing how they wear their watches on her Instagram and website @dimepiece.co. Brynn's introduction to watches started when she was working in Sotheby's marketing department writing content for the watch department, but the experience was short-lived as the pandemic hit and with it went her job. Fortunately for the watch world, her time at Sotheby's ignited the realization that watch social media was disproportionately masculine and she set forth to change that. Most importantly, she brought humanity to the watch world meaning that she understood that the person wearing the watch, and how the watch fits into their lifestyle is just as important as the watch itself. Consequently, wrists shots of watches are accompanied by the person wearing the watch. The person wears the watch, not the watch wears the person. In addition to her social media activities, including her own podcast series “Killing Time', Brynn has smartly leveraged her watch observations into paid partnerships with, among others, eBay and The RealReal and she curates' vintage and pre-owned watch collections for sale on her own website with @foundwell. Brynn speaks candidly with Tania Edwards about her entry into the watch world, what she has learnt so far, and where she sees the industry going, especially for women's watches.

For over 14-years, Pamela Cloutier was Patek Philippe's Area Director of the Americas, Asia & Pacific Rim -- in other words she was responsible for a major portion of the world's most important watch markets. In this intimate and fascinating conversation, Pamela describes what it was like to work closely with Philippe Stern during the pivotal 1990s and 2000s. This was an important period when Philippe Stern made his mark on the modern history of Patek Philippe by introducing new movements such as the innovative small complications like the Annual Calendar and Travel Time; building a new state-of-the-art workshop in the then little-known area of Plans-les-Ouates; launching a new ad campaign that 26 years later is still running; opening the world's most important private watch museum, and growing international markets to an unprecedented level -- to name but a few important and extraordinary benchmarks. Pamela shares her memories and experiences of this exciting time including some personal details that will intrigue listeners such as the fact that even if you work for Patek -- or own the company -- you still have to wait for a watch! With over 30 years of senior management experience in the watch industry, Pamela Cloutier has a wealth of knowledge about fine watches. Prior to joining Patek Philippe, her career in the watch industry began with Dior Watches. Following her influential time at Patek Philippe Pamela became Chief Operating Officer of deGrisogono, then started Ralph Lauren's prestigious entry into the watch and jewelry world as VP International Sales & Distribution. Pamela is currently Managing Partner and oversees International Sales and Distribution at GENUS watches. In Episode 16, Eric Wind and Charlie Dunne speak with vintage watch expert and consultant to Breitling Fred Mandelbaum. The three discuss the public discovery of Scott Carpenter's Breitling Cosmonaute – the first Swiss wristwatch worn in space. Mandelbaum details his passion for Breitling's rich heritage and his experience working with the manufacturer since his initial phone call with Georges Kern back in 2017. As Mandelbaum mentions, doing a great re-release is simply not enough. The watches he is most proud of seeing developed are in fact not the re-editions but such models like the Chronomat. Mandelbaum elaborates on Georges Kern and Breitling's decision to directly involve collectors and stakeholders such as Gregory Breitling as being a monumental part of the brand's storytelling. Wind, Mandelbaum, and Dunne all shared the same impression that Carpenter's Breitling had a special presence. Mandelbaum would share his thoughts on why Scott Carpenter's Breitling Cosmonaute miraculously remained unrestored, in that it was likely a result of both Carpenter and Gregory Breitling's understanding that the timepiece was an artifact that both had no right to change. In perhaps the most poetic fashion, Mandelbaum shares his definition of a watch collector that left both Wind and Dunne speechless. We also look at Fred Perry demonising one of their own t-shirts and why people who like Autumn are mentally ill. In the letters we get responses to last week's explosive Tania Edwards episode.
After our usual catch-up, I speak to brilliant comic Tania Edwards. This was a surprisingly intense but worthwhile chat. Tania is very angry at a lot of what is happening with Covid restrictions. Unusually for a comic, she's got the research to back it up. Have a listen. Do you agree? As well as the serious stuff I rinse Starmer for being crap at autocue and there's some fun in the letters.
My guest this week is John Reardon, Patek Philippe expert and founder of Collectability.John Reardon shares his personal history -- taking us on a journey through visiting watch museums as a kid, living with friars while interning at Sotheby's, 10 years inside Patek Philippe’s family business, and why he decided he had to take the big jump to go out on his own.NOTES(02:32) American Watch and Clock Museum(05:10) Speidel(05:24) Willard House and Clock Museum(05:40) Michael Friedman // Audemars Piguet(08:47) Gambrinus(10:12) Buck Rogers(11:54) Dana Blackwell(12:14) Lewis Engineering(12:39) Daryn Schnipper(12:44) Sotheby's(21:25) Sandro Fratini(32:22) Seth Atwood(34:40) Henry Graves Supercomplication(36:52) “A Grand Complication” By Stacy Perman(44:22) Tania Edwards(46:20) “Patek Philippe in America” By John Reardon(50:48) Tiffany and Patek Philippe(58:36) Collectability**This episode is brought to by 3sixteen-- Stay tuned for our upcoming project we're working on together!**Want even more Blamo? We live in a blessed time, a truly wise era of human history in which Kylie Jenner’s cosmetics front company is somehow valued at $1 billion USD. Now, this is not a good thing, and special guest James Meadway (@meadwaj) -- an economist, writer, and former adviser to John McDonnell MP -- explains why this is just one symptom of the morass in which we find ourselves, and why recovering an oppositional style of politics is more important than ever. This episode features all of the Trash lads -- Riley (@raaleh), Hussein (@HKesvani), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), and Nate (@inthesedeserts), and including James this makes for 5 dudes in one room. As Hussein explains during the episode, this is a crucial limit. Please bear in mind that your favourite moron lads have a Patreon now. Friends, we at the Trashfuture podcast do not in any way want our jokes to become real. We don’t want Elon Musk to control the internet with a submarine like the Sons of Liberty in Metal Gear Solid 2. We don’t want Matt Hancock to parkour his way into our phones with a mandatory app. But we always knew in our hearts that the essence of conservatism is “why can’t I say the n-word.” And that latter item happened this week, as certified normal person and author Lionel Shriver wrote exactly that in the Spectator. As is to be expected, Nate (@inthesedeserts), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Olga (@rocknrolga ), and Alex Kealy @alexkealy perform a deep dive on Lionel’s own words. Shocker: they’re insane! Riley is not on this episode. He was busy skiing and handed the keys to the purple Trashfuture Lamborghini to the rest of us. You Won’t Believe What Happened Next. For pretty much as long as we've been producing Book Shambles, Josie has been recommending everyone read the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante. She even had the first book on her cape in Cosmic Superheroes. So with the My Beautiful Friend series just coming out we thought we should do a Ferrante special with Josie and two other mega fans. So joined by Sara Pascoe and Tania Edwards, they dig into her work and many other tangents. Fair warning though, spoilers abound. Support the CSN at patreon.com/bookshambles and get extended episodes of Book Shambles. Over 20 minutes extra in this week's episode!

It's episode 9 of RHEFP and Richard is tired and not in the mood, but then audibly surprised at how well his half-arsed opening monologue goes down and he's rejuvenated and full of beans from then on in. He has tales of the changes that take place in 24 years in a chip shop, plus too much information about the actresses he has gone out with and the princess that he failed to seduce. His guest, Paul Sinha, is less impressively one degree of separation from celebrity fellatio (alas not Keith Allen) and used to fancy Richard before 'The King of Edinburgh' (Three Weeks) got too fat and old. Rich chastises Jack Whitehall for obvious plagiarism, is reminded of his cruel Celebrity Mastermind defeat and takes us back to 1995 when he was looking at his immaturity in Richard Herring is All Man. CJ from Eggheads rears his ugly egghead as well and there's some unpleasant stuff about how to improve the film Love Actually with sexual assault. With stand-up from Tania Edwards. Also there's a Kenneth Kendal health and sexuality update.
