We often tell our kids that God speaks to a rare few in the Bible, yet people expect God to talk to them today. Today the Finchers share some lessons from Jonah, the prophet God spoke to. Jonah didn't like what he said. But why? Let's follow along with Jonah, his running, his reluctance, his visit to an unlikely group. A judgmental man who didn't want to be judgmental for fear of the outcome. His worst fears come true. _________ Get your Stories of Jesus for the Modern Family at dalefincher.com. The Finchers take questions from their audience starting off with this one about the differences between expectations and rules and laws. Hang onto your seats as Dale and Jonalyn tease apart these ideas and show how many good-sounding laws are breaking the backs of good people. The question from a listener we cover in this episode: “Is making a rule or law that is morally good ever wrong? Is there a distinction when having expectations, rules and laws in different spaces? i.e. between family or community groups, such as schools or clubs or neighborhoods and larger communities such as countries? And then of course, God.” Have your own question? Send it to hello@dalefincher.com. I welcome a guest host Becca Hope to the show, and she interviews me about my new release, What I Would Tell You. We had so much fun chatting about the book, what the message of the story is, and my trip to Greece to research the novel. It's a fabulous place to travel, and I learned so much while I was there. What I Would Tell You by Liz TolsmaDetermined to resist the invading Nazis, a Greek Jewish woman's greatest dream has become her worst nightmare, and now she faces an impossible choice whose consequences echo across the generations. 1941—The pounding of Nazi boots on the streets of Salonika, Greece, reverberates in Mathilda Nissim's ears, shaking her large community of Sephardic Jews to its core and altering her life forever. If only her people would rise up and resist their captors. At great risk to herself and those around her, she uses the small newspaper she publishes to call them to action, all to no avail. Her husband encourages her to trust God to watch over them, but God has once again deserted His people. Amid the chaos, Mathilda discovers she's expecting a longed-for child. Still, nothing stops the occupiers' noose from tightening around their necks, and she may have to resort to desperate measures to ensure her daughter's survival. 2019—College student Tessa Payton and her cousin take a popular DNA heritage test only to discover they don't share any common ancestors. In fact, the test reveals Tessa is a Greek Sephardic Jew. This revelation threatens her tenuous faith. Always the overlooked child in her family, she empties her savings account and jets off on a journey to Greece to discover where she belongs and which God demands her allegiance. The enchanting curator at the Jewish museum guides her as she navigates life in Thessaloniki, helps with her genealogical research, and loans her a fascinating journal written by a Jewish woman during WWII. Tessa's search, however, may open old wounds and uncover long-hidden secrets that could fracture her family forever and leave her with more questions than when she started. Based in part on true accounts of Jews in Salonika, Greece, What I Would Tell You traces two women's journeys, delving into what faith looks like and where it leads us as they navigate difficult circumstances and impossible choices that have ripple effects across the years.Get your copy of What I Would Tell You by Liz TolsmaA little bit more about Liz Tolsma:I am so blessed that I get to work at my dream job every day. There's no one quite like Jonalyn Fincher. The New England water colorist, follower of Jesus, and Second Amendment advocate is also an author, a popular public speaker, a mother, and wife. She can skin an elk, defend her kids from bears, and knock out a simple and elegant greeting card line, and write about some of the most interesting and compelling controversial topics in America. And she listens carefully and observes. It's part of what makes her a great artist. For a long time, Jonalyn ran a non-profit with her husband, Dale. They wrote books and did public speaking all around the country to large and small audiences. They ran several blogs. One day, she began painting seriously. After years of discipline, sacrifice of everyone in her family, and dedicated hard, smart, careful work, she has a line of impressive water color greeting cards selling in stores. She also does commissions for pieces. Each one is a gripping, elegant study of some aspect of our world. And, as you'll see, she wants the legal right to carry a gun for self-defense. She's humble, but not shy about it. Though she has had mountain lion, bear, moose and elk on her property, including bear cubs who have snuck up on her children, she wants the legal right to carry a firearm for self-defense in the city. Some of the most dangerous parts of creation are found there, as well. Though this need for effective self-defense, she emphasizes, is a cause for sadness, not celebration.
