This week, we're turning our attention to the presidential race. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris seem to have found their message on guns and are sticking to it. Assassination attempts, a major school shooting, and the race tightening haven't moved voters. Neither has any of that moved the candidates themselves. So, we've got Bearing Arms editor Cam Edwards back on the show to look at where everything has landed. He agreed there's little reason to think the campaigns are going to change course on message or intensity at this point. But he argued both sides are taking a flawed approach. Cam said Trump ought to do more to try and entice gun owners to turn out for him rather than just talking about how he doesn't think they will show up. On the other hand, he argued Harris trying to parry claims she'll take Americans' guns by emphasizing her own gun ownership felt inauthentic and didn't do enough to counteract some of the farther left positions she's staked out on guns in the past. Special Guest: Cam Edwards.

This week, we've got one of the nation's premier political analysts on the show. Steve Hayes, co-founder of The Dispatch, joined us to discuss the state of the 2024 gun debate. He gave his take on the path Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have taken in their respective campaigns. Then he turned to how the recent mass shooting at a Georgia High School might shake up those positions. Hayes noted guns have not been a top priority for voters thus far in the election. He said that was likely because there haven't been a lot of high-profile shootings this year. He argued that could change because of the new attention the Georgia shooting will bring to the issue, but he wasn't sure if it would reach the level of intense media coverage that's necessary to push either candidate one way or the other. Special Guest: Steve Hayes.

Arms Around America

Recorded live inside UCLA's Royce Hall, the audio drama at the center of this episode takes place in southern California the immediate aftermath of the 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde TX. Tiffany struggles to balance the need to protect her young children with the urgency of finishing her doctoral dissertation, which is itself related to school shootings. After the performance, actors Natalie Camunas and Sola Bamis are joined by guests Marine Corps veteran Tess Banko and Army veteran Robert Ham to discuss the implications, for parents and veterans in particular, of school shootings becoming commonplace. "Tiffany" is based on the oral history of retired Air Force Captain Jessica Huerta. Jessica, who is also a PhD student in Sociology, joins the discussion as well. The conversation unearths provocative questions about cultures of hyper-masculinity, and the need to balance our freedoms and responsibilities regarding guns. Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction 01:56 - Audio drama: "Tiffany" 10:43 - Discussion with Tess, Robert, and Jessica 23:16 - Conclusion 25:23 - Thank you's and credits   Guest Bios: Jessica Huerta enlisted in the Air Force shortly after 9/11. Often she was the only woman in airfield-communications teams, among leaders in security forces, as the wing equal opportunity adviser, and as a public affairs officer. As a citizen-airman, a sociology doctoral candidate at UCLA, and a parent, she became aware of the discrimination fathers face when they seek deep emotional connections with their families and greater involvement in childcare. Jessica believes research to demonstrate the strategies fathers use to defy rigid gender rules could greatly improve the lives of men, their partners and their children across our military, veteran and civilian communities.   Tess Barragan Banko, MSW/MPA, a Marine Corps veteran, serves as the U.S.VETS West Los Angeles project director and The Veterans Collective community development director. A survivor of post-traumatic stress disorder and military sexual trauma, Banko deeply identifies with fellow veterans and families on their paths to recovery, wellness and empowerment, and is honored to serve the community on behalf of her military and veteran sisters, brothers and their families.    Robert Ham is a 4x Emmy winning director/writer, a decorated Army Combat Veteran and an alumni of the USC School of Cinematic Arts MFA program. During his time in the military he served a combat tour to Afghanistan in '09-10 and then would deploy to over a dozen areas in the Pacific. The jumping-off point for the converstion is Dan Froot & Company's short audio drama "Rich & Dave," based on the brothers' oral history. Rich and Dave struggle with the emotional toll of gun violence in their community, managing family responsibilities while charting a path away from troubled pasts. The drama highlights their familial bond, the pressures of their environment, and the pervasive presence of guns, even when not visible. Following the audio play, Dan discusses the broader entanglements of gun violence, race, and the prison-industrial complex with guests Justin Alston, Refujio Rodriguez, and Bryonn Bain. They emphasize the importance of empathy, understanding systemic racism, the need for community resources to address the root causes of violence, and the case for prison abolition. Trey Kay knows both sides of America's partisan divide intimately. He was born and raised  in a conservative family in Charleston, West Virginia. As a young man he moved to New York City, where he later became a producer on the arts and culture program Studio 360, at WNYC. These days, Trey splits his time between New York and West Virginia to make Us & Them, an award-winning  narrative podcast about America's culture wars, in partnership with West Virginia Public Broadcasting. On Us & Them, Trey treats people with respect, he listens carefully to their point of view whether he agrees or not, and he facilitates conversations that might not otherwise happen. A guiding value is empathy – no matter who the interviewee happens to be.  This episode was originally published in May 2023. EPISODES OF US AND THEM EXCERPTED IN THIS EPISODE, with photos and additional contextThe Gun DivideCritical Race TheoryPlease Pass the PoliticsSubscribe to Us & Them on your podcast player HOW TO RATE AND REVIEW MAKING PEACE VISIBLEIn Apple Podcasts on iPhone Tap on the show name (Making Peace Visible) to navigate to the main podcast pageScroll down to the "Ratings and Reviews" sectionTo leave a rating only, tap on the starsTo leave a review, tap "Write a Review" In Spotify(Note: Spotify ratings are currently only available on mobile.)Tap on the show name (Making Peace Visible) to navigate to the main podcast pageTap on the star icon under the podcast description to rate the show In Podcast Addict(Note: you may need to sign in before leaving a review.)From the episode page: On the top left above the show description, click "Post review."From the main podcast pageTap "Reviews" on the top left.On the Reviews page,  tap the icon of a pen and paper in the top right corner of the screen. ABOUT THE SHOWMaking Peace Visible is a project of War Stories Peace Stories. Welcome to Oaktober Fest, our annual celebration of spooky season lasting the entire month of October! This episode highlights the tragic death of Yoshihiro Hattori, a 16-year-old Japanese student on an exchange program to the United States.    When "Yoshi" and his friend and fellow student Webb Haymaker knocked on the door of a house where they believed a Halloween Party to be held, they were met with gunfire, killing Yoshi and leaving Webb with a lifetime of emotional scars.    After the Yoshi's untimely death, two families, forever linked through tragedy, would work together to lead a massive campaign to change America's gun laws.     Ultimately, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was passed, mandating background checks on gun buyers and a five-day waiting period on all purchases.    Give: Yoshi Hattori Memorial Scholarship (afsusa.org) Sources: Mascia, J. Merely defining gun violence is difficult, and coming to agreement on what to do about it often seems near-impossible in the United States. But people on all sides of the debate agree that they want to feel safe, even if they have different ideas of how to achieve security. What will it take to truly listen to each other and make progress on this issue? U.S. Representative Lucy McBath, advocate John Feinblatt, Cato Institute legal scholar Clark Neily and sociologist Jennifer Carlson come together at the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival to share their unique perspectives and expertise on fighting gun violence. Journalist and public radio host Jenn White moderates the discussion.

He's an extremely knowledgeable resource when it comes to understanding the history of the United States' obsession with gun culture.
