Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.232 Will Maxen (b. Waterbury, CT) is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Houston, Texas, who works primarily in the language of painting. His work blends personal and historical imagery into partially abstracted scenes that explore themes of memory and belonging, navigating both literal and metaphorical spaces. The work delves into the dislocation of identity within these spaces, representing existence as something that teeters on the edge of legibility. This juxtaposition breaks the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible while the painted figures evoke vulnerability, adding a human element to the dialogue. Maxen received his BA in Illustration from Central Connecticut State University, and an MFA in Art Studio at the University of California, Davis. He has had solo exhibitions at Residency Art Gallery, Los Angeles (Felix Art Fair); and UTA Art Space, New York. His work has been featured in group shows at Fridman Gallery, New York; Canepa Selling Gallery, Los Angeles, Marrow Gallery, San Francisco; Chili Art Projects, London. Maxens work is included in the permanent collections of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, Davis, CA; The Art Galleries at Black Studies, Austin, TX; and the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection. Maxen has been a resident at Silver Art Projects, New York; a recipient of The New Jewish Culture Fellowship; and an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Louisiana State University. One of the best parts of this podcast is meeting the incredible people behind the art and the music that brings us together. Today's episode brings a fun and joyful conversation with Caroline Herbster and Chase Lynch of Rising Tide Art Studio. We had the pleasure of meeting Caroline and Chase at the Chucktown Flowdown aka the Artist Vendor Market/Fair in Charleston, SC this past December. Caroline is the maker behind the live artwork at many of our favorite concerts (like Goose, Billy Strings, Phish ... just to name a few). Her artwork is an extension of the music and the energy at the concerts she attends, and WOW, it's like magic. Our conversation flows through her childhood as an avid music goer (thankful for wonderful parents bringing their kids to shows!), her teaching background and post-pandemic era desire to dive into creating artwork. We loved hearing Caroline and Chase's story about how Rising Tide has impacted the incredible community within music and art, and where they're going in the future (hint hint- it's where the music takes them....). We love Caroline and Chase's heart for their fellow artists and the incredibly supportive community that's been built - and the wonderful official Goose management team that's given fan art a place to grow! Why should you travel to these 5 islands? Jeff says, "Some of them are not visited at all. Some of them are overly visited. They're all near each other, so it makes for a nice little grouping. I used St. Martin as a base. St. Martin is known as the friendly island and you can do daily flights to each of the other islands." Jeff recommends an itinerary that includes visiting five of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, known as the British, Dutch, and French West Indies. His suggested itinerary includes the following islands: St. Martin (French and Dutch) Use St. Martin as a base for island hopping. Stay at the Azure Hotel and Art Studio on Simpson Bay Beach. Explore both the Dutch side (Philipsburg) and the French side (Marigot). Visit historical forts like Fort Amsterdam and Fort St. Louis.
