A nice mention for the podcast recently on Crime World inspired me to go back to the subject of the Animal Gang. Seperating fact from folklore, just who made up the so-called Animal Gang of 1930s and 1940s Dublin. Was there one gang, or does the term mean something much broader? What was the relationship between the Animal Gang and the turbulent politics of the time. As far as careers go, crime journalism is up there with one of the most, let's say, ‘unique'. Its not for the faint hearted – you're dealing with dangerous people who do terrible things, and your job is to make as big an audience as possible aware of the crimes they commit. So who'd want to do a job like that? Well, Nicola Tallant for one. Nicola is one of Ireland's best-known crime journalists. After years writing about crime, she then started talking about it on a podcast she created called Crime World – which is now one of the most-listened to podcasts in the country. She also does live stage shows, writes a book every year and regularly appears in the media. In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Nicola and I talk about why she is so fascinated by crime journalism and what and drives her to work so hard at it. We also talk open and honestly about those characters we all seem to find so compelling, like Christy and Daniel kinihan, Gerry the monk hutch, and Conor McGregor. And there are also quite a few very funny moments. If you'd like to catch Nicola at her next live event, follow this link https://www.kilkennylawfestival.com/speakers/nicola-tallantCOMEDY - Rory MclIroy's phone is hopping after his big win at The Masters.Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand

Liliane Landor talks about the challenges of budget cuts and her concerns for the station's future, while World Service listeners say what the World Service means to them. “In ordinary language, a crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority.[1] The term crime does not, in modern criminal law, have any simple and universally accepted definition,[2] though statutory definitions have been provided for certain purposes.[3] The most popular view is that crime is a category created by law; in other words, something is a crime if declared as such by the relevant and applicable law.[2] One proposed definition is that a crime or offence (or criminal offence) is an act harmful not only to some individual but also to a community, society, or the state ("a public wrong"). Such acts are forbidden and punishable by law.[1][4]” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

The 'Dead Zoo' is the name the famous Dublin ‘wits' came up with for the Natural History Museum in the capital. The quirky Victorian-era institution is packed with stuffed exotic animals from around the world – a moose, a hippo, a giraffe, a rhinoceros and a lot more. The 'Dead Zoo Gang' is the name the Sunday World gave the Irish criminals who started buying or stealing rhino horns all over the world. From the Rockies in Denver, Colorado, to auction rooms in Sydney, Australia, the gang spent more than a decade supplying the illegal trade in rhino horns. With buyers in China and Vietnam willing to spend €20,000 and more per kilo, the Irish mob found a way to go big-game hunting without using guns. This is the story, written by Eamon Dillon, of the 'Dead Zoo Gang' and one of the world's most bizarre crime sprees.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleagues Chris Baldwin of the WAAR Room and Malissa Smith of Girlboxing on the WAAR Room. A video of this discussion has also been posted on the WAAR Sports YouTube page. While many are still discussing Tyson Fury's defense of his WBC heavyweight belt, less attention is being paid, especially in the boxing media, to the man whom he said is his advisor, Daniel Kinahan. According to promoter Bob Arum, Kinahan is also an advisor to the unbeaten WBO welterweight champ Terence Crawford, the unbeaten and undisputed 140-pound champ Josh Taylor, and WBO super featherweight champ Jamel Herring. Kinahan was co-founder of what is now the management company MTK Global, although officially it is claimed that he is no longer formally a part of it. Among MTK Global's many dozens of fighters is the unbeaten WBO middleweight champ Savannah Marshall, who appears headed to a showdown next year with two-division unbeaten champion Claressa Shields. So who is this boxing powerbroker, Daniel Kinahan? According to the High Court of Ireland, he is a senior figure in organized crime on a global scale and head of the Kinahan organized crime group. Kinahan is now based in Dubai. To find out more about Kinahan, including his role in boxing, we spoke with one of the world's leading authorities on the crime world and especially Irish organized crime, Nicola Tallant. She is the Investigations Editor for the Sunday World of Ireland, hosts and produces the Crime World podcast, and is author of the wonderful new book, "Clash of the Clans: The Rise of the Irish Narcos and Boxing's Dirty Secret". When you've got Ireland's top crime journalist on the podcast, you've got to be on your best behaviour. Not that I've done anything wrong or anything, the money was just resting in my account, but anyway… Nicola Tallant has been on my podcast hitlist (pun intended) for quite some time - not only has her crime coverage for the Sunday World has helped that paper become one of the most read Sunday newspapers in the country, but her two podcasts - Crime World and The Witness - are consistently riding high in the Apple podcast charts. Nicola really knows her stuff and she's so good at what she does, I wanted to meet her and find out about some of the criminals she has met, what got her in to crime journalism, and what actually drives her to do such a dangerous job every day. In this week's comedy sketch, nightclubs are going to be opening up again very soon, which is all very exciting. But be careful, maybe we shouldn't be expecting the exact same experience as before, there could be some concerning changes.. Enjoy!
