The British government has taken steps to halt the prosecution of soldiers responsible for the deaths of civilians in Northern Ireland, most of whom had no connection to paramilitary activities. These killings were part of a ruthless dirty war that commenced in 1970 when Brigadier Frank Kitson, a counter-insurgency specialist, was sent to Northern Ireland. Kitson had spent decades in Britain's colonies refining old, and developing new, techniques which he applied in Northern Ireland. He became the architect of a clandestine war, waged against Nationalists while ignoring Loyalist atrocities. Kitson and his colleagues were responsible for: - The establishment of the clandestine Military Reaction Force (MRF) which carried out assassinations on the streets of Belfast of suspected IRA members; - They unleashed the most violent elements of the Parachute Regiment [1 Para] to terrorise Nationalist communities which, they adjudged, were providing support for the Official and Provisional IRA; - Spreading black propaganda designed to undermine Republican but not Loyalist paramilitary groups; - Deployed psychological warfare techniques, involving the torture of internees; - Sent Kitson's 'Private Army' - Support Company of 1 Para - to Derry where they perpetrated the Bloody Sunday massacre. The British Widgery and Saville inquiries did not hold Kitson and his elite troops accountable for Bloody Sunday. Kitson's Irish War lays bare the evidence they discounted: Kitson's role in the events leading up to and surrounding that massacre; evidence from a deserter from 1 Para who joined the IRA; a deceitful MI5 agent; a courageous whistle blower whom the British state tried to discredit, and much more, all of which points to a motive for the attack on the Bogside. CONTENTThe guest today is author Henry Hemming and on this podcast we will be discussing his book “4 Shots In The Night" a true story of espionage, murder and justice during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It centres round the brutal killing on 26th May, 1986 of British agent Frank Hegarty who infiltrated PIRA and also involves Martin McGuinness, terrorist turned politician and the notorious IRA member and British agent Freddie Scappaticci who, over a decade after the murder, decided to talk to the media about what happened that night. This started a search for truth which revealed how a handful of British agents were able to infiltrate the Provisional IRA, at great personal cost. It is a period described by Henry as “... by a country mile, the least understood conflict in recent British history, as well as the bloodiest and longest.” Henry's book choice on Desert Islands Dits is "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. *A warning, today's episode contains details of domestic violence which listeners may find upsetting* Terrorist, garda killer and prolific wife beater, Pearse McAuley's long litany of convictions have established him as one of Ireland's most dangerous criminals for over 30 years. The Northern Irish para-military figure made the headlines in the early 1990s for a daring escape from an English prison, but his crimes against the State, in the shooting of a garda in 1996, would wrap his name in infamy among Irish criminal history. McAuley was part of a team that murdered Detective Garda Jerry McCabe. The garda was shot at point-blank range by an AK-47 in an attack by the Provisional IRA on June 7, 1996, outside Adare Post Office. Garda McCabe's colleague, Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan, was seriously injured in the attack. The Dail is in recess, and that means no Friday wrap today. Instead, we're going to bring you a conversation that was originally published on the feed of our sister podcast In the News, hosted by Bernice Harrison, all about a story that gripped 1980s Ireland. You can subscribe to In the News for free here.On December 16th, 1983, after 23 days in captivity, kidnapped supermarket executive Don Tidey was rescued. He had been taken by members of the Provisional IRA posing as gardaí while driving his daughter to school in Dublin. With the whole country transfixed by the kidnapping, Garda intelligence tracked the culprits and their victim down to Derrada Wood outside Ballinamore in Co Leitrim. And while the release of Tidey safe and well was a success, the day was shrouded in tragedy because during the rescue his captors shot dead Private Patrick Kelly and recruit Garda Gary Sheehan. The murders shocked the country and no one has been brought to justice for them. Most of the kidnappers got clean away. While the event has been the subject of much media attention over the years, Tidey has never spoken about it until now. This year he talked to Tommy Conlon and Ronan McGreevy for their new book, The Kidnapping, A Hostage, a Desperate Manhunt and a Bloody Rescue. They talk to In the News about the events in 1983 and the aftermath. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In 1984, the Conservative Party, lead by the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, gathered in the seaside town of Brighton for their annual conference. In the early hours of October 12th a bomb ripped through the Grand Hotel where Thatcher and several other conservative leaders were staying. The following day the Provisional IRA would claim responsibility for the attack. This triggered one of the largest manhunts in history. Dem Vinyl Boyz are back this week we're diving into one of the most prolific debut albums that tackles political issues with undeniable conviction, Rage Against The Machine. These guys created this album with a purpose, displaying a photo of the self-immolation of Thích Quảng Đức, a vietnamese monk, on the album cover. He was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm's administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion and the international attention this photo gained persuaded U.S. President John F. Kennedy to withdraw support for Diệm's government. The songs on Rage Against the Machine all feature political messages with activists such as Provisional IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands and Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton are listed in the "Thanks For Inspiration" section. Through this album's success, it remains an essential call to activism and a necessary lesson on how to withstand the opposition. Aside from the album's obvious political themes, the music itself defies the way "normal" albums would be released and offers a genre-bending experience that makes it difficult to categorize as one specific thing. Throwing mixes of rock, funk, and rap throughout the album, it is recognized as one of the first albums to successfully merge the seemingly contrasting sounds of rap and heavy metal. The album peaked at number 1 on the US Billboard Heatseekers chart and number 45 on the US Billboard 200 and has gone on to achieve triple platinum sales certification in the US.
