A simple, kind and meaningful act can have a powerful ripple effect, like giving a haircut to someone in need. Not only does it create doorways to connection. It can open up entire portals that break the typical pattern of how we interact with the community around us. Through one simple compassionate act, we can create moments that matter - moments that can start to break through layers of hardship and make people feel seen after feeling invisible. How did the decision to give a haircut become a powerful movement for kindness and a doorway for a deeper connection? How can we show up differently in our own communities? In this episode, we're joined by the founder of #DoSomethingForNothing, Joshua Coombes. He shares how one haircut changed everything, and the powerful movement he built from it. Guest Bio Joshua Coombes is a British hairstylist and founder of #DoSomethingForNothing, a movement encouraging people to connect their skills and time to those who need it. In 2015, Joshua Coombes, a British hairstylist, took his scissors to the street to cut the hair of the homeless community in a story that is as much about hope and humanity as it is about hair. He's now the architect of the international Do Something for Nothing movement, which our regular contributing photography mentor Valérie Jardin has photographed at work in Paris and New York. Today, both Josh and Valérie share their experiences of a project that is as philanthropic as it is photographic. Also today, the mailbag is back with letters about the scale of Mother Nature, a walk along the Norwegian coastline and what does it actually look like when you stand within an electricity pylon and look up. Once, while wandering the bustling streets of London, I found myself sharing a heartwarming conversation with a homeless man. This chance encounter was the spark that ignited a global movement of kindness, transforming lives one haircut at a time; a movement that came to be known as "Do Something For Nothing". Join me as I sit down with the man behind this movement, Joshua Coombes, to explore how his journey began and how it has grown into a wave of kindness that continues to inspire change worldwide. Navigating the world of social media, I learned about the power of intention and the importance of staying true to my original motivations. I've seen firsthand how a simple act of being present can create ripples of positivity that touch lives in unexpected ways. Joshua and I discuss our experiences with this, focusing on the value of shared values and compassion in creating meaningful connections. We also delve into the discussions from the heart, taking precedence over political discourse or division, enabling us to connect authentically with those in our daily lives. Venturing into the fascinating world of plant medicines, we discuss their sacredness, their potential for healing, and the importance of honoring their indigenous roots. We caution against the exploitation of such powerful medicines, while acknowledging the transformative experiences they can unlock. This episode is a testament to the power of human connection, compassion, and the belief that each one of us holds within us the potential to enact change, no matter how small. For the last 7 years Joshua Coombes has been a man on a mission. In 2015, while working at a London hair salon and feeling a little disillusioned, he took to the streets with his scissors to build relationships and offer haircuts to men and women experiencing homelessness in the capital. He began posting transformative images on social media to amplify the voices of those he met. The stories that accompanied these photos resonated, and others began to get involved in their own way.Do Something for Nothing was born – a movement that encourages people to connect their skills and time to those who need them.Joshua didn't want to set up a big charity, or focus on making a “huge impact” or “changing the world”. Instead he wanted to focus on helping the person right in front of him; the person many of us walk past every day.Joshua felt his energy was better spent getting to know a few people better, telling their stories and letting that ripple out. Nick Cave called it “a simple, big-hearted and world-shaking idea”.What can each of us give that we have in abundance that can change people's lives, even in a small way. This is one of my favorite episodes personally so far. I really love doing this podcast, guys! To be able to sit down with Joshua Coombes was just so cool. He's someone who I admire very much and also who Ive tried to emulate in some ways. In this episode he shares about how the awareness of someone else and the simplicity of hearing about their life and giving them a haircut brought something out in him that was dormant before. We talk of the importance of having that awareness of one another and just how we can be there for one another. We are not meant to be alone or on our own. We are one another. We're made of the same stuff. I could've kept it going for much longer. His book is called Do Something For Nothing and I highly recommend it. You can find him on Instagram @joshuacoombes to follow more of his life's work. He's such a cool guy and I really hope this episode gives you something to think about in your own life. Why are you here and what do you have to offer? We all have a great purpose in each other's lives and the more comfortable I've become with who I am, the closer I have come to realizing and acting on my purpose. Hope you enjoy!Unexpectedly Yours,NeeleyA special thank you to Joseph Haggard for the music.Find me on Instagram @neeleyreed

It started with one haircut."One evening in the spring of 2015, I was on my way to a friend's house after work. I didn't make it. I walked past a man who was homeless at the time. I would often stop to speak with him ... but this time was different ... I remembered that I had my tools in my backpack and asked if he'd like his hair cut. In the hour that followed, he told me his story. The next time we met, he introduced me to some of his friends. Before long I was heading out whenever I could, giving haircuts throughout the streets of London." That's an excerpt from the book "Do Something For Nothing" by Joshua Coombes. In this episode of Watching America, Coombes talks about the impact a haircut and a conversation can make. In 2015, Joshua Coombes was walking home from his hairdressing salon in London when he stopped to talk to a homeless man and ended up giving him a haircut on the street that would change Joshua's life. Joshua has since gone on to take that very simple idea of giving a homeless person a little bit of free help and turned it into a movement #DoSomethingForNothing and has recently written a book about how this little act of selfless generosity can help change lives. Gav & Joshua have a (rather sweary) chat about the simplicity and power of this idea, the complex issue of homelessness and how we are just a few poor choices from ending up on the receiving end of one of his haircuts. This is a powerful story told by a passionate and charismatic maverick hairdresser and activist. Please do have a listen, leave a review and subscribe. Thank you Please buy and read Joshua's book "Do Something for Nothing" and join the movement

Joshua Coombes is the founder of the #DoSomethingForNothing movement, that encourages people to contribute their skills, time or simple acts of kindness to people who need it most. This is something that Joshua himself, has been doing for many years now. In 2015, quite by chance, Joshua met a man who was living on the streets, and they shared a long and meaningful conversation. As a professional hair stylist, Josh happened to have his scissors and clippers with him and on the spur of the moment, offered him a haircut. That moment transformed Joshua's life in the most monumental way. This one moment of connection on the streets of London to the streets of the world, sparked a movement and Joshua has continued to offer his time and skills to people living on the streets across the globe. This isn't about Josh though, and he would be the first to say so. It's about the incredible stories of human connection that he shares with each individual. By sharing these transformational stories through social media and now through his beautiful book Do Something For Nothing, Joshua's aim is to destigmatise the issue of homelessness and advocate for social change. In this chat, Josh shares some of the poignant stories he has encountered along the way and the lessons he has taken away from them. It's a moving discussion, delving into the themes of homelessness, love, inequality, shame and resilience. His work is truly inspiring and takes him around the world, amplifying the voices of some of life's forgotten people. Josh is an incredibly humble, down to earth human, doing wonderful things for the global community. You can find Josh and take in some of his incredible work @joshuacoombes and @dosomethingfornothing and www.dosomethingfornothing.org If you liked this ep, please share it with your friends and follow us @thecuriouslifepodcast. This week Valérie shares a new conversation with her good friend Joshua Coombes, founder of #DoSomethingForNothing. Many of you are familiar with Josh and his work, as well as the photo documentary project I did on the streets of NYC and Paris a few years ago. We published two ebooks together as a way to support Josh's work. Today, Josh has a new book titled Do Something For Nothing: Seeing Beneath the surface of homelessness, through the simple act of a haircut.
We all know how uplifting a trip to the hairdresser or barber can be, but it's often an experience that's out of reach for those living rough. Joshua Coombes is a hairdresser by trade, whose client list for the past few years has exclusively been the homeless.

Joshua Coombes has a simple mantra 'Do Something For Nothing' The former hairdresser spoke to Alison Curtis on Weekend Breakfast from his home in London. He has been all around the world cutting hair for people who are homeless. Joshua says, "I run into the nearest café or pub and ask, ‘Can I borrow a chair?' They say ‘why?' and when I tell them, they often offer water and other items enthusiastically. "It's getting the community together. I am not raising awareness I am raising compassion - the reasons people end up without a home are incredibly complex." His experiences have now been captured in a book titled 'Do Something For Nothing' and he spoke to Weekend Breakfast all about his experience. You may have heard me speak about Joshua Coombes in #yaysofourlives a few days ago and I'm so thrilled to say not only has his book Do Something for Nothing launched in Australia this week, he's also joined us on the show for today's episode. If you missed my intro on Monday, Joshua is a British hairdresser who took his skill onto the streets to give free haircuts to the homeless and, together with his passion and skill for storytelling, has created a global movement of kindness, connection and humanity. His new book shares stories as well as before and after images of people he's met from all over the world showing the confidence, hope and joy he brings them from taking a moment to connect. For people who often feel invisible and misunderstood in society, he's shining such an important light on homelessness and helping break down the stigma it's still surrounded by. He's also encouraging us all to do something for nothing – for him, it's by giving free haircuts but he insists that we all have a skill or talent we can share for free with others. I found him so fascinating and his stories even more captivating! Note: you'll notice the audio changes about half way through when his airpods died with a bit of clicking just beforehand, so apologies for the glitches, but we still managed to have an amazing conversation across the globe so I'm pretty chuffed with that. I hope he makes you smile as much as he did for me! BUY JOSHUA'S NEW BOOK HERE + Follow Joshua here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here

For people who often feel invisible and misunderstood in society, he’s shining such an important light on homelessness and helping break down the stigma it’s still surrounded by. He’s also encouraging us all to do something for nothing – for him, it’s by giving free haircuts but he insists that we all have a skill or talent we can share for free with others. I found him so fascinating and his stories even more captivating! Note: you’ll notice the audio changes about half way through when his airpods died with a bit of clicking just beforehand, so apologies for the glitches, but we still managed to have an amazing conversation across the globe so I’m pretty chuffed with that. I hope he makes you smile as much as he did for me!BUY JOSHUA'S NEW BOOK HERE+ Follow Joshua here+ Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah+ Join our Facebook community here
In conversation with Britt James, founder of Philly Unknown In 2015, British hairstylist Joshua Coombes hit the streets of London with a pair of scissors and an extraordinary idea-that giving free haircuts to those who are experiencing homelessness could do more than simply change their outward appearances. He began posting their photos before and after their haircut and personal stories on Instagram in an effort to remove the stigmas many associate with homelessness. Through this mission's worldwide attention and success he founded the #DoSomethingForNothing movement, which seeks to inspire people to donate their skills and time to those in need. Full of never-before-seen photos and writing, Coombes's book urges us to find our shared humanity through universal themes of acceptance, love, and perseverance. Books available through the Joseph Fox Bookshop (recorded 5/30/2021)
In this episode we meet with one of the greatest do-gooders out there, Joshua Coombes. We dive deep into the stereotypes of homelessness and its connection with drug addiction as well as the ongoing debate about organisations ‘enabling' homelessness through handing out free essentials. Joshua also talks about his new book consisting of different stories from the streets called 'Do Something For Nothing'.
It started with one haircut. “One evening in the spring of 2015, I was on my way to a friend’s house after work. I didn’t make it. I walked past a man who was homeless at the time. I would often stop to speak with him … but this time was different … I remembered that I had my tools in my backpack and asked if he’d like his hair cut. In the hour that followed, he told me his story. The next time we met, he introduced me to some of his friends. Before long I was heading out whenever I could, giving haircuts throughout the streets of London.” That’s an excerpt from the book “Do Something For Nothing” by Joshua Coombes. Today on Watching America, we hear from Coombes about the impact a haircut and a conversation can make. This episode is another absolute treat. This week's guest is ‘Hairdresser to the Homeless,' Joshua Coombes. After years of living parallel lives working to destigmatize and unpick the stereotypes around some of the most marginalised of society, it's been a long time coming that we record this episode together. Josh started a hashtag and global movement called Do Something for Nothing after he began cutting hair for people living on the street and sharing before-and-after photos on Instagram, using them as a vehicle to share people's stories. We talk about shame, trust, patience and pain and some of the amazing people he has met on the street over the years. We also share the project we've been working on together over the last few months. It's called People of the Pandemic and it's a global portrait series amplifying the stories of the every day heroes getting us through COVID-19. It's something we truly believe in to set new foundations for the future, and we're very happy to share it with you! This episode is a collection of some of our learnings both individually and together over the last 5 years. It's a really important and personal one to me, so I hope you enjoy it. Loved this conversation with Joshua Coombes around how I think about Giving in a 2019 world, especially in the non-profit world. I wrote Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook to explain this side of marketing, because most people that are offering to give, are really trying to take and most are not even aware of the vulnerability of their behavior. Let me know your thoughts & your favorite moment from this podcast by tweeting @garyvee. ;) xoxo

Joshua Coombes is the founder of the movement #DoSomethingForNothing. Josh is a British hair stylist who began offering haircuts to people he met on the streets experiencing homelessness. He found that listening to people’s stories and connecting through a haircut, along with showing people a photo of themselves before & after, made a far bigger impact than he ever could have imagined. He’s now amplifying his mission by collaborating with brands such as TOMS and touring an art exhibit Light Noise Art around the globe to encourage all of us to Do Something For Nothing in our own way. This is We Are Photographers with Joshua Coombes and this is his story.
This episode is with Scott Harrison, founder of Charity:Water and Joshua Coombes, founder of Do Something For Nothing. I had the best time getting to know two amazing entrepreneurs last week when I hosted a master class called "Passion to Purpose" at the WeWork Creator Awards in London. Scott has the most interesting story and has helped millions get access to clean water. Joshua is probably best known for the haircuts he offers to homeless people all over the world and whose stories he shares shares their stories to encourage people to connect with others. These two guys essentially created their own opportunities in social entrepreneurialism using cultural norms like water and grooming to serve marginalised communities. I learned a lot and I hope you find this episode as inspiring as I did. Thank you to WeWork for having me host this. If you're an entrepreneur, you're going to want to know more about the Creator Awards pitch competition - check out the WeWork London Creator recap to learn more. In the episode I mention the WeWork London Economic Impact Report which has a ton of interesting stats surrounding entrepreneurs. Stay up to date with WeWork on IG and Twitter.
