“It's built off of that design for ordinary experience where it's all about the simple moments getting people to slow down a little bit. Look out and see the sun set, see the sun rise, see the moon rise. That was something we never really noticed before living in the desert.” We're in great company with Sara and Rich Combs, Co-Founders and Owners of The Joshua Tree House, where they create spaces designed and immersed in awe inspiring natural locations such as Joshua Tree, CA and Tucson, AZ. After leaving their full time jobs to pursue freelance design in 2013, Sarah and Rich set off on a road trip from San Francisco to New York that changed their lives. Realizing throughout their travels that they had to sacrifice either design or nature in their accommodations, they set out in 2015 to create spaces that celebrate both. In this episode, Sara and Rich passionately share how the difficulties of the past couple of years in this world have created an even greater need for nature's power to heal, and how they feel so grateful to be able to offer that time and space to reflect and reset for guests. Top Takeaways [1:25] From high school sweethearts to making the desert their home, how Sara and Rich met and the welcome addition they've recently brought into their lives today. [3:30] A desire for a change of scenery from their computer screens turned a cross country road trip into “a creative retreat from the city.” [7:20] Unbeknownst to them as 3rd generation innkeepers, the Combs family has hospitality in their blood. [9:10] The intention behind Flora's name and what Sara and Rich hope for in raising their daughter surrounded by nature. [10:55] With each of their three properties, Sara and Rich built up their confidence in renovations along the way. [16:40] In designing and decorating JTH spaces, Sara and Rich strive to blur the indoor and outdoor together so the landscape becomes the focus. [21:40] From the towels and mugs to the scent and music, how highlighting the artisans in their local community gave them a support system they never could have expected. [27:40] “We believe the more you're out in nature, the more you'll want to take care of it.” [34:35] Looking to complete their road trip, Sara and Rich have their eyes set on Marfa, Texas as the next JTH home. What comes to mind when you think of Joshua Tree? Is it psychedelic drugs, or weird Dr. Seuss looking trees and the wide-open desert landscape? Maybe it's a place for bands like The Eagles and U2 or even influencers with big hats who just wanna escape from LA for the weekend and take selfies. Or maybe, it's a place where people come to heal or to make something, or both.Host: Zach MackJordan Coley's newsletterAvon's short filmPlease rate and review our show on Apple podcasts Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Join us for my conversation with Sara and Rich Combs, owners and operators of the Joshua Tree House properties, about their experience starting their business after moving away from the graphic design world in San Francisco. Their love affair with the desert began in 2011, when the couple began escaping to the Mojave on the weekends. Sara and Rich found the desert landscape so surreal, that it brought out a childhood curiosity in them, and it provided their creativity with sustenance that nourished their inner well being. Their getaways to the desert inspired them to buy an investment property and renovate it using their distinctive design instincts. The home quickly became such a popular AirBnB destination that they rarely had the opportunity to stay there themselves. In early 2016, they threw caution to the wind and moved full-time to Joshua Tree. At first they weren't sure if leaving the city would mean that their freelance design work would dry up, but they were willing to hustle even harder to make it work. Thankfully, Sara and Rich found that their move actually presented them with more varied creative work, not less. They now own and operate a total of 3 desert retreats, all outfitted in their signature style and comfort. Incorporating their love of the outdoors and beauty of the landscape into their homes. The Joshua Tree House has become widely known in the design and hospitality worlds. Sara and Rich's unique design sensibilities have opened the door to exciting job opportunities they would have never imagined before. urbanexodus.cominstagram.com/theurbanexodusfacebook.com/theurbanexodus
So the final episode of this series covers our process navigating the legalities of owning an historic Jack Rabbit recreational cabin the Morongo Valley Basin. As a brief overview of what Jack Rabbit Cabins are and their history I will reference the Jack Rabbit Homestead Audio Project:BEYOND THE PROLIFERATION of big box chains, car dealerships, fast food joints, and the nameless sprawl located along California State Highway 62 the desert opens up. Out there, where signs of familiar habitation seem to fade from view, a variance appears in the landscape in the form of small, dusty cabins—mostly abandoned and scattered across the landscape. The majority of the existing shacks, historically found throughout the larger region known as the Morongo Basin, lie east of Twentynine Palms in outlying Wonder Valley. The curious presence of these structures indicates that you are entering one of the remaining communities of “jackrabbit homesteads” left in the American West. The mostly derelict structures located among the occasional inhabited ones are the remaining physical evidence of former occupants who were some of the last to receive land from Uncle Sam for a nominal fee through the Small Tract Act of 1938.While we were aware of the history, we didn’t understand how the county was going to attempt to “upgrade” the housing stock in the valley, specifically targeting Jack Rabbit Cabins with challenging rules and regulations. However, during the process of our build the law changed again and instead of making it more difficult it became easier to transition from a cabin to a Single Family Home and we are in the process of doing so while protecting the historic nature of the cabin. The @afueravidacasita is available for rent for long and short term throughout the year and we expect to keep this magical place as part of our lifestyle for years to come. The desert provided us with so much to reflect and grow while learning from the pace of life seen in the desert seasons.Book the Afuera Vida Casita Airbnb here.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast for families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Welcome to episode two of the three part series - Buying an Abandoned Cabin in Joshua Tree, CA.This Episode covers the first couple months on the property - from the moment we took the keys, to the moment we realized we may have made a terrible investment. There are way too many stories to pack into a 30 minute show, but this covers the highlights. We really wanted to deliver a sense of what the days were like and how we approached the project as a family living off the grid. Over the first few months the only amenity was running water through a hose, which was a godsend, but everything else was through the van - solar power, compost toilet and a chilly solar shower. However, with each day the project progressed on all fronts - landscaping, exterior, interior, shower house, outhouse, solar power, etc… Stay tuned for the final episode of this series and check out @AfueraVidaCasita to learn more of the project.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast for families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. The Secret is, that life is magic... And where two or more are gathered, there I am. We Live in a universe built upon relationship... Life itself is a victory, its not a victory over anything, its victory with. And we can see all of life as two sides of a Third Thing, as Nested Pairs of a greater Whole, something opens up... And if you've experienced this in your own life, you might call it a flow state of consciousness, I like to call it "riding the wave." Can you stay present long enough to see clearly? -Tim Rotshchild Universal Chant (OUT NOW) featuring these lyrics : https://open.spotify.com/album/4e9HYEXgOUlIq0lA5HWgp8?si=SGbtYO6aRNy_1V1ibFkuRQ Join us at Soul Camp West in California October 23-27 2018 -- 100$ off soul camp: my.soul.camp/divine-movement Divine Evolution Retreat is 11/1-11/4/2018 in Joshua Tree CA!
