U2 is a band from the north side of Dublin that became a global phenomenon-and while its four members have traveled the world over for almost fifty years, some of the most critical points on their journey have been in Southern California. The Joshua Tree is the best-known example of U2's artistic immersion in the Golden State, but the band began drawing inspiration from California's landscape as early as 1981 during their first arrival in the U.S. for the Boy tour. From deserts to beaches to urban streets, Southern California features dozens of sites that are both sacred and significant to U2 history. For the first time, these sites are documented and categorized in a single resource to inform and support the Southern California pilgrimages of U2 fans. I Go There With You (2026) provides the information U2 fans need before embarking on such a quest, whether individually or in groups. Each site has a story, and this book tells those stories-along with must-have details for trips that require extra planning and foresight. In addition to essential information on each site's place in U2 history, author Brook W. Flagg aims to inspire U2's most devoted followers with anecdotes and scrapbooked images. Just as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. traveled through Southern California along the road from innocence to experience, their fans can find catharsis and healing by going into the mystic portals of the past-places where, over the decades, U2 found pieces of what they were looking for. First Grizzly Bear of 2026 Spotted in Yellowstone National Park On March 9, Yellowstone biologists working in the northern part of the park reported seeing the first grizzly bear of the spring season. The bear was observed in the backcountry scavenging on a bull bison carcass. The first reported grizzly bear sighting of 2025 occurred on March 14. In 2024, it occurred on March 3, and in 2022 and 2023, March 7. When bears emerge from hibernation, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter. Bears may react aggressively to encounters with people when feeding on carcasses. Male grizzlies come out of hibernation in early March. Females with cubs emerge in April and early May. All of Yellowstone is grizzly and black bear country: from the deepest backcountry to the boardwalks and parking lots around Old Faithful. Protect yourself and bears by following our safety guidelines: Prepare for a bear encounter by carrying bear spray, knowing how to use it and making sure it's accessible. Stay alert. Hike or ski in groups of three or more, stay on maintained trails and make noise. Avoid hiking at dusk, dawn or at night. Do not run if you encounter a bear. Stay 100 yards (91 m) away from black and grizzly bears. Approaching bears within 100 yards is prohibited. Use binoculars, a telescope or telephoto lens to get a closer look. Store food, garbage, barbecue grills and other attractants in hard-sided vehicles or bear-proof food storage boxes. Report bear sightings and encounters to a park ranger immediately. Officials with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department say Curtis Lee Daniels entered a Largemouth Bass in a tournament at Lake Fork that was later found to contain three three-quarter-ounce fishing weights inside its stomach. According to an affidavit obtained by KLTV, investigators also reported finding the same type of weights in Daniels' boat. The fishing tournament offered an overall prize of 11-thousand, five-hundred dollars. Daniels was arrested Sunday and booked into the Wood County Jail. He is being held on a 20-thousand-dollar bond on a charge of violating a fishing tournament law, which is considered a third-degree felony in Texas. If convicted, Daniels could face up to ten years in prison and fines of up to ten thousand dollars. Officials say other possible penalties include losing his fishing license and paying civil restitution. The disqualifications happened during the 2026 Camel Beauty Show Festival in Oman. Veterinary inspectors found evidence that some camels had been given cosmetic injections and other enhancements. According to reports from Vice Media and Forbes, the procedures included hyaluronic acid injections in the lips, dermal fillers, silicone around the nose, Botox to soften facial features, and silicone wax used to inflate the animals' humps. Those treatments violate competition rules, which require that camels be judged only on their natural physical traits. Camel beauty contests are popular across the Gulf region, where prized animals compete for prestige and sometimes large prize money. Judges typically evaluate features like the camel's  coat, neck, head, and hump—traits meant to reflect selective breeding rather than cosmetic enhancement. Organizers, including the Camel Club and the Oman Camel Racing Federation, say they're committed to preventing manipulation in the competitions and plan to enforce strict penalties for breeders who break the rules. The incident has also renewed debate about how far some competitors are willing to go in pursuit of victory—especially when a camel looks, as officials put it, “too good to be true.” Reference: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2026/03/06/camels-disqualified-beauty-pageant-cosmetic-injections-oman/89023631007/ OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you!

I'm always excited when a Lungfish release comes up on the ledger! Perhaps too excited...? Anyhow, this show I'm joined by Adz Clayton (Holiday) in the cohort chair and we go all the way down the wormhole on this album, and the band in general. Throw the year's top fives in the mix in the intro and you end ups with a ridiculously (even by EOE standards) long episode. Thus cleaving it in two. Consider this the Pass and next time we'll finish up with an interview and the Stow.

Christopher and Tom have a ton of fun ranting about these “egregious” errors. Speaking of U2, we feature at 1985 interview with bassist Adam Clayton as he and his mates come to grips with the growing popularity of the band. Adam talks about playing for screaming fans (not ideal) and comparisons between U2 and Bruce Springsteen. The remainder of the episode includes other artists from the ‘80s. Some highlights: Ian Astbury of The Cult talks about spending five years of his youth in Canada – and how he didn’t much care for it. Brian Ferry of Roxy Music discusses the importance of solo work Roland Gift talks about Fine Young Cannibals and his acting career Montreal’s The Box discuss marrying politics and music And we try to find at least ONE interesting moment in what could be the most boring interview in our archives… Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria and 91x in Belleville. We look at some criticisms (not by us - mainly!), of highly successful artists and try to find a reason for them.    This month seems to have a host of rock star deaths!  In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the passing of David Lynn Thomas of post-punk group Pere Ubu; Drew Zingg, an American blues and soul guitarist, best known for work with Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs; Joey Molland from Badfinger, and Richard Chamberlain, of Dr Kildare, Shōgun & The Thorn Birds.   Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is Bob Marley and the Wailers' “Catch a Fire”, a landmark album that established reggae as a musical force, influencing such artists as The Clash, The Police, UB40 and Eric Clapton.  Enjoy!! References:  “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, Morrissey, “We Hate it When our Friends Become Successful”, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, YouTube, “Classic Album Review”, Baz, Barry Robinson, “The 10 Worst Bands in the World”, The Doors, Jim Morrison, Patti Smith, Rob Younger, Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek, Doors' Miami concert – January 1969, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, “Hell Freezes Over”, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Guns'n'Roses, Axl Rose, Slash, Motley Crue, Shakespeare - “thankless child”, U2, Achtung Baby, “With or Without You”, Adam Clayton's private parts, “Days of Innocence”, REM, Coldplay, “music for estate agents”, Oasis, Gallagher brothers, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, “The Rest is History”, Frank Zappa, “Billy the Mountain”, “Don't You Eat the Yellow Snow”, PMRC – Parents Moral Research Centre, Tipper Gore, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl  Our email: MickandthePhatman@Gmail.com  Playlist – The music we talked about in this episode  Homer singing Kiss  Led Zeppelin's light fingers  Classic Album Reviews:  The Ten Worst Bands Ever

A new podcast episode of "Sound Speed Action" is out now — and with it we start at the beginning with the 1996 thriller “Mission Impossible” to kick off this series.Brian DePalma (Scarface, Carlito's Way) adapts the beloved thriller series for the big screen in a way that no one else can. He has a style all to himself. A really fun thing with this movie is that there is always so much detail and information to be taken from any scene you are watching in this movie. In every viewing you will definitely have a moment of “oh I didn't notice that before!”The action set pieces from the initial embassy job, to the Langley break-in scene, to the TGV helicopter chase — this movie set the bar high for action!Did we mention this movie also has a crazy fun cast? Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Vanessa Redgrave!Danny Elfman makes this movie a thrill with his exciting and dramatic soundtrack which is made only better by Lalo Schifrin's original Mission Impossible theme track and a sneaky inclusion of music too by The Cranberries and U2 members Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.The gadgets that don't always work, the tension created by ultra-silent moments during missions (Langley), the stunts, the fights — this movie is an absolute ride. One area that we were a little split on with this movie is that DePalma does a great job at trusting his audience to pay attention, read between the lines, and figure things out themselves. The other side of that is that this movie has been critiqued by some saying that the plot at times can feel a little overly complicated. Still, whatever view you have there, it's hard to deny how fun and original this movie was (and still is), at the time it was released.“Mission Impossible” is streaming now on Paramount Plus and Prime Video and is available to rent and buy on all platforms too. U2 have millions of admirers—and haters: from the fans who regard them as rock's conscience, to the cynics who blanch at lead singer Bono's self-importance. Here's the thing: U2 want to play to both crowds. They know why the haters can't stand them. After a decade of earnestness in the '80s, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen called BS on themselves, rebooting their sound and image for the '90s age of irony. This shouldn't have worked. Instead, U2 became as big as ever, and kept scoring hits. Then, when the whole sardonic thing stopped working for them, at the turn of the millennium, they went back to anthemic U2—and the hits kept coming. Their ability to pivot so many times and keep scoring hits over multiple decades is rare in pop history. Join Chris Molanphy as he explains how U2 pulled this off. How did they balance cool and cringe? How did they outlast new wave, college rock, hair metal and grunge to remain chart-toppers into the era of teenpop and hip-hop? And…what exactly were they thinking when they forced an album onto your iPhone? They don't mean to bug ya, but…why can't we live with or without U2? Podcast production by Kevin Bendis. U2 were on a sharp trajectory up after 1983's War and the 1984 live album Under A Blood Red Sky. With sharp guitar licks from The Edge, powerful and earnest vocals from Bono and a killer rhythm section with Larry Mullens, Jr (drums) and Adam Clayton (bass), U2 were on their way to being the next great rock band. However, the boys yearned for something more than rock stardom and big American fame through disposable pop hits. They wanted a more European sound that was cultivated by the likes of Roxy Music and Ultravox. So much to the chagrin of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, they employed Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Bowie) and his engineer Daniel Lanois to help guide them on a mystical musical journey that would change their sound forever. And while they did score a big radio with with Pride (In The Name Of Love), most of the album is more ambient and often subdued. Deep cuts like Bad, A Sort of Homecoming and Indian Summer Sky may have caught the attention of fans and rock DJs, the album didn't become the game changer for which they may have been hoping. However, it set the groundwork for the next album, The Joshua Tree, which would propel them to superstar status around the globe. As it turns 40, we explore this left turn by U2 which would eventually pay enormous dividends.
