Our last episode on second editions of the games Santorini and Tortuga 1667 reminded me about another second edition of a family favorite game that's out now: Parks designed by Henry Audubon and published by Keymaster Games. We covered the first edition of Parks way back on episode 7 of the podcast, and I thought I would reshare that episode here on the podcast feed in honor of the new edition of Parks. In this episode, I'm changing things up a bit and recommending a great board game for couples: Parks by Keymaster Games.I'm a big fan of the US National Parks, ever since I took my kids out west on what we called the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Tour. We saw the largest of each: we went whale-watching off the coast of San Francisco, we saw redwoods and sequoias in California, and we visited the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We visited three National Parks during that trip—Grand Canyon, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia—and each of them provided amazing sights and experiences. The board game Parks, designed by Henry Audubon, does a great job of capturing the beauty and wonder of the US National Parks. It is the prettiest game I own, with stunning artwork from the Fifty-Nine Parks Print Series. In the game, you take on the role of hikers, exploring the great outdoors and visiting as many National Parks as you can.We have two special guests in this episode. My wife Emily stops by for some color commentary and thoughts on why she enjoys playing Parks. Also, Matt Aiken from Keymaster Games joins us to talk about the origin of the game and why he thinks it's a great game for couples and to tell some stories of people playing PARKS in the great outdoors.See my photos of Parks, First Edition.Learn more about Parks, Second Edition.Order a First Player Token coffee mug.Visit the First Player Token website.Join the FPT Facebook group.Follow @firstplayertoken on Bluesky.Join the Family Tabletop Community on Discord.Music:“Open Road,” “Sunbeam,” and “Summer in Paradise,” https://www.purple-planet.com/.Send us a text

Willkommen im Northern Territory, wo die raue Schönheit des Outbacks auf die uralte Kultur der Aboriginal People trifft. In dieser Folge geht es ins Red Centre, in den Kings Canyon und natürlich zum Uluru.
We say goodbye to Uluru and drive 260km to Kings Creek Station, a rustic campground and cattle station, famous for their camel burgers, located on the boundary of Watarrka National Park. We set up camp for 4 nights and explore the various hikes and activities available within the National Park, including the beautiful and fairly easy Kings Creek hike, and the 6km moderate Kings Canyon Rim Walk which is a must do bucket list experience when visiting Australia's Red Centre! We enjoy a night at the Discovery Parks Kings Canyon Resort to experience the beautiful art installation, Light Towers, by Bruce Munro, then set off early the next day towards the West MacDonnell Ranges. It's pitted as one of Australia's worst outback roads, the infamous Mereenie Loop, AKA the CARAVAN KILLER! Katie takes up the challenge and tows the van along the entire 160km of dirt, corrugations and washouts... what could possibly go wrong?Get your hands on our Red Centre eBook and start planning your road trip today! - https://shopthefeelgoodfamily.com/products/the-red-centre-ebook-the-ultimate-road-trip-through-central-australia Watch our brand new TV series Feel Good RoadTrips on the 7Plus streaming platform - https://thefeelgoodfamily.com/feelgood-roadtrips-channel-seven-tv-series/ This episode is proudly brought to you by our friends at Nakie – the world's first 100% recycled hammock! This was probably the most difficult podcast that I ever had to record. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about our travels through California and the loss of our best travel companion, Youk. The end of April was very difficult for us and we're still working through the grief process. Youk crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 24, 2024. It was certainly the most difficult thing that we've had to deal with since we've been traveling. Youk brought joy to such a large part of lives. We literally planned our life around his schedule and well-being. In return, he gave us unconditional love and countless memories that will last the rest of lives. He was a larger-than-life personality who impacted the world in ways we never could have imagined. Countless people from all over the world have reached out to us since his passing to let us know how much they loved our best-selling author pup. In addition to Youk, we talk about our travels through several national parks in California (Joshua Tree, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, and The Redwoods), our project at the Southern California Railway Museum, our night under the Golden Gate Bridge, our Pacific Coast Highway Adventure, and of course, reconnecting with friends. We're still loving our nomad life, but it certainly has been an adjustment as our pack shrank from three to two. To read my full blog about Youk's last ride, click here.

Stand before a giant sequoia tree in Sequoia or Kings Canyon national parks or nearby Yosemite National Park and you're overwhelmed by their size, and assume they're impervious to anything that might be thrown at them. But as we learned from wildfires in 2020 and 2021 in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, that's not the case. The Castle Fire in 2020 and then the KNP Complex and Windy fires in 2021 that burned through the two parks destroyed thousands of giant sequoia trees. Estimates put the losses at more than 14,000 mature trees, or roughly 13-19 percent of the world's giant sequoias. At the Sequoia Parks Conservancy, just days after the KNP complex fires started in September of 2021 plans were made to being raising funds to help the National Park Service restore and recover areas in the two parks that were burned. Today we're discussing the ongoing recovery work with Savannah Boiano, the executive director of the Sequoia Parks Conservancy.
Hear about travel to Uluru and Central Australia as the Amateur Traveler talks to travel blogger Chris Fry from AquariusTraveller.com about her most recent trip to the red center of Australia. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-uluru-and-central-australia/ Why should someone go to Central Australia? Chris says, "I Like visiting Uluru for the Aboriginal culture, the art, the history, learning about the Dreamtime. I think it's where I first started learning about the Aboriginal history and our First Nations people and it's one of the best places to actually learn about it there. Some of the tour guides are actually Aboriginal, so they will actually tell you their history, how they grew up and everything like that, so yes, I think it's great for Australians, it's great for tourists to actually learn about that first hand from the people who have been living here for 65 million years." Chris recommends this itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in Alice Springs Arrive in Alice Springs and check into your accommodation. Take some time to explore the local area and get acquainted with the surroundings. Day 2: Exploring Alice Springs Visit the Royal Flying Doctors Museum to learn about its vital role in providing healthcare to remote regions. Explore the town's Aboriginal galleries, showcasing dot paintings and supporting local communities. Wander through Todd Mall, the central shopping district, where you can find souvenirs and enjoy lunch at one of the cafes. Discover the fascinating animal parks in Alice Springs, including a desert animal park and a kangaroo sanctuary. Day 3: Road Trip around Alice Springs Embark on a road trip along Larapinta Drive, exploring various gorges and stunning landscapes. Visit Simpson Gap, known for its white ghost gums, and a chance for a refreshing swim. Explore Standley Chasm, a narrow gorge with striking rock formations, best experienced during midday sunlight. Discover Ochre Pit, showcasing Aboriginal history through vibrant rock colors used for painting. Enjoy a swim at Ormiston Gorge, a popular swimming spot surrounded by towering cliffs. Explore Glen Helen Gorge and witness part of the Finke River. Day 4: Palm Valley 4WD Adventure Join a 4WD bus tour to Palm Valley, experiencing the rugged terrain and unique red cabbage palms. Learn about the Aboriginal history of the area and witness the contrasting colors of the landscape. Stop at Hermannsburg, an Aboriginal community, for a cultural experience. Return to Alice Springs in the evening and relax. Day 5: Journey to Kings Canyon Begin the road trip to Kings Canyon, taking the longer route for a scenic drive and passing notable landmarks. Fuel up at the Old Andado Roadhouse and explore the surrounding area. Arrive at Kings Canyon Resort, check-in, and relax for the evening. Day 6: Kings Canyon Hiking Adventure Embark on the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, a challenging but rewarding hike with stunning views. Explore the Garden of Eden, a sacred Aboriginal site with a water pool. Exercise caution around cliff edges and enjoy the unique rock formations. Optional: Take the shorter Kings Creek Walk, providing a different perspective of the area. Return to the resort for a relaxing evening. Day 7: Exploring Yulara, the Gateway to Uluru Wake up and start the day by driving to Yulara, the town that services visitors to Uluru. Yulara: Learn about the town, which has hotels, camping facilities, a tourist information center, restaurants, cafes, groceries, and fuel stations. Consider hiring a car for convenience. Distance from Uluru: Yulara is about 30 minutes away from Uluru, making it a convenient base for exploring the area. Relax and familiarize yourself with the amenities in Yulara. Consider a shuttle bus for convenient transportation within the town. Day 8: Uluru National Park Exploration Purchase a National Park Pass for 3 days and start your first day in Uluru. Sunrise and Sunset: Enjoy the specific sunrise and sunset platforms in Uluru, perfect for photographers. Daytime Activity: Embark on the 10-kilometer walk around the base of Uluru, experiencing different shapes and formations created by nature. Uluru's Beauty: Marvel at the impressive dimensions of Uluru, a single rock monolith measuring about 2.2 miles long, 1.5 miles wide, and 348 meters high. Explore various formations and sacred sites, and enjoy the unique features of Uluru. Day 9: Extended Uluru National Park Experience Return to Uluru National Park for a second day of exploration. Sunrise or Sunset: Choose between sunrise and sunset at designated areas, or consider the Field of Lights experience, an art installation with 50,000 solar-powered bulbs. Optional Activities: Consider camel rides, Sounds of Silence dinner, or a helicopter flight for a unique perspective. Aboriginal Cultural Experiences: Visit the tourist information center for information on local tours, including the opportunity to make or paint your own didgeridoo. Day 10: The Ogres (Kata Tjuta) Adventure Journey to Kata Tjuta, about 45 minutes from Yulara. Hiking: Explore the Walpa Gorge Walk, an easy one-hour return walk through the middle of two rocks. Optionally, embark on the Valley of the Winds walk, a three-hour return walk offering stunning views. Afternoon/Evening: Relax and unwind, considering the Sounds of Silence dinner or enjoying the amenities at your accommodation. Day 11: Return to Alice Springs Morning: Begin the journey back to Alice Springs, stopping at the Oldunder Roadhouse. Safety Reminder: Stay vigilant on the road due to potential encounters with free-roaming wildlife, such as cows and camels. Return to Alice Springs and explore attractions like the truck museum or take a photo at the Alice Springs entrance sign. Central Australia has some challenges like the prices, the flies and the red dirt getting everywhere, but it is also a unique and beautiful corner of Australia that is worth a visit.

Today former President Donald Trump sued his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, seeking at least $500 million for alleged breaches of fiduciary duty. The lawsuit, filed in Miami federal court, accused Cohen of "an onslaught of fiduciary and contractual breaches" through numerous "inflammatory and false statements" about Trump in books, his podcast and media appearances. Business owners and community members are openly debating the name change of Kings Canyon, Ventura, and California Avenues to "Cesar Chavez Boulevard." One community member said in the Fresno City Council meeting on March 9, "It's a burden, a hardship and it's just not that easy.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“It's built off of that design for ordinary experience where it's all about the simple moments getting people to slow down a little bit. Look out and see the sun set, see the sun rise, see the moon rise. That was something we never really noticed before living in the desert.” We're in great company with Sara and Rich Combs, Co-Founders and Owners of The Joshua Tree House, where they create spaces designed and immersed in awe inspiring natural locations such as Joshua Tree, CA and Tucson, AZ. After leaving their full time jobs to pursue freelance design in 2013, Sarah and Rich set off on a road trip from San Francisco to New York that changed their lives. Realizing throughout their travels that they had to sacrifice either design or nature in their accommodations, they set out in 2015 to create spaces that celebrate both. In this episode, Sara and Rich passionately share how the difficulties of the past couple of years in this world have created an even greater need for nature's power to heal, and how they feel so grateful to be able to offer that time and space to reflect and reset for guests. Top Takeaways [1:25] From high school sweethearts to making the desert their home, how Sara and Rich met and the welcome addition they've recently brought into their lives today. [3:30] A desire for a change of scenery from their computer screens turned a cross country road trip into “a creative retreat from the city.” [7:20] Unbeknownst to them as 3rd generation innkeepers, the Combs family has hospitality in their blood. [9:10] The intention behind Flora's name and what Sara and Rich hope for in raising their daughter surrounded by nature. [10:55] With each of their three properties, Sara and Rich built up their confidence in renovations along the way. [16:40] In designing and decorating JTH spaces, Sara and Rich strive to blur the indoor and outdoor together so the landscape becomes the focus. [21:40] From the towels and mugs to the scent and music, how highlighting the artisans in their local community gave them a support system they never could have expected. [27:40] “We believe the more you're out in nature, the more you'll want to take care of it.” [34:35] Looking to complete their road trip, Sara and Rich have their eyes set on Marfa, Texas as the next JTH home. There is a wide acceptance that we have drifted too far away from nature, and that we need to pull closer. Many have called for 30 by 30 - conserving 30% of nature by 2030. The 2022 State of the Birds Report pointed out that more than half of bird species normally found in habitats as diverse as forests, deserts and oceans in the United States are in decline. Climate change is a major factor in those declines, but human development also plays a key role by chewing into wildlife habitat and creating biological islands. How do we reverse declines in wildlife and in wildlife habitat? Can we prevent Yellowstone, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Parks, and other large Western landscape parks from turning into biological islands? Today we're going to explore the problems, and possible solutions, with Elaine Leslie, who was the National Park Service's Chief for Biological Resources before retiring, and Bart Melton, who leads the National Parks Conservation Association's Wildlife Program.

It's Black Friday and while it's no longer seen as the unofficial kickoff to the Holiday shopping season, the day is still important to retailers. This year, with Americans coping with inflation and feeling on edge about the direction of the economy, there seems to be even more concern about how much consumers will buy in the coming weeks. Gerald Storch, CEO of Storch Advisors and former CEO of Hudson Bay Company and Toys "R" Us joins the Rundown to preview this year's holiday shopping season and discuss how he thinks both consumers and retailers will be impacted by inflation and supply chain issues. The Fly Brothers return to the mic to review Hud's trip to Kings Canyon and B's encounters in the surf.Fly Brothers are a pair of fly bum brothers out west, who enjoy exploring new water, a variety of flies , a variety of fish, and sharing good times. Tune in to see where they've been, what they've been researching, and what's next on their agenda to explore. Good drifts and stay tight to the fly friends.
Bernard Yin celebrates the struggle between diverse interests. Fly Fishing, Music, Surfing and the great outdoors. Let's start with the fishing: Bernard had a great mentor: Andre Puyans of Northern California's legendary Creative Sports Fly Shop. Decades later he worked at the Fishermens Spot in Van Nuys, CA; reuniting with one of his Creative Sports cohorts Ken Lindsay. Then, later, while taking a break from rock and roll, Bernard guided in the Yosemite and Kings Canyon region. All of this surrounding an ongoing fascination with struggling So Cal trout populations. Recently, to satisfy his need to "do good deeds for fish", Bernard has been taking drone footage of California waters to assist CalTrout's dam removal agenda. Top it off, he and his wife Rebecca were recruited as Ambassadors for CalTrout and did a social media takeover with images from So Cal's delicate wild trout waters in both times of good and bad. Got Music? Bernard's history in bands and other musical projects spans over 30 years and in his own words is "too exhausting to recount so let's focus on the present ok?". The group Bernard currently shares with his wife Rebecca, PAR AVION, was recently part of the rollout of the documentary: Birth Of Endless Summer - a documentary about the inspiration behind the original iconic Bruce Brown film and surfing pioneer Dick Metz. PAR AVION is a surf influenced band and performs mostly in Southern California but has toured also ventured to such places as Mexico, France, Italy, and Puerto Rico. During the pandemic, they shifted focus to recording for film and tv licensing although now, live gigs are increasing rapidly. They are proud of their diverse supporters and as a result have found themselves performing at everything from the Lightning in a Bottle festival to the Tiki Oasis festival to, yep, Fly Fishing events such as the California Fly Fishing Open on the Kern River. In this episode Nicole shares her story about a super fun camping trip in Kings Canyon national park. It starts with a solo night where Nicole shares the ease of sleeping in your own car. You literally drive in and crawl into the back to sleep. Easy Peasy. She was joined by a friend the next morning and it turned into a wonderful wandering adventure weekend. The value of the weekend is that Nicole and her friend didn't have a particular agenda but they did have cell service to look up trails on their phones. They wandered to see the amazing and wise Boole Tree located in the Kings Canyon National Forest- this is different the National Park. Especially because the Boole Tree is marked as the largest tree in our country's national forest system but it is not the largest in the US national parks. The Boole tree stands 269 ft tall and at its base is 35 feet in diameter. It is amazing! It is also the 6th largest tree in the world! Nicole talks about how she and her friends tried taking a bunch of different photos attempting to really demonstrate the size of the tree. They also sat for a long time just being present. Mindfulness is so important in nature because it allows you to better connect with your environment and the healing power that nature can provide for people. Elise and Nicole will be doing a 7 part series discussing the many benefits of nature for people, including the lowering of blood pressure, the improvement of cognitive function, the leveling up of the immune system, calming effects, minimizing anxiety and depression. The list is infinite so be sure to tune in.After the tree Nicole and friend took off to explore waterfalls and take pictures of the setting sun in the canyon. It was truly an amazing weekend that was based of flow and what felt good in the moment as opposed to having to stick to a schedule or power through hikes just to tag a location. Being wholey present in nature is healing and magnificent. Check out the episode, share it with friends and family and join our Facebook Group- The Daring to Dabble Community.
