In this episode of On the Road with Paul Ward, Paul visits the charming Cornell Wine Company and chats with local musician and event coordinator, Sierra Drummond. Sierra shares how she got her start organizing music nights at the venue, including open mic nights and featured artist events that spotlight both undiscovered local talent and internationally known musicians like Elliot Lurie, the songwriter of Brandy (You're a Fine Girl). With a rich musical heritage—her parents are both in the band Ambrosia—Sierra began performing at just four years old and has developed into a passionate performer and songwriter. She opens up about her own songs, “Look Out For Me” and “Slow Morning,” and the creative process behind her music. Sierra also reflects on her love of the stage, the evolution of her sound, and how music connects people, whether through live shows or her involvement in community outreach efforts like clothing drives following recent fires. The conversation dives deeper into Sierra's musical family, including her mom's background vocals for Jimmy Buffett and studio work with Pink Floyd, and her own experiences in the family's band, The Tin Drum Family Band. Sierra discusses her favorite genres, instruments, and how digital media compares to the energy of live music. She also touches on the resurgence of Yacht Rock and its influence on her father's career, upcoming events at Cornell Wine Company, and her role as a music teacher during the week. From her humble beginnings at Cornell to her multifaceted role as performer, teacher, and event planner, Sierra's story is one of passion, community, and the power of music. Some towns refuse to die. Long after their last residents have vanished, something remains — eerie voices, shadow figures, and legendary folktales. In this episode, we explore five of the most haunted ghost towns in America: Bannack, MT, a lawless gold rush town with a murderous past; Bodie, CA, with a legendary curse; Wonder Valley, CA, a weird stretch of desert; Riverton, AL, a town drowned beneath a reservoir but with a very real mystery; and Garnet, MT, which became a ghost town twice. If ghosts are real, these are the places they live. With special guest, filmmaker Adam Stilwell! Six bodies were found in Wonder Valley between December of 2019 and January of 2021. Some of the bodies in the desert, including the disappearance of 37 year old single mother Erika Lloyd, started making local, then national, news. But there were no national news reports about James Escalante. We’re going to dive into the missing persons report and compare accounts from the last people who saw James to see if we can shed more light into what really happened out there in the desert on June 25, 2020. On June 25, 2020, a 56-year-old named James Escalante, who had Native American heritage and was also known by his nickname, Blackhawk, left his home in Wonder Valley, California on his mountain bike James lived with a girlfriend, Sherry, and she told law enforcement that he left the home that day to head down the road about 10 minutes from their place to help a friend of theirs named Dee whose car had gotten stuck in sugar sand, which is almost like dry desert quicksand. It’s hot out there; the average temperature for that part of the desert in July and August is 89 degrees and highs regularly top out over 100, or even 105. And out there in the desert it’s dry heat so it feels like you’re baking in an oven. It happens every year - hikers go missing or people just wander off and get lost and don’t come back. But the terrain also means that when people do go missing under mysterious circumstances it can be easier for local law enforcement to write it off as just an accident. Now supposedly the friend, Dee, had been out looking for rocks near Highway 62 and Shelton Road east of Twentynine Palms. And James had lived in that desert for a long time, and knew the area well. So the plan was for James to meet her at a specific intersection to rescue her. But once he got out there, according to Sherry, he couldn’t find Dee. So James called Sherry on his cell phone to figure out what was going on. At that point, Sherry called Dee on a three way call, and James told Dee to honk her horn so that he could find her. He seemed to think he could hear her, so he hung up. But he never got to Dee’s car. And no one ever saw James Escalante alive again. Howdy, Eavesdroppers! This episode we look at Hollywood crimes and misdemeanors involving celebs you know and celebs you might not know, starting with Geordie's take on the hoo-ha around US chiseled-jawed actor Armie Hammer. It all began with a woman called Erica Lloyd ,who went on a road trip to Joshua Tree in June 2020 – she was never seen alive again. In 2021, hikers found human remains in a place called Wonder Valley, east of Joshua Tree. And somehow, Armie Hammer became a suspect in these possible murders. But this is just the tip of the iceberg in what has become a story of intrigue, sexual peccadillos, a shady family tree and a series of disturbing yet unrevealing Instagram posts suggesting that Armie has been involved in all sorts of dodgy biz plus accusations of rape, abuse and more... Like is he a cannibal? Did he really want to barbecue his girlfriend's ribs? Will he ever work in Hollywood again? Listen in to hear the twists and turns in this strange case! Michelle then goes on to talk about two Hollywood misdemeanours that set the Twitter-verse and beyond on fire when they happened… Do you remember when Winona Ryder got caught nicking stuff from Saks Fifth Avenue? If you don't, just tune in because PEOPLE, we've got the lowdown… followed by the tee on Mel Gibson, who got drunk, drove a car and said some terrible things about Jewish people that landed him in hot water! Find out what he said, how Winona Ryder is involved in all this and why Ricky Gervais asked him what Sugar Tits means… It's all here! SPOILER ALERT: Now, if you've not watched Picnic at Hanging Rock after Geordie's wonderful story last week, just know that there's a SPOILER in this week's episode… so, you've been warned! We hope you enjoy this week's episode – and wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy Get in touch with your stories and listen, like, subscribe, share etc… Or email us at hello@eavesdroppinpodcast.com Listen here: www.eavesdroppinpodcast.com Or here: https://podfollow.com/1539144364 WE ARE NOW ON PATREON :) Want to show your favourite podcast some love by throwing a coin into the tip jar? Greetings from Wonder Valley in the desert. I recorded this episode while sitting on a porch watching the sun rise in one of my favourite places, you guessed it, the desert. In total Topanga Moon style I had to share my experience from my solo adventure to the desert and share how my soul felt returning to this special place. This time I stayed in 29 palms at a classic homestead with a cowboy tub. The cowboy tub was filled with natural hot spring water that runs to the area so it was a truly nourishing experience. I pretty much stayed in that tub the entire trip, drinking wine, listening to country tunes and watching the stars - pure bliss. I also share about my sister's gorgeous California wedding, the experiences we had and most importantly the lessons I learned about real alchemy. This episode is equal parts travel tales and soulful observations about the universe. Grab your favourite beverage and join me by the cowboy tub in Wonder Valley!airbnb rental: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/43507135?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=e7771b47-fce5-4be3-849f-1e56c1c39881Summer meditations 50% off until the fall equinox! https://www.topangamoon.com/shop/summer-meditations-new-moon-sunrise-and-moonlight-manifestationSend a note, have a cool alien story or have a podcast guest idea I would love to hear from you! ana@topangamoon.com @topanga_moon
Laurel Seidl's first experience with desert was hitch hiking from Carson City to Las Vegas in 1966. In this episode we learn Laurel has quite a bit of hitch hiking experience. Laurel moved to the desert in 1982. Her parents lived in a homestead cabin on property at the edge of Twentynine Palms, near Wonder Valley. Laurel and her future husband at the time decided they would purchase a piece of desert property in the same area – ten acres off Amboy Road - as a wedding gift to themselves. It wasn't until they came to Twentynine Palms for their wedding that Laurel learned her parents' property was up for sale. She and her new husband bought it. The property has been a farm, where Laurel and her husband raised rabbits commercially, as well as housing goats, livestock, chickens, geese, ducks, cats and dogs. After a few years, a rabbit disease made its way through the rabbit sheds, then an earthquake came and Laurel decided the animals weren't doing well, so her husband picked up gun smithing for the local Sheriffs and California Highway Patrol officers. Laurel held a number of jobs in the area: as a cook on the base and local nursing home, school bus driver, and bartender. After a few years of this, Laurel found her health was declining and she was no longer able to work. This is when she decided to return to her art. Laurel painted saw blades, feathers, rocks, spoons… none of which had a desert theme. She felt there were plenty of other artists in the desert that were doing that well. She says, “They could even paint the air pink.” Laurel became a member of a local gallery, but because her work did not depict desert scenes for tourists, her work was not shown. Looking starting thinking about the buildings on her own property and hired a cowboy who was renting a trailer on her property to start making the buildings into art galleries and after 18 months, Laurel had her first gallery room. Laurel suggested a gentlemen who'd helped with the construction – and created art – be the first show at the gallery. Eventually, Laurel started asking artists if they'd like to have a show and many were surprised to learn there would be no gallery fee or commission on their work. Laurel had only three requirements of the artists: advertise the show, furnish food for the opening reception and gallery sit on the weekends. These days, there are only two requirements: the artist's do their own advertisement and furnish the food – Laurel sits the gallery, welcoming visitors and talking with them about the artists and their work. The gallery has also had its share of mentions as ‘odd' places to visit in California – most of the time Laurel discovers this by word of mouth or by talking with visitors, as she does not have a computer or cell phone. We also learn the inspiration behind the actual glass outhouses – there are now two. In addition to showing the work of artists from the Morongo Basin, work has been shown from artists as far away as Chicago and Kentucky. Prior to beginning the renovation and creation of the new gallery rooms, the list of artists booked to show in the space ran all the way to 2024. After a messy encounter with someone she'd hired to do the concrete work for the new galleries, Laurel found herself deep in a financial pit and ended up taking a loan and using a credit card to get the galleries completed. Laurel makes it clear, "The gallery is not a non-profit, nor is it 'for profit'. If after hearing Laurel's story, you are so moved, please go to the fundraiser on Go Fund me and make a donation. Here is the link: https://uk.gofundme.com/f/keep-the-arts-alive-in-wonder-valley Join eight artists alongside Laurel and Frank as the new galleries open on Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 5 to 9 p.m.
California's Wonder Valley is arid and sparsely populated, where property values have jumped close to 20% in the last year, according to an estimate by Zillow. The typical home price is now close to $180,000. That’s a far cry from LA County’s sizzling real estate market, where the median home price is more than $700,000, according to the financial services company CoreLogic. But people who have lived here for decades are wondering what all this change might mean for them.

So the final episode of this series covers our process navigating the legalities of owning an historic Jack Rabbit recreational cabin the Morongo Valley Basin. As a brief overview of what Jack Rabbit Cabins are and their history I will reference the Jack Rabbit Homestead Audio Project:BEYOND THE PROLIFERATION of big box chains, car dealerships, fast food joints, and the nameless sprawl located along California State Highway 62 the desert opens up. Out there, where signs of familiar habitation seem to fade from view, a variance appears in the landscape in the form of small, dusty cabins—mostly abandoned and scattered across the landscape. The majority of the existing shacks, historically found throughout the larger region known as the Morongo Basin, lie east of Twentynine Palms in outlying Wonder Valley. The curious presence of these structures indicates that you are entering one of the remaining communities of “jackrabbit homesteads” left in the American West. The mostly derelict structures located among the occasional inhabited ones are the remaining physical evidence of former occupants who were some of the last to receive land from Uncle Sam for a nominal fee through the Small Tract Act of 1938.While we were aware of the history, we didn’t understand how the county was going to attempt to “upgrade” the housing stock in the valley, specifically targeting Jack Rabbit Cabins with challenging rules and regulations. However, during the process of our build the law changed again and instead of making it more difficult it became easier to transition from a cabin to a Single Family Home and we are in the process of doing so while protecting the historic nature of the cabin. The @afueravidacasita is available for rent for long and short term throughout the year and we expect to keep this magical place as part of our lifestyle for years to come. The desert provided us with so much to reflect and grow while learning from the pace of life seen in the desert seasons.Book the Afuera Vida Casita Airbnb here.ABOUT THE PODCASTRewilding Parenthood is a podcast for families leading bold and courageous lifestyles. Originally from New Jersey, Melissa Grisi was living in San Francisco and working at Ameoba Records when she got into listening to alt-country. She and her boyfriend - now husband, Ben - were digging the music and history of Gram Parsons. So, before moving back to the east coast in 2002, the pair decided to make a pilgrimage to Joshua Tree - to visit where Gram had partied with the Rolling Stones and would ultimately die, at the Joshua Tree Inn. In this episode, Melissa describes what the area was like in 2002 - an undiscovered, gritty haven with an eclectic mix of artists, criminals, Marines and desert folk. There was a fifteen year journey between Melissa's first trip to this desert in 2002 and making it home in 2015. During that time, there were numerous trips back, including their honeymoon in Wonder Valley. Purchases at the Sky Valley Swap Meet ended up in their Rhode Island backyard, creating their own desert oasis on the east coast and tiring their friends with their constant talk of Joshua Tree. The idea of moving to the desert became a reality on one of those trips when Melissa found a classified ad for a social worker at the local hospital. Melissa eventually landed a therapist job aboard the Twentynine Palms Marine Air Ground Combat Center and she and Ben bought a home in Twentynine Palms over the internet, which Ben has renovated to make their desert home, including a pottery studio for Melissa. Coming from a family who values being of service, Melissa just opened her own therapy practice in 29 Palms, Blue Sky Therapy, offering private therapy appointments, trauma informed yoga as well as training and consultation. Blue Sky Therapy Check out Melissa's pottery on Instagram: @wildhopehandmade Melissa's work is also available at Soul Connection in Joshua Tree.

A native of Wisconsin, Shana Rhodes says she didn’t feel the connection she was hoping for in Portland when she decided to move there. Intrigued by a documentary about dancer Marta Beckett, who landed in the Mojave desert under interesting circumstances and spoke of the wild horses and amazing sunsets, Shana said to herself, "I have to see this place". She packed her camera and paints and drove to the Mojave to see Death Valley for a two week exploration. Like Marta, proprietress of Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley, Shana was immediately taken with the unique beauty and solitude of the desert. Wandering through abandoned homestead cabins in Wonder Valley, she became fascinated with things weathered by the desert. Six months after a third trip to the desert, Shana committed to leaving Portland in six months. Without a job or knowing anyone here, she found a house to rent on Craigslist, moved to the Morongo Basin and was immediately hired on at Crossroads Cafe in Joshua Tree. Shana continues to serve locals and tourists at Crossroads. She talks about ‘hangry hour’ and how the crew works so well together in a small space with lines waiting out the door during busy season. At the end of her shifts, she loves going home to recharge in the silence, with a good book and her dogs, Billie and Henry nearby. Shana has been painting for 10 years – she uses it as a form of meditation. Only recently she began to share her work publicly through local art exhibitions. Initially, she was reluctant to show her work, feeling perhaps she wasn’t strong enough to take any criticism. As it turns out, her experience was completely the opposite - feeling tremendous support and encouragement from the women in the community and other artists. Shana is also a new first time homeowner and taking in all of the excitement – and responsibility – that comes with that milestone. She even put in her own concrete floors, taking her dad’s advice of, “what ever you can do by yourself, do it.” And now, every time she looks at the floor, she says she feels the satisfaction of having done it herself, in true desert ‘get it done’ fashion. Shana’s advice for folks looking to move to the desert is to be ready to deal with the silence and solitude, which makes you face your fears and hangups and to understand we move with the sun. Heather recalls her first experience with desert was on a road trip with her grandmother and says that wasn't the one that put the desert in her heart. At 14, on a Nile river cruise to Egypt with her mother and grandmother, the desert set her soul alight. Years later, living in Silicon Valley, Heather traveled to LA for work and planned a solo motorcycle trip back through the Mojave, up through Tahoe. She’d camped in Joshua Tree National park overnight, waking up to the sound of coyotes. Heather tells us as she drove out of the park into 29 Palms and heard a voice inside her say, "you’re going to live here someday". Heather bought a property in Wonder Valley and after taking a writing sabbatical at one of her own desert properties, she found a sense of feeling more energetic and creative in the desert, which spurred her to move here full time - that was about a year ago. Heather finds being in tune with nature, the mountains, the sky and the ability to be a bit isolated has been very beneficial for her work. She feels a deep connection to this desert, to the earth and the rock. In this episode Heather tells us about the painting from a friend that helped her extend the threshold of her desert home while working for a company that required extensive and regular global travel. As a futurist and security researcher, Heather studies things that are happening today to predict certain future outcomes. We talk about considering future outcomes that result from present outcomes and making strategic decisions that will lead to more predictable outcomes. Heather's clients include US & UK governments, SWIFT, Disney, IEEE, mid-size companies and start-ups. Her research has been covered in the New York Times, CNN, American Banker, CNBC, Fox and the Atlantic. She is the author of the Cyber Attach Survival Manual, published by Weldon-Owen and is the writer/producer of 14 documentaries and short films about future technology. Her work has won multiple awards from the Association of Professional Futurists. An independent study project at a local high school fueled Jennifer's passion for photography. Frequent trips to protest and social justice meetings in NYC with her older sister had her snapping photos of the likes of Abbie Hoffman. A gifted musician, Jennifer put her camera down, picked up the alto sax and flute and was playing alongside jazz greats in NYC. While at Leonard Davis Center for Performing Arts, Jennifer met her husband, also a musician. They moved out to Los Angeles, initially staying with family. In this episode, Jennifer describes they racism they faced as a mixed raced couple in search of housing. Eventually, they had three children and Jennifer needed to step away from the music career and rekindled her love of photography. It was something creative she could still do while raising the kids. Sometime in the 1990's, while the kids were in school, Jennifer, a single mom of three, took a day trip out to Joshua Tree. She describes it as a spiritual awakening as she gazed at the beauty and reveled in the silence. She continued to visit, each time a little bit longer, staying at the 29 Palms Inn, among other places. During an Art Tour weekend, Jennifer found herself in Wonder Valley, eventually purchasing a cabin that would be her go-to get-away from LA for nearly 12 years. With the kids out of school and on their own, Jennifer made the decision to move to the desert full-time. Through the connections she made during those 12 years as a part time resident, she is now very involved in the hi-desert art scene, curating shows for the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, 'Art in Public Places' and the 29 Palms Inn. She is currently putting together a show called 'Deconstruct/Reconstruct' that will open in April 2019 at Gallery 62 in Joshua Tree. In the second episode of the Mood Indigo podcast, Publishing Director Ellah Wakatama Allfrey speaks to Ivy Pochoda, author of the award-winning LA thriller Wonder Valley, about the desert setting of her novel, her characters' search for family and community, and the temptation of running away.
Growing up near Boise, Idaho, Teresa was familiar with the desert. So when a trip brought her out to the Mojave, it was like a homecoming. With a long history of community organizing, it's no surprise Teresa became immersed in the community quickly, helping out at local Community Center events, joining the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council, writing a column for the local newspaper and creating her own hyper-local paper with her husband Ken: The Wonder Valley Sand Paper, inspired by Harry Oliver's 'The Desert Rat Scrapbook' and the Scarfolk Council. Teresa recently accepted the position of Coordinator at the Wonder Valley Community Center, where new programs have included a discussion with local snake manager Bert Lies, a hike for fulgurites, American Sign Language classes and Artist of the Month exhibitions. Having graduated the the EMT Program at Copper Mountain College, Teresa is also equipped to assist members of her in emergency situations. In this episode, Teresa talks about all of this, as well as her love of Google Maps, which lead to the discovery of some truly intriguing Wonder Valley history: the Full Bloom Love Volcanic Gardens of homesteader, Hazel I. Stiles.
This is the first sub-series of The Pushing Beauty Podcastcalled The Desert Diaries. This episode is called Welcome to Wonder Valley. In it I share with you the story of how I came to own a homestead cabin in the high desert.
A native New Yorker, Ivy Pochoda has discovered the pull of the desert. After moving to LA, she'd heard folks talk about going to the desert. Eventually she took a trip to Palm Springs and, though nice, wasn't really the experience she was looking for. The second trip she booked a vacation rental 'near Joshua Tree National Park'. After driving for sometime past two entrances to the National Park, Ivy realized the definition of the word 'near' had different meanings to her and the vacation rental owner. Turns out, the reward for all that driving was staying in what's known as The Tile House in Wonder Valley. Growing up in NY, Ivy started playing squash, found she was very good at it and ended up traveling the world to play. When her parents encouraged her to get off the 'road' and find something more stable, Ivy decided on writing. Her publisher parents weren't certain that was the right choice - Ivy has prevailed. Her third novel, 'Wonder Valley', was a Los Angeles Times Book of the Year and her writing has appeared in many publications like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and The LA Times, just to name a few. Though only featured in three chapters of 'Wonder Valley', we talk about dealing with the reactions of locals, who may feel 'their place' may have been misrepresented in a work of fiction. After watching a film about LA's Skid Row, Ivy decided to get involved with LAMP (Los Angeles Men's Place) Community, teaching creative writing in their arts program. LAMP has since merged with another organization and is now known as The People Concern. Ivy finds herself planning to return to the desert even before the present trip she's on is over. Me thinks she's hooked.

Jasmine is a desert native - born in Indio and raised in Wonder Valley. With neighbors far apart, Jasmine grew up playing in the desert with her sisters, finding abandoned homesteads and playing hopscotch on their concrete pads. With a high school graduating class of just over 100, Jasmine credits social media with her ability to track down or stay in touch with some of her fellow classmates who floated in and out of the school due to a parent in the military. In this episode, Jasmine talks about the many changes she has seen growing up here, from a growth in population, to road improvements and retail offerings. Jasmine says there were times growing up when she wished she lived in an area with more 'fun', but looks back now, grateful her parents chose to make their family home in Wonder Valley, instead of Orange County. An admittedly shy kid, Jasmine speaks about following her sister into community theater and how she feels it has changed her. Jasmine is active in theaters in the Hi-Desert and 'down the hill', in Palm Springs. Jasmine on Instagram Jasmine on Twitter Palm Canyon Theatre Black Mirror on Netflix
Authors Ivy Pochoda and Galt Niederhoffer join co-hosts Eric Newman and Medaya Ocher to talk about their new noir novels. Pochoda's heralded Wonder Valley weaves a tale of striving, wayward Los Angelenos, from Skid Row through gentrifying neighborhoods and out to a New Age Desert commune; a 21st Century update of the gloom beneath LA's glamour. Niederhoffer's intimate Poison, a harrowing portrait of betrayal, is drawn from the author's own experience (she accused her ex-partner of trying to murder her); which inspires a discussion about “gaslighting,” MeToo, and the need to challenge the underlying logic of patriarchy that informs these treacherous times. Also, author and avid reader Dan Lopez returns to recommend Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher.
Ivy Pochoda is the author of the new book "Wonder Valley." It's "destined to be a classic L.A. novel," according to a review by author Michael Connelly. The book is on the Los Angeles Times "Best Books of 2017" list. Full show notes available at http://ktla.com/FrankBuckleyInterviews.
This week, we talk to bestselling film historian Scott Eyman, whose new book, HANK & JIM, is about the 50-year friendship of actors Henry Fonda and James Stewart. We also ask Ivy Pochoda about her latest novel, WONDER VALLEY. And our editors let you know which bestselling books are worth your time and which you might want to avoid!

Liar: A Memoir (Crown Publishing)Indie darling and novelist Rob Roberge makes his major-house debut with Liar: A Memoir, an intense, darkly funny book of addiction and mental illness, relapse, recovery, and the nature of memory. Liar is Roberge’s desperate attempt to document his life when faced with the prospect of forgetting it after years of hard living and too frequent concussions suffered during substance-induced blackouts. In an effort to preserve his identity (for what is identity if not memories?), Roberge records the most formative moments of his life—ranging from the brutal murder of his childhood girlfriend, to a diagnosis of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, to singing and playing guitar with his band the Urinals as an opening act for famed indie band Yo La Tengo at The Fillmore in San Francisco. But the process of trying to remember his past only exposes just how fragile are the stories that lie at the heart of who we think we are.As Liar twists and turns through Roberge’s life, it turns the familiar story of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll on its head. Darkly comic and brutally frank, it offers a remarkable portrait of a down-and-out existence scattered across the country, from musicians’ crashpads around Boston, to seedy bars in Florida popular with sideshow freaks, to a painful moment of reckoning in the scorched Wonder Valley desert of California. As Roberge struggles to keep his demons from destroying the good things he has built in his better moments, he is forced to acknowledge the increasingly blurred line between the lies we tell others and the lies we tell ourselves. A reflection on memory and an intimate look at recovery and redemption, Liar delves into the complications of the healing process and the challenges faced in trying to rebuild a life, all while Roberge infuses the narrative with candor and humor.Liar is a memoir that will provoke and engage.Praise for Liar“Roberge’s writing is both drop-dead gorgeous and mind-bendingly smart.” —Cheryl Strayed, New York Times bestselling author of Wild“Roberge is a modern master of the down-and-out-that-just-got-worse. His stories are dark and thrilling. They take hold of the reader like some bad, bracing dope and don’t let go until you feel the full measure of your own humanity. Prose this carefully wrought and true puts him in the tradition of Bukowski, Hammett, and Denis Johnson.” —Steve Almond“Roberge is the bard of the rough road, singer of the long haul, both lyrical and ferociously realistic.”—Janet Fitch“Roberge’s words bring it all back to life for me—the sounds, the sights, the smells, and the tastes. And it’s not always a pretty ride. I like that Roberge never takes the easy way out.” —Steve Wynn, The Dream SyndicateRob Roberge is the author of four books of fiction, most recently The Cost of Living. He is a core faculty member at UCR/Palm Desert’s MFA program and has taught at several universities, including the University of California’s MFA programs at the main campuses of Riverside, Antioch, and Los Angeles, and the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program. His work has been featured in Penthouse, The Rumpus, and The Nervous Breakdown, and his stories have been widely anthologized. Roberge also plays guitar and sings with the Los Angeles–based band the Urinals.David L. Ulin is the author, most recently, of Sidewalking: Coming to Terms with Los Angeles, which was longlisted for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. His novel, Ear to the Ground, will be published in April. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow, he spent ten years as book editor and book critic of the Los Angeles Times.
