Mark Vernon - Talks and Thoughts
Does nature really obey laws? A dialogue with Rupert Sheldrake

The conviction that the natural world is obedient, adhering to laws, is a widespread assumption of modern science. But where did this idea originate and what beliefs does it imply? In this episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon discuss the impact on science of the Elizabethan lawyer, Francis Bacon. His New Instrument of Thought, or Novum Organum, published in 1620, put laws at the centre of science and was intended as an upgrade on assumptions developed by Aristotle. But does the existence of mind-like laws of nature, somehow acting on otherwise mindless matter, even make sense? What difference is made by insights subsequent to Baconian philosophy, such as the discovery of evolution or the sense that the natural world is not machine-like but behaves like an organism? Could the laws of nature be more like habits? And what about the purposes of organisms, and creativity?

In this episode, I am joined by Mark Vernon to discuss the relationship between spirituality, science, and meaning in the modern world. Mark explores how our conception of religion has narrowed to focus primarily on doctrines and morals rather than experiential dimensions, which is a relatively recent development in human history. Vernon describes how human spiritual intelligence evolved not merely as a survival mechanism but as a form of "niche exploration" that allowed humans to discover immaterial realities. He contrasts the dominant enlightenment epistemology of mastery and control with spiritual traditions that emphasize receptivity and participation. Throughout the conversation, Vernon weaves together insights from his background in physics, theology, philosophy, and psychotherapy to argue that reconnecting with our inner lives and recovering a sense of wonder might be essential for addressing our current meaning crisis. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Mark Vernon is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, philosopher, and author who previously served as an Anglican priest. With a background spanning physics, theology, and ancient Greek philosophy, Vernon has dedicated his career to exploring the intersection of spirituality, science, and human meaning. He hosts regular dialogues with scientist Rupert Sheldrake, writes extensively on philosophical and spiritual topics, and maintains an active presence through various media platforms including YouTube and Substack. Vernon's diverse intellectual journey reflects his ongoing exploration of how head and heart can connect to address fundamental questions of human existence. You can check out his books here. Danny has worked with top athletes and football clubs, but his path has also taken him deep into meditation, yoga, and spiritual practice. After a powerful awakening experience in Amsterdam, his focus and experience shifted. In today's episode, I take you on a journey that I never thought I'd find myself on—a path that starts with grounded skepticism and leads into the extraordinary world of telepathic communication, autistic savants, and the high-strangeness phenomenon often associated with Sasquatch encounters. It all began with a recent interview I conducted with a Sasquatch encounter witness. During our conversation, they mentioned a podcast called The Telepathy Tapes, and their insights triggered a deep dive into something I've always been reluctant to explore: telepathy. As someone with years of experience as a police officer on the streets of Atlanta, I've always prided myself on sticking to facts, instinct, and a nuts-and-bolts approach to investigation. But sometimes the facts lead you somewhere unexpected—and that's exactly what happened here.In this episode, we cover:Spelling to Communicate (S2C): A method empowering non-verbal autistic individuals to express complex thoughts and feelings, and how this practice challenges our understanding of cognitive ability and communication. The Groundbreaking Work of Dr. Diane Hennacy Powell: Her studies on telepathy among non-verbal autistic individuals, with jaw-dropping results that point to the reality of PSI phenomena.Rupert Sheldrake's Animal Telepathy Research: How his experiments with dogs and other animals add weight to the argument that telepathic communication may not be limited to humans.Christopher Noël's Sasquatch Savant Theory: Could Sasquatch be an autistic savant species? We explore this controversial but compelling theory and its potential implications. My Personal Interviews: First-hand accounts from credible individuals who describe “mind-speak” encounters with Sasquatch. We explore what they experienced, the emotions they felt, and the questions these encounters raise.PSI Abilities and Sasquatch: How PSI, a term for psychic or paranormal phenomena like telepathy and precognition, might explain some of the strange abilities attributed to Sasquatch in witness reports.Throughout the episode, I pose one fundamental question: If there's nothing to these claims, where did they come from? Why are these stories so consistent across time, geography, and culture? As someone who has walked the fine line between the “flesh and blood” and “high strangeness” camps of Sasquatch research, I invite you to come along on this journey of discovery. It's not about having all the answers—it's about being open to new possibilities as we gather more evidence and listen to the voices of those who have had profound, life-changing experiences.

Watch: https://youtu.be/_ywyQIFMtQEDarwinian evolution shapes modern biology, but the notion of evolution has a wider history, too. In this episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon explore linear and cyclical conceptions of human and cosmic evolution and ask what they can mean in the modern world, where innovation and evolution appear to be escalating. They consider the significance of two main principles within evolution, that of diversity and creativity, and how these elements can be embraced. They also ask about the difficulty of talking about evolution today, given the presence of intelligent design and creationism. An inability to discuss evolution in a wider context is a loss because evolutionary theory itself is sophisticated and interestingly contested, both in the realm of biology but spirituality: the so-called evolution of consciousness. The discussion includes the ideas of Pierre Tielhard de Chardin and Owen Barfield, Karl Popper and Henri Bergson.

Episode Summary:For ten years running, Dr. Rupert Sheldrake has been recognized as one of the “most spiritually influential living people in the world” by Watkins Mind Body Spirit magazine. His work has been featured in many magazines, newspapers and broadcast media, including New Scientist, The Guardian, Discover magazine, The Spectator, The Washington Post, Die Zeit, the Netflix original Cunk on Life, and on BBC Radio and television.Sheldrake, a Cambridge educated biologist and author, is best known for his controversial and pioneering work on the concept of morphic resonance, which suggests that there are inherent patterns of behavior in nature influenced by past occurrences of similar patterns, creating a kind of collective memory that transcends individual organisms and time. His ideas have sparked debate, especially within the scientific community, because they challenge the mechanistic worldview that traditional science holds. Labeled a heretic within the scientific community for his embrace of spirituality, Sheldrake's research opens up a fascinating dialogue between science and spirituality, suggesting these realms are not as separate as we've been told.Sheldrake argues that science and spirituality can complement each other, rather than be in opposition. He believes modern science has become too reductionist, focusing solely on material explanations and overlooking the potential for interconnectedness and universal consciousness. Spiritual practices like meditation, singing, and pilgrimage, which have long been seen as purely subjective experiences, have positive effects on the human experience that can be understood and measured through scientific research. While Sheldrake's work doesn't directly “prove” the spiritual benefits of practices like meditation, singing, and pilgrimage, he offers a perspective that allows for these practices to be understood scientifically. For instance, numerous studies have shown that meditation has tangible effects on the brain, such as enhancing neuroplasticity, reducing stress, and improving emotional regulation. Singing has been shown to have positive effects on mental health and can trigger the release of endorphins and oxytocin, promoting feelings of well-being and connection. Pilgrimages are associated with transformative spiritual experiences, and research on this topic shows that they often lead to positive shifts in mental health, increased sense of purpose, and connectedness with others. Sheldrake believes pilgrimages are sacred journeys that not only connect us to sacred sites, but more broadly, to the universal field of human connectivity across space and time.I sat down with Dr. Sheldrake from his home in London to discuss how his background as a world-renown scientist impacted his spiritual quest. We discussed his journey in and out of the Anglican tradition, morphic resonance, why he's been labeled a heretic in the scientific community, the transformational power of pilgrimage, why evolution and Christianity support one another, and other existential questions like, “What really is the meaning of life?”We've had some incredible guests on the show over the previous five years, but Sheldrake is by far the most prominent, globally recognized scholar we've been fortunate enough to know and engage. That’s what I’m talking about on this episode of The Gathering Room podcast—episode 189: Finding the Field. The name of my Wayfinder Life Coach Training program was inspired by the wisdom of ancient “wayfinders”—people who had their own ways of navigating through whatever terrain they lived in, which is what I do as a life coach. There is a scientist named Rupert Sheldrake who went wayfinding into the structure of the universe and came up with his theory of “morphic fields”—the idea that nature has memory, where similar patterns influence others across time and space. So I was thinking, when we go wayfinding, we’re going toward a morphic field. And while I call it wayfinding, I never tell people exactly what they’re finding their way toward, only that whatever it is will lead them to their purpose. My wayfinding techniques put you in a state where your mind becomes a sort of field of openness that can receive things that resonate with the space, silence, and stillness that’s holding us all in a matrix of love. Going into the Self and finding your way using the “compasses” of your body, heart, mind, and spirit is how you will “wayfind” to the new consciousness—a collective shift in the way humans think, the way we process consciousness, and the way we use our consciousness. To hear more about the new consciousness and how to access it (plus hear about my vivid encounters with the spirit of Dante Alighieri!), tune in for the full episode. You’ll also be able to join me for a guided group meditation devoted to those who are scared, suffering, or lonely. Come meet me in the field. She introduces plasma, the universe's most abundant state of matter, as a potential medium for non-human intelligences, pushing the boundaries of conventional definitions of life and sentience. Her exploration ventures into the enigmatic Kordylewski dust clouds, contemplating the presence of consciousness within these elusive cosmic phenomena. By weaving these insights together, McNeill calls for a renaissance of animistic thought in science, urging a paradigm shift that embraces the possibility of intelligence permeating the cosmos. With thanks to Pam Gregory   / @pamgregoryofficial  00:00Challenging Materialism: A New Perspective on the Universe02:51The Nature of Plasma: Understanding Non-Atomic Matter06:11Exploring Cosmic Intelligence: The Kordylewski Dust Clouds09:02Reviving Animism: Consciousness in the Universe11:57Key Takeaways: Rethinking Life and IntelligenceSend us a textMagical Egypthttps://linktr.ee/magicalegypt.comVanese's Magick Works https://linktr.ee/magickworksOther https://www.facebook.com/vanesemcneillhttp://www.magicalegypt.comhttps://www.patreon.com/magicalegyptGet the latest updates on our link tree https://linktr.ee/magicalegypt.com Connect https://www.facebook.com/vanesemcneill Own Magical Egypt http://www.magicalegypt.com Get Heka https://wow.magicalegyptstore.com/heka Become a Patron https://www.patreon.com/magicalegypt

Forms are all around us: clouds, flowers, creatures, even systems of thought and logical relations. And yet the nature of forms is rarely part of the modern scientific conversation. In this episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon discuss the importance of forms and how they work. The need for form to account for life as we know it has been eclipsed by the mechanical philosophy of modern science that turned instead to forces, extrinsic causes and abstract laws. But the case can be made that science needs to revisit the notion of forms. Rupert's own work draws much from that imperative. The existence of forms also matters in terms of explaining our relationship to others and the world around us. If the cosmos is more mind-like than matter-like than that means our sense of participation and communion is real. Indeed, it might be said that when we study and contemplate, our minds meet the intelligence implicit in all things, which itself arises from the divine intelligence that shapes existence itself.

This week's show is with Sarah Janes. Author, researcher, curator, retreat/workshop facilitator and public speaker, Sarah Janes specialises in the ancient history and culture of dreaming and has been an enthusiastic lucid dreamer since childhood. Sarah is passionate about the potential of dreaming for physical, emotional, creative and spiritual upliftment, not just for individuals, but for culture and society. Sarah is co-director and curator of Dream Palace Athens, a symposium and deep-dreaming residency project in Greece. She is also the host of popular online lecture series Explorers Egyptology. Sarah has collaborated with Rupert Sheldrake and the British Pilgrimage Trust to reinvigorate the practice of dream incubation at sacred sites around the UK. Currently leading retreats to the ancient dream incubation sanctuaries of the Mediterranean, Sarah is now based between Hastings in England and Archaia Epidavros in the Peloponnese. Sarah's book: Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne explores the history and culture of dreaming in the Western Esoteric Tradition and is available from all book sellers and on Audible. In this show, Sarah and Lian delve into the profound world of dreams and lucid dreaming, exploring how these altered states of consciousness shape our understanding of reality. They discuss Sarah's lifelong passion for dreaming, the philosophical implications of lucidity, and the potential for personal growth and transformation within the dream realm. They explore the connection between lucid dreaming and hypnagogic states, highlight the transformative nature of these experiences, and share practical techniques for achieving lucidity. Together, they reflect on the role of ancient wisdom in dream practices, consider the cosmic perspective lucid dreaming provides, and emphasise the significance of memory and intention in shaping our dream experiences. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Dreams offer a unique intersection of sleep and wakefulness, providing a space for insight and creativity that taps into our deepest desires and fears. Through lucid dreaming, we can actively engage with these elements for self discovery. Hypnagogic states, those transitional moments between wakefulness and sleep, can be used as a pathway into lucid dreaming, allowing us to consciously enter the dream realm. In this state, we are connected to ancient cultural practices that viewed dreams as essential tools for decision-making and self-understanding. Lucid dreaming is not simply a binary experience but can manifest in varying degrees of awareness - lucidity is a spectrum. By setting intentions, practicing memory recall, and recording dreams, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of the dream world as a transformative and healing space. Where is nature's memory of its evolution encoded? Is there evidence for extended mind occurring beyond individual brains? How possible is it that the sun is conscious? In this episode we're going to get up to date on Rupert Sheldrake's extraordinary theory of Morphic resonance: so Morphic fields, the unfolding of nature's ‘habits' and the ‘memory of nature'. We'll examine the possibility of levels of consciousness larger than our own brains - scaling up in a hierarchy from cellular consciousness right up to planetary and perhaps even stellar consciousness! We're also going to get into examples of consciousness beyond the brain like ‘the sensation of being stared at' (clearly a useful skill to evolve) and other phenomena Rupert has reported in his experiments.  Rupert Sheldrake is a Cambridge PHD developmental Biologist whose published over 100 papers on topics as wide as Cellular Biology, telepathy, Pets who know when their owners are coming home, and after-death communications. My special guest tonight is Elena Mannes who's set out on a journey to gain a deeper understand of dogs by way animal communicators, psychics, and scientists studying animal intelligence. An exploration of animal spirituality and the ability of animals to communicate with humans even in the afterlife. Looking for companionship after a near-fatal car crash, Elena Mannes, an award-winning television journalist and producer, decided to get her first dog. But what she found with her dog, Brio, shook the foundations of her physical and spiritual worlds, sending her on a quest to discover the nature of his spiritual origins and to contemplate and seek out the possibility of interspecies communication - even after death. Soon after bringing her puppy home, Mannes realized the master-companion relationship would not be possible with Brio, who quickly showed he had a mind - and a spirit - of his own. Mannes' growing curiosity about the intelligence, emotions, and consciousness of Brio and other dogs led her to contact an animal psychic in California who described, with amazing accuracy, Brio's favorite walks and the author's apartment from the dog's point of view. Mannes' skeptical journalist background compelled her to investigate further. She delved into the world of animal communicators, psychics, and scientists studying animal intelligence, including Rupert Sheldrake, to find answers to her multiplying questions: Do animals have thoughts and feelings? Consciousness? Souls? Is interspecies communication possible? Can animals reincarnate? Spanning the entire life and afterlife of Brio, including his last days and his messages to the author after he passed on, this audiobook also explores Mannes' investigations into the spiritual life of animals, offering a new understanding of the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. Mannes invites listeners to move beyond the owner-pet relationship and shows us how to see animals as thinking, feeling, spiritual beings whose connections with us extend far beyond life and death.

Purposes in Nature and Minds

One of the premises of modern science is that nature is devoid of purposes. Instead, purposeless explanations for phenomena are sought. And the strategy has proved hugely productive. Except that allusions to purpose never quite fade from the scientific imagination. In this episode of the Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogues, Rupert Sheldrake and Mark Vernon explore the ways in which the natural world is indeed full of purposes, both at the level of the so-called inanimate, as well as in the living world, and the reality we know most immediately and best, namely our own lives and consciousness. The discussion ranges over a range of matters, from the growth of embryos to the attractive nature of gravity and the tendency towards order and beauty. An implication of the presence of purpose in nature and minds is a need to rethink phenomena such as matter and power. And there is an obvious reason that purpose keeps reappearing in scientific accounts, namely that purposes are present in all things. Mark's discussion of David Bentley Hart's book, All Things Are Full Of Gods, mentioned in the discussion can be found as an early post on this podcast.

They consider how memory is linked to emotion and place, drawing on insights from Aristotle to AN Whitehead. Rupert's own work has led to the theory of morphic fields, within which all self-organising systems dwell. They also ask about Indian ideas of memory and how that is related to ideas about reincarnation and the possibility that everything that exists lives, in some way, in the memory of God.

Ep. 142 (Part 2 of 2) | Award-winning author of The Web of Meaning and founder of the Deep Transformation Network, Jeremy Lent, relates how his discovery of systems thinking opened the door to a whole new way of making sense of the world and illumined his in depth exploration of what creates meaning. In looking into what forms concepts like God, soul, humanity, nature, and science, Jeremy came to understand the thinking that has led to the existential crisis we face now, then began to explore what it would take to break out of the worldview that has caused so much destruction on so many levels. Jeremy integrates systems thinking with concepts from evolutionary biology, neuroscience, ecology, and traditional and indigenous wisdom, forming a holistic view of science, where “maybe the distinction between science and spirituality isn't really valid.”Jeremy's heartfelt intention is to act as translator—to make it enjoyable for people to explore difficult concepts like consciousness and evolutionary biology they might otherwise steer away from—as well as be a catalyst for large-scale transformation. His vision of a potential future “ecological civilization” builds on the evolutionary success of life itself—ecosystems living in mutual symbiosis—and includes the idea of “islands of coherence” which would provide a bridge from a disintegrating society to a new and flourishing one. Systems thinking, like indigenous wisdom, recognizes the deep connectedness of all things, a realization, Jeremy points out, that leads to the knowing that nothing is inevitable and the choices we make matter. Jeremy leaves us with a sense of agency and of liberation, as well as a sense of responsibility to work together in the shaping of a life-affirming, sustainable future. Rupert also demonstrates how fields can influence seemingly random effects using a Galton Board - a remarkably profound analogue for, say, practices such as prayer.
