In this episode, we're talking about one of my favorite bands from when I was in high school, The Fixx. We will also dig into my favorite Fixx album, Reach The Beach. When I moved to North County San Diego, in Oceanside California, I was exposed to new music from the alternative station 91X out of San Diego, and friends—especially my friend J.D. who was also a big fan of The Fixx. I heard a lot of their stuff on 91X, and J.D. copied me some of their early albums, and I became a big fan.

I firmly believe that both mainstream Rock and Roll and Hip Hop died in the year 2000. That said, I have a genuine soft spot for the early days of Skratch 'N Sniff's blends before they started putting dubstep drops on everything and I lost interest after 2010. They used to post their edits on a now-defunct site as full tracks, and at some point around 2008 or so, I grabbed as many as I could and tucked them away for safekeeping. It's time to give Skratch 'N Sniff their flowers. I'm not sure if they're still on San Diego's 91X, where I first found them in 2003, but their weekly remix show is nationwide now. I should check in and see what they've been up to. How I Got Here with Dave Fiore

In this episode, host Dave Fiore speaks with Erica Thaler, chief marketing officer at RB Oppenheim Associates and former communications and marketing manager at the Council on Culture & Arts. Erica grew up in San Diego, where she raced catamarans and was a self-proclaimed horse girl who loved being an ‘80s kid because it included trips to Mexico to “practice her Spanish.” Erica majored in political science at UCLA and started her 30-year career in radio as an account executive at 91X, the country's second alternative rock station. After moving to Tallahassee, she and her two children started taking music lessons, and Erica spent 10 years playing the violin, some of that time with the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra, an organization she would eventually lead. Erica is a wife, modern quilter, dog lover and passionate advocate for the arts who is excited about her new role doing what she has always done – effectively connecting people and resources to help them be successful.

I firmly believe that both mainstream Rock and Roll and Hip Hop died in the year 2000. That said, I have a genuine soft spot for the early days of Skratch 'N Sniff's blends before they started putting dubstep drops on everything and I lost interest after 2010. They used to post their edits on a defunct site as full tracks, and at some point around 2008 or so I grabbed as many as I could and tucked them away for safekeeping. It's time to give Skratch 'N Sniff their flowers. I'm not sure if they're still on San Diego's 91X, where I first found them in 2003, but their weekly remix show is nationwide now, and I should check in and see what they've been up to. Chris Cantore was on Southern California Radio for decades. As people enjoyed tunes of Sublime, the taste of  Carne Fries and the thrills of sneaking over the Mexican boarder.. they most likely did it to the deep sounds of Chris Cantore on the airwaves over Tijuana and San Diego on 91X. These days Chris is forging a path in the new digital space of Podcasts and beyond. He has formed an Entertainment Network called YEW. YEW is many things but as of lately we are bringing you live concerts! Chris has gone back to his roots of being a show promoter, something he learned while being at 91X. These shows are called SUNDOWN SESSIONS they take place at the Mission Bay Yacht club in San Diego. Fans get a one of a kind, intimate sunset session with friends, drinks and their favorite artist. You might recognize my guest's voice if you ever turned on a radio in San Diego; from his days at 91X all the way to killing it as 100.7FM's morning show host, Chris Cantore has been one of the most distinct voices to come across the airwaves. Unfortunately, he and his co-host, Meryl, were victims of what I like to call the Great San Diego Radio Station Purge of 2019. For those of you not familiar, about 98% of San Diego's local radio talent lost their shows when stations shifted to nationally syndicated shows that offered the same canned bullshit catering to the lowest common denominator we've been subjected to for decades. Of course, we all know what happened at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, so he had some time on his hands. For us creatives, idle hands are the devil's toys, so he looked for alternative outlets for his creative energies. One of those outlets is the animated short, The Arlo Show. It follows the adventures of Arlo (voiced by Cantore), who takes a bad acid trip in 1971 and winds up waking up in 2021. Harassed by local beat cop, Officer Mahoney (voiced by SoCal legend Chris Coté), Arlo must now learn how to navigate 2021 after his 50-year Ichabod Crane. I had to dig deep into my CDs collection for this mix. 1997 was a dope year. I was living the life in San Diego serving on the USS Constellation. San Diego had a sweet music scene along with a great local rock station (91X, still there and dope as ever). This mix consists of bands that I was banging hard in my Discman that year. Some of them I found on my own and some were pushed on me by enthusiastic fans at the time. Quicksand came to my attention due to the skinny, gap punk, a-hole who used to date my sister and with whom I was stuck on a cross country road trip that year. Veruca Salt were my pretend girlfriends at the time, and some nice young lady who I met in Australia later mailed a mixtape to me with much of the first Powderfinger CD on it, for instance. All of these bands were slept on in their day. P.S. In 1997, I was obsessed with Ænima but feel that Tool is too mainstream for this mix so they're represented by the ridiculous opening track. Enjoy and be careful as you rock out with your thing out:) Tool - Ænima Intermission Quicksand - Fazer Powderfinger - Give Veruca Salt - Awesome Failure - Heliotropic Rocket From The Crypt - Heater Hands Veruca Salt - With David Bowie Quicksand - Thorn In My Side Powderfinger - Turtle's Head Rocket From The Crypt - On A Rope Many More . . . I went by DJ alt.rock for 10 years as a tongue-in-cheek diss at lazy rock & roll radio program directors "discovering" '90s alternative rock in the late aughts. DJ alt.rock was also a nod to early rap names that usually contained either "rock" or "ski"... Never in a million years did I imagine that the prefix "alt-" would be so drastically ruined by a former reality TV clown, but that's exactly what happened in 2016/17... I've done my best to clear that name from as many mixes and artwork as possible, but some sets have so many alt.rock DJ-drops in them that I've opted to just post this notice and keep it moving. From now on, I'm using my first name, because nobody can mess it up (other than myself).

Former New Orleans Radio DJ (WZRH 106.1 The Zephyr) Ross Shields opens up about Bipolar Disorder, Cancer, Hurricane Katrina, and living with Don, his cat who has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Before getting to the Bipolar Disorder stuff, meet Ross Shields: Selling shoes isn’t easy in Louisiana.  It might be the humidity or it might not.  Shields is neither a Meteorologist nor a Podiatrist.  Despite these challenges, he chased his dream of being a shoe salesman in Louisiana.  When that didn’t work out, he took a job as a disc jockey at an Alternative Rock radio station in New Orleans.  He then moved on to a job at 91X, a San Diego radio station, where he enjoyed talking to all manner of real and imaginary people on the air. Then illness took over. As Ross lost touch with what was real on and off the radio, he began abusing drugs and alcohol.  The combination of the mental illness and substances proved to be too much for him to continue with his career.  He became less interested in playing records on the radio, and more interested in devoting his time to two of his passions: crushing his own skull with a jackhammer, and pulling out his fingernails with pliers.  Normal stuff. Then he moved back to Louisiana.  Then cancer came along.  Then Katrina hit, and it was difficult for Ross to receive medical care.  All he had was his illness and his cat Don, who struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder. After years away from radio, Ross decided to open the doors to Psych Ward.  “Dr. Ross” is the Doctor, the Patient, and the Superintendent.  Check yourself into Psych Ward and let Dr. Ross take a good, long look at your dendrites.  Ross will use his lack of clarity to dispense advice to people, be they real or imaginary.  Or both.
