Hey hotties of da world; it's Akosua, and we're finally here—the grand finale of Season 4! This episode is all about shedding the old, reclaiming your power, and stepping into your best self. It's time to let go of the tears, let go of the unnecessary drama, and say goodbye to anything that doesn't serve your peace or your growth. I'm diving deep into the importance of setting your standards high and never compromising on your self-respect. We're talking about how to say “no” when you need to and how to honor yourself through the choices you make. But that's not all. I'm also sharing some thoughts on something a little more personal—creating your signature scent. There's something so magical about finding that fragrance that represents you, that embodies your essence, and I'm going to explain why it's more than just a scent; it's a part of your identity. And, of course, we're wrapping up with some real, unfiltered scoops of truth. I'm sharing my raw thoughts on everything from love and self-worth to how we all get caught up in the hustle of life and forget to take care of ourselves. This episode is a powerful reflection of everything we've learned this season, and I'm leaving you with the motivation and mindset to enter the next chapter with confidence. So sit back, take it all in, and get ready for some deep conversations and a whole lot of truth before we head into the exciting adventures of Season 5! Today I talked to Esinam Bediako about here novel Blood on the Brain (Red Hen Press, 2024). When Akosua, a 24-year-old grad student in New York, falls and bangs her head, she has too much drama in her life to pay attention to her headaches and exhaustion. She's just broken up with Wisdom, her boyfriend, she learns that her long-estranged Ghanian father is in New York, and she's worried that dropping so many graduate classes means that she'll lose her scholarship and work-study job in the library (where she met Daniel, her new crush). As she grapples with her Ghanian-American identity, her mother's wishes for her, her troubled relationship with the father who left when she was a child, and her coursework, Akosua's head injury worsens, and she wakes up in the hospital, forced to confront her own history, memory, dreams, and desires. Esinam Bediako is a Ghanaian American writer from Detroit. She writes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, including awkward third-person autobiographies. A graduate of University of Southern California (M.A.T. in Secondary English), Sarah Lawrence College (M.F.A. in Fiction), and Columbia University (B.A. in English and Comparative Literature), she has worked as a high school English teacher and administrator, a textbook editor, and, during one nerve-wracking summer, a pharmacy technician. She currently writes and edits for the Spondylitis Association of America. She is the author of the Ann Petry Award-winning novel, Blood on the Brain (Red Hen Press, 2024), as well as the essay/poetry chapbook, Self-Talk (Porkbelly Press, 2024) and you can find some of her recent work in Porter House Review, Cathexis Northwest press, Great River Review, North American Review, and Southern Humanities Review. If 22 people were being shot each day on Canadian streets, you might expect a federal state of emergency to be called, a co-ordinated federal-provincial-territorial response, billions of dollars flowing out of government coffers to stop the violence. The opioid crisis hasn't received the same kind of all-hands-on-deck approach. Instead, there has been immense politicization of the issue, with different sides arguing different approaches while accusing political opponents of making the crisis worse and literally killing people.  In this episode of “It's Political,” we tackle the question of how to deal with the opioid crisis through different lenses. First, we'll look at the move behind decriminalization of personal possession for small amounts of illegal drugs. We'll hear about the experience in British Columbia with its three-year decriminalization pilot, the reforms its brought and the impact in Ontario. We'll look at the impact of safe injection sites, and the experience so far with “safe supply.” What is working, what is not working as well as it could be and what's behind the lack of progress? Then, we'll sit down with Alberta's Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Dan Williams and discuss his province's focus on treatment and why he believes “safe supply” isn't the answer. Finally, Federal Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu joins us to provide the federal government's perspective. Some of the clips this week were sourced from the House of Commons, CPAC, CTV, and BreakTheNeedle's X account. This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Michal Stein and Althia Raj. Joy SpearChief-Morris assisted with production. Kevin Sexton mixed the show. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel. In this episode: Alberta Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Dan Williams, Federal Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu, Moms Stop the Harm co-founder Leslie McBain, Akosua (last name withheld), who has been sober from drugs for six years, Dorian Clough, a person living with addiction, Memorial University Assistant Professor Gillian Kolla, Sudbury's safe consumption site's former manager Amber Fritz, McMaster University Assistant Clinical Professor Dr. Lori Regenstreif, Peterborough Deputy Chief of Police Jamie Hartnett, Vancouver City Councillor Rebecca Bligh, Richmond City Councillor Alexa Loo, Surrey City Councillor Linda Annis, University of Alberta Associate Professor Elaine Hyshka, and Liberal MP for Beaches-East York Nathaniel Erskine Smith. Hailing from the gold coast, and currently breaking barriers in Britain, this week's guest, Akosua Bame, is an accomplished management consultant with a very specific skillset: Reviving dying corporations through mindset transformation.  After 20 years of success in her craft, Akosua has pioneered a unique and trademarked approach to catalyzing change that starts with the mind of an individual. In our conversation, we use her Mindset Revolution™  Concept and HEARD ™ approach to unpack the fundamental psychology of why people, families, organizations, and nations at large, either succeed or fail. We embark on a reflective journey of why we act the way we do, and how nations like Rwanda have used the power of collective behavioral change to initiate and sustain long-term growth.  At the end of the day, Akosua argues, it is not our hopes and aspirations that will make our lives and communities successful, but an intentionally crafted system of psychological and cultural incentives and activities!  In this fascinating episode, we are challenged to see the bigger picture, by first looking within.  Join us for another incredible deep dive into the life journey and craft of an industry leader unlike any other. While this episode dives deeper into our complexities as individuals, we feel the acknowledgment of showing up with an entire biography is often overlooked. This...I...Do...For...Me: Over 50, Black and Fabulous!

Akosua Awusi is the Founder and Chief Experience Officer at African Conversations and Connections (ACC Tours) — a boutique travel company providing group excursions to sub-Saharan Africa. ACC Tour's mission is to help tell the African story by providing safe, world class and inclusive guided tours of what Akosua likes to call Black Africa. ACC Tour's primary goal is to allow travelers to experience Black Africa below the surface. The company's curated tours are intimate by design — this allows travelers to immerse themselves in Africa's people, history and culture. In this interview, Akosua delves into what is magical about Ghana, its beautiful and welcoming people and why everyone should visit West Africa at least once. Akosua also shares with us her business model for getting more African Americans to visit the motherland, and she excitingly shares with us that ACC Tours have expanded their model into Tanzania. The company will also be expanding into Senegal and Nigeria. She is especially proud that in addition to her staff introducing travelers to the historic sites (e.g. Elmina at Cape Coast, Makola Market in Accra, 233 Night Club, etc.), she and her staff are adept at helping you to solidify your vision of the kind of experience you would like to have while in Ghana. If you want a dance class, yoga sessions, or take a ride in an ATV, ACC Tours can help you with that and many more offerings. We also jokingly talk about the friendly competition of which West African country has the best Jollof! Is is Ghana, Senegal or Nigeria? Akosua, who is a first generation American (her parents immigrated to Maryland from Ghana), received her degree in Finance from Temple University and her MBA from Pennsylvania State University. Akosua is bilingual in both English and Twi, and she has lived in Ghana and Belgium, along with working in other major cities in Africa and Europe.

Being fired whilst pregnant led Akosua Cassaberry (residing in the US), to follow her dream and passion by starting her own company 'Brand Authority Publishing” for Licensed Professionals in search of local, regional, or national recognition. Akosua developed her passion for writing and publishing from her father who was an English teacher and published author. She entered the publishing world in 2014 as an editorial intern and spent 8 years working with international publishing and media companies until being fired and starting up her own company. Akosua believes that as an introvert, whether you work as a leader in the corporate world or looking to become a published author, applying an entrepreneurial mindset and adopting 'self promotion' is key and that you can self-promote in ways that are authentic to who you are through being intentional, patient, persistent and consistent. In this podcast Akosua shares her journey to becoming the 'Brand Authority Publisher' and her passion for helping others write. She also expands on the 5 principles she believes licensed publishers need to build brand authority (publishing, professionalism, social media, testimonials and website). About Akosua Cassaberry Born in Ghana, raised and presently living in the US, drawing on her experience and dissection of the 5 most common principles of the brands she had worked with from 2014 until being fired whilst pregnant earlier this year (2022) Akosua created “Brand Authority Publishing” for Licensed Professionals in search of local, regional, or national recognition. Akosua Moore and Kimberly Morgan were two strangers brought together through genealogical and historical research. At the center of their connection is a man named Stephen Binyard, who is Moore's ancestor and is buried in Edgerly Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. The two women met in person for the first time in 2014 and during this first encounter, they discovered that not only were they researching the same person but they also shared the same dream - to do genealogical research with Dr. Henry Louis Gates for "Finding Your Roots". Since then, not only has their research into Stephen Binyard uncovered a larger history about the lives of the formerly enslaved people buried in Edgerly Cemetery and who were once enslaved on Edgerly Plantation, but the two women have also realized their dream of working for "Finding Your Roots"!

What a treat to meet the artist behind more cross-genre iconic licks than I can count. Fellow Bronxite, Eddie Martinez, surrounded by platinum records, without a trace of a New York accent, was fun, whip-smart, thoughtful, articulate, inclusive, with stories to spare. Inspired by the Beatles, Hendrix, and Beck, Eddie started out when his neighbor, Nile Rogers, lead him to his first professional gig with Mother Night. Eddie took us through his time with LaBelle, game-changer, rocker, Nona Hendrix, Blondie, at the height of their heyday, cross-over to jazz with Lenny White and then Stanley Clarke and George Duke, She's The Boss, with Mick Jagger, getting to play with Beck, and at Live Aid, Tina Turner, his years with Robert Palmer, so many gold nuggets there, Addicted to Love to Simply Irresistible, Run DMC (Guitar World ranked Eddie's contribution to Rock Box Number One on its list of The Top Uses of Guitar in Hip Hop, David Lee Roth when he was it, with Crazy From The Heat. We talked his time with Joe Cocker, Lou Reed, meeting John Lennon and Yoko (playing with her), then Ringo, playing with Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, we would've needed hours to get through his complete discography. Eddie's solo album, Akosua, is a mind-blower. The cut, Majestic, with his killer vocals to match his thrilling guitar, is on heavy rotation in my kitchen. The LP is a masterful treat, available on iTunes and Amazon Music. Loved every moment in Eddie's good company. Heartfelt thanks to Carmine Rojas for introducing me to his old, my new, dear friend. Eddie Martinez is a rarity in rock, and in life––brilliantly talented, knowledgeable, sweet, gracious, gentleman. A gem. Akosua Asare is the founder and CEO of Essence Luxe Couture, a luxury wig brand powered by AI that uses ethically sourced hair to create meticulously handcrafted wigs. The company mission is to help those who suffer from hair loss, while breaking down the traditional barriers to entry for minorities in the beauty industry. At the age of 21, Akosua developed alopecia, a condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Akosua immediately recognized the disconnect in the industry - custom wigs are expensive and limited to standard styles, colours, and head sizes, with no “trying on” process so to speak. So Akosua channeled her experience into an opportunity. Today, Essence Luxe Couture creates custom wigs based on your specifications and is looking to expand this function with proprietary AI-technology. The end goal is to create an immersive experience in which you can virtually try on wigs of all shapes and colours, all from the comfort of your home.
