Dia Morgan is a pop singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. She's originally from Chicago, Illinois. I’ve wanted to have her on my podcast for quite sometime, and we finally made it happen. She’s worked with Judy Stakee, who was a previous guest on the show, and a number of other rising artists and songwriters in the Los Angeles pop music scene. Dia and I talk about a myriad of topics, including the songwriting process, ADD and mental health, and what makes a good song. It’s not too often that I become incredibly inspired, and I find it hard to maintain that inspiration. Songwriters like Dia have a special gift that allows them to turn that inspiration and story into a song, which is so amazing to me. She breaks down that process and how she maintains her inspiration through life moments and stories. -- Links to things mentioned: “Rain in Malibu”: https://open.spotify.com/track/4PVRTZmgWS2B8WqOiAftFJ?si=zWQfXc6ERUGQmbpaYdmTrw Judy Stakee’s episode: https://whenlifehandsyoulennons.simplecast.com/episodes/024-judy-stakee Judy Stakee: https://judystakee.com/ Your song needs a story, not just a title: https://www.lennoncihak.com/music-needs-a-story/ And the Writer Is…: http://www.andthewriteris.com/ Full Sail University: https://www.fullsail.edu/ Sheryl Crow: https://sherylcrow.com/ Gavin Degraw: http://gavindegrawtour.rtouring.com/ SoundCloud: https://www.soundcloud.com/ DISCO: https://www.disco.ac/ Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/ -- Quick links: 3:16 - About Dia Morgan 4:16 - How Dia got into singing and songwriting 4:46 - What opportunities did you have in school that solidified you wanted to be a singer-songwriter? Aaron English & Elizabeth Hareza are a songwriting duo from Utah. They tour around the world and don't skip places like Uganda while at it, picking up traditional songs along the way. Dusty Stray is an indiefolk artist who, after a year of living in his motherland USA, came back with a handful of protest songs. The EP 'USA' came out yesterday, precisely a year after the election of the Orange Man. Two hardened indie country stars are making their way into our studio today. Douglas Greer and Dick LeMasters both get some cues from hardcore troubadours like Steve Earle, but make the genre wholly their own through meticulous and deep songwriting. They give us some great insights on how to achieve those stellar lyrics. Talking of stellar: Petra Jordan interviews Judy Stakee again on songwriting. This time she asks what it takes for her to come over to the Netherlands and help us out over here with songwriting. It turns out we have to do a lot more than just dreaming about songwriting: we have to actually work hard at it. This time we had an amazing amount of 4 great live acts! Timothy Hull is a great singer-songwriter from the upper West Coast of the US. He's a regular guest of the show and always brings a lovely sound. Alex Hedley is from the UK, and brings a vibrant, indie rock sound to his songwriting. He can play rock on an acoustic guitar and make it sound really deep and heavy. The Partisan Seed hails from Portugal and is a quiet and dark poet who likes to work with soundscapes and instrumentals to tell his stories. Maggie Brown is an indie band from Amsterdam who dropped by as a duo, and know how to still sound like a band. Of course, we also have part 2 of the stellar interview Petra Jordan did with Judy Stakee. In this part, we find out what was the inspiration behind the retreats, what are the main takeaways for the participants and what happens after the retreat. Enjoy!
Zoetwater is a Dutch language duo, of 2 brothers. They write their songs together. I also broadcast the 1st part of an interview Petra Jordan conducted with Judy Stakee. New York City to Nashville, and all the highways, bi-ways, and dirt roads in between live and breathe in Jenna Torres’ songs of hope, heartache, and a life well worn. A country-rock siren, who has won acclaim as a recording artist and songwriter, Jenna finds no shortage of inspiration when it comes to matters of the heart. She has a way of distilling her experiences into heartfelt songs of love and loss whether drawing from personal experience or stories of those she meets along her way. Jenna Torres has enjoyed a successful career writing songs for Warner Music Group and Warner/Chappell Music. Legendary music executive Judy Stakee signed Jenna to Warner/Chappell Music. Noteworthy artists have cut songs from Jenna’s pen including singing sensation Martha Wash (from the Weather Girls) for whom Jenna wrote the anthem “Proud”. Jenna co-wrote the moving cry for spiritual connection “Busted Heart” with Ben Glover charting in the Top 10 on the Billboard Christian Hot 100, AC, and CHR charts for the group For King & Country. As Jenna says, “One of the greatest things about being a songwriter is that the more living and loving you do, the more songs you have to write and sing…this record is a celebration of my life in song. It is such a thrill to share my songs with you, it's a dream come true.” On Jenna Torres’s forthcoming album Wild Sugar, she continues to tell her heartfelt yet driving stories of loving and letting go. The video for the title track was shot in the beautiful town of Dahlonega, GA and co-stars Richard Turner of southern rock and country band Blackberry Smoke. Heart On Wheels is the follow-up release to Jenna Torres's critically acclaimed album A Woman's Touch which spawned the single ".22" and it’s accompanying video that remained in the Number One spot in the Artist Charts on Yallwire, a premier country music video network, for over six months.
