 In this episode of The Tree Planters Podcast, we return to the Red Earth Gallery at St. Paul's Centre to explore Phase 3 of the Art of Reconciliation project. Created during 2021–2023, this round unfolds against an intense period in Canadian public life: the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools, the establishment of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and the shared vulnerability of the COVID-19 pandemic. These events shaped how Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists entered the work, influencing both the themes they carried forward and the questions they were able to ask. Phase 3 stands apart in the project's story. The artists had already spent years building relationships across earlier rounds, and by this stage they were navigating a moment when public awareness, grief, and responsibility converged in ways that couldn't be ignored. Their works respond to this shift—reflecting on isolation and interdependence, the obligations of witnessing, the reopening of suppressed histories, and the personal work required to reconcile with truth. Many pieces engage directly with the broader social context: the trauma resurfacing as unmarked graves came to national attention, the disruptions of the pandemic, and the renewed conversations about land, water, and returning to teachings. Our discussion follows the artwork sequence and the stories behind it, considering how this round marks a turning point. Rather than focusing solely on learning or initial awareness, Phase 3 reflects a deeper stage of the process—one rooted in vulnerability, honesty, and the recognition that reconciliation requires personal transformation as well as structural change. Together, we look at how the artists interpret this moment, and how their work contributes to an ongoing effort to understand, repair, and build relationships in Simcoe County and beyond. Support the show

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the third study session on Kenneth Wooden's The Children of Jonestown. Wooden was a journalist at the time of the Guyana genocide and wrote extensively about the mass murder during 1978 and 1979. Like Meiers, Wooden is classified as a White Man. Having immersed ourselves into the life and times of the Rev. Jim Jones, we'll seek better answers about how "father" was able to acquire and kill nearly 300 children - most of them classified as black. Last week, Wooden detailed how Rev. Jones' personal library was half filled with works on the father of the 3rd Reich, Adolf Hitler. Jones apparently studied the science of brainwashing and owned material on de-programming former cult members. Like a typical Race-Soldier, Wooden suggests that Jones' chief inspiration and criminal teacher was Philadelphia's Father Divine. Meiers ignores Jones' efforts to steal Father Divine's congregation and his buzzard-like attempts to get Divine's White widow, Edna Rose Ritchings, to endorse the Peoples Temple. Wooden also ignores the influence of Jones' travels to Cuba and South America - where he was suspected of working for the CIA - before relocating his Indiana flock to California. We also learned more about the members of the Temple - including lots of illiterate, poor, highly vulnerable black people. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Con. Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly 50 years, this event has been mostly understood as a bunch of brainwashed blacks following a White charlatan to their demise. Meiers' work suggests something more nefarious. Last week, we heard further analysis of the litany of books published in the immediate days and weeks following the Guyana holocaust. None of these books were authored by black people. Meiers stresses that most of these books fail to mention the connections between Jonestown and the CIA - or the CIA activities in South America at large during this same period. He still recommends reading and scrutinizing these books for details that reveal truth. White female journalist Mae Brussell took the same view on this topic. Gus was surprised to hear Meiers' theory that Mark Lane and Jonestown were used to distract from the 1978 House Select Committee on Assassinations, which was investigating the murders of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mark Lane had written books and publicly suggested that a government conspiracy was involved in these assassinations. He was slated to speak at the congressional inquiry when Jonestown intruded. It's alleged that Lane knew that Jones planned to murder everyone, yet did nothing to alert authorities or prevent the massacre. He profited financially from representing the Peoples Temple and shacked up with "former" member Terri Buford for years. And he was lambasted in the press as an untrustworthy crackpot and likely Jones lackey who aided in the genocide. Much like 19th century California, there's gold and the coveted mineral bauxite Guyana soil. And there's a contested bitter border between Venezuela and Guyana. The presence of powerful White people like JIm Jones, helped secure the area. Meiers also highlighted how Jones used animals in his charade. White employed the "Twinkie Defense," alleging that after binging on junk food the evening of November 26th, a sugar stupor the following day caused him to mindlessly slaughter two White elected officials using hollow point bullets. He reloaded between the murders - and waved to future mayor Dianne Feinstein. White gays rioted in San Francisco to display their outrage over the lenient sentence White received - when he could have landed the death penalty. Meiers suggests that Jones was motivated to kill Mayor Moscone because he knew about the Peoples Temple's crimes and might snitch to investigators of the Guyana carnage. In fact, Hithe was previously convicted for his involvement in the murder of Alex Rackley, who was reportedly accused of being an "agent" sent to spy on the Panthers. Hithe was released early for "excellent behavior." Lewis was found not guilty for killing Hithe, only to be murdered himself years later.
