Independent music isn’t on the margins any more: It makes up 40 percent of the industry. This week on the podcast, Kevin Breuner joins host Dmitri Vietze to talk about how Independent self empowered artists are changing the game. Kevin knows independent music: He’s VP of Marketing at CD Baby, host of the DIY Musician Podcast (going strong at 241 episodes!), and an indie musician himself. The rise of the DIY Musician means that mainstream artists are having to work harder to maintention the same attention level. Pre-streaming, labels used to be genre specific—radio too—and other artists were viewed as competition. Now other artists are partners because there are a ton of opportunities to cross promote and work together to grow their collective fan bases. There are fewer gatekeepers now and the floodgates are open, and success is coming from surprising places so it’s the perfect time to experiment as an independent artist. CD Baby has long been a prime mover in a number of the tech-driven seismic shifts in the music biz we’ve been tracking: Broken Gates, Self-Driving Artists, Many Paths to Success, the list goes on. We’re grateful that they signed on early as a Supernova Sponsor of the Music Tectonics Conference where we’ll explore these shifts and more. Kevin will be there, along with CEO Tracy Maddux and SVP Christine Barnum. Connect with them in LA! The Music Tectonics podcast goes beneath the surface of the music industry to explore how technology is changing the way business gets done. Visit MusicTectonics.com to learn more, and find us on twitter and facebook. What do you think? Connect with Dmitri Vietze on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

What does funding look like for musical endeavors in 2019? In this live taping of the DIY Musician Podcast, Kevin and Chris will discuss that past, present, and future of funding for indie artists. Distribute, monetize, and promote your music at https://cdbaby.com.
In this live taping of the DIY Musician Podcast, CD Baby’s Kevin Breuner and Chris Robley compare notes on how they launched and managed their “Free + Shipping & Handling” campaigns to give away their newest CDs for free — while STILL making a profit, building their email lists, and converting casual listeners into fans. Concepts in this discussion can be applied to ANY sales or marketing funnel for your music, not just a traditional “Free + Shipping” offer.
In this episode, Dan and Kevin discuss digital music distribution, as well as tools and strategies for DIY artists to market themselves. Kevin Breuner is the Marketing Director of CD Baby, one of the largest music distribution companies in the world. He’s also in the band Smalltown Poets, which has received multiple Grammy and Dove Award nominations. Kevin also hosts the DIY Musician Podcast, teaching artists best practices to promote themselves and grow their careers as artists in the music industry. Mentioned in this episode... The foundations of music marketing stay pretty solid: capture attention, offer value, lead listeners on a journey from awareness to action. But the house you build on that foundation is always shifting. What older marketing strategies still work for musicians in 2019? What are the new tools to tell your story? How do the shifting expectations of your audience alter your approach? In this LIVE taping of the DIY Musician Podcast, CD Baby's Kevin Breuner and Chris Robley will discuss what effective music marketing looks like today — and tomorrow.

Singer songwriter Tom Meny considers himself an ambassador for house concerts. He says they're his bread and butter these days. He's so into them that he has a podcast episode devoted to the topic. Among his most recommended resources on the subject is this episode of the DIY Musician Podcast, featuring an interview with house concert expert Shannon Curtis. His other most recommended resource on the topic is this book by Shannon Curtis. Recommendations for breaking into the house concert scene Tom admits that it can be hard to get into the house concert scene, but offers a couple of important recommendations. One is to get involved in regional folk festivals and conferences and apply for their showcases. Another is to have a friend host a show. He's quick to add that you should get familiar with house concert guidelines, and elaborates on why during our conversation. Live acoustic performances by John Mayer were among Tom's earliest influences. Although he got his start posting videos on YouTube, Tom credits his entire existence in the Austin music scene to fellow singer songwriter Ray Prim. He hasn't always been into folk and Americana, but is now a regular attendee and regular performer at the Kerville Music Festival and Folk Alliance conferences. There's a connection between these events and the house concert scene, which explains why they've become a regular part of Tom's marketing routine. Other topics we discuss include merchandising, digital distribution, selling albums on USB (and maybe USB-C someday soon), and how Spotify could make it easier for fans to support their favorite artists. We also share social media etiquette tips for music fans. The old ways and myths are strong. And many musicians are still making important decisions for their careers based on outdated practices and false assumptions. In this episode, taped in front of a... So what's it take to be Indie anywho? www.cdbabypodcast.com
British singer songwriter Lynz Crichton has been busy working on a new EP, and the project has two noteworthy facets. One–Lynz gave herself a 90-day deadline for songwriting and recording the demos. Two–She collaborated with her fan base to get feedback on song ideas and input on which songs to feature on the new EP. The 90-day deadline for songwriting I was particularly interested in the 90-day deadline for songwriting and demoing. Deadlines aren't novel by any means, but our conversation reminded me that many songwriters I know appear to struggle with the actual business of creating (i.e. songwriting). What better way to get into the creative process than to challenge herself with a 90-day deadline. Lynz tells me that she plans to do a similar 90-day thing for the recording and mixing of the final tracks. All the things indie artists must do sometimes “takeover." Her 90-day deadline approach was born of necessity. Lynz is not only an indie music artist–she's also a mother of two. She says life and all the things indie artists must do sometimes “takeover." If you're an indie music artist, this is an approach worth considering. "Musicians should put fans first. As an indie artist, it's possible to give fans close access." Lynz started the fan collaboration process by simply asking for their help and involvement. This was all possible because she's built a healthy email list and Twitter following. Asking fans to vote on which songs to include on the EP was brilliant in my opinion. This whole affair of fan collaboration also inspired her to create two versions of the EP, one with guitar and vocals only, and a second with additional instrumentation. She best expresses the method to her madness in telling me, "Musicians should put fans first. As an indie artist, it's possible to give fans close access." In this particular case Lynz genuinely wanted to find out what her fans are into, and to involve them in the creative process. She adds that it was also a great way to "keep the conversation going." Lynz also does work writing personalized songs. Fans commission Lynz to write these personalized songs, and it's apparently become a regular thing for her. It's also something she actively offers fans. She describes personalized songs as a piece of history in time, and a way for fans to honor their close friends or loved ones. This is a great example of the many ways in which indie artists can make money. Continuing our discussion on the different ways indie artists can make money, I asked Lynz about her experience with performing alternative or less common venues. Among those less common venues are open markets, foodie events, craft fairs, and toddler festivals. I've also discussed lesser known venue opportunities with Bree Noble in episode 17, and continue to discuss this theme with other artists. Apparently there's no end to these new opportunities, where organizations and event planners are looking for music and music programs–and they have budgets! Our conversation in this podcast episode indirectly offered lessons to songwriting procrastinators and looking at income opportunities more creatively. I hope you'll take the inspiration to heart. Life is passing by, and we await your next compositions. The first band Kevin Breuner joined after college, Smalltown Poets, received a Grammy nomination for their first album. That band has been through a number of changes throughout the years, but they're still active 20 years later. Kevin has also stayed active in the music scene, playing in a couple of bands in addition to Smalltown Poets. One of those bands, Hello Morning, recently got included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Kevin joined CD Baby, digital distribution was in a nascent stage and CD Baby was an early adopter. That gave him a front-row seat to see how that innovation would go on to transform the music industry. Kevin is currently CD Baby's Director of Marketing, and he co-hosts their DIY Musician Podcast and helps to organize their annual DIY Musician Conference in Nashville. # As an accomplished musician and as someone who engages musicians on a daily basis through his work at CD Baby, Kevin is ideally positioned to give advice about how to stand out in today's music landscape. Some of the things we discuss in the episode include When it makes sense to sign with a label, if ever How to get your music on film and TV soundtracks Getting traction for your music with a live listening party How to get access to the same fan engagement tools that Oasis uses How artists like Ingrid Michaelson built a successful career while staying independent How filmmakers on a budget can work with CD Baby to get memorable music for their films What stats to pay attention to on Spotify # Sponsor for this Episode Fable House and I are partnering together to produce distinguished music videos for bands with big visions who want to share their music with the world in memorable, imaginative, and soulful ways. Based in Louisiana, Fable House is a production company that has produced millions of dollars worth of content. They have shot features for the SyFy channel, produced a number of polished music videos, and shot a short film that screened at the Cannes Film Festival. https://vimeo.com/147341881 # Ready to bring your music dreams to life? Kevin Breuner, CD Baby’s Director of Marketing, has spent over 14 years in the music business. And, as an artist himself, he knows what challenges musicians face well. His band, Smalltown Poets, grew from being a local indie act to securing a major label deal, with their debut album selling over 200,000 copies and bringing them a Grammy nomination. Still, the bandmates couldn't sustain their music careers and had to split. Kevin knew there had to be platforms to help artists make successful careers, and eventually discovered, and later started working at, CD Baby. Today, Kevin Breuner leads CD Baby's marketing efforts and hosts their DIY Musician Podcast. On this Music Growth Talks podcast episode, Kevin talks about the opportunities Spotify and the likes present, seeing "how different platforms cause success in different ways", and embracing the strategy of getting people to listen to something instead of buying something. Listen to the show for tips on using streaming analytics, a teaser for this year's DIY Musician Conference, and much more. ⏯ Go to http://dottedmusic.com/2017/podcast/mgt86-cd-baby/ for the show notes and http://musicgrowthtalks.com to subscribe to the podcast.

Hi Podcast Listeners! The BTB Podcast has moved into its new studio starting with this episode. We hope you enjoy the improved digs. In the first segment, Ryan and Dave talk about the new studio and then discuss the recent controversy involving Kesha's Billboard Music Awards performance. Kesha is currently involved in a lawsuit with her record producer Dr. Luke. Kesha has accused the producer of sexually assaulting her and is trying to get her recording agreement with him terminated. This week, Dr. Luke originally prohibited Kesha from performing at the BBMA's, but eventually changed his mind and approved her appearance. While many are cheering about Kesha being back on the air, Ryan is wondering why Dr. Luke should even have a contractual right to keep her from performing in the first place. In the second segment, musician/blogger/podcaster/marketing professional Chris Robley joins the show. He talks about his latest album ("The Great Make Believer") and his work at CD Baby, and he also gives tips for artists on how to create great music videos on a budget. You can find out more about his music at www.chrisrobley.com and you can read his articles at www.diymusician.cdbaby.com. You can also check him out on the DIY Musician Podcast. In the final segment, Ryan and Dave debut a new segment entitled "Ryan and Dave Are Mad About Stuff." They both rant about things that are making them upset this week. Good stuff!
