Kate Nowlan is on a Mission.  A mission to help women entrepreneurs thrive as entrepreneurs in their 2nd half of life.  And Kate has the business acumen to do it.  “Entreprenuring” her whole life Kate was the master of the side hustle.  Starting a family at age 20 she uses her entrepreneurial skills to help her family make ends meet.  Divorce and the fire of life forced her to take her skills to the big time.  Now she's started and exited the apparel company Graced By Grit.  Is an equity holder in another.  And the fractional COO of yet another.  She's co authored a best selling book.  And she's just getting started.  With her long time business partner Kimberly Caccavo they've started the Face Your Grace workshop curriculum which is focused on helping women embrace their entrepreneurial selves and take flight.  Phase two of Face Your Grace is their enterprise course which will focus on fundraising.  I.e. What happened today is one, I interviewed Kate Nolan, who is an incredible female entrepreneur. And she helps female entrepreneurs and I got to interview her for the Table Rush, master class, and I got to practice I got to start putting in action, some of my ideas, and it worked really well. And the net result was she cannot wait to get her hands on on our interview, so she can use it as a as a tool to help her to help her grow. So I'm going to talk about that. Time permitting, I'm also going to talk about a another person that I'm doing. Her name's Lisa, Lisa, who has all the pieces, all the pieces scattered about a business, and she's finally ready to put all those pieces together and get it online and and start to monetize. And so I'm going to talk about that. those two things over the next at least one episode, perhaps two or three, we will see how it goes all right. Kate Nolan first. So my idea is that I am helping entrepreneurs create sales videos that generate leads and convert to sales convert these leads to their dream customers through my winfomercial process to my funky cool new age information tool the infomercial and effectively it's what what is that? Well it's an interview style where where I'm systematically going through all the boxes that we need to check. I'm being a little ambiguous on purpose until learn how to talk about it. but to create a compelling interview that's packed with with awesome information also tells the person's story and then has a awesome can't win call to action.  and and so I have been well let's see what else can I say in that regard thank you for for hanging in there with me. It's actually been a good week or 10 days since I've recorded an episode which speaks to the power of batch recording episodes. Anybody who is has a podcast or a you know a blog or YouTube channel you can batch record episodes so when you get a solid idea if you time it right you can you can record multiple that one idea into multiple episodes that fit your time bracket that fits your listeners time bracket, your perfect customers listening time bracket or reading tighten bracket or what have you. And it's been very powerful for me. And it also relieves some some pressure on the content producer in this case me. Because I trust that if I am not recording content for a week, that when a solid idea comes to fruition or materializes, I can turn that into you know, some good quality episodes. Anyway, thank you for listening to the diversion.Mischa Zvegintzov  05:00So Kate is an amazing, amazing, super smart, talented...Mischa Zvegintzov  05:08Sorry, dads playing football with their kids in the park. I just as a recording, sort of not sort of crossed paths with a footballer and a little girl, your five year old is a very funny moment. Perhaps this funny moment, we'll get edited out.Mischa Zvegintzov  05:29So back to Kate. Yeah, So Kate, I can't wait till this episode is up for the interview with Kate. Because it is awesome. And you get to see your passion, we get to tell her story of how coming out of, you know, a crisis in her early 30s. She got to apply her her entrepreneurial skills, she was in essence forced to put them to work, she started a company called Graced By Grit.  Which was effectively comfortable workout clothes. And around, you know, just a great story, she was able to build that, take on a partner build it with a partner.  they were able to exit that, that that business. stay on a foundation that the business created a scholarship for young women to continue with athletics.  because she saw the power of athletics and had some stats on the power of athletics, and how important it is. Like there's a direct correlation between young women who embrace athletics, and you know, the organized athletics and how it helps them have entrepreneurial success later in life. So they started a foundation. So she's on this foundation, super cool.Mischa Zvegintzov  07:08And then she was able to take everything she learned from that business from creating that business, and help other female entrepreneurs do the same things with their products and ideas. And so now she has turned that into a course, course curriculum. And so it's super cool, there's a ton of passion behind it, there's a ton of, of just, it's great, she's got her niche dialed in. But she gets to tell that story. And as I'm walking right now and recording this, unfortunately, I don't have what that website is, or I'd tell it to you look in the show notes. It's in the show notes. But a great great interview and and she's just launching her this curriculum, this membership site. and I was able to create with her to just do this awesome interview that captured her story, the power of her tribe of how she can help and and just so gratifying and she's excited to have the content I'm excited to have been a part of the content creation and and yeah.  So I think I'm going to end that there and I'll talk about Lisa on the next episode. So we've got another success story, burgeoning success story. so yeah, if you're have ideas and you're trying to create some businesses get out there take risks go for it. I would encourage you it's been quite a journey for me but to have some things sort of come into you know, serendipitous events come together from for what are some baby step successes from your awesome alright, look for Lisa story next episode. Love to all

Influential women make powerful strides as they set forth on pursuits that value people and enrich lives. A perfect example of this is embodied by Kate Nowlan, entrepreneur and co-founder of San Diego-based GRACEDBYGRIT, a women's apparel line and mentorship program designed to help women support one another in their athletic journeys.  Listen in as Neal Bloom chats with Kate about her growth as an entrepreneur, as well as  challenges she has overcome as a woman in business.  2:50 Kate takes us through her initial upbringing in Rochester, New York to her eventual move to San Diego. After having resided on the East Coast for most of her life - including her undergraduate experience at University of Massachusetts, Amherst - she and her then husband shifted to San Diego to bring an entrepreneurial idea to life. Years down the road, circumstances changed and Kate had to figure out how to launch her own career as a single mom. She soon recognized a gap in a local swimming program and was offered a position at the non profit, thus kickstarting her entrepreneurial journey.  6:58 Kate never thought of herself as an entrepreneurially-minded person, but in retrospect, she realizes many of her accomplishments proved otherwise. Whenever she noticed something lacking in her community, Kate started a program to eliminate that shortage. Her consistent go-getter mindset eventually landed her positions training athletes as well as a full-time job event planning for The Boys and Girls Club. Her involvement with women athletes soon influenced her to brainstorm ideas for an athletic apparel brand for women on the run; this idea transformed into GRACEDBYGRIT.   12:05 With various connections in the industry under her belt, Kate and her co-founder got to work building the business. They soon pitched their idea to San Diego Sports Innovators, an incubator in San Diego, resulting in feedback that was mostly. Instead of losing hope in the business, Kate was determined to prove critics wrong, and years after that pitch, she and her co-founder received apologies from the critics, whose wives resonated with the GRACEDBYGRIT brand.  15:46 Kate shares the significance behind the name of the brand. “Women have these gritty moments in their lives that if they push through long enough, can become their grace.” Over time, the brand gained more momentum and recognition, with women resonating greatly with the brand’s message of solidarity and women empowerment. It helped women everywhere feel powerful when faced with hardships, including a breast cancer survivor that Kate met. 19:10 For years, Kate continued to build the company, hosting pop-up stores as well as events in women’s homes and pilates studios. After struggling to raise sufficient capital for growth, and having a co-founder who wanted a change of pace, Kate eventually sold the company in 2018 to local men's apparel company Hylete. She decided that the legacy of GRACEDBYGRIT was to create a foundation focused on creating female leaders of tomorrow, and she did just that. 26:00 With Kate’s success as an entrepreneur, she felt it integral to give back. She does so through her foundation and also supports other businesses that choose to give back to charitable causes. The GRACEDBYGRIT brand’s ethos remains grace, grit, and give. Kate sees the need for more women in conversations in business and fuels that change by speaking up and representing women in her brand. This mentorship program helps develop women leaders, enabling them to shine in a community of like-minded individuals.   Kate’s favorite local tacos:  City Tacos in North Park and street tacos in Tijuana    Connect with Kate: LinkedIn   Keep up with GRACEDBYGRIT: Website: https://www.gracedbygrit.com/ LinkedIn Instagram: @gracedbygritfoundation Facebook: @gracedbygrit   Thanks to our partners at Cox Business for their support in enabling us to grow the San Diego ecosystem.

My name is Susan McGlory Michel. I am the CEO and founder of Glen Eagle, a wealth management firm in New Jersey. Our guests today are Kate Nowlan and Kimberly Caccavo. Kate and Kimberly are the founders of GRACEDBYGRIT. GRACEDBYGRIT started as a women's athletic apparel store in California in 2013 to inspire and empower women in everyday life. In 2016, the company launched the GrittyGirls, an empowerment program for young women. And today, the GRACEDBYGRIT Foundation hosts GetGritty events and offers athletic scholarships for young women. Welcome, Kate and Kimberly. Wow, when I read your backgrounds, both of you are so talented and inspired. And Kimberly, I was super impressed by the fact that she has an undergraduate degree in engineering, that's a feat for women now today with STEM. You’ve designed widgets for space shuttles, you've worked in such a male-dominated industry. And Kate, you as a young, young woman had a baby and pursued a career, what an inspiration to your child. So we, we really were thrilled to have both of you because you come with great backgrounds, but also because you're good friends. So welcome. Kate and Kimberly: Thank you for having us. Susan Michel: Kimberly, can you begin and take us on the journey of what was the inspiration behind GRACEDBYGRIT? And what's the meaning behind that?   Kimberly Caccavo: So we started GRACEDBYGRIT as a company. Kate was an athletic trainer who was known to be tough and get things done. I was going to do a triathlon and I needed the best trainer in San Diego. So I hired Kate. And she was amazing, but a little too hard for me. So I was trying to slow her down by noticing what people were wearing or trying to show up in an unbelievably great outfit. But what we noticed when we worked out is that as great as some of these outfits were, once you got my 50-year-old body moving, it didn't look like it did when it was static. And we started talking about what was really required in women's athletic apparel to look good both when you're standing still and getting a coffee, but also when you're working hard. And we had all kinds of ideas for high performance, flattering workout gear. And we started floating the idea of starting our own company, kind of to slow her down a little bit. A few years later, we reconnected and said, you know, we really should do it. No one's done it yet no one started a company with safety in mind. But most important with women in mind, it was designing something that looks great on a 30-to-60-year-old...

Kate received her BA in Sociology and Psychology from UMass Amherst. As an entrepreneur, she owned her own company, Absolutely Organized, that organized small businesses and homes. She launched, coached, and grew a youth and masters swim program at a private health club in Plymouth, MA. Upon moving to Southern California in 2008, Kate was a youth and masters swim coach and an executive for The Boys and Girls Club in which she planned and ran events, coordinated fundraisers, ran the day to day office operations, and launched new revenue-driving community programs. In addition, she privately coached women and women's running groups. Kate and her business partner, Kimberly, were inspired to start GRACEDBYGRIT while training for a triathlon. They realized there was a lack of high-performance athletic apparel for 30-60-year-old women that made them feel safe, look great and protect them from the sun. They started GRACEDBYGRIT in 2013 and sold the company to HYLETE in 2018. Kate was hired as the VP of Brand Experience for HYLETE. She brings a female voice and narrative to the HYLETE brand focusing on expanding the women's product offering at HYLETE and elevating the emotive, relatability and relevance to the brand voice. Kate takes the first female seat at the executive table at HYLETE. Stay in touch with Kate through HYLETE at @trainhylete on their website, hylete.com, or on LinkedIN @KateNowlan.

028 | Kate Nowlan Explains Why Having a Backup Plan in Business is Important Kate Nowlan makes it happen as COO of GRACED BY GRIT. She manages her team leading by example and rarely sacrificing fun. She starts an impromptu ab workout in the office onemoment to get endorphins pumping for creativity and focus and leads a company meeting the next. With her positive attitude, she shows her employees why working for GRACED BY GRIT is her dream job each and every day. She is a natural people-person and loves working with women. Outside of the office, Kate is raising two teenage daughters while squeezing in yoga, pilates, a de-stressing walk or a run (almost) every day. When she isn’t folding laundry (hello, teenage girls) she finds time for her boyfriend, family and friends usually while sipping an extra dirty martini. Kate’s entrepreneurial journey started out a bit differently than some, she started by doing small things here and there to help make ends meet for her family. This eventually escalated to a full-blown business when Kate moved to California. After separating from her husband, Kate began a career that she’d been yearning for. After being fired after only 5 months at her job, she had to quickly bounce to her Plan B. Kate experienced some scary moments after she was fired. She was responsible for her two daughters and knew she had to quickly jump back in after reconnecting with old personal training clients. One of those old clients led to a business partnership. This partnership, is what grew into Kate’s current company GRACED BY GRIT. Kate shares with us, how even when she was feeding her kids PB&J sandwiches, she was able to make huge leaps in her business. Enjoy, thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!
