Today I'm talking with co-founder of August Uncommon Tea, Gina Zupsich. This conversation is more than a discussion around tea, we talk about travel, being open to the magic of life, how great things can happen after misfortune, staring a new business and allowing things to come to you. Whether you're a tea drinker or not, you'll be inspired by this conversation. Gina Zupsich leads culinary development and brand voice at August. She has always favored her senses of smell and taste. Her nomadic childhood allowed her to explore scent and flavor across the American landscape. Her first visit to France at age 16 was a culinary and cultural revelation which led her to earn an MA in French Cultural Studies from Columbia University and a PhD in French Literature from UC Berkeley. During her research in France, she alternated long hours at the library with adventures in fashion, perfume and food. In 2013 the lure of a more sensuous life led her to leave academia to co-found August Uncommon Tea, in which her fantasy of becoming a chef, perfumer, chemist, and novelist collide. She spends her free time writing poetry, comedy bits and gardening. While spiritual guidance can provide some direction, it often doesn't understand the practical demands of building a stable business. You need to listen to wise guidance that recognizes the importance of commitment, boundaries, and persistent practice in creating a life you love.**0:00 A successful solopreneur requires a stable schedule for consistency and growth. 00:38 While spiritual guidance is beneficial, it often lacks understanding of practical life demands like paying rent or taxes. 01:18 Higher guidance is good for virtues like forgiveness and compassion but may not fully comprehend the pressures of human life. 02:25 Subtle and higher levels of guidance are usually the quietest because they respect our free will. 03:18 Higher guidance may encourage actions like spending time in nature, but may not understand the need for a stable work schedule. 04:23 Assess the life you've created to gauge the effectiveness of the guidance you've been following. 05:17 Wisdom can also come through interactions with other humans, not just inner or higher guidance. 06:12 Excellence in your craft and business requires a stable schedule for continuous practice and improvement. 06:56 Generating flow is a skill that helps you overcome resistance and creates a life you love. 07:37 Maintaining boundaries in your personal life is essential for crafting a stable schedule and fulfilling work life. Skilled trades entrepreneur Tommy Mello joins the podcast to talk about creating a business where everyone wins: business owners, employees, vendors, AND customers. Tommy's main motivations in business are relationship-building and helping employees make a good living. Those motivations contribute to the development of company culture; even though cultures build themselves naturally, developing the right leaders will help build a positive company culture that values all employees equally. Tommy trains leaders to develop their strengths, shows them that they are valued, and gives them the resources they need to succeed. When companies grow, communication tools and project management technologies need to be standardized to help organize the company, including using checklists and SOPs. Departments also need to keep their focus on the company's main goal, not just the success of their division. The goal is to make sure that people are aware of their responsibilities early on and on board with the company's vision. To get the right people on board in the first place, we can improve our recruiting processes if we use social media to recruit talent—people who already have a job and are proven in their roles. Tommy also sees recruiting as a constant process that happens everywhere in the community and requires communication and follow-up. Tommy and Bryan also cover: Tommy's business: A1 Garage Doors Service Training leaders Allocating responsibilities and getting the right people on the bus Not punishing people for mistakes Unifying competition and collaboration Striking a balance of go-getting and humility Hiring for your weaknesses Tommy's new book, Elevate Building a legacy around serving others Seeing everyone as an individual instead of a representative Pricing and integrity   Check out Tommy's latest book, Elevate, at http://elevateandwin.com/. Raised in a trailer park with no clear path to success, kicked out of high school and faced with becoming a father in his teens, Jayson Waller is the definition of a “True Underdog.” The True Underdog podcast is inspired by Jayson's journey as listeners hear high-profile guests share motivational tips, inspiring stories and business-building lessons to help other potential underdogs pave the way. Jayson went from driving a limousine on weekends to support his young family and his young business to eventually becoming a partner in a second home security business, Power Home Technologies. He helped grow the company to $28 million in annual revenue. After seeing another home security entrepreneur, Vivint's Todd Pedersen, successfully transition into the solar industry, Jayson felt that it made sense for him to make the same move. In 2014, Power Home Technologies rebranded as POWERHOME SOLAR.  POWERHOME SOLAR has grown to over 1,600 employees and nearly $200 million in annual revenue. In 2020, the company was ranked the seventh residential solar installer in the U.S. by Solar Power World and 255th on Inc. 5000's list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. In 2019, Jayson was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Emerging Services category, proving that hard work can get you anywhere. In this episode, Brad and Jayson discuss the highs and lows of creating a business. Pat is a multi-faceted individual who wears many hats with equal finesse. As a proud father and husband, he is also a successful entrepreneur who owns multiple lucrative online businesses. Pat's expertise in digital marketing is well-known, and he is a sought-after professional blogger, keynote speaker, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author. Additionally, he hosts two highly-rated podcasts, the Smart and the Ask Pat podcast, which boast a staggering combined download count of over 80 million, several awards, and recognition in prestigious publications like The New York Times and Forbes.Apart from his entrepreneurial pursuits, Pat also advises ConvertKit Circle and other digital marketing companies. His philosophy revolves around creating a business that serves people, with offerings that cater to their needs. He frequently shares his expertise and experience in building lucrative businesses, using his own ventures at SPI as an example.Pat is a creator at heart, constantly seeking out new ways to build and innovate. His journey began in 2008 when he was laid off from his job in architecture and turned to the online space for a new venture. He found success in helping architects pass exams and later started Smart Passive Income, where he openly shared his strategies and experiences. Over time, Pat's definition of a creator evolved. He became known for his willingness to experiment and try new things, whether it was building an iPhone app company that made over a million dollars or launching a physical product called the Switch Pod on Kickstarter that raised half a million dollars in just 60 days.Pat's latest experiment is on YouTube, where he has built a prosperous channel around one of his hobbies, Pokemon. With almost 600,000 subscribers and 130 million views, Pat continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a creator and entrepreneur. Despite the many successes and occasional failures along the way, Pat approaches each new venture as a learning opportunity. Being a creator means constantly evolving and staying true to his passion for building and innovating. In 2009, Pat started his first YouTube channel, which was initially just a place to store videos about topics he discussed elsewhere. However, he didn't take it seriously and wasn't consistent. It wasn't until 2016 when Pat attended the Summit event that he realized the true potential of YouTube. He discovered that it wasn't just about getting more views and subscribers, but about capturing people's attention and serving them in a meaningful way. Pat was motivated to improve the way online business was taught on the platform. He wanted to use YouTube to teach online business the right way and contribute value to viewers instead of just trying to sell something. He aimed to reach those who were doing it wrong and educate them on the right approach. His efforts paid off as his channel grew from 50,000 to 200,000 subscribers in just one year once he focused on his audience and how he could serve them best.Pat used to struggle with saying yes to every opportunity that came his way, which divided his energy and made it difficult to focus on one or two things. However, after reading The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, he realized the power of working on one or two things at a time. Now, he focuses 80% of his time on the things he's already committed to and uses the remaining 20% for experimenting with new ideas. While he acknowledges the potential of other channels like Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, he prefers to stay focused on his current projects. He emphasizes the importance of creating meaningful experiences for customers in his book, Super Fans. By providing special moments and a sense of belonging, businesses can stand out from others in the same field. He also stresses the advantages of human connection, which can be achieved regardless of technological evolution. To stand out in a crowded niche,
