Fewer WA children are in foster care amid state effort to keep families together

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families, which oversees the state's foster care system, celebrated a milestone last week: The number of children in foster care has dipped below 5,000. That's down significantly from 9,171 kids in foster care in 2018 – a reduction of more than 50% in six years.  This is seen as progress among experts who have pushed for states nationwide to keep children with their parents whenever possible. Splitting up families can do lasting harm to kids and disproportionately affects people of color.  But critics of the approach say the policy shift has created a situation where the state may be leaving children in harmful situations too long, especially when parents struggle with addiction or mental health issues.  Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible. Action Alert: CBP/DHS has resumed family separation at the border. Lawyers for Good Government is organizing a public awareness campaign around it and urging people to call CBP/DHS and object to this change in policy. Here is what to do: Call the public comment lines for CBP (Customs & Border Partrol) at 877-CBP-5511 and DHS (Dep't of Homeland Security) at 202-282-8495 and share that you oppose the new "dangerous and impossible policy of forcing all members of a family to secure a separate appointment and to instead KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER." (Language in quotes from Lawyers for Good Government) You can also urge your Representatives to join Reps. Chuy Garcia (D-IL) and Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ)'s congressional letter by today at 2PM ET. That means calling your member of Congress and asking them to sign onto the letter. Don't know who your member of Congress is? Sarah Winograd's journey as a “professional volunteer” led to the realization that poverty was a driving factor in the child removals in the families she was working with. See how Sarah mobilized her community to address family poverty to help families stay together. Through the Together for Families program, Sarah lives out her vision of supporting families by helping them meet basic needs. Listen to the full interview to learn about Carlos' courageous unplanned interaction with now President Joe Biden during a campaign town hall in South Carolina. This exchange elevated the need to push for a Democratic presidential candidate platform that included a commitment to NOT ONE MORE deportation and a commitment from Democratic candidates to Keep Families Together. Once again this administration does not understand the possible consequences of their actions. Over and over again they have had to admit in so many words that the problem and its solution were far more complex than they had expected. Obamacare was a simple “repeal and replace,” illegal immigration could be solved by a simple “Build a wall.” These problems have not been solved by past administrations because they are complex. First Trump said that family separations were just because he was enforcing “Democrat’s laws” and that he had to separate them (the “laws” he’s referring to don’t exist). Then, his Secretary of Homeland Security says that the family separations aren’t occurring. Then his head of the Border Patrol says on NPR that they aren’t separating children from parents for “more than a few hours.” Then his Secretary of Homeland Security says that they won’t apologize for “enforcing the law” (which doesn’t exist). Then Trump says only Congress can stop the family separations. And now, magically, Trump has found the power to end the separations on his own. The entire Trump administration is either incredibly incompetent or incredibly deceitful…or both. Join us at 1pm EST as we discuss this ongoing crisis at the border.
