With confusion over what can move forward and what funding is on hold, the uncertainty is rippling across the government.Given some of the uncertainty it's created, could this move weaken America's ability to respond to national security threats? How does cutting foreign aid impact U.S. leadership abroad? Will China and Russia step in to fill the void? Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

We are at the point where Artificial Intelligence is splitting into several capabilities. These include Generative, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Predictive, and Deep Learning to name a few. Today, we sit down with Melisa Bardhi from Excella and look at one aspect of AI, Generative AI, and examine how it can be used responsibly for federal applications. In a short 25 minutes, she covers ·       Definitions ·       Beginnings ·       Security ·       Existing models ·       AI training Melisa begins by admitting that one must be cautious about data that is used to feed AI.  All humans have biases, whether intentional or not. One document she would like to share with the audience is Excella's Generative AI Use Policy.  Rather than starting with a major tech overhaul, it is suggested that an agency looks at a pilot with well-defined outcomes.  Generally, Generative AI should be deployed in a controlled environment. Security is foremost in the minds of all federal employees. The challenge is that many of the recommendations from laudable organizations like NIST can be hard to understand.  As a result, Excella has unpacked many security concepts in several blogs. A reference is Decoding Artificial Intelligence: A Simplified Guide to Key Terminology.   https://www.excella.com/insights/decoding-artificial-intelligence-a-simplified-guide-to-key-terminology When you read about ChatGPT producing summaries, this is an example of a model that is used in a wide-open environment.  Melisa suggests agencies test out pre-trained models through cloud platforms like Azure ML, AWS Sagemaker, and GCP AI Platform. Fortunately, we are bombarded with places to learn more about Generative AI.  During the interview, Melisa mentioned agencies should consider partnering with research institutions and groups like ACT-IAC. For example, you can start your Generative AI journey with an article titled “AI Understanding in the Federal Government.”  https://www.actiac.org/documents/ai-understanding-us-federal-government = = = Want to leverage you next podcast appearance? https://content.leadquizzes.com/lp/fk1JL_FgeQ Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com

Doug Wolfberg, Esq., of Page, Wolfberg & Wirth, steps in to discuss leadership lessons from the Beatles and his new book – "Beatles FAB but True." The episode concludes with veteran EMS podcasters Chris and Anne Monterra, who offer tips on the art of podcasting. TOP QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “‘No comment is a comment!' So you really want to avoid that as part of your media strategy and work to develop some transparent and honest information when those tough questions come.” — Alexia Jobson “Anything that you say to a reporter is considered on the record and can be used in a news story.” — Alexia Jobson “Top tips for going on camera: You want to make sure that they are knowledgeable about what they are going to be talking about, you want them to be a willing participant and able to re-frame and be positive about the content they are going to cover.” — Alexia Jobson “It's important for you to just spend a little time looking inside your organization, recognize those important stories that you want to share, and then make sure that you commit some time and resources to building those relationships with your audiences ... having that positive relationship in place will go a long way. And it's also important as a profession that we work together to kind of raise the profile of out of hospital healthcare and EMS.” — Alexia Jobson “Getting out the door, our shoot time is the No. 1 thing that can decrease our response times. It's not driving lights and sirens; it's not driving recklessly or speeding or not obeying the laws ... it's getting out that door quick from the time of dispatch to the time our truck's pulling out of the garage.” — Brian Maloney “When we first started looking at the use of lights and sirens during transport to the hospital, which is right there, that increases our chance of getting in a wreck threefold and so it's very dangerous. When we first started it, we were at 26% of the time using lights and sirens during transport; we're down to almost 2%, for transport to the hospital. For response to calls, we were about 46-48% of the time using lights and sirens; we're down to 7% of the time now.” — Brian Maloney “Antibiotics for sepsis, so a lot of people are fearful of giving antibiotics, and why? Because the hospital says we need to have a culture, a blood culture. Turns out that's not true. If the patient's hypotensive, they're fixing to die, as they say. And we in Palm Beach County can give the antibiotics within 12 minutes of the 911 call. And our own data shows that the hospital is giving antibiotics at 120 minutes. That's a 10-fold difference in that. So, antibiotics for sepsis are, I think, a major item.” — Dr. Peter Antevy “There's a story about how the Beatles had a drummer for a couple of years before Ringo. He wasn't quite the right fit for that band. He's a good drummer. But when they got Ringo in, they took off, right? So, in EMS, we tend to think if somebody has a pulse and a patch, let's hire them or let's bring them in. But we need the right people.” — Doug Wolfberg “Recognize your own limitations, I tell a story about how the Beatles sort of came on hard times when their manager died, but weren't quite wise enough to know what they didn't know. They thought ‘we can manage ourselves,' and so it's to also recognize your limitations and get the skills that you need, if you don't possess them yourself, with your team.” — Doug Wolfberg EPISODE CONTENTS 01:15 – Media management with Alexia Jobson (REMSA) 09:22 – Alexia Jobson interviews Katherine Robillard (LA Office of EMS) 11:37 – Brian Maloney (Plum EMS) talks culture of safety and lights and sirens reduction 20:15 – Dr. Peter Antevy on the five protocol changes you're too afraid to make 23:54 – Doug Wolfberg Esq. Providing meaningful access to public services for individuals with limited proficiency in English is both a longstanding civil-rights requirement for federal programs and an important policy consideration given growing linguistic diversity in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought language access to the forefront by demonstrating the necessity of providing critical government services and information to individuals who speak languages other than English. Hand in hand with this growing visibility, recent years have also seen the expansion of federal, state, and local government efforts to develop and improve language access policies and programs. The Biden administration has engaged in a number of efforts to foster greater language access across federal programs. This has involved government-wide initiatives that include language access as part of advancing equity for underserved populations, supporting newcomers' integration, and better addressing the needs of ethnic or immigrant communities with large numbers of speakers of languages other than English. Individual federal agencies also have expanded their efforts to improve language access in their services and ensure state and local programs receiving federal funding do so as well. This webinar from MPI's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy explores executive-branch efforts related to language access provision. White House and Department of Health and Human Services officials and a leading language access advocate provide an overview of the various strands of the administration's work and discuss former, current, and upcoming actions connected to language access. The webinar provides insights into the challenges and opportunities in this area and explore options to foster greater language access in federal programs. That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership

I am excited to finally have the final member of my doctoral research team on this episode of the podcast. Christine has a phenomenal background in education and walks us through some of the lessons we have learned during our journey in our research to discover why it is so important to strive towards building a learning organization. She continually connects to the essence of servant leadership by reminding us that it is all about the people and the relationships we make. Christine uses some great examples to teach the building blocks of a learning organization (supportive learning environment, concrete learning practices, & leadership that reinforces learning), illustrates the value of establishing a community of practice, and emphasizes the value of doing one thing with precision.  Don't get too focused on the forest that you forget to see the trees as you listen. There are some great insights provided throughout this episode from our research and experience that are applicable across many disciplines and organizations that can transform a reactive training organization into a proactive learning organization. You can build processes that recognize the value of the individuals. on your teams and build practices that reinforce the ability of everyone to learn from one another.  Christine Kresge is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Montrose Area School District where she is responsible for K-12 curriculum, Federal Programs, and grant writing. Prior to her nine years as a curriculum director, Christine was a middle school reading specialist, a fourth-grade teacher, and a seventh-grade teacher. She also spent time as a social worker working in a therapeutic capacity with children diagnosed with behavior disorders. Christine holds a bachelor's degree in Social Work, a Master of Art in Teaching degree, a Principal K-12 certificate, and a Reading Specialist certificate. She is currently a third-year student at the University of Miami where she is pursuing her doctorate in Applied Learning Sciences.
