Travel Gluten Free Podcast Season 09 Episode 06 Traveling and Eating Gluten Free with Kyle from Equal Eats Cards In today's Travel Gluten-free Podcast, we are joined by Kyle Dine, the founder, and creator of Equal Eats Cards. Kyle has created one of the most important tools for the gluten free traveler or anyone with food allergies who eat out, especially when you're traveling to another country. Growing Up with Multiple Food Allergies Kyle grew up with multiple food allergies since he was a baby. His allergies include peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and shellfish. In addition, his wife has Celiac disease, so their kitchen is color coded, and they each have their own appliances to prepare food at home. Creating Equal Eats Cards Seeing a need for a professionally translated allergen card that would be taken seriously by wait for staff and others in the food industry, Kyle went on to survey over 2000 people with food allergies along with 60 professionals in the healthcare industry to find out what they were looking for when it came to an allergy translation card. He repeatedly found that the card needed to be plastic, have allergen information, and need to list what to avoid and what precautions to take when making food for those of us with dietary restrictions. Equal Eats Cards Options With his mission to empower people living with dietary restrictions to enjoy food everywhere by providing an accurate, accessible, and seamless technology solution to help communicate their dietary restrictions effectively, accurately, and conveniently - wherever their life takes them. Kyle takes great effort to give each individual a customizable option for their card. For example, you can add Celiac, vegan, vegetarian, food allergies, and food intolerances so your wait staff knows all the foods you can't eat. There are dozens of food allergy and intolerance options and dietary choices you can order on Equal Eats. This comes in very handy when you're ordering food when you're in a country in which you don't understand the language. Listen in to the story of the fantastic Kyle Dine.
We kick off Food Allergy Awareness week with Kyle Dine, CEO, and Founder of Equal Eats. Kyle shares his personal transformation as an 80’s child with limited information surrounding food allergies and taking risks and being dismissive about his allergies through a severe food allergy reaction in which he wasn’t prepared. The anaphylactic reaction was his moment to realize he needed to reevaluate his life and determined that his life’s mission was to help others. His professional journey includes a decade of work in allergy education as a trusted speaker and musician. And as an avid traveler, Kyle realized the language barrier can be problematic especially with food allergies and found the importance of putting allergy information in writing and in their language and solved this issue by with Equal Eats which provides professional translation cards to help the allergy community convey allergens in foreign languages. Kyle and Shandee talk about the difficulty eating out with food allergies and how they are on a on a mission to help both the service industry and customers with their needs. Kyle also treats us to his song, “Food Allergies Rock.”
Kyle Dine is the founder of Equal Eats, Food Allergy & Celiac translation cards in over 50 different languages. I met Kyle at my first ever Allergy Free from Show in London a few years ago, it is great to finally get the opportunity to have him on the podcast to share his story. Kyle Dine is an internationally trusted food allergy advocate, educator and performer. Having severe allergies himself and having "married into" celiac disease, he is very familiar with the struggles of communicating his dietary needs to people who are responsible for making and/or ordering food for him at restaurants and events. After experiencing the worst food allergy reaction of his life in 2005, he decided to begin helping other food allergic individuals avoid anaphylactic reaction like his by spreading food allergy awareness and education through music. https://www.kyledine.com/ https://equaleats.com/ https://www.instagram.com/equal_eats/ https://www.facebook.com/EqualEatsCo https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyledine/
Kyle Dine is a food allergic individual who has turned his diagnosis into several positive impacts for the food allergy community. Growing up with multiple food allergies, Kyle experienced first-hand the challenges that food allergies play during adolescence. After experiencing a harrowing anaphylactic reaction in his early twenties, he changed his career path in order to create tools and resources to help people avoid allergic reactions and improve overall quality of life. He is trusted food allergy educator and musician who performs engaging allergy awareness assemblies in elementary schools across North America. Along with his “Kyle Dine & Friends” DVD, which was funded through the allergy community on Kickstarter, his music and live assembly contain empowering, supportive, and educational messages for children with or without food allergies. His educational efforts guided him to working with Food Allergy Canada on their programs, resources and advocacy. Since 2008, he has specialized in the development of materials for youth and led projects such as elementary and high school awareness programs, educational books, videos, and the Allergy Pals online mentorship program. An avid traveller, Kyle founded www.allergytranslation.com in 2006 to help people travel with allergies by providing cards with professional translations of allergens in foreign languages. He earned a master's degree in 2019 at Queen's University for innovation management and entrepreneurship, and is currently relaunching his allergy travel resources under the new name Equal Eats. With the summer here I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about travelling and the importance of being allergy safe and allergy smart. First I'll be talking about how NOT to travel and then I'll have a special message for the teenage boys with allergies. What You'll Learn: I have been lucky enough to do quite a lot of travelling over the last 10 years, both with family and as an adult. I’ve done the nice travelling on planes with luggage and staying hotels and I’ve also done the whole backpacking thing staying in hostels, eating cheap food and basically slumming it. But when it comes to allergies you have to take some precautions and make some preparations. I’m not going to bore you with a list of must do’s, instead I’m going to do something different. Let's talk about what NOT to do. I'll also be talking about what happens when you ignore your allergy and another way to think about it. Resources: Listen to Kyle Dine talk about the Male Perspective on Living With Allergies Psychologist Jordan B Peterson talks about Slaying the Dragon Within Us THANK YOU FOR LISTENING To get more EAS content sent directly to your device as they become available, you can subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! "Never Gonna Be Bored" is by Adam and the Couch Potatoes. H. H. Monro (known as Saki) wrote "The Storyteller." The poet Horace wrote the Ars Poetica, which says (depending on your translation) that "poetry has two aims -- to instruct and to give delight." You can read a little bit about the history of children's literature at Random History. American Children's Literature and the Construction of Childhood is by Gail Schmunck Murray. Louisa May Alcott wrote a lot of stuff for children, including: * Little Women, followed by Good Wives (sometimes published as part of Little Women) * Little Men, followed by Jo's Boys * Eight Cousins * Rose in Bloom * An Old-Fashioned Girl, parts one and two "Lumberin' Bunny" is by Tom Smith. "It's Windy, Your Majesty" is by KidsCastUK. The American Library Association has an official Library Bill of Rights. They emphasize that parents should be involved in and will be held responsible for their children's reading. They also say that librarians should withhold from the parents as much information about the child's reading choices as possible: "Parents are responsible not only for the choices their minor children make concerning the selection of materials and the use of library facilities and resources, but also for communicating with their children about those choices. Librarians should not breach a child’s confidentiality by giving out information readily available to the parent from the child directly. Libraries should take great care to limit the extenuating circumstances in which they will release such information. (ALA, "Questions and Answers on Privacy and Confidentiality." -- scroll down to the question, "Are privacy rights of minors the same as those of adults?") In case anyone is wondering if I know what I'm talking about regarding the ALA, I got my PhD in Library and Information Science. James R. Kincaid wrote Child-Loving: The Erotic Child and Victorian Culture, as well as Erotic Innocence: The Culture of Child Molesting. Anne Geddes takes photographs of babies dressed up or staged as if they were food or flowers, among other things. The purpose of the photographs is to make us think of the Geddes children as consumables, which we can buy a picture of and consume with our eyes over and over without having to deal with the complexities of babies in real life. It works a lot like porn. "I Wrote a Song About Allergies" is by Kyle Dine. Emma Cooper does the Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast. I'm involved with two writers groups affiliated with the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. "Now, That's Magic" is by KidsCastUK. All the music (and the KidsCastUK bits) were provided by Mevio.com.
