One of the most-performed composers of our time, Sir John Rutter, celebrates his 80th birthday on September 24. To mark the occasion Harmonia Mundi has released an album of his choral music sung by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, directed by Graham Ross – ‘John Rutter: A Clare College Celebration'. And next week Decca releases an all-orchestral collection, ‘Reflections', that includes a performance of Rutter's piano concerto, which gives the album its title. Rutter himself conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Steven Osborne the piano soloist. James Jolly went to visit Sir John at his home to talk about the new releases but also reflect on his long association with Clare College, and much else.

A bunch of townies playing video games with their joysticks. The metaphors do not run deep here. If you're looking for a local scene where accruing points makes you royalty, where the vibe is provocative and the women love disrobing freely, then you just found your way to the local arcade, friend. Jefferson Bailey (Scott McGinnis) and his grandfather own and operate the town video-tech. When grandfather gets ill (or something, do we really know?), Jeff has to take on the resident busybody, Joseph Rutter (Joe Don Baker), and his idiot nephews. They want to Footloose the arcade youths! Meanwhile, Rutter's daughter, Patsy (Corinne Bohrer), is in on the teen delinquency. Jeff will have to battle his on-screen girlfriend's father demon and take on King Vidiot (Jon Gries) to save the day! The arcade? The summer? What the hell is really going on here? Is Eugene (Leif Green) hooking up? Is McDorfus (Jim Greenleaf) going to have a heart attack? RTS loves after hour parties and secret sexy video games. La-Mar shatters records in Moon Patrol and dominates a few rounds of Gorf. Collin gets on a minibike and shows the crowd who the Pole Position champion really is. When you're not taking off your shirt or having backroom circle-bed sex, just remember, “Totally awesome video games!”

This episode was originally published on February 5th, 2024. My guest this week is Charity Rutter [39:50], a great friend and longtime guide in the Great Smoky Mountains. She and her husband Ian have just finished a great book (I read the manuscript and loved it) and although it won't be available until April, you can pre-order it here: https://randrflyfishing.com/store/fly-fishing-guide-to-great-smoky-mountains-national-park/ Charity shares her secrets for making more out of your time on small waters, and although she concentrates on her area, she has fished small streams throughout North America and her tips will help you no matter where you fish. In the Fly Box this week we have a nice assortment of questions and tips on fly fishing and fly tying, including: Why do you hate hook keepers so much? Is it true that you should not hook your fly onto your stripping guide? A listener recounts his first experience with selling flies he tied himself. A number of people chide me for not using a wading staff—yet. Will it hurt my fly line if I stretch it first before fishing? A listener gives some good advice on how to get out of a dangerous situation while wading, and how to prevent your waders from acting like a sea anchor. A tip from a listener on how he deals with litter during a day of fishing and one on how he carries rods on the back seat of his vehicle. A listener tells me how pleased he was with Orvis reel repair service. Should I wear socks when wearing the new Pro Approach Hikers in salt water? Can I Euro nymph in lakes and ponds? A tip from a listener on making more durable peacock herl bodies. Where should I put the heavy section of mono on a shock leader? A listener shares a tip on playing darts during the winter to keep those casting muscles in shape I used rubber soled wading shoes on slippery rocks and had poor traction. Should I stud them or just get a pair of felt-soled boots? In a remote lake with an inlet and outlet, will trout move into the outlet as well as the inlet? How can I keep my dropper and tippet from slipping off my barbless hook when fishing with a dry dropper? And what knot is best when attaching a dropper to a hook bend? I have a 9-foot 5-weight rod and want a rod for fishing for panfish and streamers for trout. What rod should I get next?
“We understood that when you start looking at food miles—how far your food has traveled and who's producing it—and when you realize that there are four companies that control 85% of the animal protein sold in the United States, that's really concerning to me from a national security standpoint, especially when those companies are not all American-owned” Today's episode is Part 2 of our conversation with retired Army Sergeant Major Kara Rutter. In Part 1, Kara shared her unexpected journey through military service—from insisting on becoming a cook, to cooking for Secretary Rumsfeld, to representing the U.S. military overseas in some of the most strategically important regions of the world. We left off as Kara and her husband Matt had just found their 20-acre farm in Aiken, South Carolina and were beginning to turn their post-military life into something new. In Part 2, we pick up with a powerful discussion on food systems, national security, and what it could take to localize protein sourcing for military bases. Kara shares her thoughts on decentralizing food supply chains, the vulnerabilities exposed during COVID, and why she sees food as a matter of strategic defense. We also dive into the creation of Project Victory Gardens, their nonprofit focused on helping veterans become farmers, the success of their “farmer boot camp,” and a deeper look at their new agritourism incubator program. If you're interested in how veterans are reshaping agriculture—not just for themselves but for their communities—this episode is for you. Enjoy!

“I've worked in a lot of countries around the world, in the defense attaché system, and then in later positions. There is a cost of doing business in certain parts of the world” Today's conversation is a special two-part series featuring retired Army Sergeant Major Kara Rutter. From her beginnings as an Army cook—despite everyone telling her not to take the job—to working in the Secretary of Defense's mess, and later serving as part of the Defense Attaché system in Ukraine, Kenya, and Namibia, Kara brings a unique and strategic perspective to both military service and food systems. In Part 1 of our conversation, Kara walks us through her journey from enlisting in the Army to traveling the world in high-level diplomatic roles. We talk about what it was like to cook for Secretary Rumsfeld, sit as a fly on the wall as strategic decisions played out in the early days of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and see firsthand how global policy is shaped. Kara also shares her transition out of the military and how she and her husband landed on a 20-acre property in Aiken, South Carolina—fencing pastures, collecting “practice animals,” and building a new chapter on their farm. This episode sets the stage for a larger conversation about national food security, agritourism, and veteran-led farming. In Part 2, we'll pick up with Kara's take on using cattle and local food systems to support military bases, and how that led to the founding of Project Victory Gardens and the creation of veteran-focused boot camps and agritourism incubators. For now, settle in for Part 1 with Kara Rutter—it's a story of service and the earliest seeds of something much bigger. Lets get into it.

It's time for The Truth!Today, Sam and Dougie are looking at Brighton & Hove Albion, who are having an impressive season - but also one that's been permeated with strange results and odd streaks of form that have been up and down. On the verge of the Champions League places, things look pretty good under Fabian Hurzeler, who was brought in from St Pauli at the start of the season, who guided them to their best ever start, before going on an 8-game unbeaten run, then losing 7-0 to Nottingham Forest, and bouncing back with a four game win streak that has them looking well-placed for a return to European football. We look at a big summer spending spree, the new additions and how they've fitted in, tactical changes throughout the course of the campaign and where the future lies for a club who have made a habit of hitting the nail on the head with almost everything they've done in recent years. Is their Champions League chase an outlier in what has been a weird Premier League season, or should we be expecting the Seagulls' trajectory to keep going firmly in an upward direction? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Today we're joined by a player who's been making waves at the AMEX with his flair, confidence and electric performances, Brighton's very own Georginio Rutter. Since arriving at the club, Rutter has been a breath of fresh air. His technical ability, creativity, and fearless attacking play have made him a fan favourite. He plays with a confidence and swagger that sets him apart. But it's not just about what he does on the pitch, it's his infectious personality and love for the game that shines through every time he steps out in a Brighton shirt. Georginio talks us through some of this season's epic performances, his goals for the rest of the year and plans for life after football. Learn more about your ad choices.
