On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome food allergy mom and advocate for people with food allergies – especially when it comes to kids – Natalie Rice who is well known on social media as the Food Allergy Detection Dog Handler for Detective Harley! Natalie can often be seen alongside Harley as she sniffs out the mysteries of food allergies, and they educate, empower, and encourage empathy for people with food allergies. Today we are going to chat with Natalie about her personal connection to food allergies, what led to her becoming the handler of a food allergy detection dog, her work with Red Sneakers for Oakley, and her free educational app for kids – Detective Harley's Food Allergy Game. About Natalie and Harley, from their website (https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.com): Harley is a Golden Retriever allergen alert service dog trained to detect peanuts. The decision to get Harley was solidified after a bullying incident that took our vigilant-but-not-alarmist outlook over my daughter's peanut allergy to a new level that put the life-threatening reality of anaphylaxis at the forefront of everything. Trained by Kathy Watters of Nosey Dog Detection Partners, Harley has an important job in our every day life by providing another layer of protection, making life outside of the house safer. When the pandemic hit, like everyone else, we were stuck in the house, but Harley still needed to work (to keep her skills up) and wanted to work (because she enjoys it - it's a game to her). We started posting videos of her working on Instagram to raise awareness about the dangers of food allergies and cross-contact. We saw so many positive responses, but also negative ones. It was the negative responses that made us realize the enormous lack of understanding of food allergies and that they need to be taken seriously. They are a life-threatening medical condition. This is why I created Detective Harley, F.A.D.D. (Food Allergy Detection Dog).As the International Spokesdog for the Food Allergy Community, we are working hard to change the narrative on food allergies in kids 3-8 years old by educating all kids, empowering the food allergy kids, and encouraging empathy in the community around food allergy kids. The more people learn about and understand food allergies from a young age, the more accepting they will be as they grow up. So while the world will never be free of food allergens, education and understanding is the key to making the world a safer place for people with food allergies.Harley's Website: https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.comDownload Harley's App:https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.com/get-the-appHarley on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/detectiveharleyfaddHarley on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DetHarleyFADDHarley on Instagram:https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.com/detectiveharleyfaddThe Everything Nut Allergy Cookbook: https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Lisa-Horne/190009636Food Allergy Talk: https://foodallergypi.com/the-food-allergy-talk-podcast/Blog: https://foodallergypi.comTwitter: @foodallergypi & @fatalkpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/foodallergypi/ and https://www.instagram.com/foodallergytalk/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@foodallergypiEmail: foodallergypi@gmail.com

Being just a couple years apart, these two have been best buddies since they were little and have shared a childhood together. On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome back our special guest, my oldest son, Stetson Horne. This time to talk all things Disneyland Resort and California Adventure. Stetson has been to Disneyland Resort, California Adventure, Walt Disney World, Epcot, and a Disney Cruise. He successfully visited all the parks and went on a cruise with peanut and shellfish allergy. However, between our last visit to Disneyland Thanksgiving of 2021, and our return trip end of January 2022 – Stetson was diagnosed with 7 new allergens: pecan, walnut, oat, garlic, sweet potato, watermelon and pear. We left on our most recent Disney trip not knowing if he would be able to eat at the parks at all, but were pleasantly surprised to find he could still enjoy many of his favorites, and even found some new favorites! Food Allergy Info Card referenced in this episode was made on www.vistaprint.com using the following verbiage (feel free to copy and use this verbiage), and then listed respective allergens:I have anaphylactic life-threatening food allergies to the following foods and should I come in contact with them would require emergency medical attention. On this episode of The Food Allergy Talk Podcast, Lisa Horne interviews her son, Stetson, a 14-year-old teen with food allergies. Stetson was anaphylactic to peanuts and shellfish since he was just a baby. In the past 6-8 months of this podcast interview Stetson began having symptoms that appeared at first glance to perhaps mimic potential Celiac, Crohn's and Colitis, IBS or other potential digestive issues. We had no idea that what was lurking behind these symptoms were added anaphylactic food allergies that appeared over a decade since his original diagnosis. What was even more confusing is that they were similar to food allergies by way of symptom, but also appeared to be other issues. Listen into our experience detailed in hindsight to see what we learned as we navigated this new terrain, as well as the feelings and emotions that can go along with a new food allergy diagnosis. While Stetson has had anaphylactic food allergies since he was a toddler, Stetson is much more than his food allergy. He is a video gamer, plays both piano and guitar, plays golf, and has recently taken up archery. There may be some things that Stetson cannot eat, but he hasn't let his food allergies top him from living and enjoying life. Even with this latest curve ball adding an additional 7 allergens: pecan, walnut, oat, garlic, sweet potato, watermelon and pear.Listen to hear about his experience and finding the the silver lining living a life with food allergy, and making the most out of it.
